Jesus Freak

Amazon.com essential recording
Jesus Freak, like the 1970s phrase that it's culled from, is an oddity. Who could have ever imagined such a wonderful blend of grunge rock, rap, melodic pop, and funk? "So Help Me God" sets the tone with a wicked guitar riff that draws boundaries for the trio's magic harmonies. "What If I Stumble?" and the vastly underrated "Between You and Me" allow Michael Tait to showcase his silky smooth vocals, while "Jesus Freak" and "Mind's Eye" prove the band can change speeds and rock as hard as anyone. For good measure, they even improve upon Charlie Peacock's "In the Light." One of the best Christian CDs of the '90s. --Michael Lyttle

The release of a new product by DC Talk into the marketplace is pretty much a major event. Any new product. It's been nearly three years since Free at Last first hit the streets, but every time an ancillary project like remixes, home video, the AVCD single, live concerts or whatever made the scene, DCT's fan base treated it like Holy Grail. The sneak-peek "Jesus Freak" single alone has sold well over 150,000 copies. Point is, this act's star has risen dramatically in the past three years, and... read more

Jesus Freak dc Talk.......2007-05-20
Hello. About this item. It's a good album, the one I would listen to more often.
Those were the days.......2007-05-19
I was reading this review that said something like, the sound of "Jesus Freak" is immature and un-evolved compared to the sound of the non-christian stuff out there. Well, I must say I agree. But wait, don't throw the stones yet, I'll explain.
Thing is, let's face the truth: the sub-industry called "The Christian Music Industry" is in fact about fifty years late, having truly started around the mid 80's. Of course there was a lot to find out, and in my opinion, Jesus Freak is one of the most relevant and emblematic records in the history of CCM. There is just so much experimentation, and despite it may actually be too much, it kind of feels like something was being created, and that is always refreshing. DC Talk, which started out as a rap band, started including more and more melodies in every new release, but it was Jesus Freak the one where they really made a huge turn, a turn which best feature is the increasing of Kevin Max's singing, a huge door to the exposure of this guy's awesome voice and talent.
Jesus Freak is a pretty weird mix of alternative rock, bubble-gum pop, folk, hip-hop and sometimes even a little techno. So as you can see, there isn't really an easy way to describe/define/review this album. I guess the only thing I could say for sure is, it's music you can't really read about to actually know something about it, you really just have to listen to it. There are almost no skip songs at all since pretty much every song has at least some sort of catchy hook to it, even if that's all it has to offer. I personally prefer the anonymous gems (What if I stumble?, What have we become, Mind's Eye) rather than the famous over-played pieces (Jesus Freak, Colored People, In the Light), but I guess in the end it's still enjoyable altogether. About the lyrics, well, I guess experimentation took place also in that department (for sure, some questions like 'What should we talk about?' had to be answered), for the lyrics are for the most part silly and superficial, with the exception of songs like "Mind's Eye", which still doesn't have great lyrics.
So back to the point I was trying to make at first. This record is what it is, an eclectic and colorful party of sounds that don't make a great album altogether but still have some great moments. By the time it was released, maybe it worked a little more than it does now, because listening to it today really gives away the fact that this sound is, to say the least, a little out of date. If some of us still enjoy listening to it from time to time, it probably has more to do with the love and nostalgia we feel for it than with anything else. Immature would be the perfect way to describe this and the CCM industry as well, but that doesn't take away any importance from this album.
One last thing to say: I think as songwriters, these guys really deserve recognition and kudos, at least back in these days, experimentation was the engine driving the production of "christian music". Today, even once-great bands like Third Day seem to have chosen the Steven Curtis Chapman sound because it works, and have stopped digging any deeper. Pity.
What will people think?.......2006-08-28
When I was in high school, my dad got me "Free at Last", and I'll be blunt: I hated it! Back then I was looking for something that would not only be good, but sound good, and I was a new Christian. A few years later after I'd graduated, my best friend told me he had the latest dc Talk, "Jesus Freak". And believe you, me, I was big time like... WHO CARES! He asked me to just give it a chance, and after listening to the title track, I WANTED IT! Today? I still love it!
Yeah, the song Jesus Freak was what caught my attention. But there was more than just the mere 1 song. They asked the haunting question in track 4 with What if I Stumble? and really gets you thinking. Then they keep the ears peeled with stuff such as Day by Day, or Mind's Eye. They really get the attention, as well as the thought process going with Colored People, yet humor you in the middle with Mrs. Morgan. For a band I hated in high school, it got rocking rather quickly, and pumped up the volume in quite a few places! dc Talk is still one of the most influential bands in the Christian industry today.
