Album Description
Since 1992, Steve Rashid, an award-winning composer, musician and music producer, has made the creation of family-related audio products a primary focus of his career. With As In A Mirror, his third solo CD for Woodside Avenue Music Productions, Rashid's focus shifts to one of spirituality. The inspiration and intent behind this collection of solo piano improvisations comes from a desire to explore a private spiritual side, while allowing listeners to enjoy the music on any level they choose.

With the release of As In A Mirror Rashid explores a new area of music for one who has composed and played jazz most of his life. For the past several years, Rashid has been accompanying the choir at the Catholic church his family attends. One Sunday, needing some music during a meditation, the choir director asked Rashid if he would play a piano piece. He decided to improvise a meditation, which the congregation enjoyed, and which led to the improvisations becoming a regular part of the services during which Rashid plays.

With these meditations in mind, and armed with a selection of biblical passages, Rashid retreated to his recording studio to create As In A Mirror. The resulting piano improvisations were directly inspired from both Old and New Testament passages, and reveal jazz, gospel and contemporary classical influences. Rashid considers each selection an abstraction, or indirect reflection of the text, and hopes that the spiritual nature of the music will appeal to people of many faiths.

He comments, "Although my personal beliefs are quite specific, they are also quite private. It is not my intent to tell people what to believe. I do know, however, that I feel most centered when I allow myself to go to that quiet place where my innermost beliefs are held. And when I go there, this music is the result. With it I am simply trying to provide a vehicle to help other people visit that same meditative or prayerful place within themselves."

None of this, however, is to deny Rashid's own background, and for people who may be interested, the scriptural passages from which the pieces were inspired are included in the liner notes.

    Album Description

The liner notes alone are worth the price of admission. It's clear that Jamie Klimek and his Mirrors are as gleefully damaged or as bubbly brutal as anything that came out of 70's CLE - if all bands were like this, the world would be much better off. Klimek sounds like the backwash from a McDonald's Milkshake - unhealthy & sweet (that's a compliment). We're as excited as pie here. Finally, this record is getting a proper release and hopefully it won't put us out of business; the last label to put this out back in 1989 went under within a week of the release date, having shipped a precious few copies of the album—just another nail in the series of nails that have kept the Mirrors and their Cleveland brethren 6 feet under ground all these years. ROIR's "Remodeled Coffin" comes complete w/ 13 bonus tracks culled from the "Nail" sessions and from sessions for a never-released second LP.

The lone review for Mirrors' Another Nail in the Coffin (Resonance, 1989): "Premier power poppers…tumbling all bright and shiny out of the speakers, the Mirrors snap and shimmer through wrapped-up bundles of clever pop ditties, without holding back or playing suave and mature, ripping into hooks and harmonies as energetically as 19 year-olds…and while occasionally dizzying and confusing, the Mirrors' pell-mell approach…can also take one's breath away." - CMJ, Nov. `91

          3 out of 5 stars Electric Scotto.......2002-09-25

I like much of Scotto's artistry, but this is just not her cup of tea. Her high notes sound like they are plugged into an electric socket! AHHHHH!!!... Even her usual, wonderful word painting is not there. Her Vien's at the end of the garden scene are worse than the most mushy mouthed Sutherland (who could at least produce beautiful sounds). Get the Sony arias disc with Renata Scotto, which, oddly enough, shows her in much better and firmer voice, even though it was recorded later.

Ghiaurov is magnificent, as always and Kraus provides more elegant support than many of his later recordings.
If you want a verismo-like performance, get the recording with Freni (awesome......the largest voiced Margie on record). Domingo is dramatic, beautiful, if without a great high C. The final trio is SO dramatic. Hmmmm, what to buy?

5 out of 5 stars Unique Kraus in exceptional Faust.......2000-06-22

One of the aspects that made of Alfredo Kraus an exceptional singer was the care with which he chose the roles that resulted most adequate to his voice and temper. Faust was one of these paradigmatic roles, but unfortunatelly he never made a studio recording of this opera. The Tokio live recording of 1973 is thus an exceptional substitute and probably the only chance to enjoy the master's full Faust. By the time of this recording, he was at the highest point of his carreer, and we may appreciate here his precise technique, the delicacy of this style and the adequacy of his voice for the French repertoire. His 'Salut, demeure ... ' is a masterclass of singing. Ghiaurov follows the tradition of the Russian and Bulgarian basses and composes an overacted but vocally splendid Mephistophèles. He was also at the highest point of his carreer. Renata Scotto was an irregular soprano, but her Margheritte is excellent (probably only surpassed on records by Victoria de los Angeles in this role). Ethuin's direction is agile, perhaps too rapid in the choirs. The quality of the sound is good, and the price is astonishingly low. The complete recording of the Tokio version is rare and very difficult to get, so this selection of highlights is an alternative to consider seriously. Given the low price of this CD, it is a must for any opera lover and Kraus fan.
