Arriving [Enhanced]

Editorial Reviews
Steven Curtis Chapman
There have only been a few occasions when I'm captivated by a song on first listen. I've been a fan of Chris Tomlin for a long time but "Indescribable" stopped me in my tracks the first time I heard it. I believe there's something really special about this song and this album. Chris' new music gets me even more excited about our upcoming tour together with Casting Crowns. I can't wait to be a part of the worship experience with Chris night after night.

Album Description

Leaders make the indescribable visible. Isaiah's words, for instance, brought comfort to a defeated nation and transformed a people's imagination, empowering them to mount up with wings like eagles. Those words bear fruits today, capturing a post-modern visionary's heart, urging Chris Tomlin to call together God's people for life-renewing worship.

"I feel as though we're like this landing strip in the desert for our great, incredible God to arrive on; a way for Him to come into people's lives," Tomlin says of the album's metaphorical moniker inspired in part by Isaiah 40. Tomlin's third studio record and first in two years, Arriving demonstrates a Christian's glad surrender meeting God's welcoming arms.

Tomlin's undeniable energy is charismatic and contagious. Avoiding the trappings of public performance, Chris stands beside the people he serves, raising his voice to God with them so that they share God's presence together.

Credited with venerable church choruses such as "Forever," "We Fall Down," and "The Wonderful Cross," Tomlin is considered one of this era's top songwriters for the church with five songs in CCLI's Top 60 and four more in the service's Top 500. With millions singing his songs weekly, Chris is recognized as a pivotal voice of today's modern expression of Christian worship.

Arriving rocks with inspiring, guitar-driven pop melodies reflecting the roots traditions of Austin, Texas, where it was recorded and home to the church Tomlin co-founded, Austin Stone Community Church. The project's raw, straightforward lyrics are knotted tight with hooks as big and broad as the Lone Star state sky. Producer Ed Cash (Caedmon's Call, Kathy Mattea, Bebo Norman) brings his signature touch to the tracks, revealing that the talent pool is deeper than even the artist knew.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the Best Worship Album of All Time.......2007-06-07

If you look at the title of this review, you may think I'm joking. I'm not. Arriving might well be the best worship album ever made. The only albums that I can think of in this genre that even come close to this one are Illuminate, by The David Crowder Band, Beautiful News, by Matt Redman, Hiding Place, by Selah, and Not to Us, by Tomlin himself. Every song on this disk is amazing and has a powerful message to it. Not only that, but the mixing, producing, and sound quality of the album are excellent as well. Tomlin has become one of todays' best singer songwriters in my opinion, and what he has crafted here will and should go down in history. His love for The Lord is immediately evident on the first three tracks of the album, "Indescribable", "Holy is the Lord", and "How Great is Our God". These three tracks stand out and are easily accessable by anyone. They have become staple songs in my church's worship services. However, my personal favorites are "Mighty is the Power of the Cross", which just shows the beauty of Christ's sacrifice for us, and the best song "Unfailing Love" with Steven Curtis Chapman. This track just shows us how much He loves us and through his sacrifice is willing to do anything for us. Pure beauty. If you are a lover of God, and a lover of standout Worship music, don't miss Arriving, by Chris Tomlin.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favourites.......2007-05-15

Chris Tomlin is a truly gifted musician. I really enjoy listening to his music and love singing at the top of my lungs. This is a great CD. You'll be very glad to have it in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars He has Arrived.......2007-05-07

I play this cd all the time in my car. On a road trip with a friend, she loved it so much that the week we got home, she bought her own.

5 out of 5 stars all things well.......2007-04-24

When people complain about the shallowness of all modern worship music, they haven't heard Chris Tomlin. The singer has mastered Christian doxology that achieves true praise - the adoration of God rather than the introspection of self while one worships - by wedding language impregnated with biblical vocabulary to singable melody.

The 'worship wars' among which such achievements take their place suggest that Tomlin's is no small accomplishment.

ARRIVING focuses on the Lord's glory and its saturation of a world often too dim to understand that it's been filled. But not all are sightless:

'But rising up all around
Is the anthem of the Lord's renown
Together we sing
Let everyone sing:
Holy is the Lord God Almighty
The earth is filled with his glory'

Even with his focus on the Lord, Tomlin is able to express life here below, lived in the company of this Intimate Stranger:

'You have my heart and I am yours forever
You are my strength, God of grace and power
With everything you hold in your hand
Still you make time for me, I can't understand
Praise you God of earth and sky
How beautiful is your unfailing love
And you never change, God,
You remain the Holy One
And my Unfailing Love'

This is brilliant song-writing, rooted deep in biblical faith, understated in the performance arts, contagious to those with a penchant for singing along. ARRIVING could be a university curriculum for the How To Write a Song that People Can Actually Sing major. May its graduates multiply.

