Best version of King and I.......2004-07-26
This 1977 version really tells you what this show is made of!!! Yul Brynner is in prime form with A Puzzlement (finally being recorded with the full score), and Constance Towers makes a fine Anna Lenowans. The added dialouge tracks add a special personality to the CD, and help the listener who may have never seen the show to understand it. The 1956 soundtrack (remastered) is okay compared to this, and the 1951 Decca Broadway album is deplorable compared to this. Only version you will ever need. Highly Reccomended!!!!!!!!!
CD by which all other KING AND I discs are measured.......2004-02-17
By the time RCA recorded this album of the 1977 revival of THE KING AND I the show had been playing on Broadway for six months and the cast had settled happily into their roles. The result is a vividly theatrical recordng that, except for the "Small House of Uncle Thomas" ballet, contains the entire musical score.
I would like to correct reviewer Arne Anderson: Brynner was not dying from cancer when this production played. He returned to Broadway with the show again in 1985 just six months before his death and by that time, yes, he voice was showing noticable deterioration. But when this production played the Uris theatre in 1977 and 78 he was in fine voice. True, it is not the youthful voice heard on the original 1951 cast album but with the years come many more layers to the performance.
It also helps that several dialogue moments such as the King's soliloquy "So Big a World" are included on this record. The dialogue also plays an important part in the way Thomas Z. Shepard has laid out the record. For example, the famous "Shall We Dance" sequence. On this recording, the whole scene is prsented and suddenly what on other KING AND I cd's is just another great R & H song, is a dramatic highlight. Also, the Cd closes with a recording of the entire final scene. It is incredibly moving.
Constance Towers sounds properly mature as Mrs Anna, and all the secondary roles have been thoghtfully cast by wonderful singer/actors. Bear in mind, Richard Rodgers was still alive when this production and recording were made and was at the recording sessions. In fact, it would be the final cast recording of one of his shows he would supervise. This guarantees it is an authenic recording.
The package includes good background notes and a fully detailed synopsis of the show.
This album was recorded Monday October 31, 1977. On Tuesday November 1, 1977 I attended the performance at the Uris theatre. It was my first Broadway show. So, for me, this album holds extra special memories.
good revival recording; Constance Towers is lovely.......2003-10-12
This cast album to the acclaimed 1977 Broadway revival of THE KING AND I is a must-own for all fans of the beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. Yul Brynner again heads the cast as the imperious King, with Constance Towers as Mrs Anna and June Angela as Tuptim.
Yul Brynner asked his good friend Yuriko (the original Eliza in the "Uncle Tom's Cabin" ballet in the 1951 Broadway production and later the film version) to direct this production and also recreate Jerome Robbins' choreography for the ballet. Yuriko perfectly reproduced all this and more with this sumptuous revival, which embarked on an extensive touring season following it's Broadway engagement, before coming back to New York in 1985, the year that Brynner succumbed to cancer.
Constance Towers is quite lovely in the role of Mrs Anna, offering up glowing renditions of "I Whistle a Happy Tune", "Getting to Know You", "Hello Young Lovers" and "Shall I Tell You What I Think of You?".
June Angela, apparently the youngest actress to play Tuptim in a major revival, lets her gorgeous soprano loose with her breathtaking "My Lord and Master" as well as her duets with the Lun Tha of Martin Vidnovic (OKLAHOMA!) in "I Have Dreamed" and "We Kiss in a Shadow".
Hye-Young Choi is a lovely Lady Thiang, singing a heartbreaking "Something Wonderful". The rest of the cast is superb.
All-in-all, an essential cast album of THE KING AND I, and one you will really adore.
Required listening!.......2000-06-16
The 2 love duets between Martin Vidnovic and June Angela are worth the price of admission in themselves, plus you get the complete score including "I Have Dreamed", which for some unbelievable reason was cut from the film.
