Twenty or thirty years ago, if anyone had tried to imagine what worship would sound like in the 21st century, he or she probably would have been way off. What Delirious has brought to life with its 2000 release Glo is nothing less than a perfect depiction of worshipful expression in a new millennium, something no forecast could have predicted. Blending the most celebrated aspects of their previous records, Glo combines the electronic space-rock of Mezzamorphis with the euphoric worship anthems of King of Fools and Cutting Edge. The exotic songcraft and production together fashion this otherworldly journey, and crest with Martin Smith's divinely awestruck and heaven-desperate temperament. Although Delirious has been in the worshipping business since the early 1990s, each member has retained a focused passion that clearly is unfeigned and likely to cause an internal double take within those who attempt a causal listen. Even the floaty electronic textures of Glo's ballads carry an energy that will not let one drift from the path that the songs are taking. This extravagant response of worship to an infinite God is unmatched by any other worship artist. Delirious fans already will hold a high opinion of the band, but this disc exceeds even lofty expectations. --Israel Button

After proclaiming with its last release, Mezzamorphis, that it was a band going places, leaving the past behind, the British quintet Delirious returns to its praise & worship origins on Glo.

With Cutting Edge, the two-disc collection that brought Delirious' early recordings of modern praise & worship songs to the States, the band spearheaded a movement that has had a profound effect on the Christian recording industry while impacting worship leaders in thousands of local settings. 5 out of 5 stars One of the best worship albums from one of Woship music best bands........2007-04-27

If there is one thing that can be said about Delirious? it that they are probably one of the most consistent bands out there. I have listened to a lot of bands, Christian and non-Christian, and there are very few bands that I can say produce albums that I consistently enjoy. Delirious? is one of those rare bands that is always great. I was turned onto Delirious? by their World Service album, and thought that that was great, but as I have worked my way through their catalogue going backwards, I have found that each album has its own style, but is still uniquely Delirious?.

The thing that is so unique about this band is that they remain artistic without compromising their heart of worship. It is hard to find a band that is both creative and worshipful, and yet is that not the heart of worship? God is the father of creation and there for the creator of creativity. Should we not than worship in spirit and truth with creativity? That is why I had a hard time with worship music, usually seemed so bland and predictable, but that is not the case with Delirious?!

So, what is different about Glo? I have to say the great thing about Glo that is so different from World Service is the consistency here. Whereas World Service was mellow, and had some amazing songs, at times it lacked heart; sometimes it felt a little contrived. Glo on the other hand is consistent and each track flows into the next without seeming boring. Some elements of this album are carried over into Mission Bell, but Mission Bell is very raw(ie. Paint this Town Red), but yet very polished, and is a little bit different in its approach then Glo. Glo never feels raw, but has such organic feeling to it, just like you are there with the band live.

Some of the songs (God you are My God, Investigate, Awakening the Dawn, and Jesus' Blood) have sort of second part Jam Session which are titled "Glo In the Dark" parts 1,2,3, or 4. This is what makes the album so unique, it takes some of the tracks and then it just runs with them into a spontaneous worship session. That is what makes this album so different from the other worship albums I have heard. It reminds of the chapel services at my school. There is not a single weak track here, but the best tracks are undoubtedly the ones that create the jam/spontaneous worship sessions. My favorite of these is probably "Investigate" with "Fly Away" refrain.

With all of that said, if you are new to Delirious, this a great place to start. If you think that worship is always bland, boring, and unoriginal, then you should purchase this album, you will be presently surprised. I suggest that like me, you choose to listen to this album for a few hours straight while you are doing stuff around the house or doing homework. To fully appreciate an album it is always best to listen to it several times in one sitting.

Well, enjoy! God Bless ~Amy

5 out of 5 stars Praise and Worship as it should be..........2005-11-13

This isn't a new CD. Many of you who have it or see it on here understand that. But new doesn't necessarily mean better.

I admit, I haven't been the biggest fan of praise and worship music in my life. Hymns are ok, but not really that great most of the time. And though I adore Michael W. Smith and the Newsboys, they've overdone P&W. In spades.

So when I got this album (recently, in fact), I can't say that I was expecting a whole lot. Yeah, I've heard some stuff by Delirious? before, but hadn't listened to them that much.

This album though....It not only speaks to me, it speaks for me. It's one of those albums that gives you the words you've been looking for when you just haven't been able to find them.

The styles showcased on Glo are diverse an full....no half-baked attempts at mixing genres. Gregorian chants, violins, and rocking guitar riffs make it an enthralling listen.