5 out of 5 stars Arriving.......2007-02-24

This CD is beautiful! The first cut is so anointed for worship. There are many that have now become familiar standards in contemporary worship. I highly reccomend this to anyone who likes Chris Tomlin. If you're unfamiliar with his work, you certainly will not be disappointed with this one!

4 out of 5 stars Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch..........2007-06-04

Frankly, I bought this album for the Song, "Valley Girl" which was a hit in the early 80's from Frank's daughter Moon! I had forgotten about his level of musicianship - that man had skills! Four stars!!

4 out of 5 stars Zappa got into a lot of unsuspecting teenagers' minds with this album...hehehehe.......2006-09-24

One of the greatest things about this album is that, thanks to the song Valley Girl, a lot of people who would never even think about owning a Zappa album bought one. So all the teenagers who really dug the Valley Girl song actually got to listen to 5 other great Zappa tracks. Granted, there's probably a few of them out there who played the album once, and never played it again. But they always say to themselves "what was that really long song on side two? I never heard anything like that. I can't get it out of my head! AARRGGHH!!!!" The stuff got inside their heads, and stayed there. I do rather like this album, especially the title track (the 12 minute one) and No Not Now. Envelopes is OK (I prefer the LSO version), and I do like Valley Girl.

5 out of 5 stars Zappa's best release.......2006-03-31

(of the four I have)
I can't say that I am a diehard Zappa fan, but I immensely enjoy this album. Frank Zappa is amazing at writing music.

The album:
No Not Now: Probably the worst on the album, but it is a good listen every once in a while (whenever I find the time to listen to the album all the way through). 3/5

Valley Girl: Frank Zappa's hit song. Insanely funny. I've heard that this song is where the term Valley Girl actually comes from. Wouldn't surprise me if Zappa had coined it. He was an extremely unique and influential guy. 5/5

I Come From Nowhere: The lyrics are decent (although the first stanza is excellent). The real star here is the music, which is excellent. 4.5/5

Drowning Witch: The star of the album. The lyrics are pretty good, but again, the music is what makes the song great. 5/5

Envelopes: Zappa can really write instrumentals. This is one of his best that I've heard so far. 5/5

Teen-Age Prostitute: A decent end to the album. It's kinda cute. 4/5

An excellent album put out by Zappa. 5/5

5 out of 5 stars Metallica Ten Years Before.......2004-12-15

I always wished Zappa could have kept the sound and intensity he achieved in "Ship Arriving Too Late ..." for at least one more record.

The first song, "No Not Now" has ridiculously stupid lyrics and an excellent blues/doo-wop melody straight from "Cruising with Ruben and the Jets" welded to an infectious hardcore popping bass riff.

Valley Girl has one of the most crushing bass and guitar parts heard then or ever in semi-popular music. because moon zappa's vocal is so funny and off the wall it is easy to forget contemplating the weirdness of this song charting in the top 40 at the end of the 1970s with such a heavy and grinding musical chassis.

There is a very surfy California sound to this entire album, part in the rhythm, the guitar sound, bass sound, the drum sound, and the lyrics. In some ways the sound and attitude reminds me of California bands like Agent Orange and the Minutemen and the Dead Kennedys. It's a light and carefree sound but also deceptively serious. Because Frank Zappa was practically a southern California native, a desert rat Army brat from deep in the Mojave, I like to think that he had this sound in his skin and bones and on Ship Arriving Too Late ... it just oozed out of his pores.

"I Come From Nowhere" has always been one of my favorite Zappa songs. It fuses some of Frank's most aggressive speed metal rhythm and solo guitar playing, an astoundingly tight rhythm section, a completely insane vocal delivery with lyrics that are as funny and disturbing as "Who Are the Brain Police?"

The opening section of Frank's guitar solo is as violent a piece of music as can be found anywhere and his guitar tone rips your head off. Patrick O'Hearn's astounding bass playing takes the song into a whole different category.

It would take nearly a decade, until Metallica, before music this intense, abrasive and highly structured found any audience.

Side two of Ship Arriving Too Late is a 17 minute medley that defies description. Typical of Frank during this period, it contains a continental plate collision of loosely improvised and difficult, highly rehearsed music all performed live, with Steve Vai all over it on some of the weirdest and hardest live guitar parts ever recorded. Scott Thunes on bass deserves huge accolades for anchoring this bizarre concoction, as does drummer Chad Wackerman. This type of stuff shouldn't work but I love it. Frank sarcastically named a bunch of live CDs "You Can't Do This on Stage Anymore" but hearing this stuff I think he was just telling the truth.

