In today's worship-crazed phase of Christian pop, Mercy Me fits right in with smooth melodies, passionate lyrics, and a vertical focus. Yet the transition from worship band to major-label act demands more. Almost There promises just enough to allow it to rise above its inconsistencies. Prayer of Jabez-inspired "Bless Me Indeed" is a glimmer of brilliance where the group brings it all together, but it's the poignancy and power of "I Can Only Imagine" that testifies to Mercy Me's great potential. The dramatic ballad captures a believer's hope for the afterlife and is fueled by Bart Millard's authoritative vocals. The song will continue to be a staple in church worship services for years to come. Then there are the not so brilliant moments, including the cheesy "House of God" and "All Fall Down." Weak moments aside, Almost There offers enough fireworks to make Mercy Me an act to watch. --Michael Lyttle

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-03-10

I love this CD. They have songs you never get tired of listening too. I also have their Spoken for CD along with Coming up to Breathe, personally I like their Spoken for Cd better than Coming up to breathe.

1 out of 5 stars Pitiful.......2007-02-03

I can imagine alot of re-borns swooning over this piece of trash as they faint while gibbering incomprehensible garblings.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-01-16

I bought this CD as a gift for a close friend and she loves it!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Almost There by Mercy Me.......2007-01-10

I loved this CD. I Can Only Imagine is a beautiful song that has touched everyone in my family. My kids ask to hear this CD everytime we are in the car.

5 out of 5 stars Never Knew Why It Took So Long.......2006-12-08

In the wake of Christian rock bands who are trying to extend their spiritual message in a secular way, perhaps to reach a new audience, Mercy Me continues to stand out and impress with their blatant and unhindered worship songs that fill the airwaves with the perfect words to honor God. I have not heard one song by Mercy Me that did not make me nod my head in agreement or shout out loud to glorify the Lord. Now I can't understand why it took me so long to find my way to songs that openly worship, as opposed to songs that send subtle messages to the public that they may never get without a little help.

Bart Millard has one of the most soothing yet uplifting voices in the business. It is hard to listen to only a few minutes of his voice and not want more. It is also great to know that the band's growing fame has never weakened their desire to honor God in everything they do. They will remain a role model for other bands who wish to worship without fear of ridicule or lack of popularity. As Mercy Me has shown, "...We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

5 out of 5 stars God's music uplifts the spirit.......2007-03-17

His special music uplifts the spirit - always and in all ways. This is a wonderful 2 disc set that surrounds us in a sacred atmosphere. Like a sprinkle of rain on a sunny day, the sampling of favorite hymns refreshes and enlivens the heart.

4 out of 5 stars nostalgia.......2007-03-08

My mother attended a church her whole life where these hymns were sung and played repeatedly until the music became inextricable from her life. She enjoys this collection immensely; however, it has a few shortcomings. Occasionally some of the hymns are short enough to seem a demo rather than a full-fledged track on the CD. Other times, however, the melodies and harmonies--if simple--engage the listener in a pleasurable experience.

If these hymns are a positive memory for you, you will likely not be disappointed by the offering here for its expansiveness if nothing else. In sum, it is recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The 50 Most Loved Hymns.......2007-01-12

They are the songs we grew up with and they just bring back such pleasure to your ears. Great sing along songs and worship and praise and its just wonderful music. All different artists and both albums are just nonstop and great music -- its definitely well worth it!!!

3 out of 5 stars nice music but not full-length.......2006-12-06

I was looking for a few good CDs of Christian hymns. This received strong reviews, so I bought it. The music is very good quality, not at all a class B production. The vocals are good, harmonious (though they can be a bit loud at a few parts) and the instruments sound great. However, one thing that no reviewer has mentioned is that the songs on these two CDs, all "50" of them, are not full-length. They only sing the first 1 or 2 verses to each song. Basically, they are 2 minute samples of the actual hymns, which is disappointing. I was hoping to learn the words to these songs and be able to sing them as I went about the day. I enjoy that the resources are available, but the case ought to explain these are not full hymns. If this does not bother you, then I would recommend these CDs for their quality. I hope this helps. God bless.

