The music becomes part of you..........2007-07-08
The Scarlet Pimpernel is so rich and lyrical, and the story is so compelling, it has become part of who I am. Delivered by a magnificent cast, the music is visceral. Take a ride on the "Carousel" and go "Into the Fire." Vive'!
A piece of greatness.......2007-07-02
Each of the three official Scarlet Pimpernel recordings have things to offer, but this is probably a good choice for starters. In my opinion, Rex Smith on this recording and Terrance Mann on the OBC both do a phenominal job on "Falcon In The Dive" and "Where's The Girl." The same goes with Rachel York and Christine Andreas's performances-- although I tend to prefer Rachel a bit more. Both of the re-recorded tracks by her are simply amazing. Although I can understand why this production never had much of a staged success, the score is simply gorgeous.
SCARLET PIMPERNEL .......2007-06-15
I have a cassette version (yep, a cassette!) of this musical, as I collect
musicals for professional reasons.....I like Frank Wildhorn's music, but the first and foremost reason I bought THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL is because
my favorite actor Terrence Mann originated the role of CHAUVELIN. His cover of WHERE'S THE GIRL sends little shivers up my spine....wooo! That song is worth the price the CD! Teri
Brilliant Musical.......2007-05-24
The music has everything - romance, wit, lush melodies, slapstick comedy. Quite the best music in a musical show for some years. I can't wait for the show to be produced in the U.K.
Quite Fantastic.......2007-05-13
This was the first time I had ever heard the Scarlet Pimpernel's music. I first stumbled onto the fact that there was a Scarlet Pimpernel musical when I was surfing YouTube and came across a music video which consisted of a recording of 'Falcon in the Dive'.
I was spell-bound. After hearing snippets of some of the other songs, i ordered this CD. I was a little surprised when I got it to find some pieces that I didn't remember seeing in the libretto. However, I have since discovered that there are quite a number of different recordings with some variety in the pieces that are included.
It is a truly charming and impressive sountrack. Douglas Sills impressed me deeply with his wide range of talent. He transposes himself from a heart-wrenching sincerity (The Prayer) to a glriously hilarious foppishness (The Creation of Men, The Scarlet Pimpernel). For someone with such a wonderful voice, he does do an exquisitely inane laugh.
Christine Andreas was very sweet as Marguerite, though I felt she over-did the tremulo slightly.
I was blown away by Terrence Mann. His Chauvelin was magnificent. Powerful, passionate, soothing, and vengeful. In the musical, I felt, Chauvelin regained some humanity.
The pieces are clever and vibrant, covering an impressive range of emotions. The lyrics can be full of pathos, or extraordinarily witty, and I enjoyed the CD very much indeed.
The only regret I have is that I am unlikely ever to see the stage performance. I can heartily reccomend this soundtrack to anyone who enjoys the Scarlet Pimpernel, or indeed anyone who appreciates fine singing.

intriguing Broadway flop..........2006-09-23
A singing Sherlock Holmes? It happened in 1965 with BAKER STREET, the ill-fated, ill-conceived Broadway musical written by Marian Grudeff and Raymond Jessel, with book by Jerome Coopersmith. Taking as it's starting point the original "Sherlock Holmes: A Scandal in Bohemia" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the final product bore a closer similarity to a second-rate variation on "My Fair Lady", with Holmes and Watson accompanied by lovely singer Irene Adler, traipsing all over London, closely pursued by arch-enemy Professor Moriarty.
The one thing that BAKER STREET has in it's favour is a fabulous cast, including Shakespearean veteran Fritz Weaver as Sherlock Holmes, Martin Gabel as Moriarty, Peter Sallis as Watson and Inga Swenson as Irene.
Fresh from the national tour of "110 in the Shade", Inga Swenson shines with the lion's share of musical numbers, including "I'm in London Again" (cut shortly after the opening), "Letters" and "Finding Words for Spring". "I'd Do It Again" is the perfect 11 o'clock number. "Cold Clear World" is an ideal summation of the Holmes character, and Weaver delivers handsomely as well.