The highlight of this album is the track "Jesus' Blood". Listen to it when you're alone, when you can think....I guarantee it will give you chills....Just like this whole album will.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Years Later.. and STILL the best worship album there is!.......2005-11-03

Of all the worship albums I've purchased before or after, THIS album is my absolute favorite. Inspired, passionate, and bold, each song has the feel of an "anthem" of worship. While the heavy guitar riffs may not be everyone's cup of tea, most people find the music to be powerful and beautifully overwhelming.

As in previous albums, Delirious has mastered the art of building each song to an incredible, worshipful climax. My personal favorites are:

1. God You Are My God (including its 2nd half.. 'Glo Part 1')
2. My Glorious
3. God's Romance
4. Everything
5. Jesus' Blood
6. who am I kidding.. they're ALL good.

If this album is not part of your modern worship collection, get it today!

4 out of 5 stars Very cool but different.......2004-10-01

I generally agree with the opinions others have posted. However, I am not quite such a die-hard Delirious fan. To be honest, the first time I heard the songs on the Glo album, I cringed. They were weird. I felt like I was listening to music from another planet.

However, since I bought the CD, I made myself listen to it a few more times. I quickly discovered that these are the kind of songs that grow on you. Each time I listen to these songs, I like them more.

In a phrase, this CD is hardcore creativity. Delirious expands the boundaries of modern rock, turning it into a worship experience that goes from sour to sweet and everything in between. Wow.

I still like their Mezzamorphis CD better, but this one is definitely worthy of at least 4 stars.

4 out of 5 stars "High Church" Modern Worship.......2003-08-03

I got this album in mid-2001, and sensed that it was something special, but it just never hit the right mood for me. Then in late summer 2002, when I was reading about the Orthodox and Catholic churches and church history, this album hit me in the right spot. I call this "high church modern worship."

The opening song sets the tone with a call to worship in Gregorian chant. Then the electric guitars begin and the sung words, "God, You are my God...." Other words from this grand opening song are, "I've seen Your power and Your glory; You've let me see You in the sanctuary...." What also makes this a good opening song is the phrase repeated by the background choral singers, "Come to the house of God." This is a song that just sets the tone for a time of awe-inspiring worship of the Powerful One. It's very classy music. After the main portion of the song, as Delirious? is known to do from time to time, they just continue to play, no words, just in continued worship, expressing their awe of God.

The second song features the "church people" singing "Holy is the Lord." Then for the next two songs, things quiet down, and these are the types of songs that Delirious? does that normally put me to sleep, but on this album, there is such a special sense of worship about it, I don't completely lose it, although more often than not I skip these tracks. Things waken up again on the fifth song, "My Glorious," which is a strong, grand, powerful statement of God's power: "God is bigger than the air I breathe...God will save the day, and all will say `My glorious [God]...'" We sing this song quite frequently at the church I go to (Ann Arbor Vineyard).

The next three songs are mellow again. Sometimes I listen to them, but I ALWAYS skip "Hang On To You," which is dreadful Barry Manilow type music. What were they thinking???

The third mellow song, "Intimate Stranger," has a quiet worshipful instrumental lingering at the end, and then suddenly, excitement bursts forth as the next track begins, "Awaken The Dawn." The chorus of this song goes, "You are the Lord, the Savior of all, God of creation we praise You." This is a very grand, majestic song. And something else special about this? An important instrument in it is bagpipes! Now when is the last time you heard bagpipes in a modern worship song? But it works. It's quite awesome, especially at the end of the song when they go into one of their extended worshipful instrumental meanderings again, and the bagpipes come to the forefront.

Like all Delirious? albums, this one is highly variable in quality--in my book anyway--with great fast songs and boring slow songs--but this is by far their best album ever. The good songs are so good, they make the whole album strong enough to put it at #5 on my list of Favorite CDs of 2002. This is an incredible worship experience. I have played this album a lot--and continue to play it--mostly just my favorite tracks, but those 4 songs I love are 27 minutes in length, enough for nearly any trip in the car around town. Some whole albums I have are not much longer than 27 minutes, so there's plenty for me to enjoy with just these four songs.

This album is such a Delirious? masterpiece that I doubted even they could follow up with anything as good. And in fact, their follow-up album, "Touch," is nothing of the experience that "Glo" is, although it does have a different focus so it's hard to compare directly.

When you are in the mood for high church worship using modern rock music, when you're in the mood for majestic, grand worship of God, this is the album to listen to.

