As musical activists in the 1960s civil rights movement, the Staple Singers were powerful voices for equality and change. And more than 40 years after Pops's daughter Mavis spent a night in a West Memphis, Arkansas, jail at the behest of a racist cop, she still remembers the terror of the experience, as well as the counsel of Dr. Martin Luther King. That episode is at the centerpiece of "My Own Eyes," one of the most moving offerings on this collection of songs of racial struggle in the '50s and '60s, produced by guitarist Ry Cooder and featuring backing from the original Freedom Singers and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Throughout, the album proves both emotionally chilling and spiritually uplifting. On J.B. Lenoir's "Down in Mississippi" and Marshall Jones's "In the Mississippi River," for example, Cooder makes fine use of pounding percussion and snaky electric guitar to capture the danger and fear inherent in the Deep South at the time, while the title song and "Jesus Is on the Main Line" draw on gospel and the traditional framework of church hymns to promise positive solutions. Staples, who adlibs on several cuts, connecting the injustice of yesterday to the continuing marginalization of blacks in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, remains a remarkable performer, employing a throaty sensuality that rises from a deep well of tremulous emotion. If her album is musically uneven at times, her artistry and strength continue to shine as undimmed beacons. --Alanna Nash

Album Description
From the liner notes, by John Lewis:
When I listen to this music, it takes me back. It takes me back to the red clay hills of Georgia, to the Black Belt of Alabama, and the Delta of Mississippi. It takes me back to the moans and groans and pains of an oppressed people yearning for freedom. It takes me back to the time when hundreds and thousands of us decided we were "sick and tired of being sick and tired," as Fannie Lou Hamer said. It takes me back to the days when ordinary people inspired by a dream decided to quench our hunger and thirst for justice in the fountains of mercy and love.
Back then, some people thought legalized segregation in America would never come to an end. But those of us in the Civil Rights Movement were inspired by a higher calling. And even if it cost us our very lives, "we weren't gone to let nobody turn us `round". We believed that the action of peace, the way of non-violence, and the power of love could overcome our oppression and remind our oppressors of their own humanity. Through the power of this faith our nation witnessed a non-violent revolution of values, a revolution of ideas that changed America forever.
The music you are listening to right now was the soul of that revolution. It was this music that gave us hope when it seemed like all hope was gone. It was the heartbeat of this music and its steady, reassuring message that bound us together as one solid force. So when we were beaten, arrested and jailed; when we stood together on picket lines or marched through the streets of the Deep South; when we faced the guns drawn, the billy clubs and the bullwhips raised; when we were teargassed, trampled by horses, or scattered by fire hoses, it was these songs that lifted us and pushed us to a higher place.
It is my hope that when you hear Mavis Staples, when you hear the Freedom Singers, and the other artists on this CD, that you too will be inspired. I hope this music will help you find the courage to stand up, speak up, and speak out and answer the call of your own conscience. It is my hope that this music will help you see what ordinary people with extraordinary vision can do when they decide they will never turn back.
Rep. John Lewis
Customer Reviews:
We'll never turn back.......2007-07-05
I enjoyed this cd very much. I had listened to the Staples singers years ago and was glad to see Mavis recording again.
Mavis Staples rules.......2007-06-28
This is one fantastic recording. Mavis has a magnificent voice . . . perfect for the songs and full of depth and determination. The musicians notably ry cooder and back up singers are up to the task as well. Mavis let her light shine brightly!!
quafable but not transcendent.......2007-06-27
This is a solid album, similar in tone to the recent retreads by the Blind Boys of Alabama and John Hammond. The historical and emotional baggage it carries help one to listen with a sympathetic ear, and perhaps lend it more pathos than is earned strictly on aesthetic merits.
Yes and no.......2007-06-27
A tribute to the legacy of the Civil Rights movement and the Staple Singers themselves. Doesn't really live up to the hype, though. Mavis has still got the drive and passion, but her voice doesn't have the range and nuance.
Passion and soul.......2007-06-26
Mavis Staples sings with passion and true soul the songs of the Civil Rights movement on "We'll Never Turn Back". The CD has all the sounds of a great Ry Cooder CD too because he did arrangements of many of the songs and he plays on them too. This CD's version of "This Little Light of Mine" shows what can be done respectfully to bring a whole new sound to an old song. This CD really deserves 5 stars.

