Everything and More
Editorial Reviews
From the Artist
'Hey Little Suzie (The Cause Of All That)' : When I first heard this song, my first thought was YES! It's a feel-good, fun summer song and a great track to open the cd with. It's my favorite to sing live. 'Everything & More' : The first rendition of this song was totally different. Now, after a lot of revising, this is how I wanted it to be - pure, simple, with beautiful lyrics. 'Peaceable Kingdom' : The song really takes me back to my roots and what I started to listen to when I was younger - bluegrass and country music. The harmonies are great. I think it's something Ricky Skaggs would appreciate. It's very soothing. 'Coming Home' : When I received 'Coming Home,' I also had received a demo of more song ideas and song pitches and was listening to them one by one and then this came on and wow! I looked over at my mother and she was crying. This is one the most challenging songs on the album for me. It's reflective of the new, improved Billy - low, rich and strong. 'Is Anybody Out There' : There are so many songs out there about the war in Iraq, but this one is special. I felt I should record something and speak from the perspective of a young adult. This song is very deep and near to my heart. It's about the life of a soldier who is willing to fight but praying to God through his battles. Our prayers and thanks go out to all those brave young men and women who are keeping us safe. 'Looked Into The Wings' : This is a four-minute story about my life. It's about a very special woman who believed in me when I had no hope of returning to my career (due to my voice change). But, thanks to the support, patience and faith of my manager, here I am. Angela, thank you for everything and I hope you'll keep believing! 'Three Words, Two Hearts, One Kiss' : Now this is a country song! What a fun song this was to record! We were all jumping up and down and dancing in the studio. I hope you have as much fun dancing to it as I did singing it! 'Pray For Him' : This song is similar to 'Oklahoma.' It's about a little brother realizing that his big brother is in trouble and being a kid he really can't do anything to help him except pray for him. Charlie Calello did an awesome arrangement. 'I'm Not Me Anymore' : This seems to be a family favorite. It's a beautiful song that really could be about anyone. 'Missed You On Sunday' : This is my favorite up-tempo track on the record. It's rockin' and I love the lyrics! (No offense to people with purple hair. I have thought about dyeing my hair red). Turn this up and have fun! 'Something 'bout Heaven' : The best way to describe this song is: NICE! It just has a nice message with a really cool groove. The band went all out on this one! 'Awaken The Music' : There's a story behind the song. When I first heard it, I thought...My God they are really trying too hard (to pitch me on these songs!). So, when I said 'No, I hate it,' the songwriters/producers asked me to just give it a try and make my decision after I hear the finished product. So, I sang away! Well, needless to say, the rest of the story is history. The recorded version blew me away. Who knew Mozart's music would sound so good! This, I have to say is my number one favorite track on the record.

MIND-NUMBING ULTRACORE.......2007-03-06
I remember reading a review of this, and they called it "mind-numbing ultracore". When it came out, it was such an improvement over "Land Speed Record" in sound quality that it felt great to blast the speakers as loud as one could. Now, with the wonderful early singles added, you have the complete recipe for what was to come later. This one still gets me going better than caffeine...
since when did indie and punk become so differrent?.......2006-09-08
i find it very funny that so many husker du fans call the early stuff unlistenable, sloppy, or amateur. first off, as with all young freshly started punk/hardcore bands in the beginning of the 80's, they were sloppy and intense. when you're new to your instrument and you play that fast you will be sloppy...and that's the beauty of it.
but what separates this from the other 80's american hardcore is that the music and especially the lyrics have far more heart and brains behind them than just angry young men barking out mindless violence. and here they are flirting with the melodies that would build them such a loyal following, and remember that melody was a big no-no in hardcore. they did it their own way and no one was going to tell them any different.
i love all of husker du's indie label stuff (i don't mean to sound like an indie snob here, but it sounds to me like warner de-clawed them before letting them record) and the early years are probably my favorite. not every song on this is great, but there are many amazing ones, but all are played with such conviction, heart, and thought that i can't help but still love it all.
this is indie rock and it's hardcore. the bands that are called indie now are anything but. none are DIY, yet call themselves indie. if you are fed up by today's "indie" i highly recommmend this. it's like a breath of fresh air.
if you want to learn more, get the book, "our band could be your life," immediately.
Early tracks "From the Gut".......2006-04-04
Everything Falls Apart and More is a collection of early Husker Du singles, the EP Everything Falls Apart, and previously unreleased tracks ("Let's Go Die," "Do You Remember?," and the extended 8:42 "Statues"). This CD is an excellent compilation of the band's alternative-punk days of the early 1980s before they made it big with Zen Arcade, New Day Rising and moved to a more mainstream sound with Flip Your Wig and (with Warner Bros.) Candy Apple Grey and Warehouse: Songs and Stories. What you get here are raw, "from the gut" numbers starting with the driving cadence of Grant Hart's drums opening the track by that name and ending with the rock out "Do You Remember?" which was recorded live in 1980 in a St. Paul basement. My favorites are the title track, "Gravity," "In a Free Land," "Amusement," and "Do You Remember?" but there are other gems on here too. The booklet includes a gushing testimonial to the band's early years by Terry Katzman (who provided the cassette for "Do You Remember?"), photos of the singles, and lyrics to a few of the tracks.
