Veteran Christian band Newsong decided to include the sentimental ballad, "Christmas Shoes," as a bonus track on 2000's Sheltering Tree, unaware that the almost O. Henry-esque tale about a young boy attempting to buy a pair of shoes as a Christmas present for his dying mother would blow up into a massive hit. So overwhelming was the response to that song (it landed atop Billboard's Adult Contemporary Chart) that the group decided to fashion an entire holiday album around it, naturally titling it Christmas Shoes. In addition to the heart-wrenching title track, the contemporary Christian rockers serve up some beautifully arranged versions of cherished favorites such as "Away in the Manger/God Rest Ye, Merry Gentleman," "The First Noel," and "What Child Is This," as well as an impish, rather histrionic version of "You're a Mean One, Mr.Grinch" which should tickle the underage set. Newsong have also written a number of well-crafted, infectious holiday songs that don't bludgeon you with heavy-handed inspirational messages, but instead shine brightly with the true spirit of the holiday. --Jaan Uhelszki

This CD is wonderful and my family loved it. It is a great cd to add to my Christmas Collection.
I wish there was an option for No stars.......2006-12-26
I think the people that hate this song have realized that this is just a feeble attempt to tug at the heart strings of people during the holiday season. The song is so poorly constructed and over emotional it may make many people that the song is a joke of some sort. This is what is truly sad because this is a serious song.
It sounds to me like a bunch of people sat around in a room and said, "lets write a really depressing Christmas song". Lets see why do we need? How about a dieing mother? Great! Lets make her die on Christmas eve! Awesome. We need something else. How about a dirty poor kid who is trying to buy her a present. Fantastic! This is going to be a great song.
If you are touched by this song, well I guess you are looking past the composers obvious attempt to create emotion out of issues that are serious but when you combine so many of them into one song, it becomes nothing more than sap.
I think most of us realize that there are many people who are poor and sick in this world and that the things many of take for granted are serious concerns for many. No song should have to remind us of that. Be thankful for what you have and be mindful of those who don't have.
PERSPECTIVES.......2006-12-19
I believe those that have "dissed" this recording, and particularly the title song, have failed to understand it fully. At no point does it suggest Jesus is concerned about footwear; the song simply reflects a young child's perspective and his love for his mother.
Also, I find the assertion of this song being "schmaltzy" or deliberately gut wrenching to be curious. Consider "Gift of the Magi", Little Drummer Boy, Dickens "A Christmas Carol". Consider the true story of the Passion and Resurrection of Christ. Do these not touch the heart?
Christmas Shoes Song - A Story of Hope, Love and Life.......2006-11-28
There seems to be more cynics at Christmas than any other holiday. They take the songs and hope of the Christmas season and try to degrade it into something that is cheap and dirty. The "Christmas Shoes" is about hope, love and life. That is what this season is about, not about the world degrading the hope of people. Yes the song is sad, but it also about what love can do. Many Christmas songs are like this song, speaking not only of sadness and loss, but also of the hope of the world to see a better year ahead. That is what the Christmas Season is - hope for us all and a sense of love for others.
As for this song being just a Christian song, many people have not listened to the song closely. The song does not mention Christian tenets. It does mention Jesus and God, but as sense of hope for the Characters of the song. The song was not meant to beat anyone over the head.
Listen to the "Christmas Shoes" and other songs on the album for the beauty of the music and the hope that the world can be beautiful, even when life is not always happy or as great as our expectations. The music will lift your spirits if you let it.