AWESOME!.......2007-07-10
If you enjoy gospel music -- YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET! Elvis' incredible voice is perfect for the soulful lyrics. Plus he picks up the tempo on many of them making them sound more like rock. All of my favorites are on this 3CD set - so I'm very very happy that I bought it. I highly recommend it!
This CD is great!.......2007-07-07
Elvis sings gospel songs like no other! Some of the songs are a litte rough but you have to realize some songs were recorded in his home or at the studio while he is just playing around. The first disc is more of the released songs while some of the songs on the other CD's are live versions or unreleased versions with him laughing and talking. I thoroughly love this set!
Great gospel album!.......2007-07-05
I have always thought that Elvis' voice was never better than when he was singing gospel and this album proves it! Well done remastering, clear, very good sound. Absolutely a must for people who love gospel and Elvis!!

Colorblind isn't an adequate title for this album. Randolph's follow-up to 2003's Grammy-nominated Unclassified is bright and energetic as a tie-dye-patterned pinwheel. Mostly its 11 tunes are about grooves plucked from the era of Sly Stone and Stevie Wonder, dappled with brilliant classic rock musicianship (think Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck) and driven by frenetic verve. When things slow down, it's usually to let the young pedal steel virtuoso revisit his roots in the Holiness Church, although the team of pop-world songwriters he collaborates with make the lyrics of Randolph's R&B hymns ambiguous between devotion to a woman or to God. Guests Dave Matthews (singing backup on "Love Is the Only Way") and Eric Clapton (lending second guitar to a hot-but-rote cover of the Doobie Brothers' hit "Jesus Is Just Alright") are oddly subdued, but neo-soul diva Leela James puts sex and smolder into her duet with Randolph on "Stronger." Ultimately, though, this album's all about Randolph himself, who has loosened his grip on the blues and gospel bedrock of his earlier playing to become a master of flashy funk and rock riffs and the owner of a tone so gargantuan it's earned him a place in rock-guitar Olympus--if not Heaven. --Ted Drozdowski
Album Description
On Colorblind, the third album from Robert Randolph & The Family Band, Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews, and Leela James join for a jam-packed, emotion-filled, good-time party mix of funk, soul, rock, gospel, and blues.
Customer Reviews:
A little disappointed.......2007-06-27
I was trying something new and this album was recommended. It has some good hits on it but I guess it just wasn't what I was looking for, which was more of a Jimmy feel. I'll try it again in a month and see how it does me.
Funk, Soul, Rock, Gospel, Blues Collusion of the Best Kind.......2007-06-03
My wife is seriously into funk, soul, rock and blues! Her other criteria for picking music is the guitar player has to be awesome. When I heard this CD it was like "yep, all of the criteria have been met". She's going to love it.
She did and so did I. You know that an artist is on the right track when legends like Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews, and Leela James want to join in.
Buy this CD. There are many standout songs that will surely get airplay. My personal favorites are Deliver Me, Thrill of It, Love is the Only Way In, and Thankful 'N Thoughtful.
Play it at "eleven".......2007-05-21
Colorblind is a slightly more commercialized follow-up to their previous efforts that is well worth the listen. I was recently "turned on" to Robert Randolph with their Wetlands album and was immediately hooked. I eagerly bought this album and was not dissappointed. As some of the critics have pointed out, it is a little more commercial, has some "big names" added, and has an unnecessary cover of the Doobies "Jesus is Just Alright" (it isn't bad, but I would prefer another original.) Seems like the band is trying to breakthrough to a broader audience (can you really blame them?). The stand out songs are "Thrill of it," "Ain't nothing wrong with it," and "Deliver Me,"--all are rockers with a great driving beat and guitar work.
The sound is still solid, and I can imagine several of these songs becoming concert staples and jammable hits. Some of the southern rock sound which was so much of Wetlands is lost and is replaced with more of a funk/r & b sound, but it works.
After listening to it a few times, you will definitely find yourself turing it up to "eleven."
Great fun & funk.......2007-05-20
A little bit Sly and the Family Stone, a little bit Red Hot Chili Peppers, a little bit Mother's Finest, and a little bit Lenny Kravitz. Fun, bouncy, funky. Feel-good energy music.
