The Best of Sixpence None the Richer

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
It may seem curious to the casual music observer that Texas-based pop band Sixpence None The Richer, who had one big hit in "Kiss Me" and one semi-hit with their version of the La’s "There She Goes" would have enough material to release a greatest hits collection in full album form as opposed to, say, an EP. While both tracks are included here ("Kiss Me", in fact, shows up twice), other songs culled from the band's archive, as well as contributions from assorted compilations, provide plenty more listening pleasure for Sixpence fans as Leigh Nash's sleepy vocals complement catchy hook-driven melodies in slickly produced studio arrangements. Some of the brighter spots on the record are actually covers of other artists' greatest hits that force Sixpence None The Richer out of their comfort zone and into more intriguing territory, such as on Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over" and ABBA's "Dancing Queen". Three previously unreleased songs are also included. --John Moe

5 out of 5 stars greatest hits.......2007-03-20

It might be worth just buying their albums one by one as most of the songs are good and you wouldn't want to buy this and then double back later. Matt's guitarwork has the power to make me happy no matter what, it's articulated so well. The vocals are very smooth and pretty and fun. The guitar in "us" can stay in my head for days. There's so much more than kiss me, these people know what their doing, no "one hit wonder".

4 out of 5 stars A pretty voice.......2007-03-11

I love this CD. Though I am not a regular buyer of pop groups I couldn't help but get this one.
I listen to it when I get a tad grumpy and it brings me back to a happy place. Her voice is so pretty it couldn't do anything else.
Love all the covers.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST of Sixpence Non the Richer.......2007-03-09

Leigh Nash has just an amazing voice. You'll enjoy this Best Of!

5 out of 5 stars Very good CD, I recommend it to any serious Pop music collector!.......2007-01-04

This CD has a "catch": the surprisingly beautiful voice of Leigh Nash.

I am usually reluctant to hits covers, but in this case I would suggest to give a special try to SNTR performance of The La's "There She Goes", Crowded House's superhit "Don't Dream It's Over", and even Abba's "Dancing Queen". Special mention to that wonderful tune titled "Kiss Me". Leigh Nash's voice reinvents these songs and provides a new dimension to the meaning of "Cover version".

Believe me... this CD is a serious improvement for your music collection!

4 out of 5 stars A Fine Compilation!.......2006-11-10

Six Pence None the Richer only recorded four regular albums before they disbanded around 2004. This compilation covers their whole career and features all their biggest hits as well as rarities and previously unreleased tracks.

From their commercial breakthrough third album the two great singles "Kiss Me" and "There She Goes Again" are logical choices, but also a few of the strongest album-tracks also would have been nice inclusions.

It's almost the same with their equally strong final album, where the two hit-singles "Breathe Your Name" and the outstanding cover of Neil Finn's "Don't Dream it's Over" are featured along with the fine acoustic album track "Melody of You".

A few tracks come from hard to find soundtracks etc. and among these their cover of Brian Wilson's "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times" stand out. Compared to the Beach Boys' own Pet Sounds version, which I always found sounded slightly unfinished, this new version is by far the strongest.

Also "The Ground You Shook" and "I Need Love" are great non-album tracks that any fan of the band would like to have.

I'm not familiar with their first two albums, but judges from the tracks included hear the second album "This Beautiful Mess" seems to have a harder approach than their other records.

A fine compilation, though I would have preferred the Japanese version of "Kiss Me" exchanged with one or two of their fine album tracks.

2 out of 5 stars A bit of background..........2003-01-11

Quite a few fans have posted negative reviews of this compilation, and they're right. Although a number of Sixpence's stellar tracks made it onto the disc, it's mostly a tired collection of stuff-found-on-old-comps.

R.E.X. records, Sixpence's former label, kept the band in hellish limbo for three years after a nasty bankruptcy. Unable to escape their contract, but lacking the funds to produce or market a new CD, Sixpence languished for years between This Beautiful Mess and their self-titled release. Veteran artist Steve Taylor eventually bought their contract from REX's husk, fronted the money to record their self-titled release, and helped produce the CD.

Of course, REX still owns the rights to Sixpence's older songs -- and when they jumped into the national spotlight with Kiss Me, REX decided to cash in. A quick compilation of older (Owned-by-REX) songs was thrown together and marketed as 'Collage,' hoping to snag new fans looking for older material. They even misspelled the title of the band's earlier single, Angeltread, on the track listing. Sigh.

If you like Sixpence, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of This Beautiful Mess. Collage is nothing more than a sad attempt to cash in.

1 out of 5 stars Not a Pretty Picture.......2000-11-24

Like many, I bought the eponymous album for "Kiss Me". That album was very different to the taster track, yet well worth coming back to.

This, on the other hand, is dreadful. There are a few good songs in there, but in the context of the others there it is just tiring to listen to virtually anything. The recordings are not top notch, and the sound quality varies noticably between tracks. This is what mastering houses were made for.

Nothing sounds like "Kiss Me", and nothing matches the quality of the album it comes from.

Highlight: "Love Salvation and the Fear of Death (REMIX)"

Lowlight: The Album

DISSAPPOINTING. AVOID.

1 out of 5 stars Not For Me.......2000-08-24

This collection does not appeal to me. I don't like the shrill shrieking on some of the tunes. This is just not for me.

2 out of 5 stars Collage A Poor Sampling Of Indie Sixpence.......2000-07-19

It is much more advisable for new Sixpence listners to buy Sixpence's first two albums, THIS BEAUTIFUL MESS and THE FATHERLESS AND THE WIDOW than this hastily thrown together collection. Missing from this "portrait" are Sixpence classics like "Trust" and "Meaningless," a song the band still plays live at epic length. The artwork is second-rate and goes against the artistic nature of a band. Avoid COLLAGE unless you just can't afford both of Sixpence's early CD's. One positive thing I will mention about COLLAGE is that whoever selected the tracks for the album (and it was not the band) had the forsight to pick the best songs from the TICKETS FOR A PRAYER WHEEL EP It is still unforgivable that the same care was not taken in selecting LP tracks. It sounds as if the compilers of the album tried to find as many "Kiss Me" clones as they could in Sixpence's back catalog.

5 out of 5 stars Finally.......2000-02-28

Thank you Sixpence. Great music! Especially for my two daughters. It's good to know that good musicians with good hearts are on the air waves. Our culture needs more and more of you, and I will continue to pray for that. Well done!