A MUST FOR ALL 'KING AND I' FANS.......2000-02-10
BRILLIANT! A MUST for all 'King and I' fans. It has ALMOST ALL the 'King and I' songs, except for 'The Royal Dancing Wives' Dance' and 'Uncle Tom's Cabin - The Ballet'. However, the voices are more 'opera-based', especially June Angela and Constance Towers, but what does that better? The singers are simply SUPBERB. Constance Towers portrays a SPLENDID Anna, even though Marni Nixon has a sweeter, smoother voice. June Angela sings 'My Lord and Master' and the other songs BEAUTIFULLY, I don't know how she reached all those high notes, but then again, Rita Moreno is 'smoother'. Yul Brynner is wonderful as usual, Martin Vidvonic(Lun Tha) sings MUCH better than Carlos Riva's singing voice in the 1956 movie, and as for Hye-Young Choir, I think she beats Terry Saunders. Her best song is 'Western People Funny'. And Gene Profanto and Alan Amick who play Prince Chulalonkorn and Louis are BRILLIANT too, and they sing 'A Puzzlement(reprise)' REALLY well. However, Constance Tower's 'Shall I Tell You What I Think of You' is not that good, and Marni Nixon is alot better anyway, because Towers sounds like an old woman at times. Anyway, overall, this IS a MUST!

One of industrial music's founders, Jack Dangers has morphed from rock's resident futurist to become headmaster of the old school. In 1999 he cofounded Tino, a record label focused primarily on breakbeat: vinyl sets of protean drum loops coated in spaced-out samples. Hello Friends! collects over a dozen Tino tracks into an hour of continuous party music. Listen to how he leaps from the surreal conclusion of "Mambothon" (perfect for hipster wedding receptions) into the hard-driving "Kick It Dub," or how four minutes later he uses a distorted voice to duct tape that track to the one that follows it. Dangers enjoys stressing the seams between component parts, winding up one song's rhythmic motor just in time to jump headlong into the next. If you miss the days before you'd heard one too many samples of James Brown's whip-crack rhythm sections, Dangers is here to make things right. --Marc Weidenbaum

Customer Reviews:
Breaks/Bass Nirvana.......2006-12-02
It never ceases to amaze how some electronic artists who produce breaks fall so short of the heavy loud drum sound the genre necessitates. Jack Dangers is a breaks master who delivers the loud, crusty beats that I need time and again. People like Hybrid need to go to Tino's Breaks school. Two thumbs up for this record. It never gets boring especially if one possesses a hefty loudspeaker rig.
Zowie!.......2005-06-05
This is a must-have! Jack Dangers applies his perfect ear and sense of rhythm to a combination of meat beat-ey sounds and latin sounds, presumably from his "Tino" alliance. The result is a white-hot blend of textures and beats that tickle your ear and start your toes tapping. From the Mambo to Dub and beyond, diverse genres are tackled with the same proficiency. . .
Jack Dangers extends 'Meat Beat' brilliance to side project.......2003-10-30
A side Project from "Meat Beat Manifesto" frontman `Jack Dangers'....differs slightly from his Meat Beat Manifesto work, as it has a more Trip-Hop / Dub feel to it....the usual trademarks of Complex Breaks & Beats, with snippets of Dialogue still remain, but here it's direction takes a slightly less hurried approach here, with a more hypnotic sound. Case in point track 8 ("D.U.B. Dub") weaves wonderful Dub instrumentation with arranged breakbeats to joyous effect...and the move into track 9 "Elegant Dub", is virtually seamless...the mixing also deserves a mention, with its rough & ready approach, contrasting wonderfully with each track, and thus creating something that feels like a superior mix tape mish-mash, and although this is a solo album, it compares extremely favourably with the best of his `Meat Beat Manifesto' work. But be warned....this is not 'Meat Beat Manifesto' insofar as this is ideally suited to home consumption, and if the idea of a Predominately dub influenced album with the usual smatter of vocal dialogue appeals, then this will ultimately appeal that those looking for a smoke-fuelled variation on the IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) genre.
Would have been a great stocking stuffer!.......2002-12-30
Must have been living under a rock. Never heard of "Tino Corp." until recently (the Tino Dub series dates back to '98.) Regardless, this is excellent (albeit different) stuff, and I can't recommend it enough for anyone who enjoys MBM. As someone noted in the reviews below, this is a mix CD picking up bits n' pieces from the other Tino Corp releases (Tino Dub series, Bo Square & DHS.)
