40 Acres

Confident after four No. 1 singles and a 1998 Dove Award for Modern/Alternative Album of the Year, Caedmon's Call are back with more coffeehouse rock and brilliant songwriting on 40 Acres. This seven-piece ensemble has made a name for itself, not only with chart success, but with its hook-laden acoustic pop and extensive college-circuit touring. The tightness shows with their smooth rhythms, layered guitars, and evocative vocals. The first single, "There You Go," is pleasant enough, but dig deeper with such thoughtful gems as "Faith My Eyes," "Somewhere North," and the moving "Table for Two." "Daring Daylight Escape" kicks up a country-rock storm from the Pure Prairie League/Poco vein. Songwriters Aaron Tate and Derek Webb are two of the brightest hopes in contemporary Christian music's future. --Michael Lyttle

5 out of 5 stars Not Just great CCM but great MUSIC!.......2006-08-06

As a long term reformed Christian, I had pretty much gotten to where I felt virtually all CCM music was just second rate bands that couldn't get a contract without trading on the "religious" label. My favorite modern religious song had always been Eric Clapton's "Presence of the Lord". But then I read an article about the resurgance of Calvinism amoungst Christian youth and a few CCM rock bands and decided to try Caedmon's Call. I was pleasantly shocked. Derek Webb and company have managed to pull off the difficult task of bringing reformed theology into a modern context. I can't thank you guys enough. So far everything I've heard is first rate. Along with Jars of Clay, Derek Webb and Caedmon's Call are the best of what will hopefully be a coming flood of Christian alternative rock. I love it. Thank you!

This album is incredible! "Somewhere North of Here" is one of Derek Webb's best songs. Awesome!

4 out of 5 stars Another gem of a CD.......2005-07-21

Many reviewers have stated that '40 Acres' is Caedmon's Call best album release to date from all their previous albums. These reviewers aren't that far from the mark. This contemporary Christian soft rock/pop group brings togethet their faith as well as compelling odes to God and their own faith in humanity and God's destiny in his creations. This 7 person group is simply invigorating in today's age, where many bands sing about sex drugs and getting high...this group sings about 'having faith in each other', 'giving love a chance' and 'giving God our faith and a chance to see his wonders'. This is truly morose and yet uplifting music that is a pleasure to listen too. The duo singers are a husband/wife ensemble and they both sing with a clarity of desire in sending forth their words of faith. The songs on this album are designed to make the listener think about his/her's place in our world and how we treat each other is viewed and observed by God and his son. The best songs on this amazing album is 'Shifting Sand', 'Where I Began', 'Somewhere North' and finally 'Petrified Heart'.

5 out of 5 stars Rock Solid.......2005-02-18

This was my first introduction to Caedmon's Call. Wow, what an experience. Such a wonderful blend of style and unique sounds. After that I began snatching up all their other CD's and going to a couple of their concerts. I absolutely love their style, and their powerful lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars A SOLID RELEASE!.......2004-12-01

Caedmon's Call are one of the most successful overtly Christian pop groups, and this is their strongest album. It captures the energy of their live shows, it is produced wonderfully, and several vocalists get a chance to shine. On the album, the band walks a fine line between coffee-house mellow acoustics and college-radio type rock. Many of their lyrics, although very religious, are ambiguous enough that Caedmon's appeals to a secular (non-Christian)listener as well. The album's most impressive aspect is not the vocals or the lyrics (although they are all very strong). It's the instrumentation. The people in Caedmon's Call can write some really catchy stuff, to put it plainly. Their guitar riffs are at times funky, but can switch quickly to soothing and praise-like. (I've heard their guitar compared to that of Dave Matthews). And the drums and backing electric organ make them sound like The Wallflowers at times. Basically, this is a strong album from a very strong band. It's definitely worth the price -- you'll be singing the tunes all day!
