Though three-fifths of this Texas band was formerly in Slobberbone, there isn't a speck of slobber amid the sonic sheen of the new incarnation's debut. Instead, frontman Brent Best now positions his sound at the high-gloss juncture of arena rock and power pop, with barely a nod toward the roadhouse dive. With Slobberbone's drummer Tony Harper and guitarist Jess Barr reuniting with Best, two new recruits--keyboardist Chad Stockslager and bassist Keith Killoren, both from Dallas's Budapest One--bolster the harmonies and the arrangements. While it's difficult to resist the hard-driving uplift of "Hummalong" and "Unhinged," the power balladry of "Holy Moses" and "Wonderous Life" (both approaching seven minutes) might have packed twice the punch with half the bloat. Elsewhere, the country tinge of "Fireflies" comes close to the Eagles, the elaborate production of "You Won't Forget" (with synthesized strings, cloying harmonies, and a brass arrangement) veers from Beatles into ELO territory, and "Des Moines" sounds like a generic lovelorn road song. In terms of aural precision, it's hard to fault the production of Matt Pierce, but the album almost begs for an editor. --Don McLeese

Customer Reviews:
Music that'll peel paint off the joint.......2007-05-11
The cover of this CD says it all. On it, a multitude of cool rock and roll instruments and equipment are just sitting in a studio, waiting to be plugged in so they can scorch some music-starved audience somewhere in the country. The aptly named "Jubilee Dive" is a great big sprawling -- but in-control -- hodge-podge of feel-good Saturday-night rockers and mellow fare like "You Won't Forget," "When You're Tired" and the achingly beautiful "Wonderous Life." Some of this stuff sounds a little like Wilco (see Summerteeth), and some of it like the Wallflowers (see Bringing Down the Horse), but truthfully, The Drams are probably better than both those bands combined. Written by singer and guitarist Brent Best, these sonic jewels are chock-full of moving and meaningful lyrics that lend the music serious poignancy.
Best and his band mates come off as road-weary but happy to be musicians; fun-loving but also old and wise enough to know better than to fall to the perils of touring; humble but also confident in what they're doing. Despite Best's leadership role in the band, there's a definite sense of musical chemistry, probably because two other Dram members played for years in Best's previous band, Slobberbone (Jess Bar on guitar and Tony Harper on drums). Best has a strong, slightly cracked voice, and in several tunes it sounds double-tracked a la Bob Mould (formerly of Husker Du and Sugar) for enhanced effect. Outstanding background vocals also infiltrate "Jubilee Dive," and the organ and piano work is stellar throughout.
"Truth Lies Low," the opening song on the CD, contains the best aspects of The Drams in 3 minutes, 36 seconds: astute lyrics about the fake glibness of today's politicians, great piano work and an overall catchy nature. "Hummalong," the following track, has the same formidable characteristics, and you can tell right away this is the type of music that will suck you in like a good party. "Unhinged," which I first heard thanks to an included CD in an issue of Paste magazine from 2006, takes the cake for the feel-good song of the decade. Whether you're looking for a lazy barroom ditty like "Holy Moses," sprightly guitar as on "Fireflies" or down-home riffs and wailing guitar solos that make their way on several songs, this down-to-earth album is as good as it gets.
The varied songs on "Jubilee Dive" have a slight gloss to them (especially when compared to Slobberbone's work), but they also possess a live feel that makes you want to stand up and sing along. One could easily imagine these tunes being played in a large, packed, sweaty bar, which is likely the type of atmosphere they are often played in. Like a good country singer, Best is capable of evoking feelings through his words, which often linger on the life of a touring band, both the stimulating and drab moments on the road. It all culminates to "Wonderous Life," one of the most beautiful tunes you'll ever hear. All in all, give The Drams an A+ for attitude, perspective and for great music.
Great Band! Great Debut CD!.......2007-02-20
The Drams are such a great band! You should also check out the band Slobberbone.
Top notch pop.......2007-01-23
It's hard to feel sorry for Slobberbone fans who are disappointed in this disc. To me, this feels like an evolution or progression from that band to a new and very exciting sound. True, you do have to give it a few listens for it to really sink in. But I found much to love here once I gave it time. I think the songs are beautifully crafted, layers of sound and great playing tied seamlessly to lyrics that're provocative and lovely. Addictive hooks, gorgeous melodies, excellent arrangements, good production (though I wish I could get in on vinyl). I love the way the songs on this album evoke an amazing range of other artists, from Elton John to the Beatles, without ever sounding derivative.
Would we all love Neil Young as much if he had stopped creatively with "After the Goldrush"? Artists need to move on, all you Slobberbone fans should too.
If you don't know about Slobberbone you'll probably like this CD.......2006-11-08
If you don't know about Slobberbone you'll probably like this CD. If you do know about Slobberbone, burry 'em in the back yard and move on to Lucero. While this CD is not as good as the Slobberbone stuff it doesn't deserve the bashing it's getting. It's obviously a new direction and not aimed at keeping Slobberbone alive. They would still be Slobberbone if that were the intent. It's still Brent writhing the songs and you can hear a hint of the old stuff on this record. The main problem is that now it's all happy and shiny. Brent decided to get his dog fixed after getting him back from the ex. Buy it used from one of the many disappointed Slobberbone fans.
While not Slobberbone, it's not a complete throwaway..........2006-11-02
I don't know how many people will pick this up who were not already familiar with Slobberbone. Accordingly, the majority of listeners/reviewers are going to compare this to Slobberbone. Compared to Slobberbone, it REALLY sucks. Taken on its own merits, it only kinda sucks. Personally, I have reached the point where I can appreciate the simple pop tunes (e.g. Hummalong, Unhinged, Sortsighted). However, half-way thru "You Won't Forget", I thought someone had replaced my Drams CD with a Chicago CD. Skip tracks 7 and 8, and you are left with a mediocre, listenable CD, if only due to the fact that I still enjoy Brent Best's voice (no matter how overproduced). Think of the drop-off from Slobberbone's ETYTWRWWT to Slippage. The drop-off from Slippage to this album is about twice as steep.
Bottom Line: Buy this CD, and make your own decision 'cause Brent Best deserves to be a millionaire based solely on what he did with Slobberbone.

