Thankful

Because they were raised in a churchgoing household and nourished with the sounds of such gospel legends as Commissioned and the Winans, it is no great mystery as to why Erica and Tina Atkins have become the sister-act duo of the hour. Their singing/songwriting is laden with a soulful confidence borne of supreme talent and a joyful testimony that springs from firsthand knowledge of God's redemptive goodness. Mary Mary found its genesis when the Atkins sisters met up with producer-songwriter Warryn Campbell. Their initial success in song publishing crested when Yolanda Adams recorded two of their songs on Mountain High... Valley Low. After this, it was just a matter of sorting out the best record deal. Thankful unites the dancing soul and the grateful heart. The blending of Erica and Tina's perfectly strung voices, and the finely crafted hip-hop/gospel flavor brings this genre to a new level. Celebration vibes in such songs as "Shackles (Praise You)" and "I Sings" stir images of packed-out dance floors bumping to the groove and lost in a swirl of colored lights. In contrast, a reflective side dives deep into the intimacies of following Jesus. The assured declaration of "Can't Give Up Now" and the tender beauty of "Be Happy" convey the heart of what keeps the Atkins sisters impassioned. One listen to this debut release makes it clear that Mary Mary has bypassed rookie status. This CD should come with a "Satisfaction Guaranteed" sticker. --Israel Button

Kelly Clarkson, the toothsome winner of Fox TV's first American Idol competition shows that her prime-time win was no fluke. She blithely skips through octaves and genres like a seasoned pro, belting out power ballads like hooky "Low" and the Diane Warren-penned "Some Kind of Miracle," with the aplomb of Pat Benatar in her prime. Clarkson tackles the neo-gospel "Anytime" without flinching, then shows some dirty street cred as she growls through "Miss Independent," a song she penned with Christina Aguilera. But Miss Independent would be a gross misnomer; despite the fact Clarkson co-wrote four of the album's tunes. Clarkson not only had uber record exec/executive producer Clive Davis at her disposal, but an arsenal of producers and songwriters to make sure she didn't make a creative misstep. Despite Clarkson's sublime vocal talents, excessive gloss at times overwhelms the quirky charm and personality she displayed on Idol. --Jaan Uhelszki

Overall, check out Breakaway and My December first, but also look into this one, because it definetely is a solid debut.
Just OK.......2007-06-28
Kelly Clarkson can hit the notes and do the typical vocal acrobatics but has hardly any depth to her tone and a very goaty, uncontrolled vibrato. She begins and ends phrases well but has trouble sustaining emotion in the middle of her phrases. Good beginnings, but I got tired of the CD after a few listenings.
Fortunately, she is improving and her second cd, Breakaway, seems to fix some of the vocal problems of her debut cd. We'll see if Breakaway stands the test of time...
Kelly Clarkson, Thankful.......2007-06-28
Kelly Clarkson is a great singer, she totally rocks on "Miss Independant"
and shows her much sought after talent on a variety of other styles of songs. I am very happy with the purchase of this CD. If you've heard any of her songs on the radio or t.v., you will enjoy it too.
Thankful for Breakaway.......2007-06-13
Kelly's debut album is thoroughly respectable. I'd give it a strong 3 stars, just doesn't quite have a 4-star feel. The album is like lite rock with R & B at times. Kelly's voice is the strong point of it. Notable songs:
Miss Independent - biggest radio hit. Has edge and attitude. Kelly sings the chorus line very powerfully.
Low - strong and emotional vocals
Beautiful Disaster - poignant, genuine feeling.
Just Missed the Train
Anytime - powerful song
If Kelly had released another album like this instead of Breakaway, she might well be fading like some other Idols. A very respectable start, but fortunately just the start. Waiting for more to come. Keep going, Kelly.
UGH.......2007-05-02
This album is just awful. "A Moment Like This" is clearly your everyday, generic, mushy gooshy, crappy love song.

