All About Love
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Even Barry Bonds misses a pitch now and then, so let's cut Steven Curtis Chapman a little slack with the less-than-spectacular All About Love. After all, Chapman is riding an incredible wave of success on the heels of back-to-back brilliant releases, Speechless and Declaration. But this follow-up to the dynamic duo finds Chapman touting a collection of "true love" songs that are noble in intent but stylistically drab, including a perplexing cover of the Proclaimers' 1980s hit "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)." It's not all flat, though. The title track, "How Do I Love Her," and "Moment Made for Worshipping" are classic Chapman with lyrical contemporary references balanced against age-old wisdom, all buoyed by lively guitar-driven rock. But the remainder of the release seems all too common for an artist who has previously set the bar much higher. --Michael Lyttle

Another great CD by SCC.......2007-02-15
Due to the title, "All About Love" and after reading several reviews, I expected this CD to be very mellow and somewhat sappy. When I first played it, I was in a mellow mood and wanted to relax. However, the CD is not what I expected. It is classic SCC, with catchy rhythms and as always, with amazing lyrics. His remake of the Proclaimer's "I'm gonna be (500 miles)" is just as good, if not better, than the original. "We belong together (Tarzan and Jane)" is another upbeat number. The song, "11-6-64" is a touching number about the day his wife was born. Steven has added two songs from previous CD's, "I will be here" and "When love takes you in" which adds themselves nicely to this wonderful CD containing 16 songs. If you are a SCC fan, you definitely need to purchase this CD. At the same time I bought "All About Love," I also purchased Steven's CD entitled "Declaration." In my opinion, "Declaration" is one of the best CD's SCC has ever recorded. So, do yourself a favor - purchase both...You'll be glad you did.
Reviewer Way Off The Mark.......2005-12-14
OK, folks....I'm an SCC fan from a ways back and I don't understand why this album wouldn't deserve anything but 5 stars. "500 Miles" I could do without and I always skip over it, but that's the ONLY low point on this CD. This one never gets old. The thinking behind "11-6-64" is so smart and FLATTERING to his wife. Wouldn't all women love for a man to write about how our husband's life changed the day we were born? The fact that he's acknowledging God's purpose for marital love is refreshing. And the hauntingly beautiful "When Love Takes You In" (yes, I know it's a re-release) makes the entire CD worthwhile. My sister adopted a little boy from Russia and I plan on framing the lyrics for her for Christmas. Buy this CD, you won't be disappointed.
Steven Curtis Chapman, "All About Love" album.......2005-10-17
A caring album, genuine with varied styles of songs from upbeat "I'm Gonna Be (500 miles)" to slower songs like "When Love Takes You In". He is speaking from his heart either toward his love toward his wife or singing of the love of Jesus. I enjoy all the songs on the album, I do not skip any of them when listening to it.
Fair Project.......2005-09-24
This album cannot be compared with other SCC albums. I did not like it much. I couldn't get my ear to appreciate the songs. They were too noisy. "DECLARATION" and "SPEECHLESS" are a lot better albums than this one.
Nice gift to his wife.......2005-08-05
Steve Curtis Chapman's cd is a very nice celebration of marital love and his wife. It has some great catchy songs, but the last 1/4 is pretty bland.
The first and title song is a nice, danceable tune, and the remake of "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" is absolutely wonderful. "Echoes of Eden" sounded oddly familiar, until I realized that it was basically the same tune as "Take My Breath Away" from "Top Gun." I doubt he realized that.
Overall this is pleasant, both lyrically and musically, but not brilliant -- hence the 3 stars. I doubt it will be around in 50 years. Listen to samples or borrow it, and decide for yourself if you want to add it to your collection.

Customer Reviews:
Great compilation.......2002-05-10
I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.
A disappointment.......2001-12-15
There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

A Comic-Opera Treasure!.......2007-01-28
Dittersdorf is a sort of working-man's Mozart; in fact, this opera sounds similar to some of Mozart's early operas. But Mozart sought to break the rules and to explore new musical ideas; Dittersdorf is not an innovator...yet he is no less a master! This performance, too, is a materpiece of refined (not always!) comedy; the arias include some extremely difficult vocal leaps and trills, yet the primary joy is the witty verse. W.H. Auden (no less!) ramrodded this translation to English. And Anna Russell, famed for her "Analysis of Wagner's Ring Cycle" steals every scene she's in! Ad-libbing shamelessly, her introductory aria, all by itself, is worth more than the purchase price!
an obscure delight!.......2002-07-31
Eleanor Steber's image on the cover of this set caught my eye while rummaging through the cut-out bins of San Francisco on a recent opera whirlwind. What a lost treasure this performance is - recorded "LIVE" in NYC 1965! All the principles shine, their energy ebullient. Don't hesitate, buy it and smile before it disappears.

