I have these DVD's and I can tell you that they will not be a huge part of my baby's development. I received them as a gift from someone that thinks that all you need to do is plunk your child in front of a TV all day without giving the baby any attention. You can see why these DVD's are popular at Day Care Centers or what I like to call, "Concentration camps for baby's with lazy parents", because they know that they can sit their kid/baby in front of the TV and let them turn into a thoughtless zombie while they listen to Baby Einstein totally ruin classics by Bach and DeBussy by playing the music with very cheap midi keyboards. I can get better quality music by whistling Dixie with a mouth-full of saltine crackers.

Also, it has been proven that classical music has nothing to do with the cognitive development of young people. Now, teach them how to play piano or violin and you have yourself an actual YOUNG EINSTEIN, but listening to this kind of music does nothing for the development of the brain. It is just for lazy parents that can't sit down with their kids and play with them or read them a book.

its a good product with very fine music and my toddler realizes that it is sleep time, if I play it. he goes to bed and sleeps after a couple songs. I have trouble in some songs are some months.. dont know why.

I bought this CD for my grandniece, but after listening to it, I determined that no one would ever play this for her except me. I would have kept it for myself but I have the grown-up versions of each of the classical masterpieces on this CD. So, I ended up returning it for a full refund. If you want your kids to be exposed to classicl music, it's a great buy. But if you don't think they will get to listen to it, don't waste your time.

Baby Einstein: Lullaby Classics

These synthesizer versions of classical songs get really old, really fast. Worse yet, the songs are sometimes not soothing at all, especially the very first song. The song seems to get particularly loud and uptempo, which is precisely what you don't expect in a lullaby. Please listen to the sample of the first song at least before you buy.

This CD worked great to put my daughter to sleep while I rocked her in my arms, and I enjoyed the choices of songs and the arrangements. However, I would have preferred that real instruments were used.

The title track came to Jeremy Toback (guitar, vocals) on a walk with his 1-year-old son, Ezra - after wondering what life would be like through his eyes. And Renee Stahl (vocals) crafted her haunting and minimalist lullaby, Powder Blue, out of her own meditations on motherhood before becoming one herself. Committed to keeping the production as raw and personal as possible, Renee and Jeremy recorded the entire album in what would in a matter of weeks become the nursery for Renee s first daughter, Amelia. The duo vowed not to be afraid to let the odd minor key shade a little dark into the album s sunny canvas, and to have fun with their lyrics without straying from the underlying positive message. No matter what your age.....This cd is wonderful! renee & jeremy's voices are soothing and the songs are sweet & inspiring... Putumayo produced CDs is the only music I have ever bought without knowing it first and I have never been disappointed. This is a gorgeous collection which my children listen to at night but which can also be enjoyed by everybody of all ages at any time of the day! My 4 yr old falls asleep to the Dreamland CD every night. We love it. We have other Putumayo CDs and love them all. There isn't a song we just don't on the CD's. I highly recommend.

This is not your typical "baby music" CD, watered down melodies with sterilized syncopation and minimal instruments. These are luscious, rich, harmonic, melodic songs that my 16 month old twins have loved since they were born. Now, they wait for me to turn it on before naptime and start swaying to the music before it even starts. Mom and Dad never tire of listening to it - an important consideration as it will become a favorite in the nursery! The a capella voices are heavenly. There are male and female artists on the album, and the use of all kinds of interesting instruments from different cultures. We use it for daytime naps - I put the CD player on shuffle/repeat and get a couple of hours peace and quiet. Often I turn the nursery monitor up, just so I can hear the music myself.

