Top Pop (Blister)

Editorial Reviews

Despite your best efforts to elbow them aside, Britney and her belly-baring ilk are bound to hustle your 6- to 12-year-old up the steps of the Teenybopper Express before you'd like. Records like this one, which represent the final frontier in parent-picked music, won't slam on the brakes, but they can cause a detour in an uncorrupt and mildly cool direction. Top Pop reinterprets 14 chartbusters that have or will trickle into kids'--actually, everybody's--consciousness, from '70s chestnuts like "Y.M.C.A." to more au courant confections like "Who Let the Dogs Out" and "Kryptonite," striking objectionable swear words along the way. And all respect to Pink ("Get the Party Started"), Destiny's Child ("Survivor"), and Aerosmith ("Theme from Spider-Man"), these 10- to 16-year-old performers step up with a swagger. Attitude pours out of "Pop" and "How I Beat Shaq," and 11-year-old Morgan Burke, the only child to get double-billing here, puts the bark in "Who Let the Dogs Out" and "I Want You Back" (plus, he practically demands comparison with the pre-moonwalk Michael Jackson). If "Twinkle, Twinkle" and "Old MacDonald Had a Farm" score a wimpy 1 on your kids' music-ratings scale, and J Lo's pushing the limits of 10, Top Pop's a respectable 6.5 or 7. It's cool, but it's a compromise--the reasonable way to rock your kids without rocking the boat. --Tammy La Gorce

One of ZZ Top's great gifts is its concision; even in the side-long-jam era of the '70s, the Texans almost always fit 10 cuts on their albums. Surveying two decades of their output, Greatest Hits isn't the perfect overview you might expect, but it's still a pretty darn good driving album. The disc goes easy on the pre-Deguello stuff surveyed on their earlier best-of, and seems to digitally boost the drums on tracks like the 1975 "Tush." Still, later cuts like "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide" and "My Head's in Mississippi" are full-on triumphs of this trio's very weird, very blues-drenched sensibility. --Rickey Wright

I received the CD in just a few days and in great condition!

4 out of 5 stars It's good if you just want the hits.......2007-01-29

While Greatest Hits is the most definitive single disc compilation for ZZ Top on the market, it is missing some of their best songs and doesn't hold up to their best work. 12 of the collection's 18 songs come from 1983 and later with two of the tracks being the "new" songs you often get with a greatest hits set. The four tracks included from Eliminator ("Gimme All Your Lovin'", "Got Me Under Pressure", "Sharp Dressed Man", and "Legs", the last of which is a remixed version) are all top notch and deserve to be here. The three tracks included from Afterburner include the big hits "Sleeping Bag" and "Rough Boy" and the album track, "Planet of Women." While the first two should be included, the excellent hit single, "Stages", is not included. From the lackluster Recycler, we have "Doubleback", "My Head's In Mississippi", and "Give It Up", which are probably the best three songs from the album. The two new tracks include a remake of Elvis Presley's "Viva Las Vegas", which is so full of synths and electronic drums that it may as well have been recorded with The Art of Noise, and the forgettable minor hit "Gun Love." As for the pre-Eliminator tracks, we get 6 in "Tush", "Cheap Sunglasses", "La Grange", "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide", "Tube Snake Boogie", and "Pearl Necklace", all great songs that are now AOR staples. While this is a good compilation that hits most of the high notes, more of the `70s stuff like "Waiting For The Bus"/"Jesus Just Left Chicago", "Heard It On The X", and "I Thank You", along with the `80s hit "Stages", should have been included and the weaker tracks "Give it Up", "Planet of Women", and especially the two "new" tracks should have been left alone. While discs such as Tres Hombres, Deguello, Eliminator, and Fandango! are better albums overall, Greatest Hits will do if you only want the hits.

What can you say about ZZ Top that hasn't already been said. It's a CD that will bring you back in time.

5 out of 5 stars Okalahoma.......2007-07-17

Very good quality reproduction, and enjoyable to listen to the full length movie soundtrack again.

