Wow #1s: 31 of the Greatest Christian Music Hits Ever
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Here we have the ultimate artifact from the bestselling Wow series: Wow #1s: 31 of the Greatest Christian Music Hits Ever. This collection does have some great anthems, but they're the kind of tunes that anyone who's given even a cursory listen to Christian pop radio in the 90s or 00s has heard dozens of times by now. It's hard not to see this release as the result of a zeal on the part of the Wow organization to reduce contemporary Christian music to the sort of bite-sized, sales-driven, best of the best mentality that fuels so much of secular consumer culture. For the most part, the result is a blanched and overproduced mess: very little of the music remotely urban or exciting, almost all of it overly sentimental. Rather than a hearty meal, it's like eating a cake made entirely of frosting. Many if not most of the artists themselves are talented, of course, and if even one more listener can get turned on to the highly personal rock of Rich Mullins or the sublime, beyond-diva-level vocalizings of Nicole C. Mullen, that's never a bad thing. --Mike McGonigal

I love this CD.......2007-07-12
I love this series of cds. My favorite in this set is the "pink" cd, which seems to be a little edgier. Even my hubby will listen.
Great.......2007-06-13
I love it!! I have just started listening to Christian music again and this is full of uplifting songs.
GREAT!.......2007-05-14
Songs are super and inspirational. All artists are great except Natalie Grant, who I personally don't care for! Other than that---exceptional CD!
Great Contemporary Christian Songs.......2007-05-13
Bought for my son. He loves it! This is the fourth year in a row he has asked for the WOW Hits! They are all great.
Great collection!.......2007-04-25
This 2 cd set is a great collection of Christian music. CD 1 has excellent tracks...most of which are heard on KLOVE radio. CD 2 has a lot of "non-mainstream" Christian tracks which are pretty good. Out of the last 4 years of these, this one is the best!

The WOW Gospel 2007 collection is much in the same vein of previous releases: Disc One features the best of more traditional acts while Disc Two spotlights newer talent and approaches. And much like its predecessors, the 2007 package has plenty of great music. Hang on, because the release kicks off quickly with Donald Lawrence and the Tri-City Singers from their farewell concert with "The Blessing of Abraham," a live-wire effort if there ever was one. It's followed by the delightful bossa nova-tinged "Psalm 68 (Let Our God Arise)" from Kurt Carr, a master at blending musical styles. Karen Clark Sheard - the baby of the famed Clark Sisters - comes through strong with the beautiful "You Showed Me." Another highlight is Keith Wonderboy Johnson & the Spiritual Voices with "I Made It," a celebratory statement. Johnson has a unique arrangement style and a voice somewhat reminiscent of Dobie Gray. Disc Two starts off with fireworks from hitmakers Mary Mary doing "The Real Party (Trevon's Birthday)," a raise-the-roof chant spiced up with a sassy horn section. The great Yolanda Adams won't be denied with her "Victory," a proclamation of saving faith and deliverance. Other delightful highlights include Israel & New Breed's uplifting "Turn It Around" and Deitrick Haddon's convincing "Heaven Knows." And who would have imagined Nicole Mullen teaming up with 70s funkster Bootsy Collins? The duo's "Message for Ya" is guaranteed to bring a smile and a spring to your step. --Michael Lyttle

The album opens with the Stellar award wining group Donald Lawrence Presents The Tri-City Singers-The Blessing Of Abraham, what an opener! The album feature tracks from the following artists Kurt Carr, Hezekiah Walker & LFC, Myron Butler & Levi; The McClurkin Project, Karen Clark Sheard; Tye Tribbett featuring Kim Burrell, DeWayne Woods, . Darrel Petties & Strength In Praise, Keith Wonderboy Johnson & The Spiritual Voices, LaShun Pace, Donnie McClurkin, The Mighty Clouds Of Joy with the track Order My Steps , Byron Cage, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Mary Mary, Yolanda Adams, Kenny Lattimore & Chanté, Moore, Israel & New Breed, Smokie Norful, Nicole C. Mullen featuring Bootsy Collins, Men Of Standard featuring "Baby Dubb", Martha Munizzi, Kierra KiKi Sheard, J Moss, George Huff, Deitrick Haddon, Dave Hollister, V3 with the track Love Makes The World Beautiful , Ramsey Lewis featuring Darius Brooks, Kelly Price.
This album will make any gospel music novice a veteran over night because it features most of the Gospel Greats. The only thing that lets this album down is that there are STILL no UK artists featured. Why I most ask? The amazing SOE, IDMC, The Blessed Man, LCGC, Ekklesia would have complimented this album immensely. We pray that WOW 2008 will feature some UK arts. This is still highly recommended because it an outstanding value.