Easy listening, beautiful harmonies and just enough gospel and praise that you know what kind of music you are listening to. Love these girls.
Mary Mary NOT YESTERDAY.......2007-03-08
I searched the website for Mary Mary song called Yesterday and this is what I got. Being new to ordering CD's online I did not see where I could check to make sure the song was on this CD and I did not feel A need to since I searched for the song that I wanted for my birthday. Well I got Thankful which is A CD that I got from my daughter when it came out years ago. I must say the CD arrived quickly and in good shape and when I contacted the seller they where very short spoken with me, I won't order from them ever again
Flawless Debut From the Atkins' Sisters.......2007-02-22
I loved this album from start to finish. This is an excellent debut and I think they have a promising future. I have their other efforts, but nothing tops this debut. The standout tracks are "Can't Give up Now", "What a Friend", "Joy", "I Sings", just the entire. I definitely recommend this album for anyone looking for good music.
Strong message and great sound.......2007-01-11
I have listened to a lot of Christian R&B, hip-hop, and gospely funk and Mary Mary remains on top. They are a solid group that touch on a diverse range of topics but maintain a consistently rich sound. One or two songs were a little too pop for my general taste, but their strong message made up for it. In addition, I work with an urban young women's youth group and Mary Mary is one of the only Christian groups that earned their respect in terms of beats.
Thankful - 4.5 stars.......2006-04-10
Mary Mary burst onto not only the inspirational but also the r&b music charts with their dynamic first single: SHACKLES (PRAISE YOU). This single captured my attention with its message regarding the need to praise God in times of strife as well as times of plenty and the bombastic beat obviously also caught the attention of those who may have only listened to r&b music exclusively.
This disc has stayed in almost constant rotation in my cd player because of the many inspirationally thought provoking songs which were excellently produced & sung.
To this day my favorite tracks are the aforementioned SHACKLES, ONE MINUTE, STILL MY CHILD, THANKFUL, WHAT A FRIEND, CAN'T GIVE UP NOW & GOOD TO ME (beautiful collabo with Destiny's Child).
If you're building a gospel, inspirational and/or contemporary christian music collection, then THIS cd must added to your collection (and at the current price, you won't be wasting your money in maiking this purchase!!).

BACK IN THE DAY!.......2007-05-11
THE SONGS ON THIS CD ARE JUST AS RELEVANT TODAY AS WHEN THEY WERE FIRST HEARD. WE STILL GET CAUGHT UP IN THE GROOVE TO "BE THANKFUL" WHENEVER WE HAVE FAMILY GATHERINGS. THE "KIDS", WHO ARE NOW IN THEIR THIRTIES, START SWAYING JUST LIKE US. I RECOMMEND THIS CD FOR PEOPLE WHO LOVE CLASSIC SOUL.
Be Thankful for What You Got.......2007-02-03
Finally, the original version of "Be Thankful." One of the first rip-offs that happened to me on Amazon was to buy an import album (CD) containing the song ($20+US). I found out the hard way that the song was a sort-of remix. It sucked - and I was totally mad. Well, my lesson learned was to patiently wait for this album to come out and get it at a good price. Five stars for a classy (soul) artist and his work!
Old soul.......2007-01-10
I'd been looking for one particular song, the title song for years. The rest of the album is interesting, but this song is the main reason I bought it.
Don't Get Me Wrong.......2004-03-13
but be thankful was the only song on this album that i was feeling. the story i heard about this song was that they used to have ads in the paper saying "come down to our studio and if we like your song we'll record it for $50". they liked be thankful and that's how it got cut. without a doubt one of my favorite songs of all time but i think that was all he had...
The Sound of Philly Meets The Sound of Curtis.......2001-06-07
As the story goes, on more than one occasion, when William DeVaughan's grooves would hit the air waves, people would actually start going into record stores asking the clerk, "Yeah, gimme that new Curtis Mayfield record they've been playing on the radio." - - The comparison goes without saying, and although DeVaughan did write and sing like Curtis, his songs stood out in their own right too - - in fact I believe the Impressions actually covered a few... all in all, this is a great mix of the Philly Sound (where most the tracks came out of) and the Curtom sound... and definitely, if you're a lover of sweet (but bumpin') soul, you can't get much better than that. (Favorite track by the way - - Give The Little Man a Great Big Hand, and You Gave Me A Brand New Start... though come to think of it, I like 'em all !) - - Hmmmm ,suddenly I'm in the mood for some Willie Hutch !

NEEDLESS.......2007-07-11
Every song on this CD is great, but there's no need for it to be released. "Chronicles" is a much better compilation. I won't speculate as to why this was even released, and I'm sure the company would offer a well-crafted statement in defense of it, but there was no need to release this, regardless. Get "Chroniles" instead.