4 out of 5 stars MacRae and Jones head a superb and O.K. adaptation.......2007-03-16

The film adaptation of Oklahoma heralded a technological breakthrough in widescreen cinema just as the original stage musical ushered in the integrated book musical. As such this film adaptation was treated as a special occasion, well-supervised by the creators themselves. The soundtrack, featured here, boasts sterling performances from MacRae and Jones making the most of their portrayals of Curly and Laurey, backed by a charismatic cast and superb orchestrations. And of course let's not forget the enveloping stereo sound that holds up well even today.

Despite being a Hollywood star, Gordon MacRae performs the part of Curly as if he was born to play it even on the stage. He shines vocally in his renditions of Oh, what a Beautiful Mornin' and Surrey with the Fringe on Top. He is well-partnered by Shirley Jones as a fresh and pert Laurey, lending her beautiful voice to the part. Although we don't hear much of her on this soundtrack, her partnering MacRae in People Will Say We're in Love exudes a masterful chemistry, as if they were setting sparks off at each other in their rendition of the song. Gene Nelson makes a dashing Will Parker and is equally well-matched by Gloria Grahame as Ado Annie. Grahame renders I Cain't Say No splendidly and partners Nelson in All er Nothin'. The supporting cast is filled out by Charlotte Greenwood's suitably caustic Aunt Eller and Rod Steiger's Jud. It's a pity that the film cut the song Lonely Room, otherwise Steiger would have better demonstrated the dark hues of the character of Jud. Yet it all adds up to a wonderful renditionh of this classic musical, enough to elicit a spontaneous YEOW! during this year of the Oklahoma centenary.

This EMI-Angel reissue offers one the advantage of the dance music and the main titles. This means that the listener gets the Kansas City and Farmer and the Cowman dance sequences, as well as the extended Dream Ballet. The only downside is the extraneous sound effects lifted from a DVD copy of the movie. Yes I share many of your sentiments that these sound effects tend to grate, and long for Didier Deutsch to have used the original untainted studio vault versions. However, let's at least be thankful that the CD producers have offered us a more comprehensive version of the Oklahoma soundtrack that we could only have dreamt of in the past.

In short, this is a wonderful and valuable addition to the R&H discography, and is an equally celebrated rendition of the score like the original Broadway cast recording. Warmly recommended to those who seek even their first version of Oklahoma.

5 out of 5 stars Broadway in a movie setting at it's very best!.......2007-03-06

I have the original Broadway version, but prefer this movie selection.
The CD is flawless and, in my opinion, there's nothing better than a Rodgers
and Hammerstein musical for music, lyrics and pure joy! This is the best!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-01-30

A great way to introduce oneself to the world of the nearly extinct Hollywood musical.

Top Gun (1986) must be counted one of the most influential movies of the 1980s. It propelled Tom Cruise to superstar status, and jetted director Tony (True Romance, 1994; Enemy of the State, 1998) Scott's career into the stratosphere. It also allowed producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer to perfect their multiplex-friendly blockbuster formula of join-the-dots plot, MTV-inspired visuals and rapid-fire action. Not least, it all but invented the modern pop soundtrack. Certainly it was the success of Simon and Garfunkel's The Graduate (1967) which inspired many song soundtracks in the pre-Star Wars (1977) decade, but since Top Gun, soundtrack pop has been gunning for the top like never before. Two singles dominate the album, Berlin's massive hit, "Take My Breath Away", and Kenny Loggins' "Danger Zone", both co-written by Giorgio Moroder, who also scored Midnight Express (1978) and penned Blondie's "Call Me" from American Gigolo (1980). Most of the remainder is up-beat, energetic American AOR stadium pop-rock by bands like Cheap Trick and Loverboy, huge names at the time of the film's release. Rounding out the collection is the electro-instrumental "Top Gun Anthem" by Harold Faltermeyer, the man behind "The Heat Is On" from Simpson and Bruckheimer's previous box-office bonanza, Beverly Hills Cop (1984). All in all, a landmark soundtrack. --Gary S. Dalkin