3 out of 5 stars It is what it is..........2006-09-18

In response to the review by Laura Laureate, check the date this album was recorded...1990! You can hardly say success had gone to Bjork's head...she was still in the Sugarcubes and relatively unknown back then. She tried something different and then moved on. That being said, it is only essential for true Bjork fans.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Bjork album.......2006-07-03

I especially love Luktar-Gvendur, Kata Rokkar and I Dansi. I think Kata Rokkar may be the best song Bjork has ever recorded (that's in my humble opinion of course).

It's jazz... Upbeat at times, slow and smooth at others. Except it has Bjork's voice on it. She's not the jazziest of vocalists, but she still adds 150% to the beauty of the music. It's soo much different from the rest of her other work, which may mean that even if you don't like her solo-electronica stuff you may like this. However, if you're reading this you probably already like Bjork, thus I'm wasting all of this useful space. I'll stop now.

4 out of 5 stars decent album - worth it for bjork fans interested in understanding her musical influences.......2006-01-07

i wish people would take the time to check their information before writing reviews. but of course that's the trade-off we get with web reviews right - as opposed to reading a newspaper or magazine writer's take on something, which has to be fact-checked.

two things from previous reviews need to be addressed. laura laureate writes of bjork, "has success gone to her head? does she think she can 'do it all'? so far she has made fairly smart choices... but she is hitting a wall with gling-glo". if you looked at the title of the album you'd see that this is a reissue. gling-glo was released in the states in 2003, but originally recorded and released in iceland in 1989-1990. this is a full five years before post, when she was still playing with the sugarcubes and was barely known-of here in the states. so this was actually done way before the "smart choices" laura speaks of. besides which, musicians don't play music just for the benefit of the purchasing public. bjork and the very famous icelandic jazz trio she's playing with on this album had played together several times, and had really enjoyed themselves. so they recorded an album together. sometimes musicians play music of a type or genre that they're interested in, or to play with musicians they like, and the result ends up influencing their later work. in that sense i find it pointless to ask whether she can "do it all"; the fact that she tried it is what's interesting for us music fans.

steve parker writes of the trio that "somehow they manage to completely miss the essence of jazz... It's like learning a foreign language from a book, without ever hearing it spoken... somewhere between New York and Iceland something crucial got lost in translation.". perhaps that's because this is an icelandic jazz trio, popular in iceland, recording mostly icelandic folk songs, for an icelandic audience. musical traditions always morph and change when translated across cultures. it may not jive with our definition of the genre but that doesn't make it any less valid or successful as music.

on this album, bjork is playing with the gudmundar ingólfssonar trio. the trio is one of the most popular jazz groups in iceland. given the context, i think it's a fairly successful album. the jazz is "light" to american tastes, but enjoyable nonetheless. reminds me of the stuff played in the soundtrack to harry met sally, all the stuff that's iconically associated with warm christmassy winters in new york city. perhaps that's what happens when jazz is translated into a snowy, cold clime. not groundbreaking, but pleasant.

bjork, on the other hand, shows her incredible vocal range on this album. her jazz singing is compelling and successful. one of the reasons i initially fell in love with her solo music is because of her very jazz-like take on pop singing. (disclosure: i'm a jazz musician and fan, but i'm also a pop fan, and like most styles of music, i think the two genres are incredibly hard to "mix" and get right.) what i really like about this album is that it's an opportunity to hear bjork's vocals in a more "traditional" setting. for me, it proves her real abilities as a singer. plus it seems to have had a positive influence on her later work.

overall, if you're a bjork fan, a fan of light jazz, and/or a musician interested in hearing the various influences upon bjork's music, this album is definitely worth it. i just wish i knew icelandic so that i could sing along!

5 out of 5 stars Bjork unleashed.......2005-10-07

This jazzy set floored me. I know it predates her solo career but it unleashes all the joy and pleasure of that wonderful voice and presence. Now the rest of her solo career makes sense: the electronica experimentation and self-seriousness about her art are necessary because she's already expressed her straighforward, outright joy in music here in this set.

The negative reviews here have it wrong -- there's nothing slight about the jazz musicians backing her up. They may not be breaking ground, but in their own way, they are as exuberant and joyous as Bjork herself.

Wholeheartedly recommended, especially for social situations involving high spirits and perhaps distilled spirits.