Sheltering Tree.......2007-01-16
I have really enjoyed my CD--Sheltering Tree! All of the songs are good. It arrived in a short amount of time and had no problems with the order.
Beautiful melodies-- don't miss this album!.......2006-09-08
Newsong has been around for over two decades and with each release seems to get better and better. Michael O'Brien's vocals and songwriting contributions add a soulfulness and depth to the music and fit in incredibly well with an already amazing group. The songs on this CD are pure, meolody-driven pop and are songs that will lift you up. They're catchy melodies... ones that will no douby bounce around in your mind for hours after the CD has stopped spinning.
"The Christmas Shoes" is a tender song about a young girl wanting a beautiful pair of shoes to give to her sick mother, should she "meet Jesus tonight." It has garnered attention from the mainstream and has become a contemporary Christmas classic. "Wide Open," a personal favorite, has a beautiful melody and uses the imagery of Christ crucified both literally and in his willingness to die "with arms wide open" for all. In short, this is a great CD. It is encouraging and uplifting and a must for any Christian music fan!
Absolutely Unmissable........2006-06-18
Newsong is definitely a pop group, and there's no denying that. I think you will like this album if you can appreciate the pop side of CCM. If not, go buy some Disciple, Kutless, TFK, Sanctus Real etc., because this album is not for you. I'm not "dissing" anyone here. It ALL depends on your preferred musical style.
As a teenage music fan, it's not uncommon that when I say things like "I like U2" or "Newsong isn't bad" I get funny looks. "Aren't they old?" is usually the response to that. Pop is more a preteen or adult thing. So think of this as a review from a different point of view.
There's something right on about this cd that most cds don't do right: it's just like a good book. Its entrance and exit are captivating: it starts out with an explosion of multiple vocals singing "I do believe it's gonna be another red letter day" and ends with a child singing the final chorus line of "Christmas Shoes". It has climaxes, low points, different characters (multiple vocalists), and the ratio of upbeat songs to slower songs is about equal.
Despite the fact that pop is not my favorite, I cannot possibly recommend passing this up. It is one of my most played cds ever, though I may not always admit it. The lyrics are really good and have very few flaws, the singing is incredible, the music is passable...this cd is overall a great buy.
GREAT CD OF NEWSONG.......2004-04-23
I JUST GOT THIS CD YESTERDAY AND I LISTENED TO IT AND THE WHOLE ALBUM IS GREAT BUT MY FAVORITE SONG IS "I AM NOTHING WITHOUT CHRIST " BECAUSE IN THIS LIFE IN WHICH WE ARE LIVING WE ARE NOTHING WITHOUT CHRIST ! MY SECOND FAVORITE IS " DON'T IT MAKE YOU WANNA GO HOME " TRULEY WE HAVE A LOT TO LOOK FORWARD TOO WHEN JESUS CHRIST SPLITS THE EASTERN SKIES AND TAKES US HOME OR IF WE GO HOME BY THE WAY OF DEATH ANYWAY WE GET THERE WILL SURLY WORTH EVERYTHING WE HAVE GONE THRU IN THIS LIFE !! WAY TO GO NEWSONG !!!!
Very deep and touching.......2004-01-12
I remember first hearing "The Christmas Shoes" on the radio probably 3 years back when I was in the car coming home from something. It really had a good, driving melody that touched me instantly. A few years after that I downloaded it and put it onto a CD and love it. This song will go good with the album that Newsong has put together -- I recommend it.