Hello everyone. If you are interested in the music written for Top Gun by Harold Faltermeyer you may be able to find a copy of the Top Gun score.......notice I said "MAY BE ABLE TO FIND". As far as I know the original score was never officially released except as an EXTREMELY limited promotional CD (I know because I own a copy). The music is superb (non of that re-recorded junk) and features 11 unreleased tracks by Harold as well as 5 other songs from the film by various artists. Oh, and if you do manage to find a copy for sale, be prepared for a steep price tag! Here is a track listing from the CD:

This soundtrack is a mix. My favorite songs are some of the prototype 80's tracks: Danger Zone, Mighty Wings, & Through the Fire. But it also has some great oldies like Dock of the Bay & Great Balls of Fire. If you haven't seen this movie yet then go out and rent it. Then pick up a copy of the soundtrack.

Album Description

America is a huge, diverse country with Yankee home cooking and Tex Mex cuisine. People ski on frozen Vermont mountains and surf the big waves in sun drenched California. One thing that binds it all together is TV. Television is American culture, a common thread that holds it all together on a nightly basis as we assemble around our living rooms to watch our favorite characters and shows.

Twenty years ago, TVT Records was born with its first release, Television's Greatest Hits. Now after having sold millions of its TV theme compilations around the world, America's #1 independent label for the past 4 years running is returning to its roots. In celebration of TVT's 20th Anniversary, it is releasing the ultimate TV collection, All Time Top 100 TV Themes, featuring themes drawn from all the original sources.

Hearing these theme songs consistenly evokes a strong emotional response, pointing to a time when everyone watched the same TV shows again and again. From I Love Lucy and Green Acres to Batman and The Monkees, to Welcome Back Kotter and M*A*S*H to Pee Wee's Playhouse and Twin Peaks to Friends and Six Feet Under, virtually anyone who grew up American watching television is sure to want a nostalgic piece of their shared cultural past.

2 out of 5 stars Shouldn't Have Been Squeezed on Two CDs.......2007-06-27

As much as I love that they showcased 100 great TV themes, that they are short versions offsets that. The themes for "Friends", "Melrose Place", and "Will and Grace" are over before you can blink an eye! I am particularly disappointed in "The Six Million Dollar Man" theme. It does not include the entire introduction with Steve and the crew communicating during Steve's initial liftoff. Instead, it begins with the crash sound. This collection should really be on 3 CDs, with each theme lengthened to their full potential.

1 out of 5 stars Huge Dissapointment.......2007-05-22

I was very dissapointed with the 2 dvd set I bought on 100 tv themes. they were originals allright, but the songs were just quick soundbytes. they werent full length. The cheers theme is over 2 1/2 minutes long. In this set its only a minute long. Hill st blues the same thing. Good times theme has been reduced to .44 seconds as was mary tyler moore, and many others. They should have made this a 3-4 cd set and included all the songs full length. I never would have bought this had I known they only included 25% of the song length. No one mentioned this on the reviews, I am the only one bringing up this major , major , shortcoming.

3 out of 5 stars television theme songs.......2007-05-17

For some reason, I thought that the tv theme songs would play in their entirety on these CDs. I did not realize that they were the shortened versions designed for tv, i.e., the abbreviated ones we all remember. That being said, the CDs are great for what they are - they are simply not what i had hoped.

4 out of 5 stars A Fun CD.......2007-05-11

My first consideration as to whether or not to buy this CD was to check if the themes from my three favorite shows were included...and there they were; M*A*S*H, Magnum and Moonlighting.

I wish some of the older classics were included such as Bonanza, 77 Sunset Strip, American Bandstand, Mickey Mouse Club and Howdy Doody Time.

The only problem is what would you delete in order to include them. Maybe Six Feet Under and The Banana Splits.

Thanks so much for the Honeymooners, Twilight Zone, I Love Lucy and the Lone Ranger!

This is a fun CD to play and sing along with in the car. Passengers enjoy playing Name That Tune!

5 out of 5 stars For the Effort.......2007-04-01

I gave five stars since I am impressed with the compilation itself, even if not alwys the quality of sound. Certainly, any effort to improve upon that would result in a product that would be much more attractive. In the meantime, this is OK.

