Secret Door
Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Kitty Gill loves children and has always wanted to bring children closer to their hearts. She believes this is possible through music, which is why she has created Pixie Sage, a magical character that enters into childrens dreams and helps them solve their problems. Secret Door, a collection of songs sung by Kitty, Pixie Sage, and her daughter, Adina, are for children ages 9 months-8 years. Kitty has been writing songs professionally for 20 years. Her songs have appeared on The Olsen Twins CD, Brother for Sale which hit the Billboards Heatseekers Album Chart in 1992, and again on their second CD, I Am the Cute One. Her compositions are also featured on Early Ears, a CD compilation for children ages 0-6 from BMGKidz. And Kitty has written songs for Mondo Book Publishing, a childrens educational publishing company. From a young age, Kitty has received awards for her songwriting.
In 1987, her song, Hes So Right, received The Abe Oleman Scholarship Award for excellence in songwriting from the Songwriters Hall of Fame, as well as publication in Sheet Music Magazine. She also received Certificates of Merit from the American Song Festival in 1982 and 1983.
In addition to being a songwriter, Kitty is a couples and family counselor, and was a teacher at the Fleming School in New York, where she taught French and music. From there, she branched out into storytelling, and then started writing childrens songs. What is Secret Door? Secret Door is a collection of songs for children ages 9 months to 8 years, written and performed by Kitty Gill. Some other performers include her daughter, Adina, and Pixie Sage, a character created by Kitty who embodies "the mind, heart, and soul of a child."
The CD is a magical musical arrangement for children and adults alike, featuring songs that address experiences that children often dont have words for, such as anger, fear, sleeplessness and love. In between the songs, there are short skits and conversations between Kitty and Pixie Sage. Jane Margolies of Offspring Magazine called it, "a rousing collection of songs by Kitty Gill that kids will want to listen to over and over (and their parents won't mind)."
Secret Door is now being played on WPKN.FM 89.5 in Bridgeport Conn. on the first, third and fifth Saturday of each month, from 6 to 8:45AM. She is appearing live on Dave Zinovenkos show "The Carousel." on April 29th , and May 6th, with future air dates to come. In the works is a book about the adventures of Pixie Sage, as well as a Pixie Sage doll.

Nostalgia Trip.......2005-09-24
Helps you remember these great and atmospheric movies. Only Nino Rota writes better movie music.
Sweet and Sublime.......1999-06-13
"La valse de Francois T" makes my heart want to burst. Never has sweet melancholia been so sweetly and lyrically expressed. This entire album is a godsend, but "La valse" - it is something else, far beyond my power to convey.
The aural equivalent of Truffaut's films: humane, touching........1998-10-03
Hitchcock had Bernard Herrmann, and Spielberg has John Williams, and Francois Truffaut had Georges Delerue. "Jules and Jim" jauntily evokes the delicious problems of one woman in love with two men. With "Shoot the Piano Player" you can almost see Charles Aznavour in his seedy Paris cafe. And most gloriously, for Truffaut's Oscar winner as Best Foreign Film, "Day for Night," Delerue composes a chorale that celebrates the endlessly repetitious, endlessly varied rituals of filmmaking. A wonderful collection of themes from nine films (plus "La valse de Francois T."), performed by the London Sinfonietta under the direction of Hugh Wolff.

My favorite of the "Istanbul Oriental Ensemble" discs.......2005-10-19
I own three recordings by this version of the band and the "Sultan's Secret Door" is by far the most mature of the three. The songs have a seamless flowing quality that's missing in so much Middle Eastern music. As a couple reviews note below, the group very successfully introduces elements of Jazz and other Western techniques without compromising the musical whole. I've heard many would be officianadoes of Turkish gypsy music bad mouth Ocal on account of the fact that he holds dual Swiss/Turkish citizenship - or over the fact that he's "ripping off" gypsy music. This arguement against innovation is ill informed and severly misdirected. It's like saying that the Beatles were not a very good band and that they didn't really do much for rock'n'roll. But politically correct scholarship is trendy the world over and probably won't die out anytime soon.
If anything, more eastern ensembles should listen to this record and learn from it!
Captures Arabian/Ottoman beauty, dreamily........2003-10-23
Arabian flavour signifies Turkish music and culture. But, European influence gives it a difference from other middle-eastern cultures and musics. It isn't as rigid in its rhythm as Bellydance music, and nor is it as contemplative as Sufi music.