The Steel Pedal Master Outdoes Himself!.......2007-05-16
Robert Randolph hit a home run with "Unclassified" but this one is a grand slam! The rock/funk/blues grooves are still there and this time he has really polished up on his songwriting! He is still deep and spiritual yet doesn't mind having a little fun once in a while. I usally don't care for remakes but his cover of the Doobie Brothers' "Jesus Is Just Allright" isn't bad at all! I also thank God that he chose to do a duet with a real soul sista like Leela James on the track "Stronger" rather than just another rapper like so many others do. If you enjoyed "Unclassified" this one will not disappoint!

Album Description
Revised with 2 significant tracks and artwork not previously included. When Elvis was growing up, the Presley family attended the First Assembly Of God church in Tupelo and subsequently in Memphis. Elvis's music was greatly influenced by attending these churches, but reglious music came to Elvis in many shapes and forms. Religious songs were often part of the repertoire for country stars on the Grand Ol' Opry - a syndicated radio Nashville broadcast that the Presley's almost always tuned into on Saturdays. As a teen, Elvis and his friends would sneak into churches in the black neighborhoods to catch the lively music of a different musical heritage. The welcoming congregation and uplifting sound opened up Elvis's understanding of the multiple facets of reglious music. ULTIMATE GOSPEL provides testament to Elvis's musical excellence and acknowledges the priceless contribution of the talented songwriters, musicians and producers involved.
Customer Reviews:
ELVIS: ULTIMATE GOSPEL.......2007-05-12
This is the real Elvis. It shows Elvis's true roots. I recommend this cd to anyone who wants to discover the real heritage Elvis left behind.
His BEST single CD Gospel collection!.......2007-03-08
Very powerful performances and of course Elvis' voice is unmatched. He was made to sing Gospel and he puts his heart into every performance. The only Grammies he won were for his Gospel recordings. I know there are many Elvis Gospel collections available, but this one is his best single CD Gospel collection! To top this one you would have to get the 2 CD "Amazing Grace" or the 3 CD "Peace in the Valley" set.
This release is slightly different than the original "Elvis Ultimate Gospel" CD released a few years ago. On this version they added two songs "In My Father's House" and "An Evening Prayer" and deleted "Miracle Of The Rosary". I guess you could say this is the Protestant version of "Elvis Ultimate Gospel". If you like Gospel music and don't want to spend a lot of money on multi-CD releases, I highly recommend this CD.

Gospel music at its best.......2007-05-13
I have never heard the Lord's praises sung more beautifully. Highly recommended collection. The live version of "How Great Thou Art" from 'Elvis In Concert' is a powerful take on the recorded version.
I was singing bass, but he covered me up. He wiped me out........2007-01-26
Did you know that Elvis Presley's four Grammy nominations (and two wins) for "Best Sacred or Inspirational Performance" were his ONLY Grammy nominations? Yes, it's true. Elvis' gospel recordings are among his most heartfelt performances. This two CD collection features all the songs from the Peace in the Valley EP, the His Hand in Mind LP, the How Great Thou Art LP, the He Touched Me album and most of his other gospel recordings; including a previously unreleased jam session between Elvis and the Stamps, which was filmed for the documentary Elvis On Tour. Great stuff, but I would recommend getting the three CD collection called Peace in the Valley: The Complete Gospel Recordings. That collection has everything from this collection, plus: the gospel songs from the Million Dollar Quartet jam session, several home recordings, four songs from Elvis movies, "Peace in the Valley" live on the Ed Sullivan Show, "Who Am I?", "Life", "I Got a Feelin' in My Body", two songs from Las Vegas rehearsals, the live version of "Help Me", the "Gospel Medley" from the 1968 Comeback Special, an off-the-cuff performance of "The Lord's Prayer" and the live version of "How Great Thou Art" from the Elvis in Concert television special. Whew! But if you don't want those songs, this collection will be good enough for you.
AMAZING GRACE: ELVIS SACRED PERFORMANCES.......2007-01-09
I loved all of Elvis's music; however, this is the most moving music I HAVE EVER HEARD. When he sings How Great Thou Art -- there isn't any artist that could come close to performing the song as he does. He is magnificient.