Something to be aware of: The themes are always the most recent. Some shows re-recorded the theme later in the series and that then became the theme for even re-runs. So, the Gilligan's Island theme has, "The Professor and Maryanne," and not, "...and the rest," Alice is the later version; the All in the Family version is from a special they did where the song was re-sung and the line, "Gee our old Lasalle ran great," is sung very clearly, etc.

In the future, perhaps we can get something with all of the versions of the theme songs on it for those who like the earlier versions better.

Whatever the case, there certainly is a desire for this music. I also don't doubt that there is a desire for other songs sung in some shows. Some of the musical numbers from Gilligan's Island were a hoot (remember the Honey Bees?). Other shows had songs that were fun, from the Brady Bunch to Bewitched and beyond.

Anyhoo, this set will certainly bring some smiles to nostalgia-oriented folks. It also can be fun for DJs. Slip "The Love Boat" in between some techno and I'm sure you will create an amusing scene.

Recorded during their controversial 2003 tour, these two discs romp through an ample sampling of hits ("Wide Open Spaces," "There's Your Trouble," "Goodbye Earl," "Travelin' Soldier") as well as beloved album cuts ("Hello Mr. Heartache," "Some Days You Gotta Dance"). Twangy and cheeky all the way, the group rides an energy wave that continues through the stunning two-song encore of "Top of the World" and "Sin Wagon." Yet as powerful as the full-band performances are, the trio's true essence emerges during the acoustic moments--"White Trash Wedding," "Ready to Run," and "Lil' Jack Slade" among them--as well as the Texas shuffler "Hello Mr. Heartache." Some acts might have tried to gloss over a flap like the one Natalie Maines's anti-Bush administration remarks caused. Not here. Patty Griffin's "Truth No. 2" (from the Chicks' Home album) faces that issue head-on. But beyond the political tempests--and Music Row's still-bruised feelings over their contractual firefights with their label--this collection affirms one truth: the Chicks remain the best hope of bringing country into the 21st century with postmodern vitality and its traditions intact. --Rich Kienzle

Regardless if you love or hate what natalie had to say about Bush. Your can never say these ladies dont have guts and the sure will to not ever play nice. Natalie and the dixie chicks may never play nice. Strong will's in country music dont come around much. The music on this audio cd is strong, full or spite, to the point and in your face. Why hide the fact you live in a free country. Where as of today, Bush still hasnt taken away our right to free speech. The songs are all chart burners and a wonderful full range of musically talented songs.

5 out of 5 stars Chicks On Top of the World.......2007-04-11

I'm new to the Dixie Chicks, but they have become one of my top artists. First I got "Long Way Home" and like it so well that I rented the Top of the World tour video. Then I had to have the CD. This is a great CD.

Try it, you'll like it.

1 out of 5 stars Anti- Americans.......2007-04-05

Don't Buy they are anti american and do not support our troops who give them the freedom of living in the USA

4 out of 5 stars THEY SURE CAN SING BUT CAN THEY REALLY PLAY?.......2007-03-23

This is my first Dixie Chicks purchase. Just wanted to check them out. I've only seen random clips on television. They choose decent tunes to play. Although I'm a little confused as to their purpose. The instruments they play - guitar, fiddle, and banjo - that's Old Time string band instruments; many Old Time Music and bluegrass bands have the exact same instrumentation. However, the Chicks don't play any traditional tunes. They are more of a straight ahead Nashville Pop/Country singing group. Yes, they hold and play their instruments, and I'm sure they're good players, but you can't really tell by this recording - I couldn't hear much of the banjo, and the fiddler is pretty good. I guess the only way to tell is if they ever got bold enough to make a recording with just them playing and singing.
Their tour had an army of additional musicians in support.
They sure can sing, though. The harmonies are unbelievably good.
If you are interested in a really good all female group who are excellent musicians and singers who sing a mix of traditional tunes and original tunes, check out UNCLE EARL. Their newest release is produced by former Led Zep bassist John Paul Jones, who has developed a fascination with traditional American music, even going as far as learning how to play the fiddle. Uncle Earl's latest is titled Waterloo Tennessee and is available right here on Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Live and let LIVE.......2007-02-16

The best gauge to hear a performer or a group is live in concert (or a cd of the concert( Think KISS live or KISS UNPLUGGED are great examples of how good live is). A friend gave me a copy of this Dixie Chicks CD as an early birthday gift, after they won the Grammies.