For all BAKER STREET's similarities to "My Fair Lady", Weaver and Swenson had the last laugh, when they were quite ironically reunited for the 1968 City Center revival. BAKER STREET also faced some competition from other musicals of the 1965 season ("Half a Sixpence", "Fade Out-Fade In" and "Golden Boy"), but gamely hobbled along for 313 performances at the Broadway Theatre, moving to the Martin Beck shortly before it closed.
Decca Broadway's CD premiere of the original cast album is crisply remastered. Bonus tracks comprise of Richard Burton's take on "A Married Man"; and Kai Winding's orchestra performing "Baker Street Mystery" (adapted from the "London Underground" sequence).
Necessary! Necessary! Necessary!.......2006-07-10
1. There were two Broadway shows that somehow unfairly did not get the "press & praise", or whatever, to get the attention of the theatre-going public to catch on and become smash hits.
2. Luckily for us, there were recordings of these two Broadway shows on lp.
3. Sadly, for those of us who enjoyed those old lp albums and wished and waited for years and years for them to be remastered to cds, it seemed we would never be able to enjoy these "lost" scores ever again.
4. Now, through some lucky stroke of unlikely chance, we have recently been twice blessed with the remastering and release of BOTH of them on compact disk! All I can say is "There IS a God!" and also "Thank You", "Thank You", "Thank You" to those responsible for the "saving" and "preservation" of these two works by digitizing and releasing them for us again.
One of these two works is "Cyrano" with the great portrayl by Christopher Plummer of certainly one of the greatest characters in all literature. This show sadly closed after only a very few performances. The songs, while not really "great" are certainly quite listenable--but ONE, is spectacular and makes it worth the cost of the whole album, and that is "You Have Made Me Love"--what a winner it is!
The second of these works is "Baker Street" with Fritz Weaver and Inga Swenson. Luckily, I was fortunate enough to see this one before it closed, also, shortly after it opened. I could never understand why it did not catch on. Weaver and Swenson were simply marvelous, it was exciting, funny, and had great tunes and catchy lyrics. I dispaired for years over the non-release of this show on compact disc. I even wrote Universal, who has the rights to Decca's catalogue, and they blew me off. Then, out of the blue this spring there it was listed as a pre-release on amazon here! I immediately went to my local music shop and ordered a copy. And guess what.......there is a bonus track of the Great Richard Burton singing the best song from the show "A Married Man"!
If you love Broadway Cast albums, you need these two disks. If you remember the shows, you need these two disks. And lastly, if you are totally unfamiliar with these two works, you need these two disks. In short--You Need These Disks! Period!
Take my word, both of these albums are wonderful "keepers" that you will listen to over and over, both because they are unusual and not so well known, and also because they are truly great works. I wish you much happy listening to them. ~operabruin
An Enjoyable Surprise.......2006-06-29
I have had the record album of Baker Street for years, but have not been able to play it for a loooong time. My parent's owned a copy, and around the time of my early teens when I got into Sherlock Holmes, I listened to it and was quite delighted with it.
I purchased the cd with some trepidation, not knowing if it would have the same affect on me now that I am in my early 40's. Although a song that I loved back in the day, does not resonate with me now...others do. All in all a delightful musical.
If you are into musicals one can hear elements of "My Fair Lady" and "Oliver!" as well as early hints of "Sweeney Todd" types of musical stylings.
What makes this an even better cd is the booklet that describes the show, its changes, and its problems.
If you are into classic musicals and/or a true Sherlock Holmes fan you will probably enjoy this.
