Car Tunes (Blister)
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Following on the heels of the immensely smart, hip Wild Thing (and a string of gems before that), Car Tunes is a top-shelf concept album for kids. Here the theme is utterly simple: these are all tunes associated with cars. From washing them ("Car Wash") to driving them ("Fun, Fun, Fun"), cars are not only the subject matter, but also the place where the Sugar Beats insist Car Tunes ought to be played. Every song has a danceable vibe that goes from big, bright hip-shakers (Fine Young Cannibals' "She Drives Me Crazy") to simple snap-alongs, such as Roger Miller's "King of the Road." An especially charming component of "King" and the funky "Mustang Sally" is the colorful use of kids' voices, either as chorus or simple, cute background effect. In their previous work the Sugar Beats have hung their hats on an old-school set of instruments, but here they revel in rhythm tracks and keyboards. But none of that gets in the way of the spirit behind Car Tunes, which is classic Sugar Beats--aimed dually at different generations. Willie Nelson's "On the Road Again" recast as mid-tempo dance pop sung entirely by kids? It works for all involved. --Andrew Bartlett --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This double-CD set really makes you wish you'd been there when the show was recorded: you can hear the crowd going berserk at times, and the temptation is strong to do the same thing in the comfort of your living room. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Dreamgirls 2001.......2007-06-27
This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.
Not the real "DREAM" experience.......2007-04-04
Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.
Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.
Absolutely brilliant!.......2007-01-28
There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)
Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04
As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.
One Night Only .......2006-07-19
I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

Have Fun CD!.......2007-01-10
I bought this CD for my girls they are 7 & 11. We are homeschooling family and we spend a lot of time on the road. This is just a great CD to relax and fun with. No - trying to learn something new, Just Have Fun! They have really enjoyed it.
Great music to listen to while driving the kids to school!.......2005-09-15
Sugar beats is a musical group of children directed by Carole King's daughter (Tapestry, Really Rosie). The songs are familiar to adults, with a kid-friendly, upbeat arrangement. "Love Train" is our favorite. The electronic drum beats and the 70's style rhythm guitar lead in hooks you in immediately. The musicianship is top notch. My teenage son even liked it. Great road trip CD too, won't annoy the adults. They'll want to sing along too!
She Drives Me Crazy.......2003-03-04
This is great. Especially she drives me crazy. Jesse McCartney sings it and he has a great voice
Sugar Beats' BEST!.......2002-03-08
This is Sugar Beats' BEST. We have all of them. My kids (6 & 10) fell in love with How Sweet It Is and one by one we've bought the 4 or 5 other Sugar Beats CDs. Even the older one doesn't seem ready to grow out of Sugar Beats soon. Stay AWAY from Kids Bop. It stinks compared to this.
what is up with this...?.......2001-04-17
i am currently 25 years old and single. often times, i find myself in a car and i wish there was some music playin. you know the kind, it goes all "bump...bump..bumpity boo" and stuff. anyways, i gots myself a copy of "sugar". i did not like it at all. i dont think children should have this cd either, seein as they cant drive and all. i have to go to work, so i will check you all later. peace...

My Profile- 43 yo no qualifications whatsoever
So I decided to pull this cd from my stack and re-hear it, its been a long time, one of those rare cds I picked up at my used cd store, a treasure I lost because the guy went out of biz!!!
First one knows immediatly that there is impeccable execution..Its not too common (at least to my musical exposure) to find viola, bass, guitar and percussion intercating in jazz rhythims as well as doing exploratory work on their own.. oh, but the sound.. the cadence of the acchords.. its refreshing.. certainly uplifting and non-intrusive, so you can work and meditate with this as well..
Make me wonder why this group is almost in total oblivision

Customer Reviews:
Ten Great Car Tunes.......2001-11-12
You've gotta hear this one, and when you hear it, you've gotta have it. From the first engine-revving guitar riff, Jamie Rounds' "Ten Great Car Tunes" is great for the car, all right - you'll crank it up, sing along, drum on the steering wheel. And it's great anywhere else - at a party, on the dance floor, or any time you need to lift your spirits with fine rock n roll.
This album cooks, with an amazing range of styles from '60s classic rock to pop to folk-rock to Nashville. Rounds is a triple-threat singer-songwriter-guitarist, and he's so damn good at each, it's hard to say which comes out on top. His voice, always strong, is bright and tender with the first glimpse of a new face; soulful and ragged-edged when obsessive love has him in its grip. His falsetto will raise the hair on your neck, and he pulls off a pitch-perfect Beach Boys harmony (ably backed up, as on all the cuts, by Duane Jarvis).
As a songwriter, Rounds shines equally in lyrics and melody. He's a born rock poet, always finding that point where the personal meets the universal. And he's got the knack for taking a familiar phrase - "so long," "a little too soon to tell," "long shot" -- and conjuring up every possible fresh twist. Every word comes through nice and clear, and you'll find a lot of "yeah, that's right!" moments -- like in the first car tune, "So Long": "You can't whine when the siren finds you/you can't fake it when the fuel is gone/but you just might find if you limp it to the line/the line ain't so long, so long..."
In "Asleep and Awake," Rounds nails the fever of romantic fixation: "Bad guys win, good guys lose/I don't know the difference/the world could end on the 6 o'clock news/and I won't know the difference...I dream of you, asleep and awake/but I don't know the difference." And in "Tears Don't Care," he sings pointedly to a lover who'd earlier "set him free" -- and has just gotten a taste of her own medicine: "Round baby, round it goes in a circle/you see it on the young & the restless every day/somebody thinks they're the one/invented the game of hit and run/just to find that anybody can play."
A couple of instrumentals really showcase his guitar mastery (the second is a delightful homage to a '60s gem - if you were around back then, on the first few listens you'll probably expect it to be followed by the ominous opening strains of "White Rabbit"). But Rounds is more than an ace guitarist; he handles all the instruments here, except for Duane Jarvis' guitar assist on one cut, and Avery Augur's soulful banjo on another.
On your first listen, I defy you to play it just once. The first time I played it, I punched Play again twice and only stopped after the third time through because I HAD to go somewhere, and there's no CD player in my car!
Get "Ten Great Car Tunes" and look for more from Jamie Rounds. He's the real deal.
More, please!.......2001-09-28
Jamie Rounds is a remarkable musician. His "Ten Great Car Tunes" (nearly his alone, including instrumentals, lyrics, and vocals) gets better every time I listen to it. The lyrics range from fun to philosophical, and often catch you off guard with simple, disarming honesty. His melodies pull you in, follow you around throughout the day, and are beautifully enhanced by his harmonies. The variety too is impressive, from pop and rock and roll (to which you can't help but move) to sweet acoustic. And it is all powerfully supported by his skill with guitars (the CD includes two really fine instrumentals). I fully trust it will leave you, as it left me, hoping for much more music from this very talented man.
A Great Addition.......2001-06-16
Jamie Rounds' 10 Great Car Tunes is a terrific album, filled with some of my most favorite things - inherently hummable melodies, memorable lyrics and skillful guitar work. It twists and turns through a variety of musical styles from almost-country to good, old rock and roll, spiritedly displaying Rounds' versatility as writer, guitarist and vocalist. I've found a different 'Car Tune' running through my head every day since the album arrived. It would be a great addition to anyone's collection, but be prepared to sing along.