This 2002 concert is a great showcase for the Chicks. Listening to them on this CD, I feel like I am in the middle of the concert in the best seats in the house.

The production quality is great. The chicks are in fine form and this CD concert is a proof that the grammies wins are no fluke.

I want more of their CDS now

Album Description

One of the world's greatest rock 'n' roll bands ever to strut the 50 States, these sharp-dressed Texas titans-Billy F. Gibbons, Frank Beard, and Dusty Hill-are a righteously hell rain' power trio boasting a 30-plus year hit-making legacy, both in the studio and at concert arenas. With their revved up blues 'n' boogie, they always make the most of their Texas birthright with with a distinctive sound that shakes up rock, blues, soul, garage-funk, Americana, and more. Nowhere is their force of nature musicianship better displayed than on these two album classics, revved up wtih red-hot bonus rarities. "You know what I'm talkin' about...an how how how how."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Everything's alright..........2007-06-09

Along with Fandango!, Tres Hombres is essential ZZ Top. There is one fantastic song after another on this recording, and while the FM staples might be what lures many in, it is the lesser known songs that sink the hook firmly in place. Precious and Grace, Hot, Blue, and Righteous, and Master of Sparks are all excellent songs that many have not heard before. The stinging, tasteful, and concise guitar work of Billy Gibbons can never be undervalued and perhaps one of the finer qualities of this master is how he never overplays. The band is always tight and razor sharp and this is an album that I never tire of. This is not only an essential Top album, it is a vital part of any rock fan's collection. ZZ Top is one of America's best bands and this brilliant cd demonstrates why.

4 out of 5 stars Top's 1st Breakthrough (second being Eliminator).......2007-04-24

This is where Top buckled down, got their sound straightened out, and focused on delivering one killer blues-rocker after another. Yeah, they had done so before with Rio Grande Mud (another good one), but this was a tighter, better album. Which is why it produced the group's breakthrough hit, the dirty-voiceover-meets-Hip Shake-riff-meets-stellar-guitar-solo La Grange. It didn't break the Top 40, but it came close enough and is today justly a classic rock radio staple. Speaking of which, I assume you've also heard cuts like Waiting for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago and Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers. Both songs are essential ZZ. Scorching, brilliantly simple blues-rock. Actually, that's what the whole album's like, so if you like those you shouldn't forget about Master of Sparks, Move Me on Down the Line or Precious and Grace. Those seven are good enough to make this ZZ's best album ever. But it's second to Deguello because some of it isn't very impressive - Hot Blue and Righteous could be my least favorite classic-era ZZ Top song, I don't know. But I'm not a fan of it. Ballads never were Top's strong suit in the first place. I'm not exactly blown away by Shiek or Have You Heard Either. But this should belong to anyone who appreciates the little ol' blues band from Texas.

5 out of 5 stars zz top tres hombres.......2007-03-28

great to hear it again. always wanted to buy it again. brings back memories.the first 3 albums were the best.jojo

5 out of 5 stars Captures the ZZ Top spirit.......2007-03-26

If you want one ZZ Top album to capture their spirit, it's not Eliminator, it's Tres Hombres. La Grange captures their classic Texas shuffle in a song that's become a movie soundtrack staple. Waitin' for the Bus and Jesus Just Left Chicago are outstanding songs in their own right - the slide from one to the other is one of the smoothese medley transitions in rock. 2 great old school blues tunes fused together. Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers captures the rowdy side of the band, while Hot, Blue and Righteous shows their love of the classic auto. Truly a definitive work of ZZ Top.