Amazing Grace.......2007-01-05
I didn't know whether I'd like "religious music" by Elvis, I'd only heard his movie tunes & of course the songs we all know - Hound Dog, etc. I bought this while persuing my personal religious journey, I like Elvis, figured this would be okay to get inspired with. Whoah!!! Elvis usually takes a song makes it his own, sometimes you don't recognize it. He doesn't do that with sacred music. What he does do is enter the Kingdom through song. He sings with intensity, longing & you do not doubt his own religious conviction. I especially love the gospel tunes of his southern upbringing. My favorite songs are Milky White Way & Lead Me, Guide Me. This is a lot of music on 2 cd's, well worth the money.

After making their mark in the early '60s with gospel, folk, and social-protest songs, the Staples joined the Stax label in 1968. These 16 cuts find the Staples straddling the sacred and secular worlds, offering positive-message songs that aren't explicitly religious. Backed by the rock-solid grooves of Stax's urgent soul, the Staples produce a series of buoyant, infectious numbers. With Mavis's gritty, emotionally charged lead vocals in command, they roll through horn-driven celebrations such as "I'll Take You There" and "We'll Get Over" plus superb covers of "Dock of the Bay" and "The Weight." Pops's warm lead vocals grace earthy self-affirmations including "Respect Yourself" and "Be What You Are." These "secular spirituals" deftly combine socially conscious lyrics with joyous melodies. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
The Staple Singers will take you there!.......2007-01-26
There's something about music that touches the soul and this cd does that and more. It takes you back before rap and disco to the time when a simple groove was just fine. A must for any cd collection.
The Best of the Staple Singers .......2006-08-29
Gospel at its Best...Soul at its Best...Encouragement at its Best...
munchenlied.......2006-02-23
Truly wonderful material...pre-protest...pre-rap...careful, you might find yourself singing along while experiencing a near uncontrollable urge to boogie...!
Soulful gospel.......2005-07-17
There are several numbers that don't really distinguish themselves, but the many that hit, hit hard. "I'll Take You There" belongs on a short list of the best songs ever recorded. Another titanic achievement is "If You're Ready (Come Go with Me)." There are also fine covers of "The Weight" and "(Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay." The rest of the disc consists of fine songs well performed but fails to reach those heights.
Truly Spiritual Music.......2004-07-27
In their writing, singing, playing and production, these tracks epitomize love, positivity and soul and simply ooze with groove. The family's harmonies will give you chills, their message will give you hope, and the legendary Muscle Shoals rhythm section could bring new life to the rhytmically dead.
If you buy this CD it will be one of the funkiest and most uplifting in your collection - The Staple Singers will truly Take You There.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Long known as the Five Blind Boys of Alabama, this venerable gospel institution has seen its ranks fluctuate in recent years. Rarely, however, have the soul-stirring harmonies of the group, recording here as a quartet, benefited from such stellar support. Producer John Chelew (best known for John Hiatt's breakthrough Bring the Family) has enlisted guitarists David Lindley and John Hammond, bassist Danny Thompson, drummer Michael Jerome, and harmonica ace Charlie Musselwhite for a set that celebrates the bluesy underpinnings of gospel.
The selection of material mixes the traditional spirituals the group has been performing for more than a half century ("Nobody's Fault but Mine," "Motherless Child") with soulful readings from the more contemporary songbooks of Tom Waits, the Rolling Stones, and Ben Harper. Harper's "Give a Man a Home" receives a majestic vocal from Clarence Fountain, while the album's most audacious cut pairs the lyrics to "Amazing Grace" with the melody from "House of the Rising Sun." --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic album.......2007-06-13
They just have amazing voices. There are two Tom Waits songs on the album; and while i'm a big fan of Tom Waits, sometimes it's hard to hear how to sing his songs yourself. The Boys bring out their musicality in a way that's accessible for everyone - i can sing those songs in the shower now! ;) Great album!
Blind Boys are Great!.......2007-01-11
I was not really familiar with the Blind Boys until I purchased this CD. I love their old-time blue-zy style and plan to purchase more of their music.
