Slippery Ballerina

On The Slippery Ballerina, the follow-up to their Not Dogs . . . Too Simple, Clay and Mark Harper present what they call "a rock and narrative extravaganza" that examines the life of Monkey, a little girl who loves to dance and dreams of becoming a ballerina. Although the Harpers recommend the record for children six years old and older, they also tout it as "fun for the whole dysfunctional family"--which may be a red flag. While The Slippery Ballerina is a far fuller realized production than No Dogs . . ., it also demands more of its listener. The working-class English accents could be hard to decipher, and the humor, much of it concerning the financial greediness that surrounds Monkey's initial success, may be too mature for young children. And then there's the use of the word "schmuck," which some parents may not want to define for inquisitive young ones. Still, the record is enormously inventive and entertaining, and revolves around an important central thought: Happiness comes when you do what you love, and love what you do. As with its successor, this episode in story and song is rocking enough to be unmistakably atypical in the kids' music world. --Alanna Nash