"From the Gut" Mould (1:40): Sounds like the title would suggest. That drum cadence gives it almost a marching off to war feel.
"Blah, Blah, Blah" Hart (2:12): Great punk track!
"Punch Drunk" (0.30) "Bricklayer" (0.34): Fierce, screaming tracks. Cryptic Slaughter had to have been influenced by early Husker Du. I don't like these, but they are short.
"Afraid of Being Wrong" Mould (1:24): Still fierce punk, but this settle down a bit.
"Sunshine Superman" Hart (1:51): Fun, fast cover song.
"Signals From Above" (1:39): Another fierce punk track, but this one has a cool bass line.
"Everything Falls Apart" Mould (2:14): One of my favorites. A very catchy track with an awesome guitar solo.
"Wheels" Hart (2:08): Grant Hart screaming about taking Sharon Tate for a spin: "I've got a real big engine and it goes vroom vroom. Could be a cradle, could be a tomb." Gotta love those lyrics.
"Target" Mould (1:43): Also played on the live album The Living End. Killer power track.
"Obnoxious" Mould (0.55): Speedy, punk track but no screaming so I like it better.
"Gravity" Mould (2:40): This track is awesome. One of my favorites on this album. The bass, the guitar, the rockin' guitar solo, the drums, the vocals-everything falls together (well, it is gravity).
"In a Free Land" Mould (2:54): Killer single and a powerful track. I love the guitar here.
"What Do I Want?" Hart (1:15): Just Grant Hart screaming "What do I want? What will make me happy? Nothing! Nothing! Nothing!"
"M.I.C." Mould (1:11): Stands for "military industrial complex" that President Eisenhower warned us about. Fierce punk track. Not bad but not too special either.
"Statues" Hart (8:45): Yes, this extended version is almost 9 minutes! Great song, but it does go on here. I like the lyrics but I wonder what Hart now thinks of the line "You act like you're 18, but you're closer to 50. You ain't got no reason to express rage. Why don't you hang around people your own age." I'm in my early 30s, but I feel anyone close to 50 has every reason to express rage.
"Let's Go Die" Norton (1:54): Rocker written by Greg Norton.
"Amusement" Mould (4:58): Another favorite of mine. Slower tempo with excellent bass and drums. It sounds like it was recorded in a musty basement. It has a murky sound but, to me, that is part of its appeal as are Mould's angry vocals: "I'm not easily amused by YOU! Not easily amazed. Don't you do something different. I won't even be PHASED!"
"Do You Remember?" (1:55): The album ends with an amazing rocker the title of course being the meaning of Husker Du in Norwegian(?) or is it Swedish(?). Anyway, the song kicks fanny from the word "Go!"
I give it 4.5 stars, actually...........2005-03-30
This album combines Husker Du's debut single (Statues), their single In a Free Land, and their mini-album Everything Falls Apart, all of which were released in the early 1980's on their own Reflex Records label. This is RAW, savage, and hardcore Husker Du. While there is a lot of filler (that's still fun to listen to), there is some really cool stuff on here. From the Gut, Blah Blah Blah, Bricklayer, Let's Go Die, Target, and Gravity are all great punk songs. They do a demented and enjoyable cover of Donovan's "Sunshine Superman", and the songs In a Free Land and Everything Falls Apart hint at what was to come. Statues is a LONG single at 9 minutes, and gets sort of grating at the end, but is still a great listen and a fascinating document. Even at this early stage, Husker Du was pushing the envelope. While not essential for the casual fan, for the true fan, this makes great listening and is a slice of Husker history.
Better than Land Speed Record.......2004-04-08
If you are curious about Husker Du, I would recommend buying "Metal Circus" or anything recorded after that. However, if you are interested in the band's formative years, this collection should satisfy. It basically consists of better-than-average ("From The Gut", "Blah, Blah, Blah", "In A Free Land", "Everything Falls Apart"), average ("Wheels", "Target", "Let's Go Die"), and totally forgetable ("Punch Drunk", "Bricklayer", "Statues") early-eighties hardcore. By the time "Zen Arcade" was recorded, Bob and Grant had matured considerably as songwriters. However, even if Husker Du's later material far outdistances the music on this collection, it's still worth adding to your collection, in my opinion.

Album Details
Digitally Remastered Double Anthology of the Pop and Soundtrack Composer from the 50's and 60's. Perhaps his Best Counterpart of Today Would Be John Williams. A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.
Customer Reviews:
not enough Galway.......2003-10-02
There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.
Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03
I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

Keep the voice and get new songwriters........2007-02-11
I have been a fan of Billy's since 'One Voice' back in 2000. I was mesmerized. He followed this up with his Christmas album later that year and it's still my favorite Christmas album. Then 'Dare to Dream' blew me away. I bought spare copies of these three albums in case they got scratched.
When 'Heartsongs' came out in 2003, I found it moving. No, not quite as good as previous CDs but very good on its own. And I didn't get an extra copy. But I waited for the follow up, hoping there would be one. And then, two years later I was on the waiting list for 'Everything and More' and it was, well... not everything and certainly not more. True, his voice has aged well which was a fear of mine. But I just couldn't get into the songs. This is just a ho-hum CD.
I understand the Billy fans will not find this review helpful and I wish I could blindly follow.
Hotness factor 101 digress! .......2006-09-06
Call me converted. Billy Gilman has a voice like an angel. An angel that floats above the rest of us, lightly stepping on us, but never leaving a mark.
Gilman reminds me of Clay Aiken in all of the obvious ways, but frankly (and no offense to Clay) ... I think he's moreso, if you catch what I'm trying to say.
So, my hat's and shirt are off to Mr. Gilman. He has a long career ahead of him and a lot of stories that may surface about him that may or may not be true. I hate paparrazzi!
New Supporter of Billy. Never Stop. You're Great!!.......2006-07-30
I knew that Billy Gilman had a voice when I bought the "Heartsongs..." CD. I just didn't realize his love of grasping music. His God-given voice will go far. You won't need to listen to the entire CD here as I haven't to find yourself saying, "I love it." Tears will fall when you let the melody and then the lyric seep into you. I think it was track 6 which took me up with the wings that he speaks of. According to him it's about a special woman who mentored him. At one point, I thought it was about Matty Stepanek.
Ballads get me more than anything from this album. Billy doesn't just give you a general 32 bar pop song. He does cross over to pop every now and then I think. He's also growing into a handsome young man as well. This will help stage appearance. Leave out the teenage girl craze. Billy is serious about what he does. I got that from reading that he dedicated this album to the memory of his friend, the late Mr. Stepanek. Billy knows poetry. His music is poetry. His voice is on the way to tenor. He will be a respected, educated songwriter someday like Sammy Kershaw, even if it is handed to him in the beginning while he is in my opinion, a young Merlin of Country Music.
HURRY WITH THE NEXT ALBUM!.......2006-07-11
Got hooked on Billy Gilman w/ his first album "One Voice" and have all his albums now. What a pure voice...such control, grace note inflections, tone. It is so innocent and clean. Have his CDs on my car player and turn the volume up LOUD to enjoy all the nuances. "Everything and More" is my favorite album. Simply amazed at Billy's talent.
Can't wait for the next offering to see how much better he has gotten.
Arrangements and execution are simply wonderful. Billy's got a great team supporting his efforts.
Billy Gilman: Coming of Age.......2006-06-23
Often, when someone comes of age, they try to foray into previously untested waters such as Charlotte Church going into the pop field. Billy, however, stays true to his roots. He doesn't try to go "hard rock" or convey any "tough guy" images. Even though his voice has changed since "One Voice," it is still crystal clear and very pleasant, but even more, Billy's lyrics convey more of a depth of maturity without compromising his values. And yet, there were some purely fun songs on the album as well, such as "Awaken the Music," to the tune of Mozart's 40th Symphony. I have found this album to be very satisfying and would definitely recommend it to any Billy Gilman fan.

Let me tell you something.......2006-04-02
"Illuminate" is my first Azoic cd. I have always wanted to check out their music but that kept getting pushed back by other artists. I finally bought "Illuminate" not too long ago. I have to admit that "Illuminate" took some time to grow on me. Kristy Venrick's vocals had a tendency to sound a bit monotonous through out the cd. "Let Me Tell You Something" is evidence of just how monotonous her voice sounds. To be honest she sounded more like a man on this song. It's a catchy song but her voice is a bit flat and monotonous. Thankfully that is the one song where Kristy sounded like a man. I dug the bouncy synth beats of "Going Under". That song definitely has a good, bouncy club beat to it which makes it perfect to dance to. My personal favorite song has to be the title track. It has all the right hooks and beats to make this listener addicted to the song. I also love the cover of Animotion's "Obsession". Azoic does a great job of staying faithful to the song yet injecting their own sound of EBM to the song. There were a couple of weak tracks that lacked the same energy and hooks that "Illuminate" and "Obsession" possesses. Otherwise "Illuminate" is a solid Azoic cd for this first time listener.
You are an obsession.......2005-09-01
This is my first album from this group, and I can't say I'm disappointed. The music is very dancey and fast on some of the tracks. For the most part, the group has an industrial feel, leaning a tad on the techno-ey side. All of the music is done primarily with keyboards.
Stand out songs for me are `Ever' and `Truth'; just brilliant. I love their cover of `Obsession'. This song has always been so sexy and they make it even more so with their unique vocals and industrial instrumentation. It just seems to me that some of the songs in this album have more depth and emotion in them than others; very hit or miss with me.