This is pretty cool stuff.......2002-01-13
Once you see that Jack Dangers was in control of this, you knew you were in for a sonic ride. And what a ride it is. Jack started a record label named Tino Corp. and this CD is basically him doing a continuous mix of the label's offerings. If you're familiar with MBM's latest offerings you know that this is not your run of the mill techno music. Instead you definately hear a Latin and Carribean influence in the beats. It makes for a somewhat mellow sound without becoming ambient. If you liked MBM's last two CD's, you'll probably like this as well. If you've never heard anything by Jack Dangers or MBM, I would recommend you start with _99%_, probably MBM's most accessible music. Either way you won't go wrong.

Carly Addressing Love and Loss.......2006-08-09
This album finds Carly addressing love and loss, with beauty, melody, grace, and humor. It's mostly about the dissolution of her marriage to JT. Indeed, several songs are addressed to him directly -- "Orpheus," with its wrenching lyrics of love, loss, and heartbreak; "It Happens Every Day," with its sing-song melody hiding the sadness of marital loss.
Other tracks find Carly attempting be optimistic about her new life -- "You Know What to Do," with its seductive, playful melody; and a great remake of "Is This Love," with ringing harmmonies and an upbeat bass backbeat.
But the two songs that really stand out are "Menemsha" and the title track. The former is a look back at young love, happier, carefree times, with a children's choir providing joyful back up. It's one of her best songs. The latter details the sweeping love affair of her parents, a love story that is rendered with care and emotion.
The closer, "Floundering," finds Carly addressing what her friends are saying about her in the wake of her break up with JT, which she handles with typical humor and good grace.
I cannot believe this album is out of print. It's one of Carly's most personal and meaningful artistic statements, and I hope this problem is remedied soon.
OneOfCarly'sGreatestCD's.......2005-04-06
I was so excited the first time I heard "You know what to do"played on the radio, and waited up all night to see the video played on MTV.I thought for sure this cut would be a huge hit."Hello Big Man" was the second single released, about the romance of Carly's Mom and Dad,and how they met,and Carly's Mother was in the video. There are so many great songs on this CD,with different sounds and beutifull ballads,"It happens everyday," about the end of Carly and James,"(You use to adore me)such a sad line about the first couple of rock and roll."Menemsha"another beutifull number. "Hello Big Man is a must have for your Carly Simon collection.
Carly at crossroads.......2003-07-12
As an avid Carly fan I bought this album when it first came out and loved it, of course. Several years later I was at a Target store and was in line to pay and there was a rack of CDs...at the checkout. Hello Big Man was right in front! I'm the sort of person that doesn't buy the one "in front" but there was only one copy so I grabbed it. It has been a staple in my car CD player ever since. I love "You Know What To Do" with its erotic bass line and also because of the sexy video Carly put out for the song. I have that on tape still. "Menemsha" is probably one of the most beautiful songs Carly has ever recorded. My favorite song on this album is "Damn You Get To Me", with its single acoustic guitar opening and the sing-along ending. The lyrics can send chills down my spine if I'm in the right (wrong?) mood. "It Happens Everyday" & "You Don't Feel The Same" are two more songs along this same relationship-in-trouble vein. I love the playfulness of "Is This Love", "Such A Good Boy" & "Floundering". The title tune, starting with a budding romance and flowing into a lifelong marriage, is the masterpiece on this CD, however, mainly because the subject is Carly's parents, so naturally her heart is poured into this track. Not that it isn't poured into every other track, as well. All of Carly's music is very personal and "from the heart" and any listener with an open heart can't help but be touched by her talent.

Watch Out...Here They Come!.......2000-07-20
Big Hello is AWESOME!
Buy this album. Every song is a gem. No lack of hooks here--every song is memorable! Besides the obvious similarity to Gwen of no Doubt, Chloe F. Orwell is rock's answer to mamby-pamby over-the-top singers. And Brad....well, words can't express the energy exuded. Definitely one of my favs for the year--or decade, for that matter! I'm anxiously awaiting the next cd from this FANTASTIC band. Every song sticks in your head like glue.