2 out of 5 stars Had Potential.......2006-11-10

The music on this CD sounds fantastic, but BE AWARE that they are only short segments of the hymns. For example, I specifically bought the CD for "Be Thou My Vision", which is actually only a short instrumental, and "Crown Him With Many Crowns", which only had one verse. Not good for a rousing sing-along while you do the dishes!

4 out of 5 stars A Contemporary twist on classic hymns.......2007-05-14

I saw this c d , and thought I would take a chance on it. and was pleasantly suprised. the songs stay prety much to there original melody.
This is one I'll enjoy just as much as I enjoy listening to the orginal hymans. It will give the younger genoration a feel for old treasures in an updated style that will not take away from the versions the older folks are used to singing.

5 out of 5 stars the old made new.......2007-05-09

i have to admit i've never been a big fan of hymns. they remind me of the days my parents forced me to sit through a sermon at church in a language i could barely understand. these days, i'm a youth leader at my church and i'm always on the lookout for ways my kids can take something spiritual into their daily lives. this is a great addition for their ipods! some of the most well known christian artists sing these hymns, updated but still reverent.

5 out of 5 stars Great compelation!.......2007-05-07

Great set of songs. Powerful lyric with powerful modern vocals. A great tool to get familar with old hymns and to get a new refreshing sound.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-03-28

This CD has an awesome mix of contemporary hymns. There are a few I don't care for but that is expected with any cd of various artists. I have to say my favorite song in the CD is Building 429's version of Grace Greater than My Sin. I would definitly recommend this cd to anyone.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars thank god for bands like mercy me.......2006-09-03

i think this album is great. i was reading alot of the other reviews and just had to write in response to some of them. i know we all hear music differently. some people seem to listen and hear mainly lyrics. i always hear the melody and the mix of the instuments. the lyrics for me are a bonus. with many of mercyme songs a huge bonus. now, that being said, not every song can be a hit. some of the other reviewers seem to think that every song should be a number one hit. that would be called selling out. let these bands write and perform from their hearts. there is a song on this cd entitled HERE WITH ME. the music in that song is as good as it gets. the chord structure is awesome. and when you add the extremely well thought out and meaningful lyrics to the music, you have a masterpiece, and that's what that song is to me. i couldn't believe that not one person mentioned this song in any of the reviews until the very last review which actually was the first. mike mcallister had mentioned that HERE WITH ME was his favorite song on the cd. i guess mike and i have something in common. thanks mike, maybe some day we can talk. as far as mercyme goes, i would highly recommend any and everything this band puts out. i feel bad for the people who will never experience bands like this. we are extremely lucky to experience MERCYME. also, the live dvd is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Undone is Unreal.......2006-01-27

I came to Undone after endlessly listening to their other cds in progression, all of which I would rate five stars. In spite of the fact that some of the best worship songs ever written can be found on some of their other cds, I think this is their absolute best as an overall album, with some equally powerful individual songs. The musicianship alone will thrill you, but the power in the lyrics brings you right into the worship experience. Bart Millard's awesome voice seems to get better and better. Each one of their cds is a different listening experience, and from these ears, growing in impact. I also saw them in concert this past summer. Do not miss them if you get the chance! As a contemporary worship and gospel guitarist, I am awed and humbled by the seamless creativity of the two guitarists on this cd. If I listed favorites, I'd end up listing all of them. Ok, my favorites at the moment are, "Here with Me," "Homesick," "Caught up in the Middle," and "Undone." Also, for the best "Christmas Album" ever, check out Mercy Me's "The Christmas Sessions."

