Deplorably cute and brazenly sentimental Christmas music comes in many shapes and sizes, but when it comes in the form of these hugely popular twins you know that if your kid is a fan, it's going to cost you. Mary-Kate and Ashley aren't confident songbirds, so their many friends do the singing. The arrangements are generally slick, uptempo dance-pop versions of seasonal standards ("Sleigh Ride") plus a "Christmas Carol Medley" that is rivaled only by another precious medley titled "Swingle Bells" and a couple of personal tunes ("I Do Believe It's Christmas Eve" and "What Christmas Means to Me"). Plus Midler's tasty stable of producers and arrangers have packed the big band and stringed arrangements with their own musical warmth against Midler's smart song choices and contagious vocal performances. Cool Yule mixes the standard traditional pop pieces--like Steve Allen's snappy title track, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," and "I'll Be Home for Christmas"--with the sole hymn, "O Come, O Come, Emanuel." But nobody's picking up this stocking stuffer because they want to go to church. Bette's got merrymaking on her mind more than anything else. Her duet with Johnny Mathis on "Winter Wonderland/Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" is as much fun as her "From a Distance (Christmas Version)" is a somber and sobering antiwar statement. How she can move from sounding girlish and playful to sophisticated and jazz-smart in the space of one note to the next may not be supernaturally inspired, but it sure is fun to hear the joyful sounds she makes. Cool Yule is the most great song out of this album but the rest of the songs are pretty good. I have watched Cool Yule video but I dont know where the video went it just disappeared I am alittle disppointed tho but I can always watch the video of Cool Yule at different website so I dont worry about it.

I own many Christmas CDs. This one ranks in the Top 3. From the first track "Vauncing Chimes" on you are in for a smooth experience. Enjoy it!

I'm buying the CD because I wore out the tape.......2002-02-09

I own about 6 or more Christmas jazz CDs/tapes but this remains my favorite - so much so that we now have to buy it again because we wore our the tape.

For us it is perfect background music for mellow parties, opening presents, dinner, etc. I have wonderful memories of listening to this tape in the car during long drives to the family.

But the CD is NOT elevator music - it's a quality collection, worth listening to with the volume up. Some of my Christmas jazz CDs tend to be un-imaginative saxophone versions of tired Christmas classics. Not this CD - the songs are original and creative.

Lastly, it is "approachable" - the kind of jazz that non-experts (like me) tend to understand and enjoy.

Classic Blues & Jazz Lovers - Yule enjoy this Compilation.......2001-09-26

This is a jazzy blues yuletide compilation with classic jazz artists such as Chet Baker, Count Basie and Dexter Gordon playing some traditional holiday favorites. In addition, two versions of an original Thelonious Monk composition called "A Merrier Christmas" are also included. Contemporary jazz artists such as John Scofield and Benny Green also perform some compositions and vocal tracks by Lou Rawls and Dianne Reeves further add to the overall diversity of this compilation.

For those who can appreciate a more melancholic blend of yuletide jazz & blues, this is a great addition to the holiday collection.

Struttin with Santa !.......2000-12-31

I bought this CD a couple years ago and enjoyed it somewhat at the time, only to re-discover it this Christmas season and now I find I am playing it constantly! There are a variety of styles here, from quiet piano to small combo to big band to loud, noisy contemporary arrangements. It all fits together very well, surprisingly enough, though I usually skip over the two vocal tracks. The cover and the title are references to a classic bop album of the fifties, Sonny Clark's Cool Struttin'.

Great holiday listening.......1998-12-04

I've had this CD for several years and it is my favorite Holiday collection - lots of fun, jazzy arrangements which are festive, original and sure to cure your holiday blues. Instrumental Talent - not breathy synthesized fru fru music. If you like music live, jazz or blues, this is for you.

The Yuletide washes in the many moods of the season and Yule Be Miserable makes a great attempt at capturing those darker holiday sentiments that come with the holly and the ivy. Still, the title's slightly misleading--even with its cool liner notes by comic book icon Harvey "American Splendor" Pekar. While some of these blues tunes (like the renowned Billie Holiday's "Stormy Blues" and Spike Jones' whiney "My Birthday Comes on Christmas") are decidedly down and out, the performances generally will knock off those stockings hung with care. For every tune like Aaron Neville's pleading "Please Come Home for Christmas" or Billy Eckstine's "Blue Christmas," there's more light-hearted fare such as Louie Armstrong's inimitable "'Zat You, Santa Claus?," the two spirited tracks from Ella Fitzgerald ("Santa Claus Got Stuck in My Chimney," "Baby, It's Cold Outside"), and B.B. King's torn-up "Merry Christmas, Baby." Misery this bad never sounded so good. --Martin Keller

Though the title is slightly misleading and this isn't a collection of music that has you considering ending it all, it's good music that's fun to listen to and enjoy.

The title cracks me up, I just wish that it was used for some down and out Holiday music.

