Beyond Belief
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The hard-rockin' Petra has been banging on guitars and drums for the Lord for more than 25 years. This 1990 release proved to be one of the band's most successful efforts and helped Petra win four Dove awards, including Group of the Year. Beyond Belief abounds with power chords, catchy hooks, and the kind of user-friendly rock that has made Petra a household name in the contemporary Christian music marketplace. When not shaking the walls, Petra slows it down for the title track and the wistful "Love," both handled ably by singer John Schlitt. Producers John and Dino Elefante (remember Kansas anyone?) let the boys go for the most part in rave-ups like "Armed and Dangerous" and "Underground," but listen closely to the Kansaslike keyboards on both tracks. --Michael Lyttle

Customer Reviews:
This is great stuff..........2007-04-22
I am a big fan of Petra, but I would admit that they have had a rather erratic history in terms of album releases. Without question, Beyond Belief is one of the absolute high points during the years of Petra when John Schlitt was singing lead vocals. And many would argue, with considerable justification, that this is the greatest album of Petra's storied career and, one of the best albums in the history of Christian music. I would agree.
The title track remains my favorite song on this particular album, and one of my favorite five Petra songs of all-time. It's got a great beat, a great melody, and a great message.
There are several other solid hard-driving songs, including "Armed and Dangerous," "I am On the Rock," and "Seen and Not Heard."
But Petra's strength is their ability to cover the full gamut of musical expression, and my other favorites on this album are several of the ballads. "Love" has some great haunting vocals. And "Creed" is another of Petra's best songs, with very powerful lyrics.
Of course, there are some elements of this album that now sound rather dated, especially the overuse of synthesizer sounds which was the rage in the 80's and early 90's. And the picture of the band on the inside liner is nothing short of hysterical. That's some priceless hair!!
Quite simply, this is a great album from a great band. If you're new to Petra and want to experience the breadth of their music, from driving rock music to beautiful ballads, this is a perfect album to try. And if you consider yourself a fan, you must have this album. This one gets my highest recommendation.
All time favorite!.......2007-02-28
This cd is one of my all-time favorites. Try to find the movie if you can--a bit predictable, but still really good.
A Personal Favorite.......2006-09-12
"Beyond Belief" is the first and only Petra album that I've purchased in which I sat down and listened to the entire album and loved it immediately. With other Petra albums, it always takes me a few weeks, months, and, in the case of "No Doubt," years before I really come to love them for what they are.
This particular album is one of the best arena rock records around, secular or Christian. Songs like "Armed and Dangerous" and "Underground" beg to be heard in a large football stadium where the fans can sing along with lead vocalist, the underrated John Schlitt. Also, "Love" is an amazing ballad that ranks right up there with Journey's "Faithfully" (although the Love Petra is talking about is completely different than that which Journey speaks of).
"Seen And Not Heard" sounds very, very similar to Kiss' "Heaven's On Fire" as far as the chorus goes, but it's also one of my personal favorites from this album. Perhaps it's because this particular song gives Christians a kick in the pants to quit talking the talk and start walking the walk. "I Am On The Rock" and "Last Daze" are also excellent tunes.
Overall, I'd highly recommend that new fans of Petra purchase this album and one or two of the compilation CD's out there to get a decent overview of this band at their best. Their lineup and sound have changed considerably throughout the years and they have officially retired as a group, but Petra's music will be around for a long time to come.
If you have never heard Petra before, you're in for a surprise. Fans of Queen, Journey, Foreigner, Kansas, and Styx will very likely enjoy this group. They weren't around for so long because of luck, they're just that good.
One of their best.......2006-09-12
You won't find many albums with a stronger opening four tracks than this one. A fantastic CD that you won't be fast-forwarding much.
Oddly enough, this wasn't my favourite of theirs.......2006-09-08
Oddly enough, this album wasn't my favourite Petra album (that would go to 1986's 'Back to the Street', followed closely by 1995's 'No Doubt' and 1991's 'Unseen Power'). This is Petra's most commercially successful and accessible album. There are power chords and riffs aplenty, and lots to rock about (and a few ballads thrown in for good measure).
My personal favourite would be the 'dark horse' "Last Daze", the hardest song on the album with an extended solo towards the end, with lyrics that lament those who turn from the faith. Sure, there are the classics like 'Beyond Belief', 'Creed', 'Underground' and 'Armed And Dangerous', but this song just plain rocks!
I struggled with whether to give this album 4 stars or 5. Ultimately I settled with 4 because while it's good and there are no missteps on this album, it's just not as original or experimental as efforts like 'Beat the System' or 'Unseen Power'. Also, the guitar riffs are basically, from what I can hear, a lot of power chords. The result is pleasing enough to listen to, but not very experimental technically.
Perhaps these are minor qualms. This really is a good album, with plenty of good songs. I'd highly recommend it!