High energy. Excellent tunes. Great female lead singer........1999-10-28
"Star 69" will be stuck in your head for days. Six or seven great songs. Saw the band in Chicago. Great live too. Very impressive for a first album. Drummer is Brad Elvis from "Elvis Brothers."
"Apple" is a total joy from start to bleedin' finish!.......1998-06-12
The Parasol label is a sign of quality you can generally trust when it comes to buying American power pop, and they've completely excelled themselves with this record. "Apple" is a total joy from start to bleedin' finish. There's a hint of Blondie in the mix, a taste of the Rezillos, a mere smidgen of the Go-Go's, but most importantly, every song here leaves a lasting impression. In fact it sounds like a greatest hits collection, everything here could be a single. Choosing a few standouts could prove difficult, but here goes. "Star 69" is wonderful, so's "Today Will Be Yesterday Tomorrow". "Sister Mary" is getting close to perfection, and "Hooked On The Girl" betters it. I give up. That's four out of the first five tracks and I've hardly started. All that's left for me to say, is make sure you get a chance to hear it somehow.
"The Apple Album" goes far beyond mere "power pop".......1998-06-12
The first time I heard "The Apple Album", the debut CD from Big Hello, I was at home reading an old punk fanzine from '79. The Big Hello disc was so appropriate, it wasn't even funny. At the beginning of the eighties, many of the new wave bands sounded like this, well before they decided disco wasn't such a bad idea. Big Hello are not 80's revivalists by any means (even though one of them was an Elvis Brother), and "The Apple Album" goes far beyond mere "power pop", but it still manages to evoke memories of the '79 - '82 era without sounding like a time capsule. Of special note are the vocals of Chloe F. Orwell, who can charm without being overtly precious or "cute".
Catchy Pop.......1998-06-12
The catchiest pop I've heard in a while comes courtesy of Chicago's Big Hello, a two-guy, two-girl combo that manages to make indie-rock lovable again. In the fine tradition of Cheap Trick, they're sorta cute and sorta geeky, even if each member embodies both aspects simultaneously. But oh, those songs...

Be aware: this CD does not contain recordings from the original cast releases, rather it provides new and jazzy versions by popular artists of R&H's era. I bought this CD because of the cover art (I'm into graphic design as well as everything else in the world of the arts) and because I'm a fan of R&H...what a treat. This is for those R&H fans who can appreciate all interpretations of their work. :)
Garland, Stafford, Lee and more sing Broadway classics.......2001-02-04
"Hello Young Lovers" is probably the best of the Capitol Sings series, not only because the hits of Rogers & Hammerstein remain popular but also because this album has some great covers taken from the label's inventory from 1949 to 1965. One of the hallmarks of the series is that you get Broadway standards done in different musical styles such as Bobby Darin's peppy title track, Nancy Wilson jazzy version of "People Will Say We're in Love" and Jo Stafford's sultry and mellow "Some Enchanted Evening." There are group harmonies from the Andrews Sisters, the Starlighters and the Jeff Alexander Singers. There are also some songs you have probably never heard, such as Helen O'Connell doing "No Other Love" from "Me and Juliet." For those of you who are very open minded, there are gender switches, with Tennessee Ernie Ford singing "My Favorite Things," Vic Damone doing "The Sound of Music," and the aforementioned Stafford cover of "Some Enchanted Evening." The album saves the best for last, with Judy Garland's "You'll Never Walk Alone" and the Sinfonia of London playing "The Carousel Waltz." Even if you never were around to catch the originals, if you are fans of Rodgers & Hammerstein you will enjoy listening to Peggy Lee, Al Martino and the rest doing their unique interpretations of some of your favorite songs.
Very good and highly original interpretations.......2000-07-07
One of the best of the series! Far better than for example the Cole Porter and also better than the Gershwin CD in my opinion. (The compilations by Brad Benedict, who compiled the greatest part of the series except i.e. the ones mentioned above generally prove a sense of humor). Sound quality (remastered):*****
Also highly recommendable: The Irvin Berlin collection (listen for example to the ecstatic interpretation of "Blue Skies").