5 out of 5 stars How cool is this?.......2006-01-15

I have probably listened to my Undone CD a hundred times. I love it. These guys are great. And how cool is this? I am reading an awesome book about putting Christ in charge of your life, and the author mentions Mercy Me. He seems to love them too. I think that's great that he gave them a plug in his book. The book by the way, is called Passenger's Side - Putting Jesus Christ in Charge of your Life. Author is John Forosisky. It's the most interesting/exciting Christian book I've read to date.

Well, if you are wondering if you'll like Undone, you will. Get it.
p.s. Almost There is great too!

Within the span of three releases, Jeremy Camp has quickly established himself as one of the powerful "voices" in Christian music. Since day one, Camp's powerful vocal presence has been enabled, in part, by his own strong songwriting and outstanding studio production. Restored follows along these lines offering a number of solid tracks that will no doubt continue to fuel Camp's ascension. The opening title track may be the strongest rocker on the release and a likely standout single with "Lay Down My Pride" a close second. The majority of the album features mid-tempo pop and softer ballads, casting a duller sonic pall over Camp's previous work. That's not to say this is unworthy of a good listen as "Take You Back," "Be The One," and "My Desire" are equally appealing. Ironically, Camp's best strength (powerhouse baritone voice) may be his biggest weakness on Restored. If there are any drawbacks here it may be Camp's limited range that, over the course of a full release, could make the listener a bit weary. Ultimately nothing here is earth shattering, it is yet another solid step of maturity for Camp and a release that will please his fans while making a few new ones in the process. --Michael Lyttle

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Oh my gosh!.......2007-05-21

Oh my gosh! This album makes me melt inside when I listen to it. Its so romantic towards God. Jeremy Camp really loves Jesus and you can feel it when you listen to this album. I listen to it at work, school and home. Its the only album I can agree on with my co-workers and and my family. The music is so beautiful and his voice is awsome. The lyics are unbelievable! Oh, it just reminds me of the relationship I want with God.

5 out of 5 stars I could listen to his voice all day..........2007-01-09

His voice is so beautiful, and his music is a mixture of almost a hard rock and Christian together. The Amazon Editorial Review does this CD no justice. His music, I think, surpasses the `Stay' CD. The tracks I like most are #2, 9 & 10, but almost all of these songs could be put on the radio instead of the select few they do.
It pumps the radio, the vocal chords, and the heart with the message he is singing about. Simply put, his music is simply wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars this CD is awesome..........2006-11-13

every single song is good, and I'm not one to normally say that. Most CDs I like 4-5 songs and even skip past the others...not this one. This guy is so gifted and the songs are so good both musically and lyrically. I didn't discover Jeremy Camp 'til a friend gave me his unplugged CD; don't listen to Christian radio so never heard of him. After I gave it a chance I realized his music goes right to the heart and speaks to me like almost nothing else. This is one of my all-time favorite CDs and I'm very picky.

5 out of 5 stars I'm so glad I stumbled upon this CD.......2006-09-28

I was at the Christian bookstore shoping for my wife and the front counter had this album on sale for $5. Not one who spends a lot of time listening to music I recognized the artist but none of the songs.

I'm so glad I picked it up.

Great lyrics focused on a surrendered life that recognizes God's provision and power. Just the kind of thing we need to remind ourselves of more often!

The truth of the words sung with catchy semi-rock melodies pull you in and allow the listener to close their eyes and just imagine releasing all to the Lord Almight.

The quality and sound of the music is top-notch, nothing hokey here. Great mixing.

The few times I've dished out money for a CD I've had a rule that I need to really like at least 3 of the 10 songs on a disc. I like REALLY like 10 of the 12 songs on this album.

I look forward to his newest release coming out October 2006. Thanks Jeremy for a great album that I actually use for worship.