HOORAH FOR BAKER STREET - AT LAST!!.......2006-03-09
I was lucky enough to see this lush musical twice - once on opening night and the second time when they changed Inge Swenson's opening number (I thought that "I'm in London Aagin" a much better and more appropriate opening number for Irene). I sorry though that the second number was not put on as an extra on this CD for posterity - it may never have been recorded. I have been waiting for years for this to appear on CD - well worth the wait. Inge Swenson is absolutely glorious and well balanced against the cold, clear portrait of Fritz Weaver's Holmes. Then there is the exhuberance of Teddy Green, who also brought his great presence to Darling of the Day. The musical may have been a 'flop' but I am sure that those who saw and loved it will always have fond memories of a 'hit'. An intriguing score with the soaring voice of Swenson so very memorable. It will more than likely never be revived to the level it was originally produced but thank you Decca for bringing this marvelous musical to life again on CD! Now how about "A Time For Singing".
A FASCINATING, HIGHLY ANTICIPATED MUSICAL . . . . .......2006-02-22
Fascination with "Baker Street, a Musical Adventure of Sherlock Holmes" during the years since the final curtain came down at the Martin Beck Theatre on the night of November 14, 1965 has grown to the point that Decca Broadway has finally released - for the first time on CD - the long out-of-print original cast recording. All of us who share an interest in the history of the American musical should raise a glass of stout and say, "Well done, mates."
I've probably listened to my LP no more than once or twice, but "Baker Street" always has maintained a special place in my memory. It is, after all, one of the two recorded shows that features my all-time favorite actress/singer - and fellow Nebraskan - Inga Swenson. First appearing in "The New Faces of 1956," she went on to win the 1957 Theatre World Award for "The First Gentleman" and understudied Julie Andrews ("Camelot") before receiving her first Tony nomination for "110 in the Shade." ( In spite of its wonderful Tom Jones/Harvey Schmidt score and Ms. Swenson's outstanding performance, RCA has had the chutzpah to drop the OC recording from its catalogue. Go figure.)
I must admit that I was disappointed the first time I listened to the CD. For the most part, the score sounded derivative and uninspired. What disappointed me most was the fact that, as wonderful as Ms. Swenson is, the songs she is given to sing can't hold a candle to those in "110 in the Shade." Furthermore, one gets the impression, just from listening, that the creators of this show never really decided what the focus should be. Instead of ending Act I with a dramatic musical spot, it ends with a "Perils of Pauline" ticking time bomb. Additionally, the final number, sung by a band of thieves, falls quite some time before the end of the show, which ends with Holmes disappearing into the fog, presumably on his way to America in romantic pursuit of Irene Adler (Ms. Swenson).
Only after reading the published script (Doubleday & Company) and listening for a second time, did I come to appreciate the way the musical numbers fit into the play. Not only was I able to better appreciate the songs, but now, for the life of me, I can't get "What a Night This Is Going To Be" out of my head!!!
With Oliver Smith's Tony-winning sets, Motley's period costumes and the Bill Baird Marionettes enacting the Diamond Jubilee parade, it must have been a fun show to see. But 1965 was the year of "Man of LaMancha" & "Sweet Charity;" "Hello, Dolly" & "Fiddler on the Roof" were still going strong. "Baker Street" closed after 311 performances, with a loss to its investors.
Recommended, especially because of Inga Swenson. ALSO recommended is "Holmes and Watson Sing," Ken Mandelbaum's expert critique of the "Baker Street" CD and fascinating background of the show. If you buy this recording - and I hope you will - then you must read this article. You can find it at www.Broadway.com.

Early beautiful meditative Cage.......2005-01-26
You will not be disappointed or dismissive of this early music, primarily for prepared piano, an instrument that has sort of fallen out of existence. I know of no vigorous repertoire that had followed Cage's innovations. The idea for placing nuts and bolts, woodscrews and erasers between the piano's internal strings was from Henry Cowell, a piano timbral innovator in his own right. Cage developed the instrument as an accompaniment to the performances of Merce Cunningham dance in the early Forties, and the idea simple took off toward theatre, toward performance art and associative images, Lincoln Kirstein also commissioned works from Cage. Well here you get the full weight of this repertoire, and my favorite is "Perilous Night", it reveals the "subjectivity" residing in Cage despite his numerous attempts to circumvent his persona, Well it comes through here although you always sense that timbre and rhythm remain the primary focus of this early music. Also the un=prepared works, single exposed threadbare lines are what interested early Cage .The timbral differences of the piano preparation are interesting in and of itself and seem to engage concept and image;as "prelude and meditation",a minimal work of three four lines, only a few strings are prepared, or the "Music for Marcel Duchamp" where only the middle register of the piano is utilized with a single melody written in alto clef. This work has more a lyric interest yet having a deeply sombre feel to it.