What You Need To Know.......2007-05-11
Jimmy Buffett's debut album Down To Earth (1972) featured very strong writing and performances, with songs like "Truckstop Salvation," "Ellis Dee (He Ain't Free)," "The Christian?" and "Captain America." The follow-up album, High Cumberland Jubilee, featured some equally strong recordings, including "Livingston's Gone to Texas," "God Don't Own a Car," "Rockefeller Square," and "High Cumberland Jubilee/Comin' Down Slow."
* This release includes Jimmy Buffett's first two albums, plus two bonus tracks: "Richard Frost" (the B-side to his debut single) and the previously unreleased "High Cumberland Dilemma."
* Singer-songwriter Buzz Cason ("Everlasting Love," "Soldier of Love"), who continued to work with Buffett on his breakthrough albums for ABC Records, produced both albums.
* These two original albums are available together for the first time, and at a very special price.

Gotta love this one...it's The Cowboy Way!.......2004-02-04
Tasteful, newly recorded versions of songs that Riders' fans have been enjoying for the past quarter century. This double CD set is an honest-to-goodness national treasure! I love every track. The Riders have always sounded great on record and the addition of Joey Miskulin as producer and resident accordion genius adds a refreshing new dimension to the Riders' recent efforts. Purchasing "Silver Jubilee" is a no-brainer for all self respecting Riders fans, and would be a fantastic introduction for new listeners. Also, if you ever have a chance to see the group *live* ...don't miss them!! The Riders in the Sky are incredible musicians and hilarious performers.
western (cowboy) music at its best.......2003-11-17
Riders in the Sky rounded out their year long 25th anniversary by releasing a totally acoustic version of fan favorites. Even if you own any/all of their cds/records/cassettes, you need to buy this one. It is so clean sounding, you would swear you were sitting right next to them. There is bonus material, live performance material. 25 years is quite a bit of time, blazing new musical trails, rounding up new fans, fans who might have strayed away or should I say lured away by the glitz and glamour of today's pop sounding country. Run, don't walk, to your keyboard and order this one. Don't let it get away !

Ace-high selection of cowboy and Western tunes.......2004-10-07
Though the USA's continental frontier was settled nearly a century ago, the romance of the West lingers on in archetypes ranging from early settlers through modern-day cowboys. With Western films and TV classics having mostly exhausted their box-office gold, images of the West are now most often to be found in poetry and song. For many artists, like Wylie & The Wild West and the Sons of the San Joaquin, Western images and music are full-time musical pre-occupations, while for others, like Norman & Nancy Blake and Katy Moffatt, these themes are a thread in their tapestry of folk and country music.
This twenty track collection pulls together a variety of Western-themed pieces released on the Western Jubilee label, including throw-back harmony tunes, Western swing, cowboy poetry, and trail-dusted acoustic guitar folk (with and without Celtic and bluegrass flavorings). Highlights include the lush harmonies of the Sons of the San Joaquin, delicate guitar picking from Rich O'Brien, the poetic lyrics of Red Steagall and lyrical storytelling by Don Edwards and Norman Blake.
This is a great album of story and song, sure to be a favorite of both adults and children, and a perfect introduction to Western Jubilee's catalog.