Customer Reviews:
How can you call these "Hymns".......2006-08-05
Not to harp on anyone here, but it's obvious that none of you grew up in a church or environment that had a good choir. I know, a Hymn is a genre of music, but a recording of a hymn isn't one if it doesn't contain HARMONY. If they're a "choir," then why don't the tenors sing a different note than the sopranos, altos, and basses? The organist is quite good, I'll admit, but you're wasting your time if you're looking for a good recording of these beautiful songs that were COMPOSED with harmony, not unison. If they want to sing in unison like this, they need to be stripped of their "choir" status and simply be called a "group."
wonderful collection of magnificent music.......2006-01-18
Most everything on this CD is very well done. The recording environment might have been less than perfect, but that shouldn't dimish one's enjoyment very much. Most of the arrangements are very traditional, with the notable exception of Amazing Grace, which though it isn't terrible, it isn't very good either. Some songs had verses removed, which is understandable, though it was poorly done in Eternal Father, Strong to Save -- they did verse 1 ("Eternal Father"), then they skipped(!!!) verse 2 ("O Christ, the Lord") and went on to the final verses ("Holy Spirit" and "O Trinity") -- which is skipping Someone important! However, outside of that, it was excellent.
If you like sacred music, or hymns, then you'll thoroughly enjoy this CD. If you're a Christian, you should enjoy this as well, no matter your taste in music (and you might just learn to like hymns as well!). It is a well-chosen set of some of the most magnificent, God-honoring music of all time, done is a mostly very traditional manner, and it was done well.
Flawed but enjoyable.......2005-04-15
The huge size and reverberating acoustics of Washington National Cathedral make it difficult to hear any kind of live choral performance clearly, even if you're sitting in the front rows in the nave. The Cathedral Choral Society is handicapped by having to record in this acoustically mushy space, and it shows in this CD, often creating an uneven balance between the organ and the chorus as noted by other reviewers. The repertoire is well-chosen, but the quality of the arrangements is uneven. Too often, the chorus seems to be singing in unison right out of the Hymnal, like any parish church choir at an ordinary Sunday service. Certain pieces do suggest the heights which the Society is capable of attaining. But the group never achieves the splendor that the Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys displays every Sunday morning. Just when the Society seems to be getting there, the conductor pulls them back. And the shrill folk arrangement of "Amazing Grace" will have you covering your ears as the sopranos shriek clumsily, confusing volume with fervor.
Hymns through the Centuries.......2002-03-18
This is not a review. I just have a question. Does "Hymns through the Centuries" contain the hymn "It is Well with my Soul?" Thanks.
A must own for classic church music lovers.......2002-02-16
I purchased this CD just based on the titles and am very glad I did. There are only two downsides to the album. First is the fact that there isn't a companion CD with 26 more hymns! Second is picky, but I do agree with another rater that the organ could have been a little louder related to the singing. Hope you enjoy listening!

For right-minded buyers of the reissued Muppet Christmas Carol soundtrack, the odds of disappointment are about as remote as Miss Piggy's chances with Kermit. If you loved the movie, you will love the loopy mayhem of the Muppet Brass Buskers ("Good King Wenceslas"), the cartoonish malice of the black-hearted misanthropes Marley & Marley ("Marley & Marley"), and the hope-swollen harmonies of Tiny Tim and Family ("Bless Us All"), Muppeted here to hilariously humble effect. If, on the other hand, your interest in this disc has more to do with its inclusion in the way-narrow Christmas-record-for-kids category--if the spirit of the season doesn't extend, for you, to the magic of the Muppets--you may want to keep browsing, as it's a soundtrack first (overture, instrumentals, and all) and a Christmas CD second. That's not to suggest you're stuck with an un-fun disc should it land on your holiday stack without a prior screening, though. Miles Goodman's score sweeps and inspires, and certain tracks--"One More Sleep 'til Christmas" and "Fozziwig's Party"--are future classics. (Note to the right-minded: After a misstep on the original release, Martina McBride's version of "When Love is Gone" is back.) -Tammy La Gorce
Customer Reviews:
Finally released.......2007-05-23
If your Christmas isn't complete without listening to this music, this CD is a must buy. The audio quality is excellent despite the age of the film. Michael Cain and Belle come out crystal clear in their solo and ensemble work. The surprise of this album is the inclusion of two tracks (one by Beaker and Bunson and one by Scrogge's primary school teacher) that are not in the film. They are fun but unexpected. I could only ask that the CD last longer with such beautiful traditional music, but alas there is no more music to include. Maybe they could market Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island together in the future?
Good CD.......2007-02-14
My wife has been looking for this soundtrack for years. We were very happy to find it and get it so fast. This has some of the best music ever written for a movie.
the muppet christmas carol cd.......2007-01-19
Amazing the songs are so cleaver and i have bee waiting for this for a long time, it has been out of print great cd and the movie is so awesome!!
Holiday Classic with Kermit , Miss Piggy, and Michael Caine.......2007-01-12
The score from The Muppet Christmas Carol is full of the spirit of Christmas. The familiar story by Dicken's is given new life with the great score (mostly written by Paul Williams). Great energy is relayed to the listener as Scrooge (Michael Caine)is painted in words and as Bob Cratchet (Kermit the Frog) sings with his co-workers 'One More Sleep 'Til Christmas'. The love song duet between Scrooge (Michael Caine) and his fiancee during a ghostly vision brings great pathos to the character. For lovers of the Muppets and or Dickens, there is no better way to enter into the spirit of the season.
Awesome.......2007-01-08
These are some of the most heartwarming songs. I even find myself singing the ones about poor Mr. Scrooge.