Smoothjazz.com Review.......2006-04-02
Ahhh, Lenny Welch... That silky smooth voice that has graced so many hits over the years including the classic, "Since I Feel For You." So wonderful to have a new release from one of the greatest R&B singers of all time. IT'S ALL ABOUT LOVE allows Lenny room to stretch out and sing his brand new, sensually romantic songs in an environment of Smooth Jazz, pop, and R&B. Backed by an A List of players including Smooth Jazz sax man Michael Lington and guitarist Grant Geisman. The talented singer can never be accused of resting on his laurels... In addition to touring all over the world performing throughout Europe, South America, the Virgin Islands and the U.S, Lenny has also been developing a new aspect to his performance skills, acting. His credits include several appearances on ABC's hit show, General Hospital. Plus, you have heard Lenny's distinctive voice on recent commercials for brands like M&M's, Subaru, and Coca Cola. IT'S ALL ABOUT LOVE is guaranteed to be well received by Smooth Jazz and R&B fans alike. With solid song writing (Ray Dahrouge), exceptional musicianship and Lenny's smooth and characteristic vocal styling... Favorite tracks include the sultry "Dancing Naked In The Dark," the album's first single, "Slow," the seductive groove, "Heaven Next To Me," (watch out Al Jarreau!), and the jazzy, high energy "No One's Gonna Do It Better Than Me." It really is all about Love on this exciting new outing from one of our nation's greatest singing treasures - We LOVE you Lenny! -Sandy Shore

Customer Reviews:
Lesley rocks!.......2005-09-03
My Mom introduced me to the joys of Ms. Gore, as she bought all her LP's in the 60's. The one I remembered most was, "All About Love" I still own these awsome LP's and then some. I have nothing but praise for these 2 magnificent collections. These two LP's are Les at her best. The sound is great (even on vinyl), and the covers are beautiful. I highly recommend this CD, you could not possibly be let down. Key tracks to listen for (for me at least), "A Girl In Love", "Before and After", "Any Other Girl", "Only Last Night", and my personal favourite, "I Don't Care". If you have the chance to grab up the BEAR box set, go for it, as there are countless joys to discover by Lesley that haven't made it to "2-fer" sets.
Lesley at her best.......2002-01-17
How ironic that 40 years after the fact, the world is finally figuring out that Lesley Gore is one of the most important girl singers in pop history and that her albums are treasure troves of intriguing songs intricately arranged and impeccably sung. Mercury's decision to market "the amazing 17-year-old" as a character out of a teen magazine proved both a stroke of genius and a terrible mistake. How was anyone serious to know that albums titled "Sings of Mixed-Up Hearts" or "Boys! Boys! Boys!" or "All About Love" were not about a hit or two and forgettable filler but track after track of rich, ahead-of-its time music. All that double-tracking on the early hits also made it seems as if Lesley had a small voice when the truth is she was always a vocal powerhouse. And, as "It's My Party" proved, she had incredible on-keyness, terrifically steady intonation far beyond the capabilities of most singers, an intriguing aftervibrato and the ability to literally sing anything. Her pronunciation also is remarkable--every word crisp and clear. Wow, what a talent and it's taken FOUR decades for people to wake up to it. Today Lesley is at the peak of her powers, looks terrific and still has that charismatic personality and set of brights that sets her so apart from run-of-the-mill performers. It's lovely to think that now at last she is getting the recognition she long deserved as an artist rather than just an unbelievably consistent hit maker (boy did she make the money for Mercury!). If you look at her chart history it's quite amazing. These two albums are her best and should not be missed.
Some of the best 60's records you probably never heard........2001-04-09
Everyone knows the hits. The amazing thing about Lesley Gore's albums was how much good stuff enveloped the singles. While most of her contemporaries, especially at Motown, loaded their albums with filler, Lesley, Quincy Jones, arranger Claus Ogerman (mostly) & co. lavished care on ALL tracks, as if they ALL were going to be the next single. And these two albums, while containing her lower charting hit singles, are definitely her best. And they're together on 1 CD. "My Town..." is her last full album with Quincy Jones at Mercury and contains Lesley's own song "A Girl in Love" with the smokey verses in a minor key (where Les does her own call and response--or maybe something deeper) that jump to a major for the chorus. Also here is Phil Spector's arranger Jack Nitzche, who turns "What am I Gonna Do With You" into a dense wall of sound classic (he was the song's original producer); "No Matter What You Do" is the hardest rocker she ever sang on, and Van McCoy's beautiful "Before and After" is given the definitive treatment here."...SINGS ALL ABOUT LOVE" is the album she made with producer Shelby Singleton, but its the unique arrangements by Alan Lorber that make this a classic. Is there a better Lesley Gore record than her own "I Won't Love You Anymore (Sorry)" ? With her ballsy vocal and Lorber's strings swirling behind her like a tornado, this 2 minute kiss-off is a beaut and was probably TOO good to be a major hit. Her sexiest song has got to be "Start the Party Again", while her raunchiest is the Valerie Simpson-Neil Ashford tune "I Just Can't Get Enough Of You", and dig that King Curtis-like sax break. In between are the gems "Only Last Night", "With Any Other Girl", "I Can Tell"(her last "girl-group" record), and the jazzy "We Know We're in Love". And how about what's done with Spector's "To Know Him Is To Love Him"? The sound quality here is very good as were the original Stereo pressings. And these peformances were all cut "live" in the studio, which give these recordings that extra zing!
It's Still Her Party.......2000-12-16
This collection of songs by Lesley Gore is a "must have" for her millions of fans! From her hit tune of "My Town My Guy and Me" to her terrific version of "Things We Did Last Summer" Lesley proves once again that she was one of the very best female vocalists to emerge from the 1960's. The CD collection also features "You Didn't Look Round" and "Just Let Me Dream" two Gore goodies that allow Lesley to really cut loose. Lesley was obviously never afraid to try new music styles, and this CD is a perfect example of that. Maybe more of her Mercury albums will be released on CD in the near future. MORE GORE!
Lesley Gore Sings For Girls in Love..........2000-12-15
1965 was a great year for Lesley Gore. She started the year winning nearly every music industry award for Best Female Vocalist, including Cash Box, Record World, Music Business and 16 magazines, and she was appearing on movie screens in three films, including the legendary live rock concert, "The TAMI Show." Her first edition of "Golden Hits" was a mainstay on the LP charts, and Mercury Records kept her busy in the studio when she was on hiatus from her sophomore year at Sarah Lawrence College. The first fruits of her Hollywood and New York recording sessions with Jack Nitzsche and Quincy Jones were found on the album from those dates, originally titled "Lesley Gore Sings for Girls in Love," but re-titled "My Town, My Guy and Me," when the single of the same name leapt into the top 40. "My Town, My Guy and Me" showed a maturing Lesley Gore at the crossroads, straddling girl group pop (Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry's sublime "What's A Girl Supposed to Do?"), standard Gore betrayl angst ("You Didn't Look 'Round" from "The TAMI Show")and runaway rage ("I Don't Care"). But the album also found her triumphantly belting solid West Coast Rock ("No Matter What You Do"), a Jackie DeShannon-Jack Nitzsche rhythm ballad with Barbara Lewis' name all over it ("Baby That's Me") and a trio of sophisticated uptown Brill Building gems, including the definitive version of Van McCoy's "Before and After." Gore's own "A Girl in Love" is another highlight of that set, which presaged her brilliant late 1965 single, "I Won't Love You Anymore (Sorry)," co-written with her brother, Michael Gore, and widely considered one of her classic tracks by rock historians. That single, produced by Shelby S. Singleton because Quincy Jones was scoring film in California, was featured on the second Gore album cut in 1965, "Lesley Gore Sings All About Love," which hit record stores the very last week of that year. In a series of New York City studio sessions, Lesley sang with the cream of Nashville musicians and Manhattan players, for this seamless, smooth collection that saw her step all the way out of the echo chamber and double-tracked vocal sound on every single song. She had been singing in nightclubs for a couple of years now, and the updated sound was as becoming as the new short haircut. The chart hits, "We Know We're in Love" and "Young Love" (#50 in the US, but top 10 in Canada and Australia), are the best-known cuts, but the incendiary "With Any Other Girl" and sexy "Only Last Night" are the real highlights. And Lesley's readings of Nat King Cole's "Too Young" and "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" are sheer vocal genius. Yes, Lesley Gore sang for girls in love in these two great 60s LPs, now on one CD, but thank God for us boys, we get to listen, too...