Great.......2007-06-13
I love it!! I am just staring to listen to Christian music again and this is a great collection of uplifting songs.
WAY TO ROCKY!!!!!!.......2007-05-11
Since this had a 5 star rating I thought that I would buy it and that they would be wonderful CD's to add to my collection. Boy was I ever wrong. Out of a total of about 30 songs I only liked about three. If you don't like the EXTREME rock/rap beat then I would NOT recommend buying these CD's. Some of the songs were so loud with the beat you couldn't understand the words and sometimes you couldn't even hear the words. I don't believe that this is what God called music or praise.
WOW 2006 review.......2007-03-25
I love the first CD in this album. I cannot seem to get enough of it. The second CD contains edgier music that does not appeal to me. The lyrics on both CD's are great, however, and I recommend this album to everyone. It would make a great gift for anyone who likes Christian music and wants to grow spiritually.
Great blend on Contemporary Christian music.......2007-03-12
This album has the hottest Contemporary Christian Music. I Love listening to this album. If you love Contemporary Christian music then this album is a must have.
A Great Collection.......2007-03-05
The WOW collections are a great way to pick up a good mixture of some of the year's best Christian songs. This album is no exception.
Although I already had about half of the songs on this CD, I decided to go ahead and get it. That was not a mistake.
There are some absolutely terrific songs on this CD by Casting Crowns, Jeremy Camp, and Kutless. In addition, there are many more that I would rate as four star songs. There are no bad songs in this collection.
One real treat for me is 'Atmosphere'. It is a TobyMac song that features dcTalk, so it is essentially a dcTalk song. As their 'Intermission' has been far too long for my liking, this is a good way to get a rarity these days: a new dcTalk tune.
You really can't go wrong with this double CD collection. Buy it and enjoy.