The vocals are primarily done by Kristy Venrick with a few tracks accompanied with Steve Laskarides doing vocals. Kristy's voice is absolutely alluring. She has a rich, strong singing style. She really gives the music its edge.
If you like electronic music that is on the industrial side, check this out. It's not as despairing and bleak as most industrial music tends to be.
Heavenly vocals, great beats.......2005-07-08
This album has become my primary workout soundtrack. I love to run with this album on my iPod - it really gets me running hard keeps me going. Kristy's vocals get stronger with every release, but with this album, they took an exponential leap forward. Not only do the vocals hold a great deal of emotion, but they are so pure and crisp and she uses the full extent of her range. Outstanding tracks are "Let Me Tell You Something," "Illuminate," "Truth," and my favorite track on the entire album "Going Under."
A high energy release that's perfect for working out, getting down on the dance floor or just for playing any time you want to get your heart pumping. This album is highly recommended.
Album Of The Decade.......2005-04-23
"Illuminate" brings forth The Azoics new full length album boasting their astonishingly powerful new sound. The EP's "Conflict" and "Forward", both jaw-dropping in their own right, were but a sample of what The Azoic were preparing!
I will confess that the Azoics early releases weren't very interesting to me, but this album is probably my favorite album of all time, it has all the right hooks, melodies, beats, and GORGEOUS VOCALS by KRISTY VENRICK to claim that title, perhaps even, album of the decade!
The Azoic + their record label are creating an industrial/synth dance revolution, with quite a few other bands following their example or being brought to the attention of a wider industrial audience. So far, I have not heard anything bad surface from Nilaihah records.

Customer Reviews:
I waited for this for five years.......2006-06-30
Between Amazone, Ebay and Napster, I don't usually buy CDs anymore, and I usually wait till I can buy them cheaper "new and used". When this set came out, I was excited, mainly by Disc 5, but wasn't going to spend $70 on it. I waited till it was cheap enough, and got it for Father's day this year.
It was worth the wait.
The concept is great. The packaging is great. The recording is great. Disc five is really cool for an ALW aficionado. There are a few real gems on it; my favorites are Petula Clark's "I Could Have Given You More" and "Benedicite."
I've always thought "Gus the Theatre Cat" made a great medley on the piano with "Unexpected Song" and "I DOn't Know How to Love Him," but wished there was an alternate lyric to match the other two songs. Now that I know there *is*, and it's a good lyric, it's a dream come true.
The melody of "Benedicite" is one of my favorites from _Sunset_ (the book mis-identifies it as "SUrrender"; it's actually "The Lady's Paying" and "Eternal Youth is Worth a Little Suffering"). The lyrics are the canticle from Daniel 3, which comes up every odd Sunday in the Divine Office, so it's nice to have cool music to sing it with.
I haven't bought _By Jeeves_ or _THe Beautiful Game_ yet, to it was great to sample them.
There are other parts of the CD taht aren't found in my collection. I like CD 4 "The Hits."
But the selections on CDs 1-3 don't make sense.
First, any self-respecting ALW fan has the Original London Cast of _Phantom_, so six tracks are totally useless. Why not draw from the Canadian cast with Colm Wilkinson? Or pull out some obscure recordings never published.
Why two different tracks with Michael Ball singing "Love Changes Everything", yet they're hardly any different?
On Disc 5 is "It's Only Your Lover Returning," sung by Julie Covington. It's an early draft of the song (Lloyd Webber and Rice went through several suggested titles) and quite nice. The very thing one expects on a Boxed Set.
So why have the Julie Covington "Don't Cry for Me" on disc 1?? The only difference is a few words, but it's otherwise identical. Why not Elaine Paige or Patti Lupone or Madonna?
The _Evita_ section is otherwise the best, choosing a sample from each major recording, though I'd have chosen slightly differently (as above).
There is a great selection of "Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer" from the Sydmonton festival, using the original music that was changed when _Cats_ went to Broadway_. It would have been nice if they'd included more recordings from Sydmonton, like the original lyric of "All I Ask of You" shown on the second DVD to the _Phantom_ movie.
With so many great actress-singers who've played Norma Desmond, why does the collection beat us over the head with Glenn Close?
Paul Miles Kingston must be set for life in royalties, for the number of albums the original recording of "Pie Jesu" has appeared on. "Amigos Para Siempre" is nice, but it reminds me of Shari Lewis's "The Song that Doesn't End," especially when it's been used on so many compilations.
In short, this is a great collection for the obscure material, if you can get it cheap. But for a boxed set, it's a poor sampling, drawn mostly from the most familiar recordings.
Excellent collection but BIG PUBLISHING MISTAKE! .......2006-01-10
Please beware they made a mistake on this. It's actually the shortened Ray Shell version of STARLIGHT EXPRESS from the original 1984 London cast - NOT the El Debarge single from 1987 like it says on the box. I don't know how they let that goof pass. Sorry to Ray Shell. Having said that, this is an outstanding compilation of Lloyd Webber's greatest hits.