4 out of 5 stars Even when I wrote my life away You still receive me!.......2006-06-29

Only slightly disappointed, I think I had my expectations for this CD too high. After LOVING "Stay" and "Carried Away," I was hoping this CD would once again raise the bar for Jeremy Camp. What I found instead is a satisfying album that doesn't seem to challenge him. It seems kind of safe. While there are excellent tracks (Take You Back, Even When, My Desire, Letting Go, This Man, and Lay Down My Pride), they seem to be sound similar in their style, whereas Camp has been known to incorporte different styles in his music (Lay Down My Pride is the only track that seems truly "rock," although "Restored" and "Breathe" are good midtempo songs). This album seems to be more radio-friendly for Camp, which I understand now that Camp has such popularity, he has more pressure to make songs that fit into the CCM mold. However, I am afraid that will begin to chip away at his individuality in the Christian market. Don't get me wrong. This is a 4+ album with moments of greatness. I just hope that the next album, Camp will mature into the truly great artist that he has the potential of becoming.

4 out of 5 stars Raise You Up!!!!!.......2007-03-12

It is hard to find compilations that give you more than a taste of the music you want. That is not the case with these CD's. It lifts my heart to hear older more traditional Hymns performed in this age of pop worship which I will admit has it's place. Any form of worship to the Lord is better than most of the degrading music on secular CD's, radio and TV. Not all of the renditions hit the bullseye but just hearing them done with the reverence they deserve is truly the reason I bought this set. Just the sheer number of Hymns is gratifying. Praise the Lord!!!

1 out of 5 stars Great on quantity small on quality.......2007-02-27

If you like traditional hymns and the majectic Mormon Tabernacle Choir sound. This is not it.

5 out of 5 stars If you want the Madacy collection of hymns, THIS is the CD set to buy.......2007-01-26

As best I can tell, Madacy first released the 3-CD box set entitled "100 Best Loved Hymns" in 2001, featuring various artists performing traditional classics. Since the original release, those same 100 tracks -- same singers, same musicians, same arrangements -- have been mixed and matched into so many other CDs that I keep uncovering them. Some or all of these original tracks have been used in different combinations to produce: "100 Hymns and Praise Classics" (4-CD box set), attributed to 'Various Artists'; "50 Hymns & Praise Favorites" (2-CD set) and "50 Hymns & Praises" (3 CDs), attributed to the Joslin Grove Choral Society; "A Treasury of Golden Hymns" and "50 Amazing Hymns", attributed to the Great Plains Chorale; and "Inspirations: 50 Best Loved Hymns", disingenuously attributed to Thomas Kinkade solely because he provided the cover art. All of these CDs are posted separately on the Amazon site.

Of all of those releases, this is one that has all 100 tracks. At the time of this writing, its cost is comparable to that of the releases that have fewer than the full 100 tracks. Thus, if you like the Madacy collection of classic hymns, this is the logical one to buy. (Suitable, and perhaps less expensive, alternatives are any one of the multiple releases of the 3-CD "100 Best Loved Hymns" box set, all of which have exactly the same tracks.)

Regarding the content of this oft-released, multi-titled, multi-attributed collection of tracks, the hymns are sung in traditional arrangements, often with a full choir accompanied by a piano or organ. Some are by soloists or smaller groups of singers, accompanied by a piano. If you're looking for a solid traditional presentation of these classics, you will probably not be disappointed. I would give the music 4 stars rather than 5 because some of this choral group's soloists on some tracks -- while good singers -- have voices that are perhaps not sufficiently smooth and mellow to allow them to come across well as soloists on a recording. However, I have boosted the rating to 5 stars for this particular box set because it is the full 100-track version, and I want to distinguish it from the 4-star ratings that I have given to the other releases having fewer than the full 100 tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful 100 Hymns & Priase songs .......2006-11-04

I would recommend this 100 Hymns & praise CD because it has all the classic favorite hymns that I like. It's a complete set and all of the songs were wonderful with beautiful vocals. I would highly Recommend it to anyone who likes traditional hymns. Some of the CD had similiar tone/instrument sounds and most of them are choir sung and not individual vocals but overall the songs were AWESOME! This set is great to Praise God at home or in the car!