New Christian?.......2007-03-17
Not sure what CD from what artist? WOW CD's are an excellent place to start your Christian music library. It provides a broad overview of Christian music so you can hone in on a style or artist that suits you. Christian music has come a long way toward a contemporary sound. My passengers don't even realize it is Christian music until they start singing along.
EXCELLENT by BJ.......2007-03-16
The first thought that comes to my mind when I think of this two-disc collection is one word - WOW! (How appropriate.)
We start off on Disc 1 with Steven Curtis Chapman, who's won so many awards and sold so many albums that I almost faint when I hear his accomplishments. This #1, "Dive", is an extremely catchy song. I can't remember the first time I heard it (maybe at a skating rink years back?), but I just know that I've known it for a long time. Excellent song.
Next we have Nichole Nordmeman, who I think is a little bit overrated. Of course she's decent on songs like "Brave" and such, but I have better female singers in my church praise team! "Holy" is definitely a worship song, talking about falling on your knees and singing "holy". Not the best, but good.
Up next comes one of my dad's favorites of all time, Mercyme's "I Can Only Imagine". This song will just make you want to shout because you're so happy! It's a constant reminder that one day we will be going to a better place with Jesus. Incredible vocals--WOW!
Track 4 features BackStreet Boy member Brian Littrell. I was certainly surprised when my sister told me one day that he was coming out with a Christian CD, because I didn't think he was a Christian! However, "In Christ Alone" (formerly done by Michael English... I THINK!) shows off Brian's voice talent--soothing to the soul. The words are amazing.
Next comes FFH's "One Of These Days". This song is pretty good--a catchy one, at least. I'm not that familiar with this group, but I think everybody will like this song.
"Big Enough" from Chris Rice is next, and unfortunately is one that is not my favorite at all. It's just seems boring to me, and his voice doesn't work for me. I've heard some of his songs before, and honestly, they're OK, but this one is dull and makes me wonder how it ever became a #1 hit.
Amy Grant is the next artist on this disc, with her song "Lead Me On". The beginning starts a little strange at first, but then transforms into a faster chorus. The tune is great, and I was very surprised when I found myself singing this one all day. Great job, Amy!
Next in the lineup is my sister's favorite male artist of all time--Mr. Michael W. Smith (sometimes referred to as "Smitty"). His song, "Place In This World", is one of my favorites for this disc. I enjoy his voice very much and thought this song was a definite highlight. Excellent work.
Point Of Grace's "Gather At The River" is next. This is probably the only song I've heard of this all-girl group, but after hearing this song, it seems they're pretty good. Their voices blend perfectly, an ingredient that helped make this song a good one.
"Redeemer" from vocal powerhouse Nicole C. Mullen is an incredible song! It talks about how Jesus has risen and how he lives today, and how he is with us every minute of every day--FANTASTIC WORK!
Next comes my FAVORITE ARTIST OF ALL TIME (YEA!) Everyone please give it up for... AVALON! This quartet is fantastic, and on this album they show off their biggest smash, "Testify To Love". I think this song was the most-played song of the 90s (I THINK!) Anyway, I still love it, and think everyone should give it a listen to.
Anyway, I think you get the picture: this WOW rocks!! All the other artists like Rachael Lampa, Mark Shultz, Jars Of Clay, Newsboys, DC Talk, and more are all incredible.
EXCELLENT WORK--HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
EVERYTHING I HOPED IT WOULD BE.......2007-01-30
the music selection on this cd is even better than i could have done on my own. an excellent collection!
The Best of All Time?.......2006-12-17
Don't you think it's overstating the facts a bit to call these the GREATEST Christian music hits EVER? To be sure, there are some great songs here, but the collection only covers a 10 or 15 year time span (with a couple of important exceptions), when the history of contemporary Christian music dates back to well over 30 years ago. Where's 2nd Chapter of Acts, Keith Green, Sandi Patti, The Winans, Twila Paris, Bryan Duncan, or any of the true pioneers of contemporary Christian music? They deserve to have representation on a CD that touts iself to represent the greatest music in the HISTORY of the contemporary Christian genre.
Great CD - YAY JESUS!.......2006-09-29
Whenever I'm feeling out of place, I always pop this into my CD player and it puts me right back in line with all the other sheep. Bless you WOW!

WOW Worship: Aqua.......2007-07-07
This entire albumn is spiritually uplifting....and a total worship cd. It is awesome! I have copied the words of a few songs to send to America's deployed servicemen and women around the world. I wish I could send the albumn to each of them so they could hear the music! Our church sings nearly every one of the songs on this albumn! And I love the different styles of the individual artists.....Agnus Dei (Worthy is the Lamb) by Third Day is almost a Rock style that I love and I am not a fan of Rock music! Which only goes to show that God can be praised in any form of music! Hope, joy, love, praise are all harmonized in this cd. I love it!
Love WOW worship.......2007-06-27
I love all the WoW worship CD's including this one. You get 2 CD's with 16-17 songs on each CD. These are the most well known worship songs by the original artists. Can't get better worship music than this.
WOW getting better.......2007-06-10
I've bought WOW CDs in the past and they were all good. This one has more songs that I love to hear over & over again!
Awesome Worship CD.......2007-01-15
If you love modern worship songs from some of the best artist than this cd is the best. It has everything.
Excellent listening.......2007-01-11
This CD is a great CD. I have listened to other worship CD's and this is by far the best I have heard.