Long stretches of improvisation and mood (always Turkish scales, not jazz), where instruments (percussion, clarinet, oud, violin etc...) enjoyably drift in and out of each other, inevitably find their way into distinctive rhythmic melodylines. You can hear each instrument's texture so clearly, thanks to great production and highest quality instruments -which are played amazingly well. This music is hypnotic because it just 'flows'.There's no sense of effort, despite it being virtuosic. It perfectly fits the Arabian fantasy-world imagery from films and stories, aswell as being authentic folk music.
For a Turkish cd that is back to back melodylines, "Gypsy Rum" and "Caravanserai" would be better choices. But for a cd that shares the catchy parts between long sequences of Turkish mood, this one is perfect.
I'm glad Burhan Ocal didn't keep this secret as well as the Sultan had intended to.
One of Burhan's best!.......2002-04-20
I became so enamored of the music of Burhan Ocal and other Turkish musicians that I felt compelled to take a trip to Istanbul this spring. Of all of the albums that led to this musical odyssey, this was the one most responsible. "The Sultan's Secret Door" is compulsively listenable and absorbing, each track an imaginary set piece taking place at the Sultan's court. The infectious rhythms and rich melodic tapestry capture the spirit of a time (the reign of Suleyman I) and place (Topkapi Sarayi) perfectly. You're on a magic carpet, and Burhan Ocal is the geni that makes it fly. An experience not to be missed.
amazing.......2001-05-11
I love Burhan Ocal..Again a very nice cd by him....No more words...Try to listen it......
Totally enjoyable!.......2000-06-15
This CD is the next best thing to seeing Burhan Ocal and his band perform live. The songs are great, and the excellent sound quality really brings them to life. Percussionist Burhan Ocal is a master finger drummer, and the other members of the band play excellently on mostly traditional instruments such as the oud and the quunun. The violin on track 2 add a very nice touch. There's good balance between the more festive numbers (tracks 1, 2) and the mellow ones (track 3). Highly recommended.

The best!.......2006-08-11
There are lots of recordings of Otello out there, and most of them have something to commend them. This one is not the best all round. Valdengo is perfectly ok, but not the best on record. Neither is Herva Nelli in the top five category. Toscanini is, of course toscanini, but even he is not the reason to have this set. Bye the way: I am not recommending this as the one to get if you are in the one opera- one recording category. No, the reason to have this is that once you have come to love the role of Otello, there is simply no better rendition on disc! Vinay was the greatest (arguably) Otello of his time, and he is simply smashing as the wounded lion of venice. A trumpet of a voice but rich and baritonal: All one might want for the greatest role in one of the finest operas of all time. His "Niun mi tema" is fantastic.! All I can say is: If you love this opera as I do (this is one of the eleven recordings I have of it) you will surely appreciate the best recorded Otello of all time. Frankly, in my opinion, only Giacomini comes close. But that is only my opinion. Buy it!!

Roman Twilights.......2006-08-11
I read all the reviews on amazon for this cd and went ahead and bought it about a year ago. I have to agree with most of the comments. This is not for someone new to Eno as it is made up of out takes from some of his best albums. However, if you are an Eno fan it is definitely worth buying. It has actually become one of my favorites. True, many of the tracks sound like different versions of previously released tracks. For instance, Reactor, Chermin de Fer and Dark Waters sound like songs that were on Another Green World. Always Returning sounds like something from Apollo. And From the Coast is Quartz from Music For Films, Fuseli is Patrolling Wire Borders. Some of the others were new to me but sound like they could have been quite at home on earlier albums. The Dove and Roman Twilight sound like tracks from The Pearl. Empty Landscape, Drift Study and Dawn, Marshland sound like aural landscapes from On Land. My only complaint is that the pieces are too short. Many could be extended to twice their length and still hold my interest. And it would be nice if the retitled repeats (Fuseli and From the Coast) could be replaced with new pieces. Still, if you enjoy On Land, The Pearl, Apollo, Another Green World and the original Music For Films you will probably like this one as well.
One Man: Two Musics.......2005-07-03
I don't know if my CD vesrsion of Music for Films is AstralWorks; all I know is that the CD version rearranged the sequence of songs which is a sacrilidge - this is one of the reasons I still keep a high qualty turn-table in operating shape for listening to original vinyl releases.
At my age, I consider myself a fully competent commentator on Brian Eno's Music. Having first "discovered" my liking when I first heard "No One Receiving" and its David Bowid/Carlos Alomar style bomp, I was hooked. (I was in a Bowie phase in 1974-77).
