The Watchman [Live]
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
"I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me." Ezekiel 3:17 From the beginning call of the shofar (Lord God Of Abraham) to the sounds of joyful praise (Adonai, O Shout For Joy, Baruch Adonai El Shaddai) to the deep sounds of intimate worship (Shema, Holy Holy Holy, Worthy), The Watchman with worship artist, Paul Wilbur, is an important album for a time such as this.
Recorded live at Pastor John Hagees Cornerstone church in San Antonio, this album will bring the listener into a new place of worship as the participants celebrate Gods call of preparation for the days ahead.
"This album is a word from heaven." Paul Wilbur

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful.......2007-05-08
For those who love Paul Wilbur, this is a wonderful blend of new and old songs. For those who have never heard of Paul Wilbur and his Messianic style of worship music, this is a wonderful album for someone to be introduced to Paul Wilbur's music. The overall theme of this album is a great introduction to Messianic Hebrew Christian style of music. This album touches me down deeply. This album also brings a great sense of joy.
I love to sing along with it.
Not disappointed.......2007-03-23
Buying CD's unheard is always daunting, but this one did not disappoint. The blowing of the Shofar on the first track stirs the soul and sounds the warning. The CD is a wonderful mix of Messianic, "reggae", and christian worship music. It will be hard for Paul Wilbur to top this one.
Paul Wilbur-Messianic Worship.......2007-03-19
I love Messianic Worship. It is inspiring, and dynamic, and reminds us of how powerful songs are for delivering us from despair, depression, whatever the enemy has decided to hit us with. Just as David was able to soothe King Saul with his songs of the Lord playing his lyre, so too Paul Wilbur is able to get up stirred up and roused to worship the Lord, and praise Him for His mighty works! God loves to hear His children praise and worship Him. With each song we can fight the enemy, doing battle and bringing Glory to the Father.
I cannot get enough of the songs of Paul Wilbur. He made albums in the 90's with Integrity Music as well.
A great voice and a wonderful man living for God.
Awesome CD
The Watchman by Paul Wilbur.......2007-02-21
The CD arrived in excellent condition, and I was impressed with the
great packaging used to ship the product.
The Watchman -- Deliverance is in the House!.......2007-02-04
I LOVE THE WATCHMAN! AS ALWAYS, LISTENING TO THE WATCHMAN, I AM SWEPT INTO A RHAPSODY OF WORSHIP, REJOICING IN THE PRESENCE AND POWER OF YESHUA HA MESHIACH AND AM SATURATED WITH JOYFUL ANTICIPATION THAT MAKES ME WANT TO LIGHT OFF MY CAMEL AND RUN TO MEET MY LORD, AND ALL THE REST THAT FOLLOWS!
The narrative to the title song is read against an underlying musical score that pulses with ancient rhythms, almost an urgent marching beat, a call to arms:
"Behind the veil of what is seen by the natural eye, a great event is being prepared: a war and a wedding feast will have their place in time. 'Soon,' and 'Not yet,' is the word that the watchman gives as he strains his eyes through the darkness of the night mist. He can sense that just beyond the horizon a great brightness is preparing to break forth. 'Arise you sleepers!' 'Shake off your slumber!' he calls. 'Come, and fill your lamp with fresh oil.' 'Trim your wick.' 'Cry out in the streets and do not let your voice be silent!' 'For the coming of the Great King is at hand.' 'Arise and shine for your light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon you. Only wait for the Lord. Be strong, and of a good courage, and wait for the Lord'."
Then, the refrain of the song itself is jubilant, and filled with expectation of Yahweh's promises fulfilled, "If we lift up our voices and call on the Lord He will come. And the nations will see that salvation comes from Zion. O no more waiting the anointing of God has begun. O blind eyes will see as the captives go free. If we lift up our voices, He'll come."
The entire collection is powerful. "Shema," based on Deuteronomy 6 (Israel's "declaration of independence") declares "The Lord our God the Lord is One..." I can scarcely listen to "Holy Holy Holy" or "Worthy" without praying and praising, with tears of rejoicing in our Sovereign God, who holds the events of human history on the grand scale, and in our lives each day, in His hands, and His hands alone. Several of the songs impel dancing unto the Lord, with joy of course, by which we are strengthened.
Listening to this music reminded me how much I have missed Messianic music in general: in immersing myself in it again, I am encompassed anew by the power and passion of what it means to be seed of Abraham, both bearer and beneficiary of a most sacred covenant of El Elyon, The Most High God, who knew me before I was formed in the secret place.
My present circumstances allow me to immerse myself in spiritual music around the clock, including when I am working and sleeping, and I have found that this music, as well as that on SING UNTO THE LORD: The Psalms of David for Daily Living, are helping me to dwell in the presence of the Lord, wherein is fullness of joy... and pleasures for evermore.
Hallelujah! I am so glad I bought this CD!

Excellent.......2007-05-09
The best "Sacred Harp" or "Shape Note" type singing that I've heard. The various renditons are clear and harmonious.
None of that tuning up, barking, la-la's or other cacophonous sounds here.
Brilliant.......2003-09-22
I couldn't recommend a CD more highly. As a musician I was amazed at the variety of the music here and the truly exceptional performances. It's seems we can always rely on Albany to put out the most interesting and highest quality recordings.