From a pure-pleasure standpoint, the first Beethoven's Wig was nothing to flip over, and the second disc in the series follows suit. However, that is not to say that this is not a valuable and possibly ingenious record. Those unfamiliar with the premise will quickly get the picture: Producer/writer/lead singer/chief clever guy Richard Perlmutter gathers a bundle of important classical works (Paganini's "Violin Concerto #2," Strauss' "Blue Danube Waltz") and makes up silly, catchy lyrics to lay over them, informing the listener about the piece or its composer. Standing out for their offbeat brilliance this time are "Dvorak the Czechoslovak" ("Humoresque #7," Dvorak) and "Wow What a Wedding Cake" (Wedding March from A Midsummer Night's Dream, Mendelssohn). Few stabs at mixing education with entertainment succeed so well. As a bonus, the second half of the CD repeats the symphonies straight up, presenting a neat opportunity to quiz kids 5-12 on what and who they've just heard. --Tammy La Gorce
Customer Reviews:
Greatest baby gift ever.......2007-03-15
Both of my grandchildren (and their parents and grandparents) are hooked on this CD and all of the silliness and beauty it brings into our lives. We sing to it, dance to it, and find ourselves thinking about it at odd times. Who can't love singing Verdi VERY LOUD? I've now started giving this as a simple baby gift, especially to those with older siblings. They are already equipped with clothing and nursery gear, and Beethoven's Wig invites the whole family to gather round...even if it is just on short car rides.
Great for the whole family.......2007-01-04
My husband, 18 month old daughter and I all love this CD. It's a staple in the car. One caveat- these lyrics will get stuck in your head and I now find myself singing the "words" to these songs when I hear them in a store or commercial! I'm hoping this means my daughter will recognize these songs as she gets older.
More Great Fun.......2006-03-13
Like the first volume, this CD encourages young children to enjoy classical music. The silly lyrics sometimes impart factual information on the composer or the piece. There are 11 sing-along symphonies and then the 11 symphonies are replayed without the lyrics--total of 22 tracks. Booklet with lyrics and trivia is included. All our children (aged 2-12) enjoy this CD, as do we.
One is better but this is still awesome!! Gotta have it!.......2006-01-10
My children loved Beethovens Wig 1. I checked this one out at the library. Then, we decided we had to have this one too.
Yes, one is the best but 2 is still wonderful.
Save yourself the shipping and order both at the same time.
We all thoroughly enjoy it. My 4 yr old can name these classicals when he hears them elsewhere and he can hum these beautiful songs. Much better than kiddie rhymes and Disney jingles. Culture your children the funniest way!!
Absolute joy, and endless fun!.......2005-11-15
The tunes and word stay with you and before you know it, you are signing them along. My two kids (ages 9 and 7) ask me to put the CD on as soon as we get into the car. What a wonderful and fun way to get them to love classical music!

A Contemporary twist on classic hymns.......2007-05-14
I saw this c d , and thought I would take a chance on it. and was pleasantly suprised. the songs stay prety much to there original melody.
This is one I'll enjoy just as much as I enjoy listening to the orginal hymans. It will give the younger genoration a feel for old treasures in an updated style that will not take away from the versions the older folks are used to singing.
the old made new.......2007-05-09
i have to admit i've never been a big fan of hymns. they remind me of the days my parents forced me to sit through a sermon at church in a language i could barely understand. these days, i'm a youth leader at my church and i'm always on the lookout for ways my kids can take something spiritual into their daily lives. this is a great addition for their ipods! some of the most well known christian artists sing these hymns, updated but still reverent.
Great compelation!.......2007-05-07
Great set of songs. Powerful lyric with powerful modern vocals. A great tool to get familar with old hymns and to get a new refreshing sound.
Great CD.......2007-03-28
This CD has an awesome mix of contemporary hymns. There are a few I don't care for but that is expected with any cd of various artists. I have to say my favorite song in the CD is Building 429's version of Grace Greater than My Sin. I would definitly recommend this cd to anyone.