4 out of 5 stars "We're talking Lord God King BU-FU...".......2004-04-17

SATLTSADW is a short [34 min.] album introducing future-regular time-keepers Chad Wackerman and Scott Thunes; Wackerman plays drums throughout, and Thunes plays bass on four tracks. The album features both studio and live-material, and often both at once (yes, there are over-dubs). It's another album where Steve Vai is credited for "impossible guitar parts", which are performed in e.g. the instrumental composition "Envelopes", and in the heavy-metal-opera-like "Teen-Age Prostitute"; songs that give this album a lot of status, as does the guitar-solo on "Drowning Witch" - it proves that Zappa did right when deciding to keep this drummer and bassist together until the end of his rock'n'roll-band years.
Feminine voices dominate the album; Moon Zappa plays the part of the "Valley Girl" (a hilarious tune), and Lisa Popiel plays the part of the "Teen-Age Prostitute".
The album isn't a must, but is recommended to regular FZ fans, since it--with the exception of "Drowning Witch" and "Envelopes"--only features songs that cannot be heard on any other Zappa album. However, the versions of the two above mentioned tracks are here performed at their best.

5 out of 5 stars It stays with them..........2005-10-24

I enjoyed reading the reviews of parents whose kids have recently discovered "Classical Kids." I'm about to order the boxed set for my kids, ages 21, 19 and 16 because the nineteen-year-old, who has a college radio show and loves a wide variety of music, remembers this series (then only on cassette) with great affection and wants to hear them again. Those of you wondering whether it's worth it or not to try to introduce kids to classical music this way, be assured it works. We've turned one of Mr. Bach's lines into a family "saying:" "the more you study, the more you know; the more you know, the more you appreciate; the more you appreciate, the more you love." A great series!

5 out of 5 stars It all started with Beethoven.......2004-02-03

Many years ago I purchased my first CD in this series, "Beethoven Lives Upstairs." My children and I were delighted with it. I then discovered that there were more and searched them all out, one by one. My children, now 11, 9 & 5, have listened to these stories as they fall asleep for years. They each have a favorite composer and have gone on to learn more about them. These stories are a great introduction to some of our greatest composers. Not to mention a good intro to history, too!

Imagine my delight that they are now in one boxed set! Now when asked, I suggest this set. What a great way to get it ALL! I truly believe that by surrounding our children with a variety of good music (including POP music) and information they will grow up with a greater appreciation for music and the arts.

1 out of 5 stars Not What I expected.......2002-09-20

I love the idea, but I don't want to expose my children to the stories in these cd's. They contain children talking back to their parents, disrespectful language, sorcery, etc. If you don't like Harry Potter, you won't like these CD's.

5 out of 5 stars Music, history, culture, & intriguing story -Amazing!.......2002-04-08

My 6 year old son loves music...and stories! Here is the prefect combo. Lovely music of the composer accomapnies a fictional story which weaves the composer's life, the culture of his homeland as well as history...in an intriguing and fun way! Now, my son can pick out pieces he hears on the classical radio station. He really enjoys the stories and can tell people @ carnival in Venice, Italy and tidbits @ Beetoven and the Magic Flute by Mozart! A must for any child with any of these interests! We also have enjoyed the CD's and have learned lots!
I only can wonder...what took whomever so long to broaden our horizons in such a way! BRAVO!

5 out of 5 stars Great series, great collection.......2001-04-22

We've had the CDs in this boxed set for over a year now. The Classical Kids series has been wonderful. We have two boys (now 6 and 8) and this has been a great introduction to classical music. At first, the kids loved the stories which provide a sense of history and place and, ultimately, keep the kids interested in the entire CD. As they listened (time and time again), they started to pay more attention to the musical portions. Recently, we've been able to tell that they've picked up a sense of the music as we've listed to classical music on the car radio. Time and again, they perk up when listening to a piece of music and surprise us by saying "That's Beethoven". Sure enough - they've picked up something about the style of music that's characteristic of Beethoven. Sometimes it's the snippet of music from the CD and other times it's just the rhythms that are characteristic of that piece. As a family, we all recommend this.