Putumayo's Playground series consistently lives up to its name by sending far-flung cultures out to recess, freeing them to reveal their musical fun sides. The metaphor ends there, but the parallel to actual playgrounds doesn't: as any parent who's felt forlorn at times knows, nothing nullifies a dreary afternoon funk more effectively than a trip to the neighborhood playground. So it goes with the series. Animal Playground, the latest to swing, slide, and see-saw its way into agile imaginations of all ages, is a fine-tuned creature feature as playful as a giant-pawed puppy. Even if you don't know what forro is (North Brazilian dance music), or that "Cantigo do Sapo" has something to do with a little singing frog, you'll want to shake a tail feather in time to the beat; that holds for Quartetto Cetra's right-on Italian reworking of "Old McDonald," "Nella Vecchia Farroria." No disrespect to the other exotic offerings here ("Aves," from Honduras, for example), but the English-language songs are most winning of all: Canada's the Be Good Tanyas captivate with "The Littlest Birds," and you can't help but a love a man who cries crocodile tears from his puppy dog eyes, in this case Jon Langford who, when he's not a Wee Hairy Beastie belting out "Animal Crackers," leads the excellent punk/folk band the Mekons. --Tammy La Gorce

I love this album. I bought it for my daughter (who LOVES the other Putumayo
CDs that she has) and have found myself listening to it without her. "The Littlest Birds" compelled me to order a The Be Good Tanyas album and the "wee bear" in "The Three Little Bears" is adorable. I guess that my only issue with it is that it is sort of a stretch to call all of these songs "animal" songs. For instance, is a dinosaur REALLY an animal. Not REALLY. While all of the songs feature an animal in them, not all of the songs are ABOUT animals. But is is a great album.

This anthology of children-related tracks originates from the globally conscious Putamayo Records catalog. Artists from Africa (Senegal's Touré Kunda, Congo's Ricardo Lemvo), Europe (France's Manu Chao), the Caribbean (Jamaica's Cedella Marley Booker), North America (Buckwheat Zydeco and Eric Bibb from the U.S.; Canada's Teresa Doyle), South America (Brazil's Nazaré Pereira), and Australia (Trevor Adamson) offer tracks, and while the styles and moods vary, the album gels excellently. Catching enough for adults. Simple enough for children. Includes lyrics in orginal languages and translation into English. We love to sing along even though we don't speak wolof. I only wish that they had named the lanuages being sung.

Here's a likable roundup for anyone who failed to connect with the family music bandwagon when it first rolled into homes five years ago. Some of the coolest players in the crop contribute to Putumayo Kids: Dan Zanes and Friends' "Bushel and a Peck," Rosie Flores' spirits-to-the-sky "Red Red Robin," and Taj Mahal's gruff "Don't You Push Me Down," all sound out for the world that sweetness and simplicity, paired with the right lyrics add up to perfection. The title suggests singing along, but that's strictly optional. Unlike other samplers that collect catchy songs under that banner, listening along with Putumayo is a lot of fun too, especially given that you're provided with liner notes that list lyrics as well as song meanings in English, French, and Spanish. It should not be overlooked that gazing at this package is satisfying in itself. I'm happy to say this is one my kids love. I even caught my 4-yr old daughter in the room "singing" along. It is one of the few cds that they request. Realy nice. Just one note: if you own Daddy-0 (various artists perform Woody Guthrie music) then you will find a track or two familiar. The flavor of the cd is similar as well. If you mix your own cds for the car, etc. the two would work really well together.

My grandparents sent this as a gift for my daughter's 2nd birthday. We listened to it on a 10 hour road trip and none of us tired of it. In fact, it's been in my car's CD player for 2 years and we listen to it all the time. The songs are not like the Wiggles or other similar artists. Everyone can enjoy them and sing along.

I bought this for my friend's daughter. I know she'll love it as much as we have.

I found this in a grocery store of all places and bought it on a whim. My 13 month old likes it, but even if he didn't, I love it! I "car danced" all the way home! It is so up tempo, it's the perfect driving CD and I've got it in the house now to clean to. It's a little traditional African, a little dance club, a little disco but it totally works. Can't wait to check out the other CDs in this collection.

