Editorial Reviews So when an album called "Mother Goose Rocks" came across my desk, forgive me for overreacting to the situation and figuring it was just one of those power punk acoustic-electro groups in their ambient-techno phase. Instead, "Mother Goose Rocks" turned out to be exactly what it sounded like: Mother Goose rhymes that, duh, rock. The CD, for sale in all Bay Area Tower Record stores, was created and produced by Los Gatos resident Richard Snee. A mock rock compilation, the album features "Rub-a-Dub-Dub" by the Nice Girls (a spoof of the Spice Girls' "Wannabe"), "Humpty Dumpty" by Chewygummee (a takeoff on Chumbawamba's "Tubthumper") and a blazing ska version of "Mary Had a Little Lamb" by the Highly Highly Lost Tones (Go ahead. You figure it out. I don't need to spell out everything for you). Snee says the album is aimed at kids aged 2 to 11 -- his own daughter, Hannah is 2 -- but that there is a Warner Bros. cartoon aspect to it. I experienced it firsthand by having fun playing "Name That Tune" and seeing how fast I could identify the songs sampled. "When I had a child of my own, I thought, gosh, these lullaby and folk music CDs are OK . . . but there were things that were going on in Top 40-style radio that kids would hear in the car and I wanted them to relate to it and have fun," says Snee, 38. "Second, I wanted adults, whether it be uncles, aunts, moms, dads, older siblings -- I wanted them to really get a kick out of it. I wanted something everybody, at their own level, could enjoy and have fun." Recorded independently in the Bay Area with Snee's own money, the CD features almost all local artists. In addition to Robert Berry, Michelle Chappel, Thom Duell, Mary Ellen Duell and Molly Pasutti, there is also an appearance by Snee in the Chewygummee song. Snee -- who also publishes Film & Video magazine -- is being courted by several labels interested in either buying the concept outright or helping in distribution, and Nickelodeon has expressed interest in a TV angle. He already has started work on the second album, which he says will be R&B. Daughter Hannah is being used as his own personal focus group. Hannah was put to work on the last album as well, at which time she vetoed "Wee Willie Winkie," a British-pop genre type tune that didn't parody a particular song. "She would just say, `OFF DADDY,' " Snee says. "OFF." For the record, Hannah's favorite song on "Mother Goose Rocks" is the Wallflowers-inspired "Baa Baa Black Sheep," by the Tallflowers. --Candace Murphy, Mercury News Music Writer --Madeline Molis, Family Media and Entertainment (Family Media and...

MOTHER GOOSE IN HUMPDAY?: You wouldn't believe the amount of music that music critics wade through. Indian western jazz fusion. Futuristic acid funk.

I played the CD for children who were ages 3, 6, 9, 10, 11, 13 and 14. The younger ones loved it and wanted to buy a copy immediately. The teenagers said they would want a tape to play in their carpools and thought it was "cool" for the novelty factor. The only complaint was that the CD with 12 songs in 30 minutes ended too soon. My group of reviewers wanted to know when MOTHER GOOSE ROCKS VOL 2 will be available! ""
Album Description
Mother Goose Rocks! is a collection of song parodies that combine classic nursery rhymes with contemporary music sounds and styles. Children ages 2 to 8 love having their very own 'hip' CD that adults love to listen to, also. Even better, older siblings quite often "borrow" this CD for their own listening fun. (This is why the Mother Goose Rocks! tagline is: "The CD Big Kids Beg to Borrow.") In addition to good old family fun, the Mother Goose Rocks! CD exposes young children to a diverse and timely set of music genres like, alternative rock, country, dance, pop,and r&b--with the safety of familiar G-rated nursery rhyme lyrics. For the adult audience, Mother Goose Rocks! represents an alternative to stereotypical sing-songy kiddie music, and a satirical look at today's contemporary music.
