The Cows Are Back In Town

Editorial Reviews
by Kathryn Greenaway
The Magpies show children's music the respect it deserves. The group's second recording is a marvelous mix of talent that parents could enjoy so much they just might listen to it again after the kids are in bed. I kid you not. The Ontario-based quintet was formed by Jim Wilde, former musical director for Peter Pringle. The collective years of experience the five bring to this, their second recording, resonates with humor and musical finesse. Give Peas a Chance is a mischievous wink in the direction of boomer mothers and fathers, and the odorous ode I Guess I'll Have to Change My Socks prompts children's squeals as parents wrinkle their noses and roll their eyes. And just wait until you hear the group's take on the nursery rhyme Mary Had a Little Lamb - it's comedic magic. Mary Had an Alligator jazzes up the familiar tune and twists the original lyrics into a hilarious knot with one heck of a surprise ending. The Cows Are Back is long - with 17 songs - but in this case, at least, more is good.

About the Artist
Magpies were formed by veteran Ontario musician Jim Wilde , who set out to record a few songs for his children, and ended up with an entire album (all original songs but two) and a band of talented and dedicated musicians as well. Jim, who plays keyboard, mandolin, guitar, bass and penny whistle writes the main body of the group's work. " I write about the things that interest my children....the things that amuse them.... But I don't play down to them when I'm writing (the music)...we put our... read more

Album Description
"These Canadian Magpies produce a more melodic sound than their avian namesakes. With clever lyrics and, at times, quirky perspectives, this group of talented musicians deliver well-crafted songs in a variety of contemporary styles. Humor abounds in titles like "Give Peas a Chance" and "Jurassic Toaster" and parents will be impressed with a style reminiscent of Sting in "Time Marches On." You'd be hard-pressed to find a better album of original music for school-aged children." (D. Moore - Family Planet Music )

5 out of 5 stars excellent variety for the kids and the highest quality!.......1999-05-28

This group has really got something going for them! The song writter understands kids and what will interest them, but also manages to throw in some educational stuff, too, like how many hours in a day and which direction the sun comes and goes in a day from the song "Long Long Day". The variety of music does not brainwash kids and even keeps an adult's attention well. My daughter loves this album and I do, too.
