4 out of 5 stars Transparent demands recognition.......2003-03-03

Its amazing how you can actually hear a band 'mature' between their freshman and sophomore releases. Transparent demands recognition as the definite contenda' among the power-hitters of the genre.

From the hard driving title-track to the laid-back, catchy pop of "Human After All", the entire album offers something for everyone. My particular favorites are Transparentare and are Shattered (hence, the sound clips), yet the introspective My Sometimes and Human After All break things up nicely and give you something to think about. The message throughout the album admits our weaknesses and calls out for God's touch.

Both the message and the music have stepped up to the next level from their previous self-titled. When you need a fix of great, guitar driven pop, grab a bit of Broomtree and give the volume some exercise.

5 out of 5 stars Great music, great lyrics, perfect for summer.......2002-06-19

Every year I rank my favorite CDs, and this was my #1 favorite of 2000. I liked Broomtree's debut (which ranked as one of my top three favorites of a year or so before), but this album is even better. The songs, the singing and playing, and the production are all improved over the thoroughly enjoyable debut.
This Columbus, Ohio band consists of male instrumentalists and a female singer whose singing radiates with lots of personality and cheerfulness. Musically, they remind me of The Go-Go's. I mourned the break-up of The Go-Go's back in the mid-1980s, but with Broomtree on the scene, who needs The Go-Go's? In fact, I did a song-to-song challenge, digging out The Go-Go's "Talk Show" album (Broomtree's sound is closest to this album), and found Broomtree's to be superior in vocal quality especially, but all around I like "Transparent" better than any Go-Go's album, as much as I like The Go-Go's!
Not only do I love Broomtree's energetic, cheerful music, but I love the lyrics too. These songs so perfectly express many of my sentiments. Many are personal conversations with God, no pretense, very open, honest, and relaxed yet while keeping in mind awe of God's holiness.
Great music, awesome lyrics, exuberant personality, this is one incredible album. I play it again and again every summer. (P.S. If you like Miss Angie's debut CD, you are sure to love this CD!)

4 out of 5 stars Their music is fast and fun..........2003-03-03

On the radio interview on track 4, the band state their original name as "Hard And Happy Chick Music", and I can't think of a better way to describe their sound. Their music is fast and fun, while providing a dynamic offering across the entire CD.

Tracks 1 and 4 are short vocal only pieces, with "Track 1" being a pastoral message over the buzz of an AM radio and a radio interview on track 4. The album has an excellent offering of guitar heavy, female-fronted pop... radio-friendly with an edge. The album doesn't throw any surprises, each track hitting the mark with an offering of driving guitars and the message of our own inadequacies and God's ever present grace. Forgotten changes tempo a bit, with some voice over samples from a speech (any ideas where from?), and Blue Skies ends things off nicely on a balled-esk note.

Overall, great top down on the Cabriolet material. No matter the weather out the window, this stuff makes the sun shine through the ears.

5 out of 5 stars a fan from the past.......2006-05-28

This is not just my favorite album from mildew, it is one of my favorites from the past 20 yrs since it was released. their music brings me back to a memorable time in my life during my college years in the late 80s/early 90s. i remember borrowing this album from a friend in '87 and mail ordering from their label texas hotel to get my own piece of vinyl. Everybody's Gone and The Kitchen are some of my favorite songs of all time that are on this album.

5 out of 5 stars a personal account.......2003-12-12

this music was made in California but it entered my life by force while i was living in the midwest at the end of the 1980s. it is not a summer record, even though guitarist/songwriter charlie baldanado is clearly a desciple of the beach boys pet sounds-era guitar tapestry. it's really beautiful stuff, the guitar work i mean, lots of lush 12-string accoustic through a roland stereo amp. the day after i saw them the first time, i lay in bed with jill at her house on 13th street in lincoln, kind of drifting in and out of sleep on a gusty, dark gray winter day and just listening to this record over and over. jenny homer's singing will slither through your dreams after you've heard it -- her every note seems charged, a velvety, longing sound -- i fell in love with it and her. she stood center stage, long brown hair, skirt, black knee socks -- a real beauty and she belts it out. anyway, BROOMTREE is one of the most important records in my collection. i feel lucky to have found such a beautiful soundtrack to a very intense time in my life, and whenever i listen to it, it brings me right back.