The BEST Gershwin/Porter album.......2004-02-11
Perhaps I'm romanticizing, but this was THE cd I listened to in high school. The arrangements are absolutely captivating; building new material over the original themes while referencing them so purely. I couldn't imagine a better use of your money than purchasing this album, it will bring you years of joy!
Glowing Coles of Porter..........2004-01-15
I can only comment on the Porter half of this recording, as I own it on original vinyl. It's a mono copy, but you wouldn't know it. As usual, excellent engineering from Mercury, who set standards in the early 60's that still count (IMHO) as best practice.
Frederick Fennell is right at home in the warmth of these beautifully wrought Ray Wright orchestrations. As he should be; Wright's day job was orchestrating for Radio City Music Hall. The sound is lush, the dynamics amazing, the performance spot on. It gets four stars only because I can't justify five, not having heard the Gershwin half.
I suppose that if you can't find a nice copy to play on a good turntable with a warm amplifier, then this CD would do - but then, you miss the excitement of hearing sound you've been taught can only come from a CD, magically floating straight up from ancient vinyl.

Nashville or the Keys?...........2007-03-08
This is Buffett at his best...before he caught commercial success. Nice songwriting with a few small exceptions...almost has a country feel w/ pedal steel thrown in throughout, but still as that Buffett signature sound. He had something to prove still...like Springsteen on "The Wild and Innocent." This album, along with "Down To Earth" and all of Buffett's album's through "Changes in Lat./Changes in Att." are gems as far as I'm concerned...hell, I'd even say up to the Live album "You Had To Be There." This album will not disappoint.
Overlooked Gem.......2006-11-06
Jimmy's second album follows a similar style as his first, but overall is the better recording of the two. This is still pre-beach bum Buffett and many of the songs reflect a social / political consciousness that would fade away on his later (and more popular) recordings. Songs like "Rockefeller Square", "In The Shelter" and "Ace" all paint pictures of economic social situations that still ring true today. Some of Jimmy's best character studies are to be found here too with songs like "Death Valley Lives" and "Livingston's Gone To Texas". Another highlight is the country rock romp of "High Cumberland Jubilee / Coming Down Slow" medley that closes the album. Along with the good stuff there are some clunkers that sound very hippi-ish and dated. Songs like "The Hang Out Gang" and "God Don't Own A Car" probably went over really well in 1972, but have not aged very well. This album would prove to be the last to be recorded for independent label as Buffett would move on to MCA for his next release. It would also be his last album for many years to be recorded in Nashville which would reflect itself in the music to come.
Just as Good as Down to Earth.......2005-04-20
This album features more of Jimmy B before he discovered Boats, Beaches & Bars, well okay, he'd obviously discovered bars, but the boats & beaches would have to wait for his next album. On this one we are treated to more of the early folksinging style of a young man in transition, or rather a young man on the verge of a breakout to a breakaway career that since that third album "A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean" has gone nowhere but up.
JB has become larger than life, records selling in the bazillions. But for awhile back there, he was just like us, a mere mortal seeking his way. This album, good as it is, is a part of that quest and should be appreciated both for its outstanding lyrics as well as its place in documenting the beginning of an outstanding career. Thumbs up from me and if you give "High Cumberland Jubilee" a listen, I'm sure it'll be getting thumbs up from you as well.
Jack Priest, Sailor Home from the Sea
A glimpse at what could have been.......2002-01-14
It is quite easy for newcomers to buffett to think him a superficial stadium performer, these days you would be right. The tragic paradox is that JB had the potential to be a truly great artist, up there with Young or Dylan.
This record is living proof of this. If you want to truly hear the Buffett that could have been get High Cumberland Jubilee, A1A, Changes in Lattitudes .., a rare vinyl gem called "before the salt", which can be subsisted with "before the beach" and stop with, and including son of a son of a sailor. You will see the downward spiral. You can pick up Floridays (his best latter day effort IMHO), where JB sorta gets a glimps of what has been lost.
High Cumberland Jubilee is jimmy with a firm grip on his soul. It rocks, as hard as anything i have ever heard. No, there is very little electric distortion, but the whole thing is so tight, such raw energy, that it makes Metallica et al seem frivolous. To see what he could have been put the CD in, Turn up the volume to 11, and pump out Rockefeller Square.
This is a sad album because it shows even the finest talent can be sold for the dollar and an easy lifestyle. Sorry Jimmy, but truth is truth.
High Mark.......2001-01-12
High Cumberland Jubilee unfortunately was released on the tiny Barnaby label or else it could have been Jimmy Buffett's breakout. It contains some of his best songs, "In The Shelter" and "Livingston's Gone To Texas" were later revived and re-recorded on future albums, and great singing. "Ace" & "Rockefeller Square" are songs about odd-ball characters. "Death Valley Lives" is one of his all-time best songs and pops along like a car on the open road. "God Don't Own A Car" & "The Hang-Out Gang" are typical Jimmy Buffett wry look at life songs. The album fulfills the promise of his debut and is a great hidden gem.