Cynical types will accuse Disney of milking the "greatest" concept until it's drier than Tinkerbell's fairy dust ("Supercalafragilisticexpealidocious," "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Da," and "Heigh Ho" were hits off of Vol. 1; "Bare Necessities," "It's a Small World," and "Some Day My Prince Will Come" stole the show on Vol. 2), but a glimpse of this installment's track listing is all it'll take to squash their suspicions. Once again running reverse-chronologically, Vol. 3 opens with Jonatha Brooke's gorgeously achy ballad "I'll Try," from 2002's arguably not-so-great Return to Neverland, and gradually reaches back through the years to re-raise the curtain on Toy Story 2 ("When She Loved Me," performed by Sarah McLachlan), The Lion King ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight"), Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews's classic "A Spoonful of Sugar"), Pinocchio ("Give a Little Whistle"), and a bundle of treasured others, bottoming out at 1933's "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" from The Three Little Pigs. Vol. 3 is not without its weak moments--would a G-rated movie-goers' poll produce Beauty and the Beast's "Gaston" or The Hunchback of Notre Dame's "Topsy Turvy" on a hits list? Seems unlikely. Still, the bulk of these tracks are, as the included Little Mermaid song goes, "Part of Your World," and the spread of decades they represent proves their staying power. Don't expect Disney to latch the lid on its inexhaustible archives until a dozen or so of these records, each as strong as the next, beckon you back for more. --Tammy La Gorce

Nothing brings sweet recollection of Disney movies like hearing the wonderful songs. In an age where there so much music with no redeeming qualities, these Disney CDs are priceless. Wonderful for the entire family to listen to around the house or in the car while traveling. We can't help but sing along. We love that these are the original tracks from the movies! Wonderful! We now have all three volumes.

This Disney CD represents the "leftovers" that didn't make it on Vol 1 and Vol 2 of this series. Although it has some of my favorites, I don't listen to the entire CD often. Disney could have done a better job of editing the which sound files should make the cut on this one. Still, it's nice to have all 3 CDs.

Everything about this CD, from its eye-popping cool packaging to its beautiful booklet, is wonderful, perhaps peerless. It's a study that spans 16 countries, catching paeans to childhood sleep from varied traditions. The set traverses the Cape Breton Gaelic tradition with the Rankin Family, Haiti with pop stars Boukman Eksperyans, and the African continent with music from Tonga, Algeria, and Cameroon. Despite their distances from each other, at times the songs sound quite alike. Voices might begin alone but then gather into choral size, with a reliance on wordless passages to emphasize the flow of time as sleep encroaches. In execution, the surprises are many. Algerian Houria Aïchi sounds East Indian; the Traditional Japanese Music Ensemble of New York sounds poised somewhere between a stately concert of historical court music and a touching homage to childhood; and German singer Michelle sounds pop-music ready even as she toes the line on singing a sleep-triggering song. Beyond being a great collection of international music, this is probably the most interesting mix available of cultural voices approaching the issue of children sleeping. --Andrew Bartlett

I purchased this CD in conjunction with another CD with lullabies for a friend who had just had a baby. She said the music is fine but it's got an audio portion that is totally useless for her. She said she's not been able to get the CD to play just the music w/out the video portion.

We have over a dozen lullabye cds, and this is the only one we have worn out from constant use, and are replacing for baby #2. My daughter got hooked from the first track, Chi Mi Na Mór-Bheanna. As soon as it would come on, she would calm down and focus, and the other tracks would lull her to sleep. When we made the mistake of forgetting it at home on a road trip, I had to sing it to get her to stop crying (still learning the gaelic words to that!). It is a brilliant, well-compiled, album of tracks you won't find elsewhere (and which won't bore you, the parent). I have given it over and over as a baby present; it is tried and true. An earlier reviewer commented that the tracks were jarring; we don't find them to be, but then again, we don't like "new age" music (i.e., Wyndam Hill) because we find it too monotonous, so it is a question of musical tastes. Just an added note: the version featured of the classic French lullabye featured, Fais do-do, is truly lovely.