1 out of 5 stars jazz for the jazz-blind or 'what was she thinking?!'.......2005-09-05

steve peters has already pointed out the shortcomings of this cd in his intelligent review (see below). i'd like to go a step further: i am disappointed in björk's lack of judgement. it makes me wonder... has success gone to her head? does she think she can 'do it all'? so far, she has made fairly smart choices and was obviously able to rate her talent in a way that allowed her to make the best use of it but she is hitting a wall with 'gling-glo'.

this is a sad album that lacks the pizzazz as well as the voice to pull it together. steve peters calls the musicians an "anemic lounge combo" and i couldn't agree more. and björk? in 'gling-glo' she sounds completely... yes, silly... and i don't buy into the idea of silly-by-design. sorry, all you other björk-fans out there, but we should admit that björk is NOT a jazz-singer nor does she even come close. she does have limits, she is human, she errs... and in case you don't want to make the same mistake i did: spare your money and invest it in other albums of hers. any one is 10x better than this.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good, for the most part.......2004-12-19

Hungry Lucy's vocalist (Christa Belle) sounds a lot like kaRIN from Collide (who came first though is questionable); however, her voice is less sugary sweet and more plaintative. At the same time, the music is less ethereal, not that this is bad. Actually, the lack of excessive electronic programming and overuse of vocals is refreshing here, and in some works, such as "Could It Be?" Christa Belle's sinister (yet not overly sweet voice) goes well with the exotic and lovely programming. The music overall has a more melancholy and sinister feeling to it than comparable bands like Collide; still, I admit sometimes the plaintative vocal style leaves something lacking (perhaps some feeling?) to some of the more "upbeat" songs, except for the song "Could It Be?", which is quite memorable and elusive, and one of my favourite songs from this album.

5 out of 5 stars I think this a very creative group.......2004-11-12

I am not sure what the other reviewers are expecting to hear. Actually I was not sure either. This group start on one level of existance and travels on to other levels of existence while continuing to evolve!!!! Open your creative mind and injoy, besides she has one of the most soft haunting voices in this dark wave/gothic/pop/etheral style, while still expanding into new relms of existence. A fan for life!!!!!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Great but not that great.......2004-07-04

Half good, half bad. For a duo which are renowned for producing catchy goth electro and are starting to emerge from the underground, I expected a fair bit more - especially after hearing "Bound In Blood" (which is a superb track). Some of the tracks on this album are so positive and sentimental it's like listening to the cheesiest pop music and that's very disappointing. I want misery and pessimism! The opening track, "Could It Be", would have to be the best track on the entire album. "Fearless" sounds a lot like an early Madonna song, Christa's vocals even sound very similar to Madonna. "Telltale Shot" is truly one of the most beautiful melancholy goth tracks I've ever heard. It's a shame that pretty much all the other tracks, including "In The Circle", all sound too much alike and the album gets very boring quite quickly. The fact that Hungry Lucy are capable of producing such fantastic and original tracks such as "Bound In Blood", "Could It Be" and "Telltale Shot" makes you wonder why the rest of this album is so bad as they have great potential. If it wasn't for the few good tracks and remixes, not to mention Christa's amazing voice, nothing would save this album from being a complete dud. I anticipate a much better third album.

1 out of 5 stars Glo.......2004-06-15

I just went for it and bought the CD but I'm not really impressed, not that she doesn't have talent...it's just not a very good album. She could do better.

5 out of 5 stars Good Album.......2004-05-23

I was in the mood to branch out and try some different "off the beaten path" music that had catchy female vocals and bought this CD based on the recommendations here.

I'm quite pleased with the quality of this album. Production qualities are top notch, most of the songs have a haunting somberness with strong, ringing vocals from the duets female vocalist. The remix CD (2nd disc included) nicely balances this out with jazzed up remixes of several of the tracks on the first CD.

It is apparent that Hungry Lucy is a pretty underrated band and will only get better with subsequent releases.

If you're looking for something different, something that is both relaxing and catchy to listen to, then this CD might be a good choice for you.

1 out of 5 stars Unlistenable tripe.......2004-12-02

I am a big Bjork fan and own every single one of her albums. I love them all, except for this one. This is pure easy listening jazz, and in Icelandic. A lot of people seem to like it, but I can't stand it.

3 out of 5 stars Icelandic pixie + lounge band = 3.5 stars.......2004-08-17

do you like bjork's voice? do you want to hear what she sounds like backed up by a swinging lounge jazz band? then look no further because that is what Gling-Glo is all about. some of these songs sound like little sweet nursury rhymes and others are all out swinging jazz songs. being a big fan of hard bop, be-bop, and avant garde free jazz, i personally don't like this kind of "light" jazz too much. but bjork's voice is the key element here. so it's much better than i would have hoped. there are a few moments where i can't help but picture old men in leisure suits snapping there fingers along to the rolling basslines and tapping high hat. that kind of bugs me...but then bjork's voice soars into the picture and eases the pain. this is worth tracking down if you are a bjork fanatic.it should be noted that almost all the songs are in her native Icelandic language and the price is pretty high for this album. so if none of these factors bother you; then by all means, dive in.