You don't have to be a big gospel fan to enjoy this.......2006-02-11
The Blind Boys reach out here to broaden their base beyond the traditional gospel fan. They start out by covering material by the Rolling Stones (I just wanna see his face from Exile On Main Street), Tom Waits, and others. They add some mainstraem guest stars to further broaden the appeal. There's blues, rock, soul here all blended together expertly.
This won a number of awards and deservedly so. I'm sure there's many people who didn't realize that they can enjoy gospel music until they listened to this.
You'll fall in love with the Blind Boys after listening to this CD.......2005-09-23
If you weren't already in love with the Blind Boys, you will fall in love with them and their music after listening to this CD.
Prior to hearing this, I wasn't a gospel fan, and wasn't really sure what my reaction would be. Since I bought this CD I have purchased about five others by the Blind Boys - and while they're all superb, this one is my favorite.
It's hard to pick favorite songs on this CD, although, "Run on for a Long Time," "Soldier," and "The Last Time" are a few. You'll find a lot of variety here, from uptempo tracks to more solemn and slow songs.
You might also recognize "Way Down in the Hole" as the opening track from HBO's series "The Wire."
Having toured with Elvis Costello, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Peter Gabriel, the Blind Boys have earned their place in mainstream music culture, but maintain the traditional sounds that appeal to audiences around the world.
Unbelievable.......2004-11-15
I saw the Blind Boys of Alabama for the first time on Austin City Limits, singing "Amazing Grace." I remember being completely drawn in at the harmony and the rendition, as it sounded almost like a chain gang. The beginning cadence sounds a bit like "The House of the Rising Sun," but you forget about that once the vocals start in. The rest of the CD is equally moving. I've read other reviews claiming goosebumbs, tears, etc. -- my sentiments exactly. Bravo.
I heard a new song of their's (equally fabulous) on the radio a few days ago but suppose the CD has not yet been released -- I'm waiting!

Country music reclaimed its traditional soul with the chart-topping triumph of the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack. This concert sequel, recorded (and filmed) at Nashville's venerable Ryman Auditorium, reunites Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, Alison Krauss and Union Station, and other O Brother standouts. With little duplication, the selection extends the movie's revival of acoustic spirituals and Appalachian balladry, though the performances and pacing of the concert aren't quite as consistently compelling as the studio soundtrack. Among the highlights are a pair of originals by Welch and David Rawlings, the bluesy "Dear Someone" and the Everlyesque "I Want to Sing That Rock and Roll." Where O Brother interspersed archival recordings among the contemporary artistry, the concert finds Nashville gospel's Fairfield Four harmonizing on the chain-gang chant of "Po' Lazarus," while the late John Hartford (in one of his final performances) renews the deadpan whimsy of "Big Rock Candy Mountain." --Don McLeese

Good music.......2007-05-15
Good music but not as good as "Oh Brother Where are Thou".
Worth the money.
reasonable good CD.......2006-07-26
This CD was ok. I enjoyed the actual "Brother, Where Art Thou" soundtrack better. If you are really into these particular artists, you should enjoy this.
I'm a Dapper Dan Man! .......2006-05-01
I can't express how much I love this movie, soundtrack and documentary. It's a classic in every sense of the word. The movie is hilarious, the music superb and it makes me reminesse (pardon my spelling)about all those times my parents forced me to watch Hee Haw as a child. It's just the PERFECT movie.
Check this out .........2004-01-29
This is a cool movie no doubt.
I would have rated it higher -- had I not known that some artists in the movie have never been paid for their performance in it -- hundred of thousands of copies sold -- but zilch has been paid to at least one artist that I personally know.
THey were giving this away on PBS -- to those making a donation --he (artist I know of)is ALL over this movie -- but he has yet to be compensated or recognized by the movie producers.
Just try it, it is addicting........2003-10-09
I never thought I was a fan of this kind of music till the "Oh Brother" movie, but this "Down from the Mountain" performance has added to my new love. The DVD or VCR of this is also a must see, where it was good to get to visit John Hartford one more time. I really enjoyed the backstage, inside glimpse at the performers on the DVD. Every single song on the CD is a good addition to the over-all pleasant experience, and I suggest you buy this CD if you are a true lover of good music, no matter what type of music you prefer.