The more expansive "Sonatas and Interludes" are all here, and there are now dozens of recordings,(like a standard within the repertoire,as Chopin's "preludes") and some play them fast(Joshua Pierce) others slow. I prefer the John Tilbury, Decca recording (now unavailable) but here as well the renderings/readings are quite engaging. The negative feature to all this music is that the timbre seems to never suggest anything more than what it is, it is like anything remains beautiful. Perhaps that is why there has not been a "thousand flowers" blooming from this instrument. It has astatic quality to it,one-dimensional. Cage you feel knew this and did introduce as much variety, distributions of densities, and rhythms, textures, and the structural plan as well adheres to maintaining an agenda for variety. The "Sonatas" here being the primary focus, the exposition, and the "Interludes" the digression relief from the gestural whole.

There can't be more than a handful of parents around who aren't already familiar with the concept behind Blue's Clues, arguably the most popular children's show of the late 1990s. For those that aren't, here's the scoop: a cast of computer-animated characters, led by the blue dog of the show's title, populate an equally animated universe. Blue's human, Steve--the one nonanimated cast member--is the show's slightly dimwitted host. Each episode revolves around Steve's attempt to decipher a trio of clues to figure out what Blue wants to do that day; what makes the show so popular is that the audience is not only invited to participate but is inevitably given enough information to come to the right answer before Steve does. In porting the concept over to an album, the producers had to make some adaptations, but it works remarkably well: the first half involves finding Blue's three clues, and most of the Cajun-flavored music is already familiar from the show. There are a few fun touches (including a brief dance remix), and fans of the show--your kids are sure to fit in that category--will love it. --Randy Silver
Customer Reviews:
We love it!.......2002-01-26
Although we have been listening to this CD every time we are in the car (this CD and Blue's Big Musical CD are the only CDs my 2 year old son will listen to)for the past two months--we love it! I can't decide who enjoys it more--me or my son! While many kids' CDs are painful for the parents to listen to, this one keeps getting better and better (as does Blue's Big Musical). I highly recommend it!
Outstanding Kids Cd! Best of the Blue's Clues Titles.......2001-12-09
My 2 year old son has all 4 Blue's Clues cds and he like this one the most. The songs make him get up and dance, and the lady who plays the part of grandma sounds like the singer, Jewel. She has a very pretty voice. The only Blue's Clues Cd that I wouldn't necessarily buy again would be "Goodnight Blue". It's fine, but too slow...not upbeat enough for playtime. The other 3 Blue's Clues titles are superior to "Goodnight Blue" in my opinion. "Blue's Big Treasure" is our 1st choice of the 4 if you are purchasing your 1st Blue's Clues cd.
We just can't get enough Blue!!.......2001-11-16
My 2 year old son loves Blue and only Blue!! He also loves music, so when I came across the blue's clue's music, we couldn't resisit. We were not disappointed! I love the music as much as he does; I find myself singing along all time! The music is very well written and will keep even the pickiest parents jammin' in the car with their kids!! We also have "goodnight, blue" and it is wonderful, but beware: it makes even me drowsy when listening to it in the car!!
you can tell the Blue's team really likes kids.......2001-08-23
A lot of things are marketed to kids that aren't very good. In contrast, every product I have seen that ties in with Blue's Clues seems thoughtful, educational and of high quality -- the same goes for this CD.
Adaptations are made to play out a Blue's Clues game as an audio exercise rather than visually, and this is done in a clever way. All of the original series' voices are used, including Steve Burns and Traci Paige Johnson for Steve and Blue. Many of the series' characters make an appearance: Slippery Soap, Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper, Tickety Tock, Mailbox, and Shovel & Pail, among others.