Then my pure interest in Eno's music was the concretely sealed upon hearing "Another Green World" - That LP changed the way I listened to music. All of this on vinyl, at the time in which it was released.
My current opinion of Brian and his music is that he isn't interested in his own back-catalog very much or his re-issues. I am not even sure he owns the rights to much of his pre-OPAL material. Sure he gets royalties. But maybe not say-so in editing, I don't know. I'd be guessing
but, if you have been folowing the Oddities Volumes, you will also know he has a vault of things he (or his record company at the time) never released.
Eno has never been about the past. I consider him one of the greatest Futurists of the modern day.
EnoShop does a great job as distributing his current works which are almost all totally "Installation" music for rooms and enviroments he creates in museums etc.
Installations are Eno's primary "solo" medium. Actually, I think he's rather be raising his daughters or lecturing on a variety of theories and subjects, than making music. Not that he dismisses the fans of his music, but he has always just seemed to shun the lime light.
Eno could have been a great rock-star and he always went out-of-his-way to dodge this categorization.
Back to his current music - (I was fortunate enough to experience the Neroli exhibit in Madrid, over a decade ago.)...
From Neroli forward, Eno has pressed towards "experiential pieces" (in a way, like Stockhausen; These pieces, I feel do not translate well to the home stereo "Active listening mode". These works stil make for very good ambient music (in his defintion of the word) not the current translation of the ambient genre, which I would call "easy-listing techno".
On many great occasions, he has made collaborative musice that is much more extroverted and relative to the Eno we like to associate with the his first 7 solo albums ("The passage of my life is measured out in shirts"). But the lone Eno is a different animal.
His work with John Cale, Jah Wobble, Peter Schwalm and most recently and superbly again with Robert Fripp, brings out the very best of Eno's external musical self. He collaborates extremely well. He composes for himself, I believe.
I also see him faithfully applied as the "5th Beatle" in the music of James, The Talking Heads and of course U2. The song "We're all going to miss you" - on the James album with the pig on the cover - (at over 40 my places and names get foggier)is an excellent example.
This song could be dropped into "Here comes the warm jets" and fit right in; Farfisa Organ and Eno singing one complete refrain and all the backing vocals in his old reminscent style.
His new album, Another day on Earth" is very good. Eno has said it many times himself, he doesn't like to sing and doesn't think he sings well or likes the sound of his own voice.
To me, his singing is is like pure peace ( the second side of "Before and after Science" is just a vocal masterpiece.
Eno's voice is an under-used intstrument. But my opinion about his new vocal Album is that it feels forced; like so many fans wanted him to sing that he felt he had to put and album of songs together, even though this is not his current interest and subsequently resulted in not his best vocal album.
Maybe,I'll write a book, or a blog, because so many younger Eno fans may not have the same time-frame of perspectibeve that older Eno fans might have; I'm nealy his age and have everyting he's ever released and some he didn't release. (Those boot-leg vinyl's from the 70's were pretty rough.
Any way, this is not a criticism, I just think you have to separate the motive of the musician from the motives of the record company and try to figure out who is benefiting and calling the shots.
I personally did not need a re-issue of Another Green World or Before and After Science. But Somebody, EG or Island or Warner/AOL thought it would be a good idea; I don't know if Eno even had a say in it.
That's my 2-cents for the night.
Good night
Ambient American
Astralwerks mastering errors.......2005-06-30
Does anyone have the final word on the degree to which Astralwerks (sic) have screwed up these Eno 'remasters'?
'Another Green World' has the first bars of 'Everything merges with the night' missing, 'Climate Study' is missing from this release (More Music For Films), and someone on the Amazon review of 'Music For Films' states that the intro to 'Quartz' on that album is also truncated. Are Astralwerks just a bunch of amateurs or something? Eno must be well pleased with this mess..
Sounds like a collection of unfinished work........2005-06-15
I find it hopelessly ironic that of all the material in the dozen reissues thus far, the one I was most wanting to get my hands on is the one that I find completely extraneous. "More Music For Films", essentially material from the "Music For Films Director's Edition" promo and "Music For Films, Volume 2" (and evidentally largely released on a boxed set some time back) is mostly an uninteresting effort. Quite simply, it feels like a collection of leftovers.
The album sounds like it was recorded in several batches, with material from each session adjacent to each other. This gives a small feeling of unity to each section, but all of the pieces have this unfinished feel about them, as though this was the raw material from which Eno would typically construct his actual pieces.