ONE OF LLOYD WEBBER'S BEST COMPILATIONS, DESPITE A FEW FLAWS.......2005-03-21
Regardless of the fact that some of his latest efforts (most notably, The Woman in White) are disappointing, there can be little doubt that Andrew Lloyd Webber is one of the greatest composers ever to work in the musical theatre. Ever since his "Jesus Christ Superstar" hit the stage in the early 70-is, it was clear that the conception and perception of musicals are never going to be the same again. Many of his songs became standards not only in the theatre history, but also as tops on the charts. Even though he's British, his influence on the shape of the modern musical theatre expanded over the West End boundaries long ago and has thus made an enormous impact on Broadway. Two of his shows ("Cats" and "The phantom of the opera") hold the record as two the longest running shows in the history of Broadway. He has also been the only composer to have three of his shows running at Broadway concurrently. Some of his awards include three Grammies, a Golden Globe, an Oscar and a bunch of Tony awards. But perhaps most of all, Lloyd Webber is responsible for bringing the musicals and the theatre appealing to the wide audiences, who in different circumstances would not consider seeing a musical. The secret of his success is probably the mixture of beautiful and catchy melodies, interesting subject matter (though some, like Starlight Express, are too thin) and grandiose staging.
Over the years many compilations of his work have emerged. In the late 80-is and early 90-is it was the "Encore" series and lately the one-disc collection called "Gold". The one in question here can be considered one of the best currently on the market. First, it includes a 3-disc selections from all of his shows, minus the latest one, i.e., "The Woman in White", which, considering the triviality of the score, is no great lost. The fourth disc covers some of his most known songs sung by the famous artists. Then, there is the fifth disc with previously unreleased material, most of which are the songs ALW wrote with Tim Rice for various artists during the 70-is. The disks are all neatly packed in a hardcover book that features 67 pages of pictures and text with information about each of ALW's shows. One of the other assets here is the perfect sound quality, since all of the tracks have been digitally remastered.
Here are my basic impressions and comments regarding the material on the discs:
* Disc #1 has the selections from "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Evita", "Cats" and "Song & Dance". The Superstar material mostly comes from the Concept Recording. Although the songs sound beautiful as always, their orchestration is a bit dated now. Only Steve Balsamo's "Gethsemane" from the 1996 revival cast has a modern rock sound. "Evita" comes with the material from all of the major recordings: London, Broadway and the movie productions, as well as the Concept album. No objections here; since this is one of ALW's most satisfying works, every song is just perfect, although Patti LuPone, the Broadway and overall the best Evita, is left with only a couple of lines. With the selections from "Cats", however, I have some doubts. A plus to the choice of the "Jellicle ball" impressive orchestral sequence from the 1998 movie version and "Mister Mistoffelees" from the 1981 London cast. One of the best known ALW's songs, "Memory", also comes from that album. It's a pretty version and Elaine Paige's rendition cannot be matched, but why include this when the definite version, featuring an 80-piece orchestra and Elaine Paige with much better interpretation, can be found in the same movie version. Thusly, one has to buy Elaine Paige's latest 2-disc compilation "Centre Stage: The very best of Elaine Paige" to get that one. And "Gus the theatre cat" is more a recital than a song, so there was not much point in including that. Marti Webb brings her vocal charm to the "Song & Dance" sequence, Sarah Brightman sings "Unexpected song" with her famous soprano, but as much as I like her version, Bernadette Peters, who was in this show on Broadway is strangely left out here.
* Disc # 2 starts with "Starlight Express". This was never one of my favorite ALW's shows; the plot is even lighter than in "Cats" and the 1984 original cast recording is terribly dated. Yet, here we have one terrific duet, "I am starlight" from the original together with three songs from the later revivals and it seems that fresh orchestrations were just the thing Starlight needed. My favorite remains a touchy ballad, "Next time you fall in love". "Requiem" is the most solemn of all ALW's compositions, written in 1985 to commemorate the death of his father. Placido Domingo's tenor rides together with the chorus all the way through the strong "Hosanna", only to be joined by Sarah Brightman in the final moments of this song. She then gives an echoing deliverance of "Pie Jesu". What can be said of ALW's next show, "The Phantom of the Opera"? A phenomenon in its own right, it's easy to see from the six numbers included here why this is one of the best and most beloved musicals of all time. The cast, the music, the story - everything is perfect. Although "Aspects of love" was never a popular hit, it does have some of the most beautiful love melodies ALW has ever written. "Love changes everything" sung by Michael Ball is probably one of the best tunes ever about love. The rest of the selected material here has a dreamy love flavor and the melodies find their way into your brain in the best Lloyd Webber way.