With 12 songs, the CD is relatively short, but not overly so -- a good length for young children. In addition, the CD has a detachable section that folds out to about 11" by 11" and shows the outside of Steve and Blue's house; seven stickers are included (Blue, Tickety, Slippery, Shovel, Pail, Mailbox and a snail) that can be placed and replaced on the glossy surface. A nice touch from a class outfit.
As usual, a high quality product from the Blue's Clues team.

John Cage abdicated his role as composer around 1950 to become a bystander as random sounds went by. Before that, he wrote some of the most fascinating music produced in America. Some of Cage's best early music was written for percussion ensembles. When the limited space at a dance performance forced him to become an inventor, he thought up a one-man percussion ensemble: the "prepared piano," a standard piano altered by clamping objects onto the strings. The music on this disc covers a wide range of moods and temperament, from the ghostly "Daughters of the Lonesome Isle" to the aggressive "And the Earth Shall Bear Again." Most of the pieces are imaginative enough to stand up to repeated listening. Boris Berman, a Russian-born pianist who now runs Yale's piano department, is better known for playing music like Scriabin and Prokofiev. But he seems completely in command of this radical idiom, with only a bit of rushing here and there keeping him from perfection. With its vivid sound and fascinating repertoire, this disc is another notable Naxos bargain. --Leslie Gerber

Thank You, Naxos!.......2006-01-20
The term "John Cage" seems to haunt my mind as long as I live. He certainly was one of the most controversial American composers during his days; he was the key figure to introduce "chance" and the "prepared piano" - by placing different small objects on the strings, the instrument produces various timbre, thus creating sort of a one-man percussion ensemble!
"4:33" is the first piece I knew by Cage, and I did listen to bits and pieces from radios and such, but I didn't have a single CD to own and have myself fully introduced to Cage's radical music. Plus, all this avant-garde albums are incredibly hard to find in high-profile Classical labels including Deustche Grammophon and Sony.
That's when I relied on Naxos, which currently holds one of the largest arrays of Classical music. And sure enough, I immediately bought what I needed; the first two Cage CDs released, performed by Russian pianist Boris Berman - the first one featuring "Sonatas and Interludes" for prepared piano, and this album. At a budget price, there is only little risk out of my wallet. So thank you, Naxos! Now I can listen to Cage's music wherever I can.
Of the two albums, I like this one better, because it features (except for the brief cycle "The Perilous Night") different separate pieces, each with distinct "preparations", moods, and colors the instrument can produce with all those objects inside. My favorite are "Tossed as it is Untroubled" and "Music for Marcel Duchamp", both with a foreign folk-like quality. I also like the extravagant "Mysterious Adventure" and the percussive "Primitive". Another particularly bizarre work is "Root of an Unfocus". There are some relatively calm pieces too, including "The Unavailable Memory of", "A Room", and "Prelude for Meditation".
A great CD for other people new with John Cage's music, but a good CD for Cage fans and experts too.
Uncaged.......2004-06-12
Try this album, patiently listening all the way through, and I think you will want immediately to play it again. Cranky music, perhaps, but absolutely fascinating. Cage was a grand experimenter, and here he even reconstructs a piano to achieve just the exact sonorities he wants, brilliantly played by Boris Berman. Haunting music, like nothing heard before. Acceptable performances of minor Cage.......2003-12-18
Following up on his recording of the complete Sonatas and Interludes, Boris Berman's second Cage disc for Naxos takes on a miscellany of music for prepared piano that gives a good overview of the composer's music for dance of the 1940s. The overall tone of the music is generally rhythmic and percussive rather than melodic; hence Cage's placing of objects on the piano strings to completely change the piano sound.
This disc contains three larger works and nine shorter ones. The Perilous Night is in six movements--the other works here are all in one movement--and explores a variety of sounds, rhythms and timbres. Daughters of the Lonesome Isle alternates between ghostly sound and vigorous dancelike rhythms, while Mysterious Adventure is a wide-ranging--if discursive--eight minute fantasy.