Ferguson Returns.......2007-06-01
This album reminds me of the live performances I attended when I was in college a long time ago. It was great to relive these experiences. The Kenton orchestra tracks were particularly good. I thought I had lost the "Hot Canary", since I had it originally on 78. Nothing plays them anymore. I recommend this trip down memory lane.Wow! The Formative Years
Awesome collection!.......2007-05-13
I've been collecting MF recordings for about 35 years... and this really is a great compilation of the Best of Maynard's Early Years. This is the stuff that won him Downbeat Awards and made him a "name" performer while still in his 20's.
The CD is well recorded, there's nothing glaringly bad as far as levels/mixing go. For vintage recordings (late 40's and 50's) these are well recorded and hold up well both from a technical and musical standpoint.
I had all but one of these tunes in my collection... but it's nice to have them all in one place on CD instead of hunting through all my old vinyl!
If you're a MF fan - or a trumpet player who wants to hear what the fuss is all about - come hear The World's Greatest Trumpet Man as he was at the beginning of his career!
wow the formative years by Maynard Ferguson.......2007-03-31
Definitive early recordings of "The Boss". Well recorded and packaged. Good addition to your Maynard collection.
Essential.......2007-03-15
This is an essential CD for Maynard Ferguson enthusiasts who do not own many examples of his work from the late 40s and early 50s or have not heard many of these early cuts. His remarkable youthful precision will be especially revelatory for those who are primarily familiar with Ferguson from his final years touring as an elder statesman with Big Bop Nouveau. While the disk is inexpensive, the sound quality is good to excellent, with the understandable exception of the first two radio transcription cuts.
Ferguson moved to the United States in 1949 and initially played with the bands of Boyd Raeburn, Jimmy Dorsey and Charlie Barnet - just as the age of the big band was passing. While there are no studio recordings from his tenure with Raeburn or Dorsey, this CD contains a couple of tracks from a live radio broadcast with Dorsey in New York during March of 1949.
The third track is Ferguson's notorious feature with the Charlie Barnet band on "All the Things You Are". This disjoint and decidedly unsentimental recording enraged Jerome Kern's widow, leading to a lawsuit threat that resulted in the record being withdrawn from sale by Capitol Records. For those that have grown used to Ferguson's flamboyant style, it does not seem as extreme as it may have in the fall of 1949, although it is still quite a hoot to listen to.
Ferguson was destined to play with Stan Kenton and the only impediment was that Kenton had temporarily disbanded when Ferguson made his move to the U.S. Ferguson finally joined Kenton when he formed the Innovations Orchestra in 1950 and Kenton featured Ferguson prominently on a number of recordings (most already out on CD). This CD contains three tracks with Kenton, the eponymously named "Maynard Ferguson" (with the Innovations Orchestra) and two cuts with the "regular" Kenton band, "Hot Canary" and "What's New". There are four cuts from 1950 recorded with Ferguson listed as leader of an orchestra comprised of Kenton sidemen - and given the quality, apparently dubbed from vinyl. There are also two cuts from 1952: an odd small-group date with Ben Webster and an orchestra cut featuring his first wife, Kay Brown, on vocals.
Ferguson left Kenton in 1953 to become a studio player for Paramount Pictures. While his contract limited his live performance opportunities, he still recorded quite regularly as a leader and sideman. The middle of this CD includes seven tracks from 1954-1956. There are a number of CDs available with additional material from this period.
The CD concludes, appropriately, with five tracks from the Birdland Dreamband, which Ferguson was tapped to lead in 1956 when he left Paramount. This aggregation would form Ferguson's core performing unit until the mid 60s, when he left the inhospitable musical climes of America for Europe and India. While the mature Ferguson would occasionally pull out charts from his early years, his second career would be based on more rock-influenced charts and a more fluid playing style to match.
It is nice to see Ferguson's early- and mid-career work finally coming out on CD, ironically just as the CD is heading into technological obsolescence. Nevertheless, even for those who have moved into the iPod age, the price is right and the screaming is timeless. Wow, indeed.
Still unbelievable.......2007-02-28
Oh, my...even after hearing the incomparable Maynard Ferguson on dozens of recordings over the years, the sheer virtuosity of his playing continues to astound me. I know that most, if not all, of the sides on this LP have already been available on CD - and the quality of some of the recordings is subpar. But the gifts that Maynard possessed, even as a very young man, were nothing short of otherworldly, and this collection showcases the early years nicely. If for nothing else but Maynard's remarkable "All the Things You Are", his restrained and lovely take on "Over the Rainbow", and, of course, "Maynard Ferguson", this disc is absolutely essential for any MF fan. Buy it now.