* ALW's first musical, "Joseph and the amazing Technicolor dreamcoat" was more successful in its revival form than the original from the 70-is. The three songs included here are sung by the show stars, Jason Donovan and Donny Osmond. Maria Friedman was not a lucky choice to play the narrator, as the track from the 1998 movie version shows. "By Jeeves" was ALW's only big flop when it came to the stage in the 70-is. The 1995 revival sounds much better though, full of funny numbers in the best manner of the musical comedy. "Travel hopefully" remains one of the show's highlights on this compilation. "Sunset Boulevard" comes next. "Sunset" remains for me one of Webber's best scores; lush and beautiful. I listen to the original cast recording with Patti LuPone all the time. However, here most of the songs are performed by Glenn Close. A big mistake. If you've ever listened the American premiere recording with her, you'll know what I am talking about. She may have a strong stage presence, but her vocal abilities are too limited, and her aggressive approach to the role lacks any subtlety. Therefore, the two big numbers from this show, "With one look" and "As if we never said goodbye" are ruined by the fact she can't sing. The same goes for the American Joe Gillis, who was played by Alan Campbell. Luckily, Patti LuPone and Kevin Anderson, the original Norma and Joe from the London production, make their brief entrance here with the "Perfect year"; enough to show how better they are. The funny thing is, on the jacket and inside of it, Glenn Close and Alan Campbell are credited as performers in this song as well. If this was a mistake on ALW's part, it was a good one. The next ALW's show, "Whistle down the wind" was never a critic's dear and yet the audiences rushed in to see it in London. The score brings back ALW to his rock and roll roots of the seventies and the story is quite interesting. But the selections here are not the happiest, since the cast recording boasts with much better songs. And finally, "The Beautiful Game". Again, we have one of those ALW's shows that is worth in its individual parts rather than as a whole. "Our kind of love" and "Let us love in peace" are two catchy ballads. The latter is a nice amalgam version not available elsewhere. The two other tracks here I could live without.
* Disc # 4 has the songs from all the above shows performed by different artists. The assembled tracks have their pros and cons. For example, we have some previously unreleased stuff, like Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's operettic rendition of "The heart is slow to learn", or a stunning and epic "A kiss is a terrible thing to waste" from "Whistle down the wind", performed by The Metal Philharmonic Orchestra. Then again, what was the point in including almost identical tracks as the ones on the previous disks? So we have Michael Ball again singing "Love changes everything" with only a bit different orchestration; Sarah Brightman comes out again with the same Phantom duets, but only with the different male singers. It would be much more appropriate to include tracks from the Toronto Cast of the Phantom, with Colm Wilkinson. Other pop deliverances (Tina Arena's "Whistle down the wind", Barbra Streisand's "As if we never said goodbye", Boyzone's "No matter what" and many more) were wisely chosen. Patti LuPone is again nowhere to be found and Petula Clark's "With one look" sounds too worn-out.
* The last disc is probably the one that will be of most interest to Lloyd Webber aficionados. It consists of entirely previously unreleased material ALW for the most part wrote for various artists during his early years, with Tim Rice. Some of these tunes, not successful as a singles, were later used in his shows. Thus "Down thru' summer" became "Buenos Aires"in Evita, "Try it and see", an unsuccessful attempt for the Eurovision was used for "King Herod's song" in "Superstar" and so on. Some of these songs are nicely made pop songs: "Make believe love", ALW's first recorded composition, for which he provided the lyrics; "Goodbye Seattle", sung by Paul Raven, who later became Gary Glitter; "Come back Richard, your country needs you", from a never made musical, sung here by Tim Rice, or Latin flavored "Magdalena", with Tony Christie singing. My all time favorite here is a song called "It's easy for you", sung by none other than Elvis Presley himself. Lloyd Webber and Rice sent him a demo recording that he accepted and recorded this live version a couple of weeks before he died. It's amazing to hear how his voice remained in the perfect shape. Also, there is a track of Andrew Lloyd Webber singing "Policle dogs and Jellicle cats" while plying the piano. His voice doesn't sound bad at all.
Taken as a whole, this compilation makes a perfect birthday or Christmas present to any fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber shows, or just anybody interested in some of the best tunes from the modern era of the musical theatre; despite the flaws I mentioned above. To the former, it may just be the final addition for the Andrew Lloyd Webber collection.
SUCH MAGICAL MUSIC OF THE NIGHT!.......2003-01-19
"Evita." "Sunset Blvd." "Starlight Express." "Jesus Christ Superstar." "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." "Requiem." "Aspects of Love." The man who is the most recognized composer in the history of the musical theatre, the man who has won more Tonys than any other composer, the man who boasts the best-selling show of all time ("The Phantom of the
Opera") and the longest-running show of all time ("Cats"), the man whose homes are filled with three Grammys, five Oliviers, a Golden Globe, and Oscar and too many other honors and hosannas to mention, the man knighted in 1992 certainly doesn't need an introduction. Now Decca Broadway pays tribute to Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber with "Now and Forever," a spectacular 5-CD set compiled and produced by Sir Andy himself. It's cheaper than a
ticket to "The Producers" ... and more much exciting. This treasure trove contains highlights from all of Webber's shows, and a bonus disc of tunes sung by Betty Buckley, Barbara
Streisand, Jose Carreras, Boy George, Charlotte Church, Madonna, Tom Jones, Petula Clark, even Elvis! A must for lovers of theatre---and good music.