So, am I missing anything? Oh yeah, if you see a Track 13 listed, it's there. Just don't hit the stop button immediately, because just when you think it is over, you have a surprise in the end.
They ultimately ask the question we all should ask ourselves if we follow Christ. That question comes in the title track, Jesus Freak, and asks a very simple, yet pointed question. It simply says near the end, "What will people think? What will people do?" Hey, if you're afraid of being persecuted a little, then leave these men alone! What will people think? I could give a rip! Jesus Christ died for me, and He lives in me. Regardless of my stumbles, He is always there to pick me up. And He LIVES!!! Rock on, dc Talk!
Just a few little missteps..........2006-06-22
I own all of the DC talk CDs and this one is probaly my favorite. The only missteps are:Mrs.Morgan, and the Jesus freak reprise. My favorites are :so help me God,colored people,Jesus freak, what if i stumble, between you and me,like it,love it and need it,in the light, and mind's eye.I really recommend this!
best of..........2006-04-06
One of the best of all time. Every song is different and amazing. The recording quality is a tad rough, but that was the times. This is tied with Delirious's "World Service" for greatest Christian CD ever.

In a dc talk fan's opinion . . ........2007-01-25
First of all, I have to give it five stars because I am a hardcore dc talk fan. Can't help it, I just am that way. In light of the sound quality, style and remix content, it also deserves five stars.
HOWEVER, I must confess a slight disappointment. I had been looking forward to the 10th anniversary of Jesus Freak for a long time, especially after the 10th anniversary of Free At Last. Jesus Freak is the biggest Christian rock album of all time. No question about it. It revolutionized not just the Christian music industry, but the entire music industry as well. After all, Jesus Freak is one of the first albums to have blended rap with some hard guitars. So, in light of that thought, my shoulders shrunk a little bit when I found that the comemmoration to Jesus Freak would be only a 2-disc special edition with six new remixes. Now, the remixes are the best I've heard from any dc talk remix album (yes, that goes for Toby's remix albums of his two solo projects so far.) And if you are a hardcore dc talk fan and have bought all the singles, albums, remixes and so forth, the only music you haven't heard on this CD yet is the set of new remixes--and there's only six. (There's also the unreleased demo version of Mind's Eye featuring the "fourth member of dc talk," Mark Heimmerman.) Other than that, Jesus Freak (Gotee Bros. Freaked-Out Remix) has already been released; all the live performances have already been released; the instrumental version of In The Light has already been released.
But, of course, it's a must have for the dc talk fan. Still, though, a 2-disc edition doesn't do it justice. I mean, at least the 10th Anniversary of Free At Last had a feature film to go along with it!
As Good As It Gets.......2007-01-16
Like the original Jesus Freak album, the 10th Anniversary Special Edition is superb. I think that it may well be the greatest album in the history of rock music. At the very least, it is the best album in the annals of Christian rock.
This is a two disc collection. The first CD has the same contents as the original 'Jesus Freak' album. The sound quality is a bit better due to technological improvements presumably. Disc two contains several remixes of some of these songs. I personally don't like most of the remixes as well as the originals, but they are fun to have for a serious dc Talk fan. There is also a version of U2's '40' that I think is better than the original.
If you don't have the original 'Jesus Freak' album, I would say that this is a must have. If you do have it, this is still a good one to pick up just to enjoy some different takes on some of these songs.
Ten years and nothing's changed...well, it got better!!.......2007-01-07
I wasn't really old enough when the original came out to appreciate the musicallity and spirituality in this CD. Now, however, I'm blown away! I know that everybody always says that this was the CD that revolutionized contemporary Christian music, I was doubtful until I lisened to it.
The first disk is the original album, only it's been remastered to make it even better!! The second disk is remixes that will blow your mind away!! Some of them I think are a slight improvement on the original! The only track I don't like in the whole 2-disk set is the unreleased demp version of Mind's Eye, in my opinion there was a reason it was an unreleased demo version!
I bought this CD the day it came out and I lisened to it for about two weeks straight!