The shorter works tend even more towards vigorously rhythmic writing: Primitive, Totem Ancestor and And the Earth Shall Bear Again are near-orgiastic dances (I particularly like how, in the last of these pieces, Cage prepares the bass notes of the piano but leaves the treble untouched). In contrast, The Unavailable Memory of, Prelude for Meditation and Music for Marcel Duchamp are slow, meditative works, often monophonic. The rhythmic vagaries of Tossed as it is Untroubled, Root of an Unfocus and A Room add a little variety to the music, and probably come as close as any of these pieces to Cage's later style.
This is an interesting disc, and provides a strong foretaste of Minimalism, though an hour of largely similar works is a little much to take in one sitting. Berman's performances are acceptable, but nothing more: most of the works here have received superior readings on rival recordings by pianists such as Karis, Tan, Drury and Schleiermacher. Recommended to those on a budget, or for whom the collection is attractive.
Berman's Cage.......2001-05-08
My only complain comes from his choice of tempo for a piece such as "Music For Marcel Duchamp", which is the fastest i've ever heard (at 5'06 aprox)and lacks the mesmeric atmosphere that got me hooked on it the first time I listened to it.

Brazilian Master on Guitar returns with a Master on Flute.......2006-04-09
Great deal! Finally, Toninho Horta and flutist Nicola Stilo decided to record their live work, fortunately in a studio.
Here you'll find Mr. Horta as usual with his guitar and sensitive vocalise driven by his arranger's mind that makes all the difference.
Nicola Stilo was a surpise to me: a new flutist in my collection with brilliant conception in the same level as Horta's.
Repertoire mix 5 standards, jazz or not, with 5 compositions of their own. Coltrane's 'Naima', beautiful Bill Evans' 'Very Early' and Duke Ellington's 'In A Sentimental Mood' are the jazz standards. Also you'll find three Horta's classics here - 'Meu Canario' (aka 'Canario Vizinho Azul'), 'Bons Amigos' and 'Vento' - all with fresh and new approaches.
Beautiful guitar and flute duet.
dreamy guitar & flute.......2005-10-05
from website:
The guitar of Toninho Horta is always a treat, but on this 2005 album it's made even better by some lyrically light flute work from Nicola Stilo! The set's got a dreamy quality that really gets at the gentler sound of Horta's work on guitar -- and a few tunes even feature his vocals, singing in a laidback way that has echoes of the earlier bossa era, but a more gently jazzy approach overall. Stilo plays a variety of flutes on the set, and titles include a great version of Coltrane's "Naima", plus "Very Early", "Vento", "My Ideal", "In A Sentimental Mood", "Meu Canario", "Bons Amigos", and "Illusion".

Nice music by Donald Fraser moves this classic tale along, and it's all very much in keeping with the spirit of this delightful adventure story for children. Lovely performances open each chapter of the two-disc set, including such highlights as a rapturous oboe solo played by Alan Vogel to introduce Chapter Five, "The Mermaid's Lagoon." Chapter Seven, "Peter to the Rescue," is heralded by a particularly heroic score. The music is performed by Donald Fraser and the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra. The narrator is the distinguished British stage and television actor, Derek Jacobi, who's got the kind of voice that could make great poetry out of the copy on the back of a shampoo bottle. Words and music make a winning combination here. --Gwendolyn Freed

Beautiful.......2001-03-04
It was great to finally see a Peter Pan soundtrack that was all instrumental after searching for so long. The music is absolutely beautiful and just what I had been looking for. If you like classical music the songs are really pretty and easy listening. It was a shame that there aren't more tracks.

Brazilian Pop: NOT!.......2004-11-17
'Avant-garde art music' is the best definition for Orquestra Popular de Camara; so Brazilian music fans anticipating a traditional pop sound may be disappointed: pop it is not. While the classical influence is evident throughout, the avant-garde jazz influences are also prevalent - and just when you think there's no Brazilian pop influence, a surprising samba will creep in.