Carols of Christmas Past.......2003-12-24
If you're tired of Christmas songs after hearing so many of the same ones over and over and are ready for something new here is the solution.
Zola Van's beautiful melodies give the Christmas spirit a new dimension. Carols from past centuries, seemingly lost in time, are brought to the present and surely must sound more beautiful than ever before.
These selectins are calming and soothing to the nerves. Highlights here are "Huron Carol", "The Boar's Head Carol" and "The Dutch Carol". But every song is played with remarkable excellence. For those longing to hear something more familiar, the timeless carol "Silent Night" completes this magnificent set of piano solos.
from Solo Piano Publications.......2003-11-08
When I slipped "Carol: A Christmas Journey" into my CD player, I expected to hear a collection of the usual Christmas pieces and carols with Zola Van's inspired solo piano interpretation. She had told me that this album was going to be different, and different it is! What sets "Carol" apart from other collections is the darkness and moodiness of the album. At first, it seemed almost bleak, but the more I listen, the more I hear the hope and anticipation in the music. Most of the carols are extremely old, going as far back as the twelfth century, and come from various European countries and traditions (one is Indian/Canadian). Van really did her homework on this album, researching the origins of the music as she collected the songs, and writing a short history of each piece in the liner notes. With all of the Christmas music I listen to and teach, I was amazed that I was familiar with only a small number of the carols, and because the collection is so unusual, I would think it would be easy to listen to it year-round without feeling silly about playing a Christmas album in, say, April while you're preparing your taxes!
The three familiar carols are "Coventry Carol," "Bring a Torch Jeanette, Isabella," and "Silent Night," all played lovingly true to the originals, but with fresh interpretations. "A Virgin Most Pure," is a hauntingly beautiful carol that tells of the prophecy and of three journeys to Bethlehem. Van's use of heavy chords in the deep bass of the piano accentuates the mystery and darkness of many of the pieces, this one included. "Children's Song of the Nativity" is a bit lighter, full of innocence and questions about traveling to Bethlehem - how far is it? what will we do when we get there? - a very sweet vignette. My favorite track is probably the darkest one of all, "Huron Carol". The words come from Huron droning, and were set to an Indian/Canadian tune by a Jesuit missionary who taught the Huron and Wendot in a wilderness outpost in Quebec. Van does an exquisite job with this piece - to the point that you can almost feel the chilling winds blowing through it. "The Boar's Head Carol" is a bit lighter and more festive. "The Dutch Carol" comes from about 1599, and is delicate, melancholy, and very beautiful. "Ding Dong Merrily on High" is probably the most upbeat piece - a dance that servants and peasants would perform for their employers' entertainment.
A very unusual collection of holiday music, "Carol" is certainly an antidote for too much Santa Claus. It makes you realize how far back our holiday traditions go, and the vastly different ways in which Christ's birth has been celebrated over the centuries. Historically, this is a fascinating collection - I learned so much from the liner notes. Musically, it is a spiritual and introspective journey to hear these haunting melodies played with such care and emotion. Zola Van has done an outstanding job with this album. Just be aware that this is not a happy-go-lucky album of "Jingle Bells" and "Santa Claus is Coming to Town."
Really Big Shoes.......2003-11-01
What I liked most was the powerful, suspenseful style of play, swirling with emotion, her embellishing style radiating a natural grandeur. I also liked the way her arrangements seemed to get to the heart of these Christmas melodies without being too precious. Her realization seemed to be much more about integrating Christmas into her musical vision than about trying to be a part of the sweet, tinkling chorus we'll be hearing soon enough. And it should be noted that she applied her style to a relatively unusual selection of carols, so there were significant segments where I could enjoy Christmas music without it being something I've heard over and over.
I found her treatments to be both relaxing and moving. And mind you, this--with the stereo on the fritz and my boombox at Lost Pines with my wife on a training mission--was first heard on the tinkly little computer speakers. I soon had to graduate it to the DVD player in the den to get the full surround, but its power is evident whatever the volume or acoustics.
I like this one a lot.

Mystical Christmas Journey.......2003-10-19
"I am a simple traveler. I am transported adrift a gentle, melodic seduction across hundreds of years to this place. Here in a shroud of feudal protection is common man, with reasoning and conduct conforming to his day, desperately seeking beauty, purity, and gentleness in an otherwise brutal world. Beyond dark stone walls of medieval thought, the allure of the beautiful virgin and the child-king's humble birth is the cherished focus of desire and intrigue." ~Zola Van
I first heard Zola Van's radiant music on a CD titled "The HeartAid Project." Her music captures hope, wonder, kindness and beauty. The fluidity of the fragile notes are balanced by the strength and depth of the message. Crisp, delicate and heart-felt notes mingle with images of Christmas memories and dreams.
There are lesser-known carols you might be hearing for the first time and a few beloved favorites that have survived in the hearts and minds of people across the centuries.
1. A Virgin Most Pure - Poignant and delicate rendition of an Old English carol.
2. Coventry Carol: the Holy Innocents - A 16th Century English carol with familiar strains and has grief and love intertwined.
3. Children's Song of the Nativity - A piece filled with questions and expectation. "How far is it to Bethlehem? Not very far. Shall we find the stable room lit by a star?" Zola plays this piece with precision and deep understanding. It is pure and beautiful.
4. Carol of the Birds is from Bas-Quercy, France. The peasants of the time told legends of enchanted animals who could speak on Christmas Eve. I can see birds swooping and soaring and following the "noel star."
5. The Wexford Carol is an Irish Carol known as the "Enniscorthy Carol."
6. Huron Carol is an Indian/Canadian tune - One of my favorites because it almost foretells sadness. Zola shows the full force of her interpretation as she alternates between spectacular lightness of hand and rich intensity. Zola has truly captured a moment in time with exquisite detail.
7. The Boar's Head Carol - A piece to take your breath away. The notes almost seem to be floating through the air like an invigorating breeze.
8. Joyeaux Noel - A French Carol sung at New Year's in the 1400s. Zola captures mystery and magic. You will recognize this sweet dream of new beginnings and hope for the future. This piece might delve into your memory and remind you of your most beautiful Christmas memories. I love how Zola tantalizes the listener with tiny raindrop notes and then just sends a downpour of notes to refresh your spirit.
9. Bring a Torch Jeanette, Isabella - A 15th Century French Provincial Carol with a playful twist. In the depth of night I can see little torches swirling in circles as Jeanette playfully dances instead of hurrying with the torches. There is a touch of humor here. It is as if time stops and this song could play forever.
10. The Dutch Carol - The beauty here is a solitary angel flying high above the earth. In the stillness of the night you can here "How sweet is love." The most comforting carol on this CD. It wraps you in warmth and you almost feel protected from all harm. Zola's playing dissolves all stress, this is a piece you could easily fall asleep to. As beautiful as a lullaby with a depth of caring that speaks of love and sweet dreams.
11. Ding Dong Merrily on High - A lighthearted piece. The emphasis here seems to be a joyous celebration.
12. Poverty - Spectacular depth and understanding. Zola shows her sensitivity in this interpretation. I hear a message so subtle it almost begs not to be explained but only to be felt with the heart. Perhaps this piece mostly evokes a sense of awe. We gaze at the tiny gift sleeping in the straw and are amazed at how a small child could be the hope of the world.
13. Silent Night - Instantly recognizable and a combination of all we love at Christmas Time. Zola plays this carol with an intricate beauty befitting this captivating story of heavenly peace.
Truly, I've never heard a collection of piano solos so delicate in magical beauty. Zola Van's music will quickly capture your heart. The universal messages of hope, peace and love have been captured in her interpretations of each carol. I highly recommend "Carol: A Christmas Journey" for the Holiday Season or anytime when you need a musical escape. It is timeless in its appeal and is a much needed escape from the harried pace of the holiday season or everyday life.
You may also enjoy "Paint the Forest Winter," and "River to River Trail: The Hike."

