Customer Reviews:
Porter's BEST Album in Decades is a True Gem !.......2005-01-11
Porter Wagonner has always been one of my favorite country artists, and he was a fixture on TV in this rural area of N.C. when I was growing up in the 60's. His material always exuded a feeling of what "real" country music should be, and he constantly used some of the best pickers in the business, especially in those early days, featuring his classic band "The Wagon Masters".
His volume of recorded work is truly remarkable, while maybe not always reflecting his roots or genius, it still stands up well compared to what you would normally consider as "country music" these days. His classic material recorded in the 60's and up into the 70's was his best, for sure, as later albums became more electrified and suffered from weaker songs and a disturbing monotony in sound, a more modern sound if you will, and it seemed that the golden age of real country had all but faded away into obscurity. Porter continued to release a few interesting projects throughout the 80's and 90's, but his talent has steadfastly continued to grace the stage of the Grand Ole Opry most every Friday & Saturday night for many decades. To me, Porter actually sort of "presides" over each performance of the Opry, and has done so since the passing of the great Roy Acuff. And, more important, Porter's subsequent induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame has cemented his place in the history of country music. To this day I still listen to WSM's Grand Ole Opry every weekend, and yes it's on an old-fashioned AM radio, so you can call me an old-timer if you wish. Porter Wagonner is still going strong, too, even though his voice may not have the power or accuracy that it once did.
This new album was certainly a pleasant surprise, though. Porter's voice on this project is truly awe-inspiring, full of that experienced and aged character that demonstrates why this man's music has endured, through good and not so good. This double-CD project is very well-recorded and his arrangements of these fine old Country Gospel songs are top-notch. This album has become one I listen to on an almost daily basis, and it is truly an inspiration to hear Porter's voice used with such power and control.
Of course, Porter's is famous for his recitations, and this album contains what is probably the most moving performance of his entire career, in my opinion, his "Trouble In The Amen Corner". It always made people stop dead in their tracks, even on his earlier recordings, but this most recent performance is marked by a deep maturity and mellow sincerity in his voice, and if you can listen to this song and have dry eyes at the end, then you certainly have my respect (or pity). Other than listing Penny DeHaven as singing a duet with Porter on "Walk That Lonesome Valley" (which she really nailed!!), the album liner notes are sadly lacking any credits of either who sang all the marvelous back-up or played such masterful music on this project.
Porter's long-time friend Dolly Parton, however, did include a copy of a letter she wrote to him just after hearing this new CD, explaining how she "cried all morning listening - - it brought back such memories of the old songs of the old days - - & hearing you sing so good, too." Guess that says it all.
If you love gospel music, or even if you are just opening that page in your life, you owe it to yourself to pick up this wonderful album from the legendary Porter Wagonner, and then just sit back and listen to what the power of experience, maturity, and testimony can do when you hear these great old songs. Who knows? It may become one of those life-changing things that sneak up on you without you even being aware of why - - and in this new age of computers and noise and rush and hurry and bother, there's nothing wrong with that!!!
Thank You.......2004-08-15
I bought this CD for my Dad, who is 83 years old. I have never known him to enjoy anything so much. He sits and plays it over and over, and sings along. Thanks to Porter Wagoner for all the enjoyment this album has brought to my Dad. I also think this is the best album he has ever recorded.

Porter's best gospel album!.......2003-10-14
Porter Wagoner has been singing gospel music for years, but this has got to be his best in my opinion. I highly recommend it for all Porter Wagoner fans! Buy it. You won't be disappointed.

Not like the "old time" Blackwood Brothers.......2006-11-10
Sound is quite different from Blackwood Brothers albums of 25 years ago. I was rather disappointed.
Essential Blackwood Brothers Country.......2003-09-28
This album is the best of 60s-style country. Porter is a down-home singer with a warm, everyman style, and The Blackwood Brothers add the right dose of gospel and power singing. The classic country instruments, especially Porter's own steel guitarist, give this album a delightful twist. For a modern continuation of this classic, southern gospel sound, don't miss The Blackwood Brothers joining Engelbert Humperdinck in the CD, "Always Hear The Harmony." The Humperdinck-Blackwood Bros. feature has a lot of the same emotional quality asthis CD and is destined for "top in its field" just like this Porter-Blackwood Bros. team-up. 1st tenor great Bill Shaw, probably the greatest-ever gospel tenor, sings on both, and his high voice is unmistakable.

A must have for fans of both!.......2000-11-15
Wow is all you can say about this. A country giant meets a gospel institution & it works quite well! You go from traditional (There's A Higher Power) to true country gospel (Hank Williams' "A House of Gold"). Fans of both Wagoner & the Blackwood Bro's will find much to treasure on this set. This is country gospel at it's best. The only complaint is I feel BMG could've combined both volumes on one CD at a minimum cost. Otherwise, this is great-right down to original artwork and liner notes! A must have!