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY! The original mix for this classic album has been restored!.......2007-03-12

Having grown up with this album on vinyl, I've been consistently disappointed with all the CD releases of this gem. Buried under overdubs and mountains of reverb (most noticeable on the drums), somebody should've been smacked around for allowing the CDs to be released. With this re-issue, they finally got it right: crisp, immediate, in your face. Exactly what I remember from the vinyl but cleaned up. While the added live tracks are a welcome addition, the sound quality isn't the best. Nonetheless, this remains, in my opinion, ZZ Top's best work and a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars ZZ Top for Audiophiles.......2007-06-08

If anyone gave this cd set less than a five star rating then you need to spend more than $49.95 on your audio gear. After listening to the entire set, both cds, this ZZ Top collection is some of the best remastered audio I've heard. It displays as "HD CD" on the processor and is SACD quality sound. Every track is balanced with parallel volume levels and the recording does not sound like a collection of greatest hits as much as a new recording that was performed in the studio for this release. All thanks to Bill Ham. Audiosnobs take note, this is a great listen.... "they gotta lota nice girls...."

4 out of 5 stars The Best American Rock n' roll Band since Creedence.......2007-05-26

Creedence Clearwater Revival was probably the first rock band to really bring back the original boogie rock sound originated by Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and the other rock n' roll pioneers of the 1950's. When Creedence broke up in 1972, a gritty blues-rock trio from Texas called ZZ Top scored their first hit "La Grange" a year later and became the next band to carry that infectious three-chord boogie sound into the 70's and 80's at a time when most rock bands were focusing on heavy metal and other styles of rock.

Dusty Hill and Frank Beard make up one of the most rock solid rhythm sections in rock n' roll, and Billy Gibbons is surely one of the hottest blues-rock guitar masters out there. These three guys are responsible for some of the best blues-flavored rock n' roll of the past three decades, and all their classic hits and best-known material is here in this excellent two-disc compilation released in 2004. The first CD covers the best of the band's blues-flavored 70's material, and their more commercial, mainstream rock hits of the 80's are compiled on the second CD.

The only problem with this collection is the last half of the second disc. Rather than making the set more comprehensive by including some of ZZ's later material from the 90's, we get an average live recording of "Cheap Sunglasses" that adds nothing to the original version, a useless remake of Elvis Presley's "Viva Las Vegas" {why did they choose to cover one of Elvis' worst songs?}, and unnecessary "remix" versions of "Legs" and the forgettable "Velcro Fly" which is surely one of ZZ Top's weakest songs. This is still the best greatest hits compilation currently available for the casual fan though. All of the band's best-loved material is presented here with great remastered sound.

Few bands from 40 years ago are still out there today with the original members in place. ZZ Top has survived into the new century and are still rockin' as strong as ever. I got the chance to catch them in concert on their 2003 tour with Ted Nugent and Kenny Wayne Shepherd as the opening acts. Billy, Dusty, and Frank delivered a sound so full and tight that it sounded like four or five guys on stage instead of three! What is sorely needed is a live concert DVD of these legendary rock n' roll hall of famers that has never been issued after all these years.

If you want to discover what REAL rock n' roll is all about, get a copy of this collection along with CCR's classic "Chronicle" CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great music!.......2007-04-03

I have been listening to ZZ Top over the years, but never had an album. I recently purchased this one to get a glimpse into the music. I recognized some of the songs from the radio, and found some new personal favorites.

Great music,~ I use some of the songs in my daily workout, gets me pumped for the day!

Rock on, Gentlemen!

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE GREATS, ROCK FOR BAD KIDS.......2006-11-03

The weird thing about ZZ Top has to do with the remix jobs that were done on all of their early albums in the eighties and early nineties. ZZ Top, somehow went through a real heavy faze of synthing their drums on all of their albums between 1983 and 1990, and when they released their seventies albums onto CD the drums were remixed to give those albums a synth drum sound as well. To this day pretty much any Top album you buy on CD has been metamorphasized. Quite a shame since early Top had a real nice, gritty, dancin' in the dirt kind of sound. It's best to buy those albums on vinyl, cassette, or even 8-track.. way more bad Ace quality.