4 out of 5 stars A fine overlooked Canterbury band.......2000-12-22

Gilgamesh was founded in the early 70s in England by keyboardist Alan Gowen. The band is generally considered a member of the "Canterbury" family of jazz-influenced progressive rock bands. Gilgamesh shares qualities with these groups, such as extended and obtuse yet warm instrumental passages. The fact that Gowen had auditioned for one of the most notable Canterbury bands, Hatfield and The North, reinforces the Canterbury connection. Ultimately, the liner notes tell the story of Gilgamesh as a frustrating one. Gowen wrote much music, which the band rehearsed frequently. However, it had a very difficult time attracting interest from booking agents and record companies, therefore, the public had few opportunities to discover this group. Judging by this collection of demos and miscellaneous recordings, it is a shame that this band was overlooked. Arriving Twice opens with the subtle and winsome "With Lady and Friend" from 1973. Following that is a seventeen minute long medley showcasing the band's capabilities. Although this track has tentative moments that cause the energy level to waver, it must be remembered that these sessions were not meant for public consumption. However, at its best the musical interplay recalls the aforementioned Hatfield and the North, who would have several live collaborations with Gilgamesh the following year. By the time the last four tracks were recorded in 1975, Gilgamesh had taken a great leap in terms of musical presence. The band sounds cohesive and confident; it had played a fair number of shows and live sessions on the BBC, and released an album. This momentum was not enough for some bandmembers, and Gilgamesh dissolved, though a late 70s project led by Gowen released an album under the Gilgamesh banner. Despite the occasionally rough quality of these recordings, this disc adds a welcome volume to the slim discography of a worthwhile forgotten band.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal!!!!!!! A welcome addition to the Gilgamesh canon.......2000-09-22

After all these years of just the two Gilgamesh albums (both out on CD, but at times difficult to find) it is wonderful and refreshing to hear (for all intents and purposes) "new" material.

The musicianship and compositions are just as striking as they have always been and even some of the compositions which did appear on their albums are (dare I say it) better here! "One End More / Phil's Little Dance / Worlds Of Zin" may be an example of this.

The liner notes are exceptional as well. A chronological history of the band as told through various long quotes by its members and associates.

This CD is a wonderful augmentation to the two previous releases from this seminal Canterbury band. Although it is a very satisfying listen, in hearing it, one can only wonder of the musical possibilities had Alan Gowan not died so young...

It really does slay me to hear this after all these years. The feeling is similar to me of that of the National Health "Missing Pieces" release from a few years back....years without anything new, and then all of a sudden, wow...same sound, same musicians, but "fresh" material.

If you've never heard the band before, then this CD is a fine place to start. I'm thrilled to have it. Thank you for releasing this....

3 out of 5 stars Classic Canterbury, but too formless.......2000-09-19

This album is made up of some '73 demos (which actually sound pretty good, liner-note protestations about sound quality notwithstanding) and some radio recordings from '74 and '75. (Oddly, the two '74 tracks are mono). The playing and musicianship are first rate. However: Dave Stewart pointed out that he left National Health at one point because Alan Gowen wanted the band to move in a more "free" direction. Hearing this, I can understand those protestations. The compositions are lacking in depth and complexity, with perhaps the exception of the title track, which is only 2 minutes long anyway.

I was previously familiar with Giulini's version of the ninth which is splendid. Great clarity of sound, lots of tension, and emphasis in all the right areas. I own 32 different versions of this work and this is in the top 5 of those recordings. Kempe's version of the sixth was a revelation. Imaginative and poetic. Best of all, you can't beat the price.

A horror film whose topicality is tied to the dot-com boom is asking for trouble, and sure enough William Malone's follow-on to House on Haunted Hill turned out to be something of a murky bust. But composer Nicholas Pike's smartly understated score certainly deserves a better hearing. Working from inspirations as diverse as brooding Russian classical motifs, the baroque, and 20th-century modernism, Pike serves up a subtle cocktail of creepiness. On the cues "Alistair Gets Cozy/Cozier," he playfully turns the horror-film clichés of creaking hinges, leaden footsteps, and squeaking doors into wry mini-concertos of dread. There are a few obligatory crashing crescendos, wailing choirs, and action cues in the composer's largely seamless melding of the orchestral and electronic, but overall it's a soundtrack that wisely relies more on spacious dynamics than on cheap jolts to paint its evocative soundscape of dread. --Jerry McCulley

        Album Description

DESA emerged from the wake of one of the East Bay's most influential punk/ska bands, Link 80. After six years of extensive touring and recording, 45,000+ records sold on Asian Man Records. 3 of Link 80's Members formed DESA , they joined forces with producer Michael Rosen (renowned for his work with Rancid, Metallica and Santana) and began working on songs for the new record. Honest lyrics, powerful melodies, and razor-sharp arrangements, the new album, Arriving Alive, was finished in April 2006 and will be released on MDB Records. Desa has been on tour since June 06- Aug 06 with RX Bandits

I saw this band with RX Bandits, they were so energetic and good live I bought their CD. I must say, it's a good one. The songs are catchy but they aren't buffed to perfection and the lyrics are interesting.
