Coconut Moon
Editorial Reviews
Mothering Magazine, March/April, 1999
Fun, clever lyrics and strong vocals make this album enjoyable for both children and adults. Although many of the songs are hilarious, the band's best feature is its wonderful harmonies . . . Coconut Moon is very polished, good-time music. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Album Description
Coconut Moon is the third recording by the national award winning group, The Green Chili Jam Band. It was awarded a 1997 Parents' Choice Gold Award and a 1998 American Library Association Notable Children's Recording award. According to Family Fun Magazine, Coconut Moon's "glossy pop tunes, touched with a Caribbean influence, draw from a melange of styles with captivating results. . .sheer enjoyment from first-rate family entertainers." Long known for providing quality, entertaining music for kids and their families, The Green Chili Jam Band has once again created a recording that reflects their philosophy of respecting the natural intelligence and curiosity that kids possess. Their eclectic blend of musical styles, vocal harmonies, and storytelling has consistently garnered solid approval from parents and teachers, as well as the kids themselves.
This recording contains eleven original musical selections and one story. The album also won three New Mexico Music Coalition awards for best album of the year (across all genres), best producer, and most humorous song (Lard). "Lard" was also a finalist in the Best Song for Older Children category on the Children's Music Web.

This deserves far more attention.......2006-05-27
Not that I'm out to get Raffi, but why does he get all the attention? The Green Chili Jam Band, while less prolific, writes songs that I, as an adult, find far more interesting. "Lard" is uproariously funny. The fantastic world of the title song is entrancing. "Yo-Yo Rodeo," besides being catchy (as are many of the songs), challenges you to count how many yo-yo tricks you can find in the lyrics. Despite the awards their music has won, this band is far too obscure. Buy their cd for your family, and then get another one for a friend.
Not for kids only.......2003-06-08
Though advertised as children's music this album is light-hearted, positive and upbeat. It has a great sound!
Delightful and refreshing.......2002-10-05
Our entire family loves this CD. What makes it so unique is the quality of the songs, both the lyrics and the music. These are complex and thoughtful, funny and delightful. LARD is our absolute favorite but there are no bad choices on this CD. After I bought this one and realized how extraordinary it was, I immediately ordered all others by the same group through Amazon.com. I also bought several copies of each and give them as gifts to other families who may be weary of the typical kids songs with common beats and uninspiring words.

I bought this recording years ago for my children and it still is one of their favorites - and mine! The lyrics are clever and funny for children without being too juvenile for parents to enjoy, and the quality of the music and singing is top notch. We have all three of their recordings and love them all. I highly recommend these recordings for families and they are great gifts. When we introduce this music to friends and relatives they can't believe they never heard it before. We'll be listenting to these until they wear out.
The Best Music Available for Kids.......2000-03-04
We have all three of this group's albums and a day doesn't go by that we don't listen to at least one of them. We love the music as much as our 15 month old daughter does, and before her birth, we listened to nothing but classical music. The Green Chili Jam Band has greatly increased the joy in our home.

Eastern Music for Western Listeners.......2006-02-10
From a musicology perspective, this CD would probably not be considered a good representation of traditional Japanese music. On that same note (no pun intended), it's really hard to fault it's efforts. James Galway is a brilliantly trained classical flautist (or flutist, depending on whom you ask) who on occassion has delved into - shall we say, lesser? - forms of music, ie pop songs arranged for studio orchestra and his solo flute stylings, that can barely be considered one step up from salon or elevator music. No one can fault his musicianship, but occassionally, listening to him can be akin to listening to a rock star past his (or her) prime doing stuff they really shouldn't be anymore. In this case, however, he has selected a number of extremely accessible Japanese folk songs and had them arranged so any listener can appreciate them. There is nothing showy in his playing, the orchestra never over-powers or overshadows the material, and the whole CD rarely reaches forte, or even mezzo-forte. It is excellent music for a drive in the country (with the window open only part-way, that is), or a lazy summer afternoon out on the deck, or a low-key dinner party. In fact, I have used it several times in all such occassions. And after (literally) years of occassional listening, it never seems to get old. From a man who clearly wants to be something more than just "background music", he has done a damn fine job of creating some exceptionally relaxing music here. In case you're turned off by the prices of the available copies here on Amazon, you might want to check out his more recent Japanese-themed CD "The Enchanted Forest" which is just as relaxing as this one, but utilizes electronic accompaniment, and as a result is more unique and varied, and probably easier to find.