This double-disc reissue documents one of the more curious careers in country music. Both 1978's White Mansions and 1980's The Legend of Jesse James are Southern song cycles that were conceived by Britain's Paul Kennerley, then an unknown songwriter who somehow recruited a high-profile cast for each. A Civil War saga from the Southern perspective, White Mansions suffers from caricature and cliché but benefits from signature contributions by Waylon Jennings, Jessi Colter, and Eric Clapton. Jesse James has more focus and narrative momentum, with Levon Helm, Johnny Cash, and Emmylou Harris in lead roles. Though the albums are more noteworthy for artistic ambition than memorable material, Kennerley subsequently became a successful Nashville songwriter and Harris's husband from 1985 to 1993. --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
Legend of Jesse James.......2007-05-13
I had heard of this album in 1981 or so. Although I have the LP I wanted the
CD also. I really like the story telling aspect of this cd. Starting with the
first tract completely through the last. Also, the caliber of the singers
included really pleased me. Charlie Daniels, Johnny Cash and Levon Helm's
voices are so well suited for the characters that they portray. It also made
me interested enough to do a little history reading on the real Jesse James.
History would be a lot more interesting to people, I think, if more were
presented in such a well done way.
A Gem.......2007-04-11
My husband bought the LP years ago and pretty much wore it out. When I bought this CD for him as a gift he was thrilled to hear elements of the recordings he says he never heard on the LP. We are both very happy with this CD and have told many of our friends and relatives who are interested in the history of the US during the civil war and post civil war period. I wish they would make a video of this even if they have to recast the parts with contemporary singers to replace those who have left this planet.
Two Magnificent and Historically Accurate Song Cycles About the American South.......2006-09-01
I accidentally ran into the cassette version of "The Story of Jesse James" probably shortly after the cassette was released. My 35 year old daughter remembers well hearing it played over and over again, when she was a child. Naturally, the tape finally wore out and I had no idea where to find another copy. I felt an unbelievable sense of loss because of this for many years, until I recently decided to search "Jesse" on Amazon.com, hoping to find that it had been re-released as a CD.
When I found that "White Mansions", which I had never even heard of before, had been combined into a double CD set with "Jesse", I was ecstatic and I immediately ordered two copies of the set, one for my car and one for my house. I found that I had to immerse myself in hearing "Jesse", until my "thirst" for it had been satisfied, before I could bring myself to listen seriously to "White Mansions". However, the Civil War/the War Between the States/the War of Northern Aggression/the Late Unpleasantness, as it is variously called, has always extremely interested me and filled me with great sadness, especially since most people today do not understand the complexities of the war, its many heart-breaking aspects, and how lasting its influence has been on our country.
These song cycles are replete with superb music and equally superb singers whose voices fit the characters who tell the story of the Civil War from the Southern white point of view in "White Mansions" and the story of Jesse James and the James-Younger Gang in "The Story of Jesse James". These song cycles are most highly recommended by me, however, not only because of their superb music and vocalists, but also because they are historically so accurate. I am a history buff and I know Civil War history and the lives and activities of the James brothers and the Younger brothers very well. My only bone to pick with the cycles is the song "High Walls" on "Jesse". Although I enjoy the song greatly, I personally do not believe that Jesse James ever was so self-pitying, although he probably did regret the path that he had chosen, after he had matured and had become a loving husband and father who had decided to settle down on a farm with his family.
I most highly recommend this set to anyone who appreciates the best in country music, to anyone who is interested in the Civil War, especially those who are interested in the different points of view of its Southern caucasian socio-economic groups, and/or to those who are interested in the war's resulting production of some of our nation's most notorious outlaws. I am now also so emotionally involved in "White Mansions", as well as in "Jesse", that today, I literally burst out with a loud exclamation concerning what had just been sung in one of its songs, while I was driving my car, startling my friend who was riding with me and embarrassing myself!
A secret treasure!.......2006-02-17
I bought "The legend of Jesse James" vinyl LP in 1980 when I was 17 and was immediately struck by the solid writing, emotional narrative and excellent musicianship found on this concept album. I remember "One more shot" got some airplay on country radio stations at the time, but without the rest of the album to provide the appropriate context, the single didn't have much impact. One listen to the entire album, and it's hard not to be impressed by this collection of country/folk/rock jewels.