This exuberant album-length debut (following a pair of EPs) showcases a young Los Angeles band that has roots in alt-country and an ear toward rock radio. Frontman Aaron Beavers frequently sounds like Counting Crows' Adam Duritz in his tremulous sincerity, while his material acknowledges the formative influence of Tom Petty (on "Petty Song") and channels some of the spirit of the early Eagles (on "So Happy"). Performances that range from the buoyant innocence of "Red Eyes" to the raw, garage-band urgency of "I Got You (Part 3)" support the band's reputation as a live powerhouse, with the somber balladry of the title track and the meditation on mortality in "Down" showing a more reflective side. As an ode to last call, "2 a.m." brings the album to a fitting, bar-band close. --Don McLeese

Awesome.......2005-08-05
I saw Shurman open for Ted Nugent at the Fillmore and they totally rocked the house. I met the guys after the show and they were so nice and down to earth. They really just love to play. Show some love to theses guys, they play their hearts out and this CD is well worth the money!
Good stuff..........2005-07-06
Not completely sure why 'ole boy was bashing Shurman in that other review - but I have a little bit of a different take on them. I wouldn't necessarily compare him to the artists he mentioned, especially his bizzarre comparison to Ryan Adams, but I would put them more on the lines of some older Great Divide stuff before they changed lead singers.
Odds are I wouldn't have bought this CD based on reviews, though. I saw them live in OKC last weekend and bought their disk there after hanging out with a couple guys from the band for a while. I then drove from OKC to Dallas to OKC to Houston the next couple days and listened to it for a huge portion of the time.
My favorite songs were probably 'I Got You' and 'Jubilee', but everything kept my foot tapping and kept me entertained - which is necessary when trekking back and forth across Texas and Oklahoma.
Good stuff... good stuff. Some pretty good guys, too.
Don't Go For the Hype.......2005-06-03
If the alt.country genre is going this way - count me out. This CD is filled with cliched lyrics, over production, unexciting playing and overall comes across as bland schlock. Think late 70's Poco. I've seen Shurman written up as the next Son Volt - how anyone would make the comparison is beyond me. Amazon tells you to also consider Ryan Adams - it's fitting because he's putting out the same kind of garbage now.
Go out and by a Richmond Fontaine or Drag the River disc.
best record of the year!!!!!.......2005-04-13
I just heard this CD and I must say I am BLOWN away!! Saw these guys with Los Lonely Boys and I was prayin they would sound as good on record and I must say I am pleasantly suprised. Best live band I've seen in a while and this is the record of the year!!! YEEEE HAAAAAW!!!!!

Refreshing.......2005-11-22
These guys are so talented. It's real music written from the heart with some real awesome melodies and harmonies. It's definitely like one of the previous reviewers stated, "A breath of fresh air." You won't be disappointed!
Like a breath of fresh air.......2003-10-28
This is quite possibly one of the most refreshing new CDs I've heard in a long time (too long for that matter). I first heard the Avett Bros back in September when they played on WNCW (the greatest radio station in Western NC, or anywhere for that matter). I just happened to tune in, and as soon as I heard them I knew I'd be getting this cd. Like others here, this cd has stayed in my cd player since I first popped the cd out of its case and into my player. How do you describe it? Well, it's a lot of things, but the shortest way is to call it good, energetic bluegrass mixed with incredibly catchy and soulful tunes that don't wear thin after countless listens in a row. These dudes have got it down, and I can't wait to see them in concert. I don't care what genre of music you say you like, yada yada yada...just check out this cd.
a "must have".......2003-09-11
This is one of the best new albums I have heard. I am not a huge bluegrass fan, but this is the kind of CD you put in and don't take out for weeks. Start to finish this is something so fresh, just about every song can stick in your head. My favorites are "Me and God" and "The Offering" A must have!!!!
Finally, something different!.......2003-09-02
I have CDs from every genre of music, and, no matter how much I love them when I first buy them, I always am tired of them within a few weeks. However, A Carolina Jubilee has remained my favorite ever since I bought the CD. I don't consider myself a real fan of bluegrass, but the Avett Bros. music is a such an awesome combination of catchy tunes and heartfelt lyrics that any music lover can appreciate it.
Album of the year!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-08-20
Take the Violent Femmes and mix it with some Old-Time, Foot Stomping Mountain music and you have a good idea what to expect with "A Carolina Jubilee"!!! Buy it!!