Yours truely,
Adam Swords (Christian music specialist)
Still one of the best.......2006-12-27
When this album came out in 1995 it really marked a change for dc Talk and Christian music as a whole. dc Talk "Jesus Freak", though they flirted with rock especially on the preceding album "Free at Last", marked a great blend of 90s alternative rock and R&B. Before this there weren't too many successful alt-rock Christian albums out there. The song "Jesus Freak" though with blatant Christian lyrics played on alternative radio stations across the country and the hit "Between You N Me", which is a song that deals with resolving conflict, was a pretty big hit in the secular market that I still hear played on alternative radio to this day. Another stand out dealing with race issues "Colored People" is a signature dc Talk song featured on this CD.
Most of you who are looking into getting this album probably have or have had the previous release from the 90s. I think you should consider buying this version. The sound is much crisper than it is on the 90s version and the bonus tracks/remixes are fun to listen to. I am really glad they included the hard to find remix of "Jesus Freak" that was found on the original "Jesus Freak" single. It is a hip hop mix which pretty much shows how the song "Jesus Freak" would have sounded if the song was recorded in their R&B days. As of this writing I haven't had the chance to read all the way thru the liner notes but from what I read it gives a fun/informative history of this historical album. It is also amazing that this album was recorded over 10 years ago and it still sounds current and fresh!
Hope this helps.
STILL THE GREATEST CD EVER!!.......2006-12-27
I bought it this morning. Only one copy and I paid $20.20 for it. So Help Me God remix is way cool cause the whole song the "ba-ba-ba-ba" is playing in the background over the lyrics. The remixes are all piano style but still sounds rock, it's wierd, cool, but super wierd. The reason those live songs and stuff are on there is cause there "out of print" so they through them on the cd. But hey the remastered version is well worth the money! It's SUPER LOUD NOW!

Almost Like A Parody.......2007-05-07
This album is a major disappointment for me.
Admittedly, I am a big dc Talk fan and I consider their album, 'Jesus Freak', to be among the best albums in Christian music and rock history. So, needless to say, I was hoping for something that would be a worthy tribute to that masterpiece album. This is not it, to say the least.
There are a few good songs on it. I think Relient K did a very interesting version of 'Between You and Me'. Others that are done quite well are the following: 'Day By Day' by House of Heroes, 'Like It, Love It, Need It' by Fighting Instinct, and 'In The Light' by Storyside B.
Several of the others were average. Although I really like Sarah Kelly's music, I don't think that even her version of 'What If I Stumble' is done well.
There are a couple of songs on here that are really poor. The track of 'Mind's Eye' and the second cut of 'Jesus Freak' are very substandard.
I'm sure that these artists meant well in performing this tribute, but it is not up to par. Some things are just so good that they should be left alone. Jesus Freak is one of those.
I would definitely not recommend this album. If one is interested in checking out a few of the better songs, I would recommend getting them on I Tunes or another digital music service. The song by Relient K would be worth getting that way.
Decent Christian Tribute.......2006-12-01
...but Chasing Victory's version of Jesus Freak murder this effort. It actually the only thing that keeps this review from being 5 stars. The song- no, that album was fine until they started screaming. Instead of rapping or at least an intrumental or something else.
But yeah. You could always take the cd out before it gets to that song and enjoy it. Because it's worth it.
It takes you back (more than anything...).......2006-10-25
Rewind back to 1995. Where were you? More importantly, where were you when DC Talk's Jesus Freak was all over Christian radio? Personally, I was in 6th grade and Christian music was as close to God as I could muster at the time. Its been over a decade and my how things have changed, but the lyrics still take you back. This is a great tribute album simply for the fact that you'll remember the first time around. Yes, the nostalgic fan will get the most out of this one. If you remember how cutting edge controversial the track "Jesus Freak" was back in '95 you can appreciate the radical spin Chasing Victory places on their rendition. Rounding out the tribute and nearly covering the rest of the musical spectrum are the tracks by Liquid and Sarah Kelly. Fans with a narrow tolerance for musical sound won't enjoy this Gotee tribute to DC Talk as more open minded listeners. If nostalgia is your thing you're safe with this purchase.
A great tribute to a great album!.......2006-09-17
Tribute albums: you either love `um or hate `um. I'm one of the prior. For me, a good cover means the performing artist takes a good piece of music and adds their own personal touches to it while respecting the original. A bad cover would be someone either playing it safe and doing it exactly like the original (thus showing no creativity), or ripping the song to pieces, throwing out the good, and then gluing it back together (showing they have no respect for the original.)
This particular album is a tribute to another album, Jesus Freak by dc Talk, one of the best rock albums of the 90s (period.) The thing about Jesus Freak is that the songs were wonderfully well written and produced, giving them a stay factor in a lot of people's minds as well as play lists.