A Must Have for Sir Andrew fans.......2002-05-21
This five-CD collection of Andrew Lloyd Webber's career is fantastic. It leaves virtually no stone unturned. I have no doubt that diehard Webber fans will love this, especially for the 5th disc entitled "From the Vaults." This disc alone is worth the price as it contains tunes never before heard by the typical fan. Who knew Elvis did a Lloyd Webber tune?!? I didn't! Also the tune "Benedictine" which the composer wrote for his most recent marriage is not only pretty, but it has the same medley as "The Lady's Paying" from "Sunset Blvd." which I found highly enjoyable. Another great track is the composer himself singing a cut song from "Cats" entitled "Pollicle Dogs and Jellicle Cats" which has the same tune as "Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats," but to hear Sir Andrew sing is a blast...he sounds a lot like Al "Year of the Cat" Stewart.
The cuts from the musicals are great but are likely owned by ALW fans as they are on the original cast albums. And I'm glad that there were tunes included from the composers most recent efforts which have yet to make it beyond London (Whistle Down the Wind, Beautiful Game).
My only complaint is the inclusion of way too many tracks by Sarah Brightman. She must've received a great divorce settlement that included having tunes on any ALW collection until the end of time!! Her interpretations of some of the tunes were limp and uninspired. I would've much rather heard casts from around the world rather than yet another song by this disdainful soprano! How about Colm Wilkinson's version of "Music of the Night" from the original Canadian cast of "Phantom"? Or Michael Crawford's version of "Unexpected Song"? What? No Betty Buckley from "Sunset Blvd."? And of course there are songs you KNOW are going to be on the collection before you even listen to it as they have been on EVERY ALW collection for the past decade or so.
A great collection but too much Sarah Brightman!

Pretty Good.......2007-07-08
Everything And More is a fairly good CD. There are no really poor songs. There are three that are quite good: 'Miracle', 'Everything And More', and 'More To This Life'.
Although it is reasonably good, there is nothing really exceptional on this CD. The lyrics are good. They contain a consistent Christian message.
My recommendation would be to try a couple of the aforementioned songs through ITunes or another music download service rather than buying a whole album.
Fantastic Voyage (side B).......2006-05-27
My 16 year old son turned to me two days ago and told me that since I like Kutless so much, I would probably like this other band called "Story Side B". He has always had awesome taste in music, so I pulled up RealPlayer and gave it a shot.
The first song I played was the one he loves the most (this week) "Breathe". Incredible piece. We played it twice. Then I played a few others. In two hours, I played three songs. Just three, over and over and over. From the Styx-reminiscent "Off the Ground" to the moving sincerity of "Dance To Me". There are so many influences I can hear in the vocals and melodies, but I hesitate to name them because the end result stands so totally on it's own.
The messages are simple. Trust. Have faith. Find good people. God loves us. And "You Are Not Alone".
In every track, one can't help but be assured that these guys truly love what they do and had a blast writing and recording this debut album.
This writer eagerly awaits not only the next offering, but that Story Side B will put together a MySpace web page, to further share their awesome gifts with all the music lovers there.
One of the Best Albums EVER!.......2006-05-16
Hey Joey Thompson (three reviews below), don't forget that Toby Mac (aka Toby mcKeehan) pretty much owns the record label that Story Side B is on, and signed the band. However, this does not matter when it comes to the true talent of this band and the artistic quality of the album. In my opinion, this is the best "positive rock" album ever! Yep...I said it!
I personally know most of the band and I can say that each of these guys are musical geniuses. Between Lou (who also lead the awesome band "Monkey the Fish"), Matt, Ron, Jordan, and Lil' Preston Pohl, these guys have created an album that can withstand time. Each song is perfectly crafted. There is NO filler on this album. These guys are definitely a band to watch. I predict that they will become HUGE and even have some cross-over success to the main-stream music audience. Plus, they are some of the most down-to-earth guys you will ever meet. No matter how long they have been touring or how tired they may be, they are always approachable by fans and they always greet them with a smile, handshake, and usually a hug.
You can't go wrong with buying this C.D. I'm so confident that you'll like this C.D...I'll guarantee that if you don't, I'm sure someone else will want to buy it from you!
Everything and More!.......2006-05-11
This is Christian Music at it's most awesome level. It is amazing
that 5 of the most talented young men have blended their gifts, diversity of backgrounds and skills together for a common goal of reaching the young at heart with a powerful message through music. This CD is a MUST BUY!! I can't hardly wait for the next project. If you have the chance to catch one of their shows.....Run / don't walk; you'll be glad you did.