1 out of 5 stars Road Rage.......2006-09-11

All I can say is don't listen to these CD's while driving in heavy traffic. You don't want to be trapped in a car with THE SOPRANO. At some point someone should have said, "OK Doris, back away from the Mic and let someone else have a chance." Maybe she's married to the producer. And let's talk about the automated-percussion. I don't know about you, but I don't really think "I Love to Tell the Story" needs a lot of cymbals, but that's just me. I came to anticipate each and every cymbal crash, and I was not disappointed. Amazon should put this in the 2 for $5.99 bin. Makes this Lutheran girl long for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

While the modern worship movement has revolutionized Christian music, lead worshippers realized that in their zeal to write cutting-edge church music they forgot the songs that were cutting that "edge" once upon a time. Add some creative contemporary arrangements and electricity to the originals and you have the composite that makes up the Ancient and Modern Hymns collection. For those who caught Passion artists singing some of these timeless classics during the 2003 tour, you know how emotionally moving they are live. Producer Nathan Nockels keeps that in mind and does a great job of capturing the live essence recorded in Atlanta's North Point Community Church. Of course no Passion release can be without David Crowder and Chris Tomlin and both give us some special moments on Hymns, including Crowder's "Doxology" and the magnificent "All Creatures Of Our God and King." Tomlin's reworking of "O Worship The King" and the compelling "Take My Life" are not to be outdone. Nockels and wife Christy (known as Watermark) also provide one of the finer moments with the elegant beauty of "Praise To The Lord the Almighty." Matt Redman and Charlie Hall fill out the release with a solid but unremarkable quality. --Michael Lyttle

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD, a great gift for anyone.......2007-01-10

The CD is great and came just as expected. Thanks for your great service and supply of a great product.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2006-08-18

This album is a refreshing mix of hymns with a twist. Passion does an excellent job in instrumenting the hymns: keeping dynamics both traditional and modern. Most of these hymns have new choruses or bridges added, which mostly augment the songs and lead the listener into deeper worship.

What I like most about this album is that there is room to reflect the lyrics of the hymns. When singing hymns in some churches, the organist can tend to just run through the hymns quickly without time for reflection or deeper worship. This dynamic Passion album often repeats lines, verses, or choruses and has musical interludes to allow the listener to participate instead of just listening.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but shy of awesome.......2006-05-09

I love the old hymns: so beautiful and inspiring. This album proves that some of the best hymns can be done in a contemporary style without destroying them, except for one: Chris Tomlin really butchered "All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name" in a big way. I dont claim to be a purest, but there really is no need for taking a wonderful hymn such as this and making it 'better' by jacking with the original melody (by simplifying it); he only robbed the hymn of its majesty and musical beauty. What a shame. On the other hand he did a wonderful job on "Take My Life"...maybe the best track on the album. Kudos to Watermark for "Praise Ye the Lord the Almighty" and "Fairest, Lord Jesus": they provide the paradigm for doing an old hymn in a contemporary style while preserving what makes the hymn great. The job they did makes the album worth it.

5 out of 5 stars A Bit of Heaven on Earth.......2006-03-30

In my top three favorites, this album brings worshippers together in a way that no recording I've heard has before. Nothing but the best of concerts can beat it for a taste of Heaven. It sends my spirit soaring. Filled with ancient hymns, which I have always loved, it does them in a way that is passionate and moving. Starting out with "O Worship The King," the emphasis is on worship. These songs are often sung with a low mummbling, or a cheesy, "listen to how great my voice is." Not so with this one. The artists, male and female, are gifted, and their voices are instruments lifting up the songs, not the other way around. Though the rockish beat that punctuates these hymns, and U2-like guitar bits, might disturb some of the most conservative worshippers, most worshippers, young and old would love it. Me? I'm hoping this begins a movement to bring back these meaningful hymns to places of worship. If the passion that their great lyrics evokes stands out more with a bit of guitar, all the better! The one complaint I do have is occasionally, twice that I recall, the artists do the "Yes Jesus, Lord, Father, yes yes, you are king" repeating that modern worship songs are often bogged down with. A small "price" for this glorious album.
Compare to "I'll Fly Away" Jars of Clay Or Bits of Newsboy worship albums.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-09