5 out of 5 stars Made it to gold - and they weren't even in it for the money.......2004-05-11

I have had this album since its initial release (x yrs ago) and it's definitely been one of my favourites and still is and always will be. I also know a little about it and how it came to be. It was a collaboration between Iceland's most loved jazz musicians, Gudmundur Ingolfsson (piano) and Gudmundur Steingrimsson (percussion), veterans in their field, and young Bjork, who enjoyed a mixed fame in the home country - famous for being creative in her own right and infamous for shocking people with sensitive tastes. (FYI, neither of them is her dad.) While Bjork was in the Sugarcubes, she and Ingolfsson started hitting it off together and playing live whenever she had the time. They then recorded a collection of songs that were all chosen by Bjork with the aid of some friends. What I remember most is that at the time the album was released it had become common knowledge that Ingolfsson had cancer (news spread fast in a small country). A year later he was dead. That Gling-glo should turn out to be such a hit was such a great thing because it turned out to be last recordings he ever made. It should be noted that Gling-glo is considered as much Ingolfsson's album as it is Björk's, and that he is sorely missed by all.

Having said all that, I must add that the whole album is such a delight, that I wish they could have made more. It's easy on the ear, it swings in a modest way and it always, always picks up my spirits if I'm feeling blue.

And I always sing along at the top of my voice... everytime :-)

5 out of 5 stars Bjork singing jazz? It happened!!.......2002-10-04

I'm a huge Bjork fan and I've got most of her other CDs. After downloading a few songs and reading reviews for Gling-Glo I decided to give it a shot. Any other singer and this CD would be average at best, but the Bjork factor makes it awesome. Nobody sings with the same conviction and feeling in their voice as Bjork. The instrumentalists are pretty good as well. Overall, decent music + Bjork = excellent album.

5 out of 5 stars Immensely enjoyable.......2001-11-07

I didn't know what to expect when I purchased this disc. Bjork with a three piece jazz combo. This CD really highlights her voice within a conventional music framework, without losing the idiosyncrasies of her style that her fans love. Despite not being able to translate a word on all except two tracks, I've found this CD to be so enjoyable that I often listen to it several times in a row.

3 out of 5 stars pleasant.......2005-10-18

a charming little album featuring breezy acoustic numbers with gentle female vocals. the covers of "Friday I'm In Love" (The Cure) and "Crazy Town" (Velocity Girl) are particularly nice. and the original "Travelogue" stands out as a great little song. "Glimmer" is recommended for fans of Belle & Sebastian or Magnetic Fields. although not as quirky or twee as either of those two bands, Glo-worm seems to share a common thread of pop charm that would appeal to their fans.

3 out of 5 stars not essential, but not bad.......2005-10-18

this is a nice little cd. basically, it's a young Bjork backed by a jazz combo. it gets into some painfully average "sitting in a lounge, sipping on cocktails" kind of dinner jazz; but if you're a fan of Bjork....this could be a nice listen. not bad.

3 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2005-08-18

I actually got this CD to use as background music for my Traveller campaign set in the Sword Worlds. It gives a nice twist to the familiar, yet has an alien quality to it. Many of her CDs have an alien sound to them that lend well to gaming background music.

5 out of 5 stars sheer genius.......2003-07-21

A friend once asked me why I bought this album. My response was "why WOULDN'T I want an album that included a jazz recording of 'O Mein Papa' in Icelandic?"

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Bjork and Excellent Jazz!.......2003-07-11

I was really suprised by this CD! I thought it would be some not so good Bjork pre-"Debut" material. Instead, I got to listen to one of the best Bjork albums I've heard. I would put it up there with "Homogenic" and "Greatest Hits". Of course, it is a different genre of music; but it is still increadible.

5 out of 5 stars The Dayglo's most mature album.......2000-06-13

I consider "Here today..." the Dayglo's most mature album. The lyrics are charged with ironic, caustic and reflexive content and the music it's the kind of powerful contemporary punk that you can't stay quiet while you listen it. Take D.R.I, Led Zeppelin, Quentin Tarantino and Ren & Stimpy, mix it, and you get "Here today, guano Tomorrow". All this album's songs are great, but I think "Dragons", Drugged and Driving", "Hide the hamster" and "Here today..." are definitively THE songs. If you are a Hardcore/Punk lover can't miss this BAND.