Excellent Grieg .......2007-05-13
According to information from the CD notes, Mr Szokolay's father is a composer, his mother a pianist and he started playing piano at the age of five. These dics(there are three by this artist) of Grieg's piano music display idiomatic playing with plenty of depth. The sound is a little forward but not inappropriate for this music. Mr Szokolay has other compact discs on Naxos well worth pursuing and Naxos' prices are right.

stellar talent , original point of view.......2006-12-30
I started listening to David in 1987 on vinyl. I was immediately hooked. I play guitar(badly) and was intrigued by his use of open tunings as if it was a natural extension of himself. He is obviously doing what he is supposed to be doing. (ie, destiny, fate, will, whatever you wish to call it) I would recommend this piece of work as a foundation for his writing and then stay close to the chronological order of releases. Any artist has to grow, or stagnate. David cannot and should not stay just like the David we individually love to hear. His writing is so insightful and brings such a fresh look on things. If you are a thinker, then he is for you. If you like nice shallow pretty music, go elsewhere. That is not what he is about. Above all else, go to a live show! This CD(originally an album) is the least produced recording and has a great simplicity of sound. If you love this one you will buy the next two or three for sure!
IF you're already a fan: / If you're not a fan yet:.......2002-02-01
If you're a David Wilcox fan already:
LIKE the rest of D.W.'s work, this is good, simple music,
meshed with stunningly well-written lyrics.
UNLIKE D.W.'s other work, you should read the CD's liner-notes BEFORE listening to the CD. Without the insights provided in the liner notes, you will almost certainly fail to catch the double-meanings woven into the title track, and the personal significance (in David Wilcox's life) of many of the other songs' themes.
If you've never heard David Wilcox before:
David Wilcox sounds alot like James Taylor: an almost-conversational male voice, singing over accoustic guitar and other quiet-ish instruments.
This format allows the words to get to us, without having to fight through a wall of sound.
That's good for us, because David Wilcox's lyrics are 1) the best part of his music, and 2) stunningly well-written and insightful.
David Wilcox's lyrics are head and shoulders above any other lyrics I have ever heard. They resonate with clever imagery and keen insight into personal relationships.
David writes primarily about relationships or reminiscences. His songs are alot like the conversations you might have had with your best friend. Unlike other lyricists, who seem trapped in a single theme ("love songs", "Let's go get drunk", "I'm so lonely since my horse died", or "Aren't I wonderful ?"), David manages to write intelligent, entertaining, and compassionate pieces about many, many kinds of relationship: Settling down, breaking up, buying the beat-up car you had while you were in high-school, turning middle-aged, being a teenager, feeling "different from the norm"...and so on.
David's music will not club you over the head with HIS lifestyle, but you WILL feel that the music is in tune with your own lifestyle. You won't find references to huntin' dogs and moonshine (like Jeff Foxworthy's humor), or overt religous messages (like Amy Grant's songs), or any other imagery that might make you feel distanced from the author. In fact, after listening to most of David Wilcox's work, I cannot definitively say what David's religion might be, ..But I DO feel, and I suspect that you will also feel, that he's the sort of person who has keen insights into various stages of life and personal relationships, and has a splendid talent for communicating those insights in an engaging way.
If you enjoy James Taylor, then you'll LOVE David Wilcox.
Buying a CD by David Wilcox is like gaining a one-way friendship with a stable, thoughtful, quietly entertaining person.
great debut.......2000-11-15
If you like complex, yet simple acoustic music...tune in to this one. David Wilcox finally released this on CD...I had the tape for a few years. It's full of metaphors. Most of the songs are several levels deep. My personal favorites...Come Away To Sea, Daddy's Money, and Santa Fe. It's Almost Time is also a great tune, but the version on "How Did You Find Me Here" is superior.
I"m glad you recorded this CD.......1999-01-16
Back in 1989 I was living in Denver Colorado and I heard Daddy's Money and The Nightshift Watchman on a Boulder AM station. when I called the station to find out what album these songs were on, the DJ said that these songs were lent to the station as demo's and weren't currently on the market. David, your quick wit and your keen insight to the human soul makes your music so enjoyable. I now have all six of your CD's and I enjoy them all. Keep up the good work.
David recommended this to me!.......1999-01-13
Walking in the Atlanta airport, I passed someone who looked familiar. It took a few seconds but I recognized David Wilcox from a CD cover photo. Taking a chance I turned toward him and said, "David Wilcox?" He stopped, smiled, and waved me over. What a nice guy! He seemed genuinely interested in having a conversation with a fan. He mentioned that this CD may be available soon and that I might enjoy it. He was right. This early material is easy-to-listen-to, relaxing accostic folk. "It's Almost Time" remains one of my favorite David Wilcox songs. Thanks for the recommendation, David. I hope to run into you again sometime. Happy travels!

Product Description
Sweet Seraphic Fire brings together two unique bodies of American sacred song: choral compositions from the New England singing-school tradition and the most popular Evangelical Protestant hymn texts in historic American use. In the late eighteenth century the New England singing-school movement produced America's first great sacred-music style, employing several genres of unaccompanied four-part choral compositions with the melody in the lead (tenor) part. The enormous popularity of singing-school music also promoted a canon of hymn texts shared across America's competing Evangelical Protestant denominations. This recording contains neglected masterworks from the New England singing school that also helped to create the American hymn canon. Marking a more recent turn in this process, we have also included some new settings of traditional Evangelical lyrics written by leaders in the revival of singing-school music that has blossomed in the Northeast since 1976. ! Selection of pieces for this recording was determined by correlating "The Norumbega Harmony"--our collection of one hundred six historic New England singing-school compositions and thirty contemporary works in traditional style--with a list of the three hundred most frequently printed hymn texts in America from 1737 to 1960. --Stephen Marini