'The HYMN-a word derived from the Greek 'hymnos'-has been defined as 'a term of unknown origin applied from ancient times to a wide variety of songs in honor of gods, heroes or notable men.'
The founder of English hymnody is Isaac Watts (1674-1748), whose work in reforming congregational song texts culminated in the publication of his 'Hymns and Spiritual Songs' in 1707. Watts' collection was as complete and comprehensive a set of hymns as had ever been proposed for English worship and it raised the profile of the hymn sufficiently to overcome the prevailing psalmody. The great flowering period of English hymnody began with the work of the Methodist hymn-writers John Wesley (1703-1791) and his brother Charles (1707-1788). The Wesleys gave great prominence to hymns within their Methodist worship and published many books.
The modern hymn book is a collection of hymns drawn from various times and places. This most accomplished recording by St. Paul's Cathedral Choir presents 16 well-loved hymns from 'The New English Hymnal'. A great number of the hymns, which originate from many different eras and traditions, are given an extra musical dimension by John Scott's original descants and thrilling brass arrangements.
Over the years, I have found myself purchasing mostly the recordings of English choirs. They seem to have incredible vocal skills, perfectly executed phrases, flawless diction and some unidentifiable ingredient that makes them very appealing to hear. Of course, I personally enjoy the all male choirs sound; boy sopranos and male altos make the difference. This is a very appealing group of hymns!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Hymns for every one.......2002-12-01

As I have said already..I am from espiscopal church..these my songs are well know by me...these songs give encouragement when it seems that all hope is lost..these are tunes that are well received....they are also very simple for the every day person to gain strength from day to day..they will become your daily prayer.....

5 out of 5 stars Super Praise!.......2000-06-10

Praise The Lord offers the listener traditional hymns in the English/British tradition. the clarity of the voices make it possible for the listener to follow the words distinctly. The organ soars as accompaniment. the CD provides organ and choral quality for the novice and the experienced musician.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Spiritually Uplifting! Amen!.......2007-05-24

I have heard this artist at our church and that led me to this purchase. Totally Wonderful. 'Give Me Jesus' is a song I listen to everyday. Amen, brothers and sisters, Amen.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful time with the Lord! .......2006-09-01

I had the privilege to see this artist at Anne Graham Lotz' Just Give Me Jesus revival in New Orleans, where he led our worship...she said when she first heard his singing, she had to go prostrate before the Lord. I understand why! This CD of beautiful worship music is very special and wonderful..."Give Me Jesus" and "Jesus, King of Angels" bring tears to me everytime I listen...

3 out of 5 stars Great Performance, Bad Recording.......2005-09-24

I wish there were 2 ratings: 1 for artists' performance and the other the sonic quality of the CD recording. In the case of this CD by Fernando Ortega, I would rate the former at 5 stars while the sound quality of the recording is rated at 1 star (sounded too artificial and bad studio mixing) which marred my enjoyment of this otherwise great performance.

5 out of 5 stars Fernando Ortega's Hymns of Worship.......2005-09-08

This is a CD that we play daily because of the words and vocal quality of Mr Orgegs's voice. It is a superb recording for those who appreciate the "old" Hymns of the faith (and some that aren't so old). This is definitely a 5-Star recording.

5 out of 5 stars Edifying To All Who Will Listen.......2005-07-27

Thoughtful, worshipful music approved for just about all musical persuasions.

Fernando sings calmly and puts the listener in a contemplative mood. The CD will not disappoint those that need to just sit, relax, tune out the world around them and just focus on the Lord.

Favorite track is 'Jesus, King of Angels'.

This is a great CD I like listening to while studying the Word.

Highly recommended.