Classical music for children has become a genre unto itself, founded on the premise of brain-power building and all too often steering parental buyers away from the full-blown versions of particular compositions toward reorchestrated renditions. It's frequently the case that a brain-tickling classical set will be played on digital keyboards, with softened tonal colors and shapes. Not so with this excellent Beethoven set. Recognized ensembles take up the music, from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center to the New York Chamber Symphony to the Oxford String Quartet and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. The emphasis is on Beethoven's gentler side, from the poetic "Für Elise" for solo piano to the bucolic settings portrayed in the two selections from Beethoven's Symphony No. 6. This is neither a synapse-popping set of virtuoso performances nor an altered look at Beethoven, but it is a well-selected, well-programmed set of works that will ease a child's brain into the works at hand. --Andrew Bartlett

Beautiful Music, Beautiful Renditions.......2003-12-14
This is lovely, soothing music suitable for babies or tired adults! I began listening to it and other "Baby Needs" CD's (the Guitar compilation is wonderful too) before my daughter was born, and have continued to play it for her ever since. Even Classical music purists shouldn't object to hearing just portions of major works-- the compensation is having a complete collection of calm, peaceful music. Highly recommended.
Soothing Music for Baby.......2000-11-05
This is a delightful collection of Beethoven's most soothing, melodic pieces. It is good for background music or for quieting a fussy or tired baby. I highly recommend it.

"I Only Hope I'm Standing Here When Heaven Finally Comes to Call".......2007-04-06
With a completely sharp, gorgeous set of lyrics from Taupin and a rapturous, heart tugging melody from Sir Elton, "All That I'm Allowed" is a completely underrated composition that has only been treated as an of-its-time album track, already dropped from concert setlists now that Elton has moved on to another album. However, its pointedly autobiographical lyrics and message of profound gratitude makes it not only a sharp listen on CD but the ideal song to be heard live.
"And I've got all that I'm allowed/It'll do for me, I'm thankful now/The walls get higher every day/The barriers get in the way/But I see hope in every cloud/And I'm thankful, so thankful/I'm thankful, I've got all that I'm allowed/I've always tried to make things clear/Then I watched as progress stalled/I only hope I'm standing here/When heaven finally comes to call."
Leftover tracks that miss inclusion on Elton's LPs are usually excluded not because of quality but because of non-adherence to theme or variation in musical style. As such, "Keep It a Mystery" certainly adds clout to this single.
Taupin's lyrics are dark, detailed and completely inspired, and Elton extracts all the emotion out of them to craft another engrossing melody. The mix of his piano and electric guitars creates an atypical blend here, especially when an upbeat harmonica buoys the melody. Fittingly, he sings, "It's strangely compelling, and I can't resist."
"I want to hide, I want to watch/I want to draw back the blinds and be caught/I want to hang on every word/I want to know that my breathing was heard/'Cause I want to see that mystery in me/And I want to sleep with the secrets that you keep/I want to wake with the magic you make/Running up and down my spine like when a fault line shakes."
Indeed, this single provides yet another enhancement to the awesome "Peachtree Road" album. Major fans will be glad to have this in their collection.
An Unsolved Mystery.......2005-08-04
"All That I'm Allowed (I'm Thankful)" is an uplifting ballad with strong vocals and tasteful musical backing. After all the success and excesses of the past few decades, Elton is rightfully thankful to still be alive and making music.
The non-album track "Keep It A Mystery" is a power ballad that boasts strong vocals, solid piano playing, and a tuneful instrumental break that features interplay between an acoustic and electric guitar. The lyrics celebrate the mysterious nature of love.
"'Cause I want to see that mystery in me.
And I want to sleep with the secrets that you keep.
I want to wake with the magic that you make,
Running up and down my spine like when a fault line shakes.
Keep it a mystery, a mystery for me.
Keep it a mystery, a mystery for me."
The real mystery is why this superb song was left off the "Peachtree Road" album.
Maybe All I Should Be Allowed.......2005-02-26
I really have enjoyed Elton John's great songs for quite a long time. Nevertheless, there is always one track that falls just under the middle of the road in his longtime career. His track, All That I'm Allowed, the second single from his 2004 record Peachtree Road, is a very soulful song that really sings out very well for awhile. Afterwards, it just loses its luster. The song is alright for those who enjoy Elton's adult contemporary side, but others might just want to consider ignoring this track and go with other Elton John greats. Some may feel that it is in that direction, but others might go the opposite way. Listen to the track in whole from Peachtree Road, and decide for all that you want allowed.