HOWEVER!!!!
The red disc in this 2-disc greatest hits packaged focuses specially on treating those old seventies rockers right, and for the first time on CD these songs sound the way they were meant to sound. RAW and glorious. This two disc collection is a must have, simply for the first disc alone.
Just listen to the difference on obvious songs like LA GRANGE and TUSH. The sound is supremely better here than on that other greatest hits pack, the one with the blonde bomshells on the cover? I bought that one years ago and couldn't figure out why my ZZ Top wasn't rockin'. Now I'm graced with songs that totally blow the speakers off, like JUST GOT PAID and BEER DRINKERS AND HELL RAISERS. They sound mint. Also a huge plus is the boozy JUST GOT BACK FROM BABY... totally forgot how much I dug that tune.

The Aqua Blue disc focuses on the 1980's pop MTV stuff. Some of it is ok. The first track TUBE SNAKE BOOGIE should have been on the red disc, but the rest belongs on this Diz-nee like rock disc. Like the eighties club version of Legs and the skinny tie martini version of Viva Las Vegas. Eh. BUT!! as I said... The Red Disc is where it's at.

If you BAD, then you should buy most of your ZZ Top stuff on wax, and keep this red disc handy to blow out some hot chickies speakers when the time is right. ZZ TOP truly was one of the greats.

THE BAND: Billy Gibbons (guitars, vocals, hermonica, fiddle, baritone sax, keyboards), Dusty Hill (bass, vocals, tenor sax, keyboards), Frank Beard (drums, percussion, vocals, alto sax). Bill Ham (manager, producer, inspiration).

THE DISCS: (2004) 38 tracks on two discs clocking in at approximately 154 minutes (78+ on Disc-1, 75+ on Disc-2). Included with the discs is an 18-page booklet containing a 12 pages of history and retrospective on the band, song titles/credits and chart success, assorted pictures, what songs came from which albums; 14 album covers pictured on 1 page, and thank you's. Digitally remastered sound. Label - Warner Bros.

ALBUM REPRESENTATION: ZZ Top's First Album (3), Rio Grande Mud (3), Tres Hombres (4), Fandango! (5), Tejas (2), Deguello (4), El Loco (2), Eliminator (4), Afterburner (5), Recycler (2), Greatest Hits (1), Promo Singles (3).

COMMENTS: 30+ years and still chugging along. ZZ Top has proven it's ability to rock & roll over the years. Complete with their trademark Texas-blues fused rock, overly long beards, (probably not cheap) sunglasses, love of fast hot rods, and seemingly countless videos on MTV. The liner notes are extensive in regards to the birth of the band - touching on family, teenage garage bands (The Moving Sidewalks & The Warlocks), running into producer Bill Ham (backstage at a Doors concert), first gig (1970), opening shows for Jimi Hendrix, etc. Outside of the 4-disc box set that's overly priced - as of 2004 this is now the best ZZ Top compilation available. The two other most notable 'best of' pacakges are now expendable. 9 of 10 songs are here on "Rancho Texicano" from ZZ Top's first 'Best Of' compilation (1977)... only song missing is "No Back Door Love Affair". 15 of the 18 songs off ZZ Top's "Greatest Hits (1992) are here as well (missing are "Gun Love", "Give It Up" and "Planet Of Women"). All of the omissions are OK in my book. The only songs I would have removed from "Rancho" would be "Mexican Blackbird" and "Woke Up With Wood"... and replaced them with the strangely absent "TV Dinners" and/or "Concrete And Steel". Overall though, the 38 songs are simply dead on accurate. All songs are the original studio versions except the last 2 dance remixes of "Legs" and "Velcro Fly" (you do however get the original versions of these 2 songs earlier on the disc), and 2 live songs ("Cheap Sunglasses" and "Thunderbird"). Anyone else find it interesting when reading the liner notes, that Billy, Frank, and Dusty all play the saxophone? Every rock & roll collection needs some ZZ TOP and this is the ideal place to start. Great set of discs (5 stars).