Its a tough act to follow, so when I heard that Gotee was producing a tribute album, I knew they were going to have to make it REALLY good in order to please dcT fans. Now, when you have a tribute album, you're going to get a mixed bag. Thankfully, when picking up this album off the shelf and shoving it in there, I found that it was mostly not just good, but great.
Sticking true to the original track order of the original album was my first tip-off. There's even a hilarious nod to the phone message at the end of So Help Me God, thanks to Relient K.
But enough about the history here, let's look at the actual covers, shall we?
1. So Help Me God - Showdown
I've never heard of Showdown before, but I must say they take this opening song and tear through it like nobody's business. The crunched up guitars and harder hitting vocals actually improve this song. I just can't stop listening to it!
2. Colored People - Ayiesha Woods, John Reuben, The Gotee Brothers
While the urban sound does well for this song, this particular cover suffers from too many cooks. Or perhaps not enough John Reuben. Still mentionable, as its definitely not a low point on this record.
3. Jesus Freak - 4th Avenue Jones
Ah, the smash hit title track. Here, keeping true to the original wins out over originality. Sure, the lead is song by a female (she does quite well, too), and the rap is a little staggered with unusual breathing points (didn't anyone tell this guy how to breathe while rapping?) A good effort, but this version stays way close to the original to be the highlight the original was.
4. What If I Stumble? - Sarah Kelly
This is the first real low point of the album. This song practically gets slaughtered up until the end, when it starts to pick up and attempt to redeem itself. While I don't usually mind Sarah Kelly or her music, this effort just put me off.
5. Day By Day - House of Heroes
Okay, this is an absolutely splendid song. The original was great, but House of Heroes really outdid themselves here. Emphasizing the rock guitars and beat, these guys take a good song and make it awesome.
6. Mr. Tobin
7. Between You and Me - Relient K
At first, I didn't know what to think of this one, as the original was my personal favorite, and Relient K put such a different spin on it that it threw me the first time through. But it really grows on you, as Relient K somehow manages to emphases the sorrow of hurting another and the need to ask for forgiveness. This is what a great cover should be.
8. Like It, Love It, Need It - Fighting Instinct
Like House of Heroes before them, Fighting Instinct focuses on the rock aspect of this song, edging out the hip-hop bridge in favor of a fast paced rock out. A perfect fit for this one.
9. Jesus Freak (Reprise) - John Reuben and the Gotee Choir
Not one of my favorites, but Gotee gets points for including it.
10. In The Light - Storyside:B
Wonderful, simply wonderful. This cover sounds close to the original, but adds some high-pitched guitar picking, some good background harmonies, and rocks a little harder. I almost expected Charlie Peacock to show up at the end of this one.
11. What Have We Become? - Liquid
Much like Colored People, the urban influence is greatly apparent here, but this time pulled off quiet well by Liquid. The addition of piano and strings really adds to this song, as do the creepy choir during the chorus and tight harmonies. Well worth mentioning.
12. Mind's Eye - Family Force 5
Don't get me wrong, I love Family Force 5 and their style, and I'm sure there's some out there that will enjoy this screaming version of Mind's Eye, but for me it was an average attempt.
13. The Gotee Brother's Interlude
14. Between You and Me - Paul Wright, Ayiesha Woods
For those who weren't too keen on Relient K's version, we get treated to another! This version is much closer to the original in style, with Ayiesha's smooth vocals finding a much worthier home alongside the ever-pleasant Paul Wright. Definitely a highlight.
15. Jesus Freak - Chasing Victory
The second major low point on this otherwise wonderful album. While the first version on the album was okay, this cover finds itself suffering from multiple personalities. The music is much rocker and crunchier which isn't too bad, neither is the slithery singing during the first parts of the verses, or the rocking chorus. It's how the raps end up being screamed (or roared, as it were) that really kill this one. Sad that such a good album would end with this.
And so ends this review with four out of fives stars. dcTalk would be proud of these guys. Don't let the low points keep you away from this one, it's a worthy album!
Great CD.......2006-07-21
This CD is a great tribute to one of the best bands of my generation. The renditions these Gotee artists did is an awesome way to show the great things that DC Talk did. I bought the CD just today and I can't stop listening to it. I feel like I am 14 again listening to Jesus Freak all over again. If you want an awesome experience buy this CD and listen to the words of the songs.