Product Description
Brian Flemming's controversial film provokes strong emotions in the viewer with its no-holds-barred exploration of faith. "Jesus didn't exist" is just a beginning for this groundbreaking, sacred-cow-exploding movie, which is sure to leave many viewers shaken and reaching for what's left of the tethers of their religious belief. And they shouldn't look to this soundtrack for much comfort. The chilling "I Don't Wanna Wait" evokes the paranoia of the "Rapture-ready" crowd that is memorably lampooned in Flemming's movie. The refrain in "Is This The Real Thing?" only reminds one of the doubt the movie so effectively plants in the viewer. But there are some humorous breaks. Ritualistic percussion and verbal nonsense propel "A Way Cuddy Dis 3000." And just try to keep a straight face while listening to "The God Who Wasn't There"--a techno re-imagining of the saccharine "Footprints" story found in Christian bathrooms everywhere. As compelling, stirring and fun as the movie on which it is based, "The God Who Wasn't There" is that rare soundtrack that both stands on its own and extends the experience of the film.

I just had to buy this CD after watching the movie and realizing that Thievery Corporation was one of the bands. I love their music and the music on this CD. It's good stuff!!
Great Music, Wonderful Soundtrack and the Tapping of Toes!.......2005-11-23
Who would believe that the soundtrack to "The God Who Wasn't There" would cause the involuntary tapping of toes? Perhaps even a couple of dance steps!
This is music that not only blends beautifully with the documentary it accompanies, but is also something to pop into the CD player for your listening pleasure. The very first track, "I Don't Wanna Wait" starts your toes tapping. You are definitely swaying to the music with "Every Single Day." Even "The God Who Wasn't There" (which has a fun parody of Footprints in the Sand) has you being pulled in by the beat. By the time you get to "Ten Turntables and a Slide Trombone," you're hooked.
Who knew that electronica/re-mix could appeal to such a broad age range? DJ Madson apparently did. It seamlessly spans many musical genres to please everyone.
This is not just great music, it's also something to which you should give thought while you're listening. If you've seen the movie, you almost "see" video clips and smile. If you haven't seen the movie (and you should!), this CD is still upbeat and, well, toe tapping goodness!
THIS IS A WARNING, DONT BE FOOLED..........2005-07-04
I bought this album because I am a hugh kathleen hanna and le tigre fan. I saw that they had, what I thought was, a new song on this soundtrack. What they don't tell you is that it is just a sample from the le tigre song "fake french". I am not a "techno" fan but do appreciate good electronic music but this just sounds like some cheesy early nineties crap. I think it is terrible...but that is just my opinion. It reminds me of a cd you would buy off some shady vender in new york for like $5. It looks like it too. (...)
This is a warning.
A great soundtrack to a great documentary.......2005-06-06
I was lucky to see the premiere of The God Who Wasn't There in San Francisco. Be sure and see it!

POWER TRIO / HEAVY BLUES ROCK BLISS.......2006-05-25
Imagine a cross between FREE / GOVERNMENT MULE and HENDRIX and you'd be close. Awesome tracks that capture the essence of the best of POWER TRIO ROCK without sounding retro or jaded. YNGSTROM is an incredible guitarist that covers HENDRIX as well or better than anyone, but here he also shows what a great writer / musiscian he is in his own right. Memorable musik with unforgettable guitar work, whats not to like.
If you are into the guitar, this has to be in your collection.
I have just bought a package of GROOVEYARD releases and urge anyone with a passion for the guitar to do the same. JOE ROMAGNOLA ( of GROOVEYARD ) is one of the few people in the musik business that keeps the guitar alive. If you are passionate about real musik in general and the guitar specificaly, support this label.