Its not that its all that bad, "Chemin de Fer" early on is a nice piece featuring some superb fretless bass playing (from Percy Jones), "Reactor" is a nice percussion loop-driven piece with a sublimely irritating lead guitar (although at 1:40, it ends before it starts).... I could go on, but overall, this is a completely unsatisfying listen.
My advice, if you're an Eno fan, get ahold of this, you'll want it. If you're anyone else, digest the proper albums before coming to this one.
Mastering Mistakes.......2005-05-03
No, I haven't purchased this yet as I'm waiting for Virgin/Astralwerks to correct their mastering mistakes. As has already been pointed out "Climate Study" is not on here but is in fact "Approaching Taidu". Also "Fuselli" unless it's a different mix that I can't detect from the sound sample is "Patrolling Wire Borders" and "From The Coast" is in fact "Quartz", both from MUSIC FOR FILMS. Let's hope they replace these repeats with "Dover Beach", the long version of "Signals" and both versions of "Always Returning". On a positive note the actual audio quality sounds promising from the samples I listened to (finer detail).

lovely.......2004-08-29
Being an opera fan, I'm often disappointed by cross-over albums. I agree with one the of the other reviews that mentions Upshaw are being more successful in this type of repertoire. But Murphy is quite lovely. It was nice to hear a few pieces I was unfamiliar with like "The French Song" and "Times Like This"... and I'm a sucker for "Come to my Garden" (even though I REALLY hated the boy soprano!). Overall, a very pleasant disc - perhaps not too deep on interpretation - but beautifully sung.
Lovely, But Bland.......2003-03-14
I've often enjoyed hearing Heidi Grant Murphy at the Metropolitan Opera House. Her crystal-clear soprano is truly beautiful, light and delicate, yet solid enough to handle Strauss and Mozart. Similar singers, most notably Dawn Upshaw, have triumphed in the musical theater repertory, so why not isn't this disc more successful? First of all, Ms. Grant isn't particularly successful as an actress. While some of the songs (most notably "I Have to Tell You") are beautifully realized, most are simply sung, with very little thought as to their meaning for the "character." In recordings a singer has to paint a larger picture, given the absence of sets, costumes, dialogue etc. Perhaps if we could see Grant's face, we'd know what she were feeling; but, of course, we can't. And as the musical director has advised Ms. Murphy to sing everything on the downbeat, the chances of her actually expressing some emotion are slim to none. Additionaly, I find the arrangements to be either unimaginative or intrusive. I will say that I absolutely love the selection of songs here. "Times Like This" is one of my favorite theater songs, as is "New Words." And what a pleasure to see an album of this sort with selections from "She Loves Me" and "Fanny," one not weighted down with the obligatory Sondheim and Lloyd Weber. All in all, this is a pleasant, lovely disc, one which I don't think you'll be sorry to have. But it doesn't compare to Upshaw's Rodgers & Hart CD, Terfel's Alan Jay Lerner disc, or Te Kanawa's Irving Berlin collection, which had the good fortune to be arranged by Jonathan Tunick.
Bright and lovely.......2003-01-31
This is a CD you don't want to miss. An addition to your special collection of all time favorites. Miss Grant Murphy has a voice that is a pure delight of pleasure; a clear and lyricly treat to the senses. Her Choice of music is different and blends well from selection to selection. Her arrangement of The French Song and (Vanilla) Ice Cream is bright and underlined with wonderful humor. Miss Grant Murphy's rendition of If I Were A Bell is just that...a bell...clear and bright.
Do your self a favor and order Times Like This. Bring an early spring into your life.

Customer Reviews:
The child in you -- or your child-- will love this!.......2006-03-11
Kitty Gill presents an array of songs that -- lyrically and melodically -- are beyond the unimaginative monotony that characteristically scars what is called children's music, a genre that ignores a child's innate ability to understand his or her world. Her imaginary character, Pixie Sage, comes crashing through the ceiling, literally, and into our hearts. Listen and be taken by the subtle compositions that even your baby will enjoy along with you as he or she falls asleep on your lap or in your arms. Kitty is touched by a lyrical muse who shows us that imagination and intellect do not have to oppose one another, and, like two wings of the same bird, they can lift us to places that we only visit in our dreams -- if we dare remember them! For children ages zero to nine...
A "must have" for kids who love music.......2004-11-16
This CD is great! We love to sing along with Pixie Sage. We first played it at my little guys birthday party, all the kids and parents loved it. Now, everyone in my family with kids owns it, this is by far the children's favorite music. If you love watching your little ones dance and sing get this CD. It's a sure thing in the kid's music department, it's really great.