5 out of 5 stars Back to the Good Old Days.......2006-03-12

I purchased this CD for a play I was directing and the time period was late 1950's. Since I was a teenager then, and had not heard those songs in quite a few years, I decided to play the music at intermission for the audience. It was terrific!
The quality of the CD is clear, and the original artists were a joy to listen to. What a great experience! Billboard's Top Rock & Roll Hits are the best~~~

5 out of 5 stars The Early Kings of Rock & Roll Ruled 1957.......2002-02-10

"Billboard Top Rock & Roll Hits: 1957" is one of the most impressive collections from this decade. All you have to do is to look at the lineup, which features two Elvis Presley hits along with classics from Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Paul Anka and The Everly Brothers. You might not remember Buddy Knox and The Diamonds, but I bet you remember their respective hits, "Party Doll" and "Little Darlin'." If you cannot find five cuts on this album that you would like to add to your music collection, then it has to be because you have a lot of CDs and already own most of these classic rock and roll hits. There is a whole lot of shakin' go on with this album, one of the very best of the Billboard collections.

4 out of 5 stars Brings Back Warm Memories of 1957.......2001-10-25

The one thing I remember most about 1957 was that the Milwaukee Braves beat the New York Yankees in the world series, with Lew Burdette winning all three of his starts.

As for the songs of 1957 this album is a nice sample. As usual you can trust Billboard to give you the original hits by the original performers. "All Shook Up" is one of Elvis' better songs from his early years. "Wake Up Little Susie", Everly Brothers, was probably considered a little risque for the time. "Diana" was a top notch hit for Paul Anka and still sounds good after 40+ years. "Party Doll" and "That'll Be The Day" were hits that I was luke warm about even back then. "Jailhouse Rock" was a smash for Elvis, but it has lost it's flavor over the years.

"Little Darlin'" has always been my favorite record from the 50's. The first time I heard it was on the old tv show "Lucky Strike's Hit Parade". Since there was no such thing as oldies radio back then I didn't hear any more after it dropped off the "Hit Parade" chart. But a few years later I found a 78RPM version of "Little Darlin'" on the Mercury label, which I still have. No, that's not a typo, it reall is a 78RPM.
"Peggy Sue" was probably, imho, Buddy Holly's best record. "School Days" and "Whole Lotta Shaking Going On" round out this offering from Billboard.

If your looking for bang for your oldies buck this one is worth the price.

3 out of 5 stars CD doesn't include the Top 4 hits.......1999-09-24

Billboard's book on the Top 40 hits by year shows that the Top 4 hits of 1957 was DON'T FORBID ME, TOO MUCH, YOUNG LOVE (Sonny James), and YOUNG LOVE (Tab Hunter), none of which were included on the CD. They also listed 20 songs making the list that year but the CD only had 10 songs on it.

5 out of 5 stars Decent Gathering of Big, Big Hits.......1998-06-29

Most collectors will already have these tracks in their CD library, but neophytes and others who want only the cream of the rock & roll crop from 1957 will be pleased with this CD. All original versions.

3 out of 5 stars Where's Kind Of A Drag?.......2002-05-20

I bid on this one and purchased it based on the song listing provided. Kind Of A Drag by The Buckinghams is NOT ON THIS CD no matter what the song listing says! Even the photo of the CD cover does not have it listed. Only is the actual song listing on the sight the one that lists this missing song. Bummer!

5 out of 5 stars it's a happening.......2001-12-04

all the original songs in stereo
Little bit of soul actually sounds dated for '67 should be like '64
Soul Man,the great screetching sound(the blues brothers did a version of soul man)
Incense and Peppermints-what do the words mean?groovy man, cool psychedelic tune
Gimme Some Lovin'-another 'soul' song i think its steve winwood in the band
I Think We're Alone Now-another tommy james hit, children behave!
Happy Together, the turtles big hit that everyone was singing that year, classic pop style harmonies
Windy i used to think it was wendy for years, but another fine harmony by the association
Groovin' the rascals slow summertime ballad
the Letter- i think the 1st song to have airplane sound effects
Respect hmmm aretha's sock it to me anthem
if you want to hear some songs from '67 this is a good way to know them for the year, they were all popular and had good pop crafted tunes that are easy to listen to ,you still hear them on oldies stations as a regular playlist.