A smooth ride to the holidays with this recording!.......2003-10-14
I have had the pleasure and priviledge of listening and reviewing Zola Van's 2 previuos releases. I am proud to say the the third release is just a entertaining as the other 2. Zola Van's talent seems with out limits in this release.
There are 13 tracks, totaling over 50 minutes of some of the best piano music out there today. The complete collection of Christamas music has you listening to all time favorites like Silent Night, which is my personal faovrite on this album.
You have some lesser known releases such as Carol of the Birds and the Wexford Carol. Even though the music is lsated for the holiday season, and it would make a perfect holiday gift, this cd could and should be listened to almost any timeof the year.
Having been given the rare oppurtunity to hear music that not only calms the situation but also relaxes you at the same is one of life simple pleasures. This recording is gentle in sound but large in volume as the music will resonante for more that just the Winter season.
Zola Van has given the listener a true gift of the holiday spirit - excellent job!

4 1/2 Stars: Great Collection of Alternative Christmas Tunes.......2006-01-03
Inspired by The Beatles Fan Club Christmas EPs and Phil Spector's Christmas LP, popmeisters The Shoes put together this compilation of 16 bands, most relatively obscure, and came up with some pure pop delights. This Yule punch bowl is filled with jingly-jangly guitars, Beatlesesque melodies and harmonies, Spector Wall of Sound sleigh bells, and more to brighten your holiday listening. Standouts are many, including The Shoes' "This Christmas," Bill Lloyd's Marshall Crenshaw-ish "Underneath the Christmas Tree," The Idea's Byrdsy "It's About That Time," Matthew Sweet's "Baby Jesus," and The Cavedogs' "Three Wise Men And A Baby," which sounds like an outtake from The Beatles White Album. - Dennis MacDonald, AMG
This one rocks!.......2002-12-05
I searched everywhere for this CD after hearing the Shoes song "This Christmas" in a store. It is so beautiful and non-christmasy as is the rest of the CD.
I am a big fan of Christmas music, but as another reviewer mentioned, I can't stand anything with sappy kids choruses or gimmicky tricks.
This CD has some of my favorite performers doing interesting songs.
As a side note, it is possible to get this CD new from the label. Its on Black Vinyl records out of Zion Illinois.
Enjoy!!!

