While it's not terribly complicated, FFH's brand of hooky pop, blended harmonies and to-the-heart lyrics carries a genuine appeal. And FFH sticks with its sincere approach (with a slight twist) on the group's fourth major-label release. Sure lead singer Jeromy Deibler and guitarist Michael Boggs have a knack for writing great guitar-driven melodies ("It's a Good Day," "Ready for a World," "His Love Goes on Forever"). But FFH now leans heavily on piano as a foundation. From the opening "You Found Me" and "Good to Be Free," to the hymn-like "If Not for Christ," to the closing "Here I Am," the group does more than just tap its creative toes into the water. With impressive maturity, the group boasts lyrics that reflect an evangelistic perspective, while not sugar-coating the sometimes harsh realities of the Christian life in the spotlight. Album Description

"Get Ready To Fly" is Big Beat's second volume of rarely-heard 1960s masters from the vaults of the legendary Norman Petty studios. This time the focus is on the mindbending rock and pop sounds the producer recorded during the late 1960s.

Petty was the first to admit he had little taste for psychedelia, but his exceptional abilities as an engineer allowed the producer to sonically indulge the young bands who visited the studios to the fullest. The results were some of the spaciest sounds to emanate from an American studio in that era, a fascinating potpourri of raging fuzztone, swirling organ and Anglophile harmonies.

Several of the items on "Get Ready To Fly" are acknowledged pop-psych classics, such as the Apple-Glass Cyndrum's `Someday', `To Give Your Lovin'' by the Happy Return and the Hooterville Trolley's `No Silver Bird', but extensive research into the Petty archives has resulted in a tremendous programme of obscure classics and never-before-heard gems. The artists represented journeyed from such disparate locales as Utah, Montana, Mississippi, Texas, Colorado, Missouri and Canada to record with Petty in Clovis, New Mexico.

With unprecedented access to the original master tapes, the sound quality on "Get Ready To Fly" is second to none, and the accompanying booklet is packed with information on this little-documented episode in Norman Petty's career, with the full participation of many of the former band members.

Great music!.......2005-02-26

Roger Day is one of the best children's entertainers I have seen. I first met him when I was scheduling him to perform at my children's elementary school. He was a big hit and has been returning every year. I also use his cds with my 3 year old preschool class and they love the songs. Almost every day one of them asks to sing "Helicopter Harry" or "If You Jump on the Bed". His songs are great for dancing and the lyrics are fun and unique. Every song contains a surprise or two. Any of his cds will be an instant hit with your kids.

We have seen Roger perform locally and my 3 year old son loved him. I ended up buying the CDs and his video. only drawback is I end up having to play them over and over and over.... for my son. The songs are fun, easy to sing to and make you want to get up and dance!!!

Inspirational Lyrics, Pleasant Sound.......2006-03-27

FFH really does a great job in composing lyrically solid songs. Their music is certainly focused on Jesus.

The sound is one that is very light. They have several very good tracks on this CD. I particularly like 'You Found Me' and 'Ready to Fly'. 'It's A Good Day' is also a very catchy tune.

I generally prefer something with a bit more oomph, but this is a nice sound. My daughter is very fond of FFH so their sound can certainly be a draw for teens as well.

Great Christian album.......2005-08-04

To be completely honest, I usually don't really go in for the Christian Contemporary Music. I don't really like listening to the mainstream Christian bands because of the stereotypical sounds, and I'm very particular about music in general. FFH, however, is one I really like. Sure, they have a predictable sound, but the fact is it's a good one. It's positive and uplifting, no matter what song you may be listening to. I can't think of a favorite song right off the bat since they're all good IMHO, but I really enjoyed "Waltz for Jennifer". It's such a beautiful and innocent love song, especially when compared to the "you're so hot, I want your body" message that's in some (of course, not all) "love" songs today. "I'm so glad that God made me for you and you for me." The other FFH albums are very good too.

I love this CD. It is very honoring to God, very pure, powerfull, and a whole lot of fun.

Ready to Fly is one of the best songs of the year, and that is just a bonus, because this album would have been awesome even without it.

Definately buy this, it will motivate you spiritually.

Perfect pop.......2007-03-07

The Verlaines' entire catalogue is worth owning, and so a detailed review is a bit pointless - just buy this. It is a lovely record.

If songwriting was modeling, Downes would have been spotted at a mall at age 13, and would have been a millionaire doing Vogue covers by 14. He's that good. This album sits about half way through his career journey from the rough, early Dunedin sound to the fairly commercial pop-rock of Over The Moon. As a result it tends to be overlooked, particularly by snobs who think everything after Bird Dog was a sell-out.

Production and musicianship is improved, and much of the experimentation and lo-fi trademarks have been replaced by extremely sweet and complex melodies. Downes sings the album in a remarkable way - high, fast paced, pitch perfect, like an opera singer doing scales, ignoring emoting and instead just riding the melodies up and down with no fear of his own voice's limitations. It is just so enjoyable to listen to him sing like that. The lyrics are still angst-ridden, but the delivery is up-beat and charming.

The songs themselves are of a very high quality, with no standouts. This is a remarkable, complete pop record from an under-appreciated genius.

I've been a fan of the verlaines for years and just picked this up. Very impressive, almost as perfect as "way out where".
For the price there should be no hesitation. If you like Zealand pop with great hooks and moody melodies go for it!

Ready To Fly by Melanie Thornton (former singer of La Bouche that died in plane crash in Nov. 2001) is a great album! You may have heard her on La Bouche's Sweet Dreams album, as she's known for the popular hits "Wanna Be My Lover," "Where Do You Go," "Sweet Dreams," and "Falling In Love." Ready To Fly is her first and only solo album which she released shortly before her death. The album is great and contains two cool bonus remixes, one of "Love How You Love Me," and a Remix of "Heartbeat." Mostly every song on here is very heart touching and is guaranteed to grab the listener's ear. You may have to spend a little more on this CD,(as it's an import) but you'll be happy you did, as it'll be well worth your money!

an essential CD for LaBouche fans!.......2003-04-17

Anyone who's a fan of the incomparable dance hits from LaBouche has appreciated the vocals of Melanie Thornton, perhaps without knowing her name.

As Melanie's first solo project, it was ironically titled "Ready to Fly" (she died in a plane crash 2 days after the first single was released).

This second edition CD includes 2 additional tracks (Wonderful Dream was a promo song for Coca Cola in the EU, yet somehow she made it her own).

With nearly flawless vocals and beautiful arrangements, this CD delivers a perfectly enjoyable listening experience, albeit without any of the mega-hits that made LaBouche famous (a few tracks like I Wish It Was Love, Makin' Oooh Oooh certainly come close). But perhaps it is the ballads like Love How You Love Me that showcase Melanie's talent.

A highly recommended and fitting memorial to a major talent.

My kids convinced me to buy this!.......2005-05-20

My eldest son convinced me to buy this album because he saw the song "Beer Party" and wanted to check it out, because he and his friends do a lot of that! So I bought it for him, also knew that if we didn't like it, I could return it no problem.
Anyway, my son loves "Beer Party" and "Ocean Blvd." but I am a Mother of 3 and I work out a lot, and I use the Brown Floyd CD to power my workouts! I love the songs, the melodies, and the beats help me grind through my workouts. What a great CD, we all love it!! The love songs are sweet, and it is a lot of fun.
