Here's a Halloween treat of historic proportions. Where else can you get Nelson Olmstead's manic voice tripping through Poe's "Pit and the Pendulum"? Or, better still, Boris Karloff reciting "The Vampire Sleeps" with just enough chill in his voice to tingle the spine? Relying on four Poe tales--all but "Shadow" read by Olmstead--Scary Stories is great for fright night, and ideal for bellowing out a window for the neighbors. It's also grand to play in a collage atmosphere, as background, say, for New Wave Halloween or a crazed sound-effects display like Halloween Horror: Scary Sounds from the Hex Files. Of course, it's also a good item for teachers of literature looking to drive home the eeriness of Poe to a seventh- or eighth-grade class. Sound effects occur with wide spaces between them, economical enough not to impede the enjoyment of these dark, gloomy texts. --Andrew Bartlett

Scary stuff, huh, kids?.......2004-11-01
This CD features seven "scary" stories. They are all pretty good, although they didn't really scare me. Nelson Olmstead gives good readings of three Edgar Allan Poe short stories. The Poe story read by James Mason is not quite as effective. Boris Karloff is, of course, great. And Jackie Torrence gives an effective reading of "The Golden Arm". The weirdest story here is "Berenice" by Brother Theodore. If you ever saw Theodore's live act, you know he is a strange guy. The story here is typical of his live performances, and I'm guessing he wrote it himself, although the CD has no writing credits. This is a good CD to get if you are looking for a collection of spoken word horror stories.
An excellent variety of frightening narratives!.......1999-11-04
Not your usual horror recording, which ordinarily consists of some Poe stories or mildly frightening children's tales. The most appealing feature of these selections are the narrators, which include Boris Karloff and Theodore, who sounds convincingly psychotic. Jackie Torrance, known mainly for children's recordings, is also vividly gifted. I would not recommend this collection for children under the age of 12. There are some disturbing aspects to the tales, including death and madness.

a nutty, bizarre halloween listen for the adventurous .......2005-01-01
The golden age of the Halloween dimestore record is gone, I'm afraid. Classics like Peter Pan's "Ghostly Sounds", or Boris Karloff's "Tales of the Frightened" have been replaced with yeeccchh..."Drew's Famous" compilations of rehashed disco awfulness. But, if you're willing to dig around, there are some rare gems among the dross. This CD is one of them. The Old Gray Goose is a man (wearing a pointed witches' hat on the cover), with a ludicrously thick Boston accent who relays folklore and stories with a flat, halting delivery that is something like "Car Talk" meets Criswell on Valium. Some of the stories, particularly "The Shipwreck" are insanely gory and crazy. Others are innocuous. It's a little long to listen to straight through, but is one of the few post-1970s favorites of my halloween audio collection.

Disappointing.......2006-07-27
I am a fan of "old school" horror television, movies, and radio; when I saw the cover of this CD, I had to have it! Unfortunately, the material falls flat. It's aimed squarely at small children, not adults like me looking for a bit of entertaining, Halloween themed nostalgia. Not recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Intense Stories without an overwhelming orchestra background.......1999-10-04
A collection of intense scary stories that are accompanied with an orchestral background. Great for the scary story reader (not for children under 14). I personlly give this CD a five star rating. Very well put together.
A TOP NOTCH HORROR EXTRAVEGANZA.......1999-09-09
Have you ever read a book that was so engrossing that you couldn't put it down? You had to read it from cover to cover. The stores in this Cd have the same effect.
My favorite story is the first one in which the man learns he is buried alive and after struggling for what seems hours he escapes his coffin prison only to meet a twist of fate he did not count on. The special music recorded in Russia by a full symphony orchestra drives the horror of this mans delima home. The narration by Jim McDonnell is especially effective.
I highly reccommend "Little Evil Things" Vol. 3. Listen to it when your ready for bed and I guarantee you won't sleep well but you won't care either. It's a fun trip.