Album Description
"an absolute joy" - Music and Musicians Hi-Fi News and Record Review Record of the Month The sixteenth-century madrigal was an Italian form. The term `madrigal' was loosely applied to a wide variety of music, but generally denoted a polyphonic setting for four or more voices of an amorous or pastoral text which was closely depicted in the music. Thomas Morely transplanted the form into England in the 1590s; this marked the beginning of the brief but brilliant flowering of the English madrigal. Between the 1590s and the early 1620s, twenty composers published a total of 36 books of madrigals, after which the form virtually disappeared. Some of these composers, such as Morely and Weelkes, followed the Italian model closely; others, such as Byrd and Gibbons, mostly stayed with the simpler English form of the consort song, where the tune remains in one voice, word-painting is not used, and strophic form is preferred to the continuous structure of the madrigal proper. Among the twenty-one items selected for this recording there are examples of several types of piece,! ranging from true Italianate madrigals such as Too much I once lamented, via more popular `balletts' such as Fyer, fyer!, to the simple part-songs like A little pretty bonny lass. The variety, imagination, and inspired blending of poetry and music characteristic of the best of the `English Madrigal School' afford a particular kind of delight in performance, shared equally by singer and listener

Ron Raines does a fabulous job singing broadway songs. His voice is truly fantastic. He has a perfect voice for broadway songs and ballads. I think the song selection he chose is really wonderful and a great variety from different musicals. His first album was fantastic and so is this one. I'd highly recommend both albums. His voice is truly wonderful and a beautiful experience to listen to.
Ron Raines Continues His Beautiful singing.......2005-04-01
This is the second in Ron Raines series of Broadway Classics. It is just as beautiful as his first one. Close your eyes when you listen to him and you will believe that you are in a theater. You won't be disappointed if you like Broadway! The more I listen to Ron Raines sing, the better I like him. I hope he will make a new CD soon. He sings the songs that men sing in the original Broadway shows. It is great! This singer should be in everyone who likes music's collection