This CD is supposed to feature unhappy Christmas songs. But in reality, not very many of these songs are particularly mournful. But most of the songs are good, with the exception of Spike Jones' awful version of "Nuttin' For Christmas" (sung by a group of kids). But what is Billie Holiday's "Stormy Blues" doing here, which, although it fits the "miserable" concept, doesn't have anything to do with Christmas? It's also strange that they included two versions of the instrumental "Christmas Blues", although both versions are good. This is a decent CD, but it could have been much better.

FALSE ADVERTISING!!!!!!!!.......2001-12-27

I am a big fan of the Olsen Twins! And I also think that the FANS of the Olsen Twins are the greatest fans and deserve a fair honest review of this CD. What would your reaction be if you paid for Brittany Spears or N'Sync's latest CD and discovered they sang on less than half the songs on the CD! You would be very disappointed and feel very cheated! Well the same is true about this Olsen Christmas CD!!! Sure their friends really sound great like polished professionals, I loved ALL their songs on the CD---but I paid to hear the OLSEN TWINS!!!! If I wanted to hear other people I would buy a CD adverstising other people. The few songs that the OLSEN TWINS sang were very good! If it was not for the OLSEN TWINS doing a great job, especially on the song "Silent Night", I would of rated this CD just ONE or TWO stars. But I will give this CD a full THREE stars due to the tremendous effort by the OLSEN TWINS on the few songs they sang. "I Do Believe it's Christmas Time" was a very well written and beautifull ORIGINAL SONG. "Silent Night" gave me goose bumbs all over as I listened to their powerfull harmonizing...easily the best song they ever recorded! SUGGESTION: Why could they not have added Christmas songs from their "Christmas Party" video? RECCOMMENDATION: This CD would of been much much better if those "Guest Friends" would have been dropped from the CD and replaced with MORE songs from the Olsen Twins----That is what we PAID TO HEAR!!!!! Even if the extra Olsen Songs were not as good as the other songs, I think the public would be much much happier JUST TO HEAR THE OLSEN'S SING!!!!!!-----I hope Dualstar Entertainment Group can read this review!!!!

...There are not many songs in it where Mary-Kate and Ashley really sing. The rest are some other people singing but I would rather hear Mary-Kate and Ashley sing. The songs aren't bad but they just don't sing in many of them. I love the cd but would like to hear more of Mary-Kate and Ashley.

Ok, I've read the other reviews and here's what I got to say, Mary Kate and Ashley may not be he greatest sigers in the world, but they make a nice album. There nice girls, and some of the criticism I've been reading, they don't deserve. In my opinion, it's a great album with nice tunes, coming from a guy who's always ready to get into the christmas spirit. Mary Christmas!!

I just got it a few days ago and I have to say that this is definitely some of the best Christmas music arrangements I have heard in a long time! This is a pretty good collection of rockin' stocking stuffers. There are a few well known songs here, but most of them are pretty hard to find. This CD is out of print, but it's not too hard to find a cheap used copy of it. It is worth buying. Here is the track listing:

For that hardened jazz boho on your list, this 15-piece slab serves up a lot of cool yule trimmings. There are goodies for baddies here, including Javon Jackson, who takes you on a drum-lead, saxophone-improv trip during "Santa Baby," exploring all the nooks and crannies of Santa's workshop. Bob Dorough reprises the cynical classic "Blue X-Mas" while Sweet Daddy Love and the Blue Note Ad Hoc Orchestra revisit that beatnik staple "Bebop Santa Claus." Other noteworthy tracks include Jacky Terrasson soulfully welding "Adeste Fideles" and "Little Drummer Boy" in a groovin' orgy of organ-chased gospel rhythms and sprite piano riffs. No hip set would be complete without "Zat You, Santa Claus?", here handled admirably by Benny Green and Miles Griffith (although no one can lay a finger on Louis Armstrong's version). A good jazzy christmas with a few skippers.......2000-12-31

What recommends this compilation most are two terrific vocals of two rarely heard, unusal christmas songs: Steve Allen's "Cool Yule" and Jack Fox's "Zat You Santy Claus?" (the only scary Christmas song!). Also a mean jazz guitar arrangement of "Youre a Mean One Mr. Grinch."

So this cd gets points for interesting selections. Unfortunately, there are a couple of skippers, most notably, Judi Silvano's syrupy, broadway-singing-style, campy version of the admittedly cloying song, "I'd Like You For Christmas."

What a hidden gem.......2005-12-26

I am a Christmas Music junkie, I picked this up used, and had to log on to tell people about it. This is a great CD, and usually there are only one or two pieces on a compilation that you like, but the majority of these are great! And one of the swingingest versions of silent night I have ever heard (which is a pretty rare feat!!)

This album reminds me of everthing Christmas is and should be. These traditional songs, that give Christmas that feeling of child like anticipation, are set to the genre of music that makes everything better; Jazz. This would be a wonderful addition to your collection. You will find yourself listening to this album well beyond the holiday season.