Customer Reviews:
This album is way better than the film..........2007-02-03
Since the first review focused on what they didn't know about the bands, I'll point out some of the acts:
Tre Lux is Tina Root of Switchblade Symphony, one of the biggest Dark Wave bands of the 90's.
Shiny Toy Guns are huge right now, just played Leno a month ago.
Collide are one of the bigger bands of the goth/electro scene.
Bow Wow Wow...even the other reviewer knew who they are.
Sparklemotion had a hit on itunes from the Napoleon Dynamite Sountrack.
New Skin are a new English band produced by one of the guys who produced Depeche Mode and the Cure.
but whatever - the point is the album is really good - there's only one song I wasn't crazy about and for a soundtrack, that's saying a lot.
I can't say the same for the film...but oh well.
Yet Another 80's Mostly Lame New Wave Cover Song Collection by Mostly Unknowns.......2007-01-28
I get the impression that cover song collections are quite the rage in Hollywood Movie circles when dealing with 'troubled' movie productions. It's cheap in that all the artists cannot command any upfront cash for their appearance. It smacks of indy-cred to get these artists, mostly electro-goth types, together. Too bad most of the cover versions are only mildly interesting. I also suspect that the soundtrack CD will be of more interest in a years time than the movie will...Why the producers of the film decided to so radically transform the book into a forced-copy of 'Underworld' escapes me, I guess filming for so cheap in Eastern Europe was the main reason. Too bad, I really enjoyed the book. Buy the book instead of buying this CD or watching the movie.
Except for Bow Wow Wow (glad to see they are struggling along still, but this IS DEFINITELY NOT their best work), almost all of these bands are probably unknown to 99.99% of the listening public. I have heard of Collide before this, kinda synthy darkwave band, very enjoyable, please go buy their other work ;) Almost of these songs lack the excitement and punch of the originals, why bother then making effort? I guess if I must, the first three songs are pleasant enough to listen to and I kind of like the Collide number as well...The rest can be safely deleted if you decide to convert these tracks to MP3s and just keep the aforementioned four tracks.

Great CD.......2007-01-10
Bought this for one song - In Christ Alone - but they are all great! Would recommend this CD!
good variety of music.......2005-04-05
I love these two cds and believe anyone of any age would enjoy them. They are terrific contemporary worship songs that point our minds to God. My favorite songs are "All in all" by nichole nordeman, "In Christ alone" by geoff moore and Adreinne Liesching, and "Your Love, O Lord" by Third day. There were a couple songs I didn't really care for like Out of Eden's version of "Every Move I Make", "Let Everything That Has Breath" performed by Matt Redman (I like the original version done by Cademan's Call on the City on a Hill cd much better.), and "The Happy Song" by by Delirious. They are not horrible songs though. All the songs sounded up to date, no 80's sounding stuff. If you are looking for great pop worship songs that aren't too loud but not too quiet and boring either, then this is the cd for you.
WOW WORSHIP: YELLOW.......2005-01-22
I love every song on this CD. The songs are uplifting and familiar. This is one CD you can play over and over again.
The WOW albums are great because . . . . . . . . . . .......2005-01-19
What makes these compilations so great is that the songs ARE NOT always performed by the original artist or songwriter. The reason this is so special is because you get to hear other artists take on a song that makes it almost it's own new song. An example of this would be ZOE Girl's version of "Jesus, Lover Of My Soul" from WOW Red. The song by itself is great, but then ZOE Girl's version adds tons of power and depth. Another great thing about the WOW series is that when the original artist does perform, they may do a modified version of the song that you cannot get anywhere else. An example of this is "Draw Me Close " from the Katinas on WOW Yellow or Chris Tomlin & Steven Curtis Chapman doing " We Fall Down" from WOW Red. I love hearing different artists sing the same praise songs because they bring a different flavor and vibe to the song. The WOW series are worth every penny and THE BEST praise & worship music around!
Awesome.......2005-01-19
These two Cd's are wonderful. You can feel the Holy Spirit in each song, it brought me to tears. I felt the presence of the Lord. It is amazing the dedication of these brothers and sisters in Christ how they devote there vocals to God. I recommed this Album to everyone.