This 2-CD set was my first introduction to "White Mansions", Paul Kennerley's original Southern Americana musical history lesson. This album is as well produced and the song writing as strong as on "Jesse James". However, this collection is not as emotionally engaging as the tracks on "Jesse James". The performances are all first rate and Waylon Jennings' vocals on this album are perhaps his best ever and proves that he was at his peak in the late 1970s!
Anyone that listens to this compilation of two great country concept albums will become instant fans. I sincerely hope more people will find this secret treasure.
The CD to save if your house was on fire!.......2005-12-04
White Mansions and especially The Legend of Jesse James gives me chills when I listen to it. I grew up in Clay County,Missouri right up the road from the James Farm. This music is so authentic in the style and the way the voices sound as if they are truly Missouri locals. Anybody who knows the true outlaw story of the James Boys knows this cd is so dead on it will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. Jesse James is not just a train robber but a true southern farmer turned guerilla who just wanted his money back from the Yankee Feds. This CD has the best I believe of Waylon & Jessi, Johnny Cash and Levon Helm singing in a southern rock style that will have you swilling sweetea out of a mason jar. If you like hog callers and mules, tobacco and whiskey culture and realize the Civil War really started on the southern Frontier in Missouri, buy this you will play it for years!!!

Originally released as a double LP in 1972, Amazing Grace cracked the Billboard Top Ten upon its release, making it one of the bestselling gospel records of all time. Grace was recorded in a large Baptist church with an ultraenthusiastic, loving audience in the pews and a full, funky, band as well as the Southern California Community Choir under the direction of her mentor Rev. James Cleveland. Her voice is melismatic and intensely emotional, yet pure and controlled--as if she were directly channeling the Holy Ghost. Aretha's father, the brilliant preacher Rev. C.L. Franklin, makes a brief, proud appearance, remarking how "she has never left the church!" Highlights include the beautiful "Wholy Holy," an 11-minute, heart-stopping "Amazing Grace," and Inez Andrews's stirring song "Mary, Don't You Weep." Way more than a return-to-the-roots record, the set is an inspired gospel-soul workout that arguably showcases Aretha's strongest singing ever. --Mike McGonigal
Customer Reviews:
Aretha's Gospel 70s.......2007-03-08
Since the 70s, when I first heard gospel songs by Aretha, I have been captivated by them. It saddens me that the worldly songs were more attractive to her, then God's songs. Nevertheless, it was her gospel songs which propelled me into appreciating God more, and loving songs of praises rendered to Him. I was shocked to learn that these old songs were still around. When I listen to her gospel songs, they take me back to a time (the 70s) which I love and still cherish today. If anyone reads this, let me know where to find another gosple song of hers entitled "The Rapture."

This Christmas I gifted three friends with copies of Amazing Grace - - - A youthful , soleful Aretha - with James Cleveland and the Southern California Community Choir - - - - It's a great way to start a Sunday morning - -
If you're gonna yell, this is how to do it........2006-05-20
Much of the "music" in this genre leaves me flat. I can watch people work themselves into a frenzy over out-of-tune yellin' and screamin', and wonder what the attraction is, or whether folks are just responding out of conditioning, or because it's "gospel."
But when Aretha raises her voice to the highest, it's the real thing. Exuberance and ecstasy on time and in tune. Now that's heaven. She was one of a kind in those days, and there is no better example of it than on this set.
The greatest gospel album of all times!!!!!!.......2005-12-03
Aretha clearly peed on herself as she blew the roof off of the church. All young vocalists must have this CD to know what the best singer in the world sounded like at a younger age. Aretha is still the greatest singer alive! I just remember needing to see actual footage of this concert to believe that a person could actually sing like this. It was just too amazing for me to belive that someone could really do this "live." I recently saw Aretha in NY 07/05'at the McDonalds Gospel fest, and she blew the roof off the place.
God really favored and gifted her with the finest vocal instrument in the world in my opinion. Ray Charles once said "no one in the world can sing like Aretha,...my one and only sister!" There will never be another Aretha, nor will there be another album like this. Long live the Queen!!!!
One Of the Best Gospel Albums Ever Recored.......2005-10-14
Words cant express how good you feel in the Lord after you have heard this CD.
I was a little girl in 1972 but I remember my mom playing the album over and over again..When I saw it on CD the first time... I had to have it.