The Only Holiday Album You'll Ever Need.......2002-02-28
I'm not a big fan of holiday or Christmas music and albums. They tend to be sappy affairs full of renditions of "classics" made worse by somebody's latest "improvements". Not this album. The songs are all originals and hold up quite well as songs, not just "holiday" songs. 'Tis a hard album to find though.
I first heard Material Issue's "Merry Christmas Will Do" whilst I was working out in the gym and recognized Jim Ellison's vocals and thus my quest began. That one song alone would be worth the price of the CD but you get other great songs. Spooner's "The Saddest Time of the Year" is absolutely gorgeous, full of longing and wistfulness. One word of advice to those who would record Christmas songs: listen to this song and if you can't record something as good as this, do us all a favor and don't bother. It just doesn't get any better than this for Christmas tunes.
Other standouts on this album are Shoes' "This Christmas" which features a very active bass line, "It's About Time" by The Idea, and Kelley Ryan's "It's Not Christmas". Really there's not a bad song on this CD although it may take some time to warm up to the Cavedogs' "Three Wise Men and a Baby (Xmas Song)" - I mean I like it 'cause it's offbeat and all but to each his own.
One other thing - the cuteness factor is kept to a minimum so there's not a lot of kids singing badly just to be cute on this CD. That seems to be limited to one song here - The Puddles' "The Christmas List" and it's not even that annoying like most kid songs are. All in all, this is just an excellent collection of tunes that you'll be listening to even when it's not holiday season, like I have been this week. That makes it the only Christmas album you'll ever need.
Yu'le Love This Cd !.......2001-12-06
Without a doubt my favorite Christmas CD. I had only known a few of these groups (Shoes, Matthew Sweet, MaterialIssue) when I bought this from a bargain bin. What a bargain! Every song is top notch and original, too, I do believe. An absolute classic for anyone who likes popular music. You may actually want to listen to it long after Christmas season is over. It is that good.

Customer Reviews:
Not Not-Worthy!.......2004-04-01
... these big box sets are not for the casual fan. The price tags are pretty steep but you get a big hunka Elvis for the money. And it's true that some of these CDs are hard to find for some reason, especially the interview and essential series CDs. Also, I like the big poster (in the red box) and the suede cases themselves, but I'm a die-hard fan and collector of all-things (well, a-lot-of-things) Elvis.
Reconsider, Baby.......2003-08-06
The 2 mammoth 30CD box sets released by RCA ('The Collection' aka 'The Red Suede Collection', and 'The Blue Suede Shoes Collection') have been harshly criticized by some Elvis fans as unnecessary and just another in a very long line of "cashing in" projects by his record label. And while that is probably true - repackaging old material for a quick profit is something that has never been beneath RCA (or the Colonel, or Elvis, for that matter) - let's not throw out the baby with the bathwater. First of all, RCA should get a little credit for the many worthy Elvis projects and box sets released in the past few years. Sure, they were money makers but most of them were put together in a first class manner - unlike much of the stuff released during Elvis's lifetime.
Neither 30CD box contains anything new other than the 2 interview CDs (w/Elvis, M/M Presley, & The Colonel) both of which are interesting and somewhat rare (there are also a couple of keepsakes: a nice poster, a first-day issue Elvis envelope & stamp, and the suede boxes themselves). The CDs included in each box, however, are some of his best, including several that are now either out-of-print or very hard-to-find. For the red box that means the expanded versions of the first six movies (when his soundtracks actually kicked), the expanded 'Elvis Is Back!' (always one of his best, now remarkably improved with the addition of the 6 tracks from the 3 singles recorded at the same time as the album), 'Back In Memphis' (part 2 of the excellent American Studios sessions), the single disc version of 'That's The Way It Is', and 'Today' (one of his best studio efforts in the 70's). For the blue box, the main draws after the interview CD are the hard-to-find 'A Hundred Years From Now' and 'Such A Night', volumes 4 and 6, respectively, in the great 'Essential Elvis' series of alternate takes and unreleased recordings. Volume 6 is the best in the series so far.
So, both of the 30CD box sets have more to offer than is apparent at first glance, although the price tag is pretty hefty. But unless RCA decides to reissue some of these titles in the future, this may be the only place to find them.
Why postpone the inevitable?.......2003-01-14
Any Elvis fan will tell you that once you get started, you'll have to have it all, or at least as much as you can. This extra special set allows you to get everything you need at once, as well as some special extras that you just can't find anywhere else. Be the first on your block. . .

Christmas Shoes.......2001-12-17
There are few voices that I have heard that blend as well in harmonies as these young ladies have managed to do. I have heard this song only once, and have been on the quest to find it since. In many places of the world, fighting is the one thing that is on everyone's mind. However, this song, with its realistic words, puts all of life into the simple perspective of child about to lose what is most precious to him. A nice switch from the lack of love that our world seems to have today.