Amazing CD.......2006-03-17
I have followed them from the beginning and I have loved everything these guys have put out. Highly recommended!

Customer Reviews:
Sensational Vocal Album by Carole Farley and William Bolcom.......2007-02-13
Carole Farley and William Bolcom have recorded this landmark CD, and I can easily understand why this CD received a GRAMMY nomination in the "Best Vocal Recording of the Year" and a 2nd GRAMMY nomination in the "Best Engineered Recording of the Year" category. It's indeed one of the best vocal albums of contemporary songs ever made. Carole Farley, who made her MET debut in the MET's first LULU production, seems to be just at home with Puccini, Poulenc, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich and even Latin American popular songs (her Lecuona songs album is extremely beautiful).
William Bolcom's accompaniment is brilliant, and the songs are a revelation.

Great Songs, but Mind the Singer.......2006-07-04
This is one of those discs where the listener has to balance the advantages of the program with the disadvantages of the performance. Bolcom is one of this country's most versatile and brilliant composers, and those qualities are demonstrated to great effect in the songs on this album. His piano playing is, as one would expect, also solid and expressive. The drawback here is Carole Farley. Although her diction and intonation are good, as far as tone-color goes, she seems to be a one-trick pony; and if you don't like that trick (opera singer trying to sound like what she thinks a musical theater singer sounds like), listening to her can get very tiring. So while I highly recommend the disc for its content, I suggest listening to excerpts first before buying just to make sure that the singer's voice doesn't drive you batty.
The Songs of William Bolcom.......2006-02-14
The American composer William Bolcom (b. 1938) is best-known for his large-scale setting of William Blake's "Songs of Innocence and Experience," which is available on a 3-CD Naxos set. This new collection of Bolcom's songs also on Naxos shows the composers's lifelong fascination with Blake. It includes an early lyrical setting of Blake's poem, "Mary" which deals with a beautiful and intelligent young woman and her rejection by her society. In the several torch and cabaret-style works it includes, the collection also shows Bolcom's attempts to fuse classical with popular styles of music. Bolcom also has done so in his piano music, much of which is heavily influenced by ragtime.
The songs on this CD are performed and selected by soprano Carole Farley with Bolcom himself at the piano. Ms. Farley has also recorded for Naxos' "American classics" series a selection of the songs of Ned Rorem with Rorem at the piano. Ms. Farley and Naxos are doing listeners a service by introducing them to the world of the American art song.
The highlight of this CD is the 20-minute song-cycle "I will breathe a mountain" in which Bolcom sets 11 poems by American women. The poems were selected by Alice Fulton, and they include Fulton's own "I will swing those obligatos around" in which the young singer describes a come-on from a boor. The song writing is declamatory in character with many twists, turns, and shouts in the vocal line. Only the setting of H.D.'s "Never More Will the Wind" is lyrical and flowing. Besides Fulton and H.D. the settings include poems by Millay, Gwendolwn Brooks (a poem called "The Crazy Woman" with appropriately wild shrieks) Anne Sexton, Denise Levertov, Marianne Moore (listen to what Ms. Farley makes of the poets wish to be a DRA' GON), Emily Dickinson (in a moving poem of the stillness of a home after death),Louise Bogan, May Swenson, and Elizabeth Bishop. "I will breathe a mountain" is an outstanding and moving contemporary American song-cycle and is in itself sufficient reason for hearing this recording.
The CD also includes a second exquisite cycle, "Songs to Dance" which sets ten miniature poems by George Montgomery. This is a work to be danced as well as sung, and it has apparently been performed live only once, by the composer, his wife, the soprano Joan Morris, and dancer, Dan Wagoner. It has never been recorded before. The work deserves to be heard and seen.
Many of the remaining works on this CD are cabaret-style theatrical pieces that Bolcom composed in collaboration with lyricist Arnold Weinstein. The best of these are two torch songs from a show called "Casino Paradise": Night Make my Day (a parody of the torch style which is sometimes performed straight) and "My Father the Gangster", in which a young woman laments how men are, understandably, worried about her father and afraid to approach her. The collection opens with a scream by Ms. Farley in the erotic novelty "You cannot have me now", about the affairs of the wife of a German officer, sung with a heavily inflected German accent and also set to words by Weinstein.
I enjoyed Bolcom's short setting of May Swenson's poem "The Digital Wonder Watch" with the tick-ticking in the piano. This song is a satire of technology, with the poet describing the features of her "wonderful watch" while asking: "Does it show how to wind up/a broken heart?" The other songs on the CD include the passionate "The Last Days of Mankind", conceived for rock singer Marianne Faithful, two eloquent settings of poems by Richard Tillinghast, and four concluding early collaborations between Bolcom and Weinstein.
This CD offers an opportunity to explore the world of American song in the works of a leading contemporary composer. The cycle, "I will breathe a mountain" will be a lasting achievement in American art song.
