Michael Tait's first release outside of dc Talk is not really a solo effort. In fact, Tait has invested his many talents with three kindred spirits (guitarist Pete Stewart, drummer Chad Chapin, and brother Lonnie on bass) to form, oddly enough, a band called Tait. And Empty is not just about Michael Tait simply flexing his musical muscle outside of dc Talk. It's a melting pot of ideas that produces enough smoke and fire to cook up one winner after another. From the no-holds-barred opening rocker, "Alibi," to the final track, an emotionally wrenching "Unglued," Tait not only sounds like a band, but has the soul and feel of one as well. The sound of a real band comes through in the alluring, hook-laden "All You Got," the riveting "Talk About Jesus," and the anti-racist, anthemic "American Tragedy." There's tightness in the sonic bond here that can't be had through any allegiance with studio musicians. No, Tait is a band, and Empty is anything but. --Michael Lyttle

Recorded onstage, backstage, in three different hotel rooms, and on a Continental Silver Eagle tour bus during a cross-country 1977 tour, Running on Empty is a paean to life on the road. Jackson Browne's sense of camaraderie extended to the road crew, if "The Load Out," a love song to his roadies, is to be believed. Browne is much more blithe here than in his earlier outings. But Empty also represents a fleeting lighthearted moment for the singer-cum-poet whose concerns became more political than personal after its appearance. Beneath its flippant surface, this disc is a look at the lengths Browne and his friends went to avoid facing the demands of the touring life. What with the frequent drug references, misogynistic references to on-the-fly pairings with women, and the sobering line in the title track--"I look around for the friends I used to pull me through / Looking into their eyes, I see them running, too"--one realizes that Browne was much more comfortable on the road than off. --Jaan Uhelszki

5 out of 5 stars A mirror of the seventies touring life..........2007-07-03

A great album...I haven't any doubt. This album may be considered as a crossroad of the seventies' life of many artists (such as The Eagles). For first, the touring life, wich means to travel along many thousand miles away from home and family. For second, the drugs (problem already reflected in the Eagles' album "Hotel California" of 1976). For third, the emotional mixture of happiness and pain. This album reveals an important message: To enjoy as much as possible the life's best moments, wich are usually very short and pass very quickly...Think about a live concert. When the live concert of your favourite artist is over you can always remember it as an emotional experience, you can listen to the records and watch videos..."and you wake-up in your town" (the final verses of "the load-Out"). By the artist's side things are different. He moves through many towns wich begin "to look the same". When the live concert finishes "is just another town along the road". The only moment of relax and happiness is when the artis plays his songs on the stage, like a dialog between him ad his public, his fans, his friends. The touring life has its lightly moments during these meetings with millions of friends through the world, who love his music "tonight the people were so fine"..."We just pass the time in our hotel rooms and wander'round backstage...TILL THOSE LIGHTS COME UP AND WE HEAR THAT CROWD AND WE REMEMBER WHY WE CAME!" (from the song "the load out"). The same aspect it may be found in te song "the road", wich reflect a static moment of the touring life, when "the load out" reflects a dinamic, a traveling aspect (driving all night to another town)of a rock band's life. The indicated songs are the main guideline to enjoy the album...The other songs speak by themselves...specially by guitar, piano and vocal performances. One thing is for sure: Jackson Browne in this album sings by his heart.
I own it on CD and recently I recovered my uncle's 30 years old vinyl, wich I cleaned as best as possible and this one actually I use to play, to sense the past nostalgic seventies feeling.

5 out of 5 stars REMASTER ????.......2007-04-11

Fantastic work again from Jackson! My main purpose for entering this "review" is to plead with the label for a REMASTERED version....

3 out of 5 stars It's OK.......2006-11-04

I've never been a huge Jackson Browne fan, but Running on Empty isn't bad. The best cuts are the title track, You Love the Thunder, Cocaine and Stay. But songs like Shaky Town, Rosie & Love Needs a Heart are fillers. You've got to give the guy credit for trying something new with the live album, too - none of these songs had been released on a Jackson Browne album up until this point, and it's a concept album about life on the road. Not half bad, but I can think of better singer-songwriters (cough cough Joni Mitchel)

4 out of 5 stars Running on Empty.......2006-06-30

A classic I will always remember and love to sing along to.

5 out of 5 stars the experiment succeeds.......2005-10-31

there aren't too many artists who have ventured into the arena of live/studio mixes, quite like this one. the only other one i can really think of is rattle and hum. and compared to that one, running is vastly superior. this is because running on empty is vastly superior to most any other album in its own right. it just capture life on the road and jackson's own coming of age story in a perfect, succinct expression of seventies rock and roll. a perfect balance of the intimate and the grandiose in rock music.

Album Description

Their second album, 'Riot On An Empty Street' picks up where 'Quiet Is The New Loud' left off. Recorded over the last six months in Bergen, with periodic visits from ex-patriot Erlend - Riot contains more complex arrangements tWith You', 'Know How,' 'Love Is No Big Truth' or first single 'Misread', every track sounds like an old friend coming home to you.

"It's quite style schizophrenic," adds Eirik "We're each inspired by different things so it can be a little confusing, but that seems to be a modern phenomenon, people don't know what genre to put themselves in."

"I'm looking forward to everyone saying it's not as good as the first album," laughs Erlend, "It's funny because two of the songs are from 1998, so it's us, covering us from five years ago," he adds.

The Kings were joined in the studio by hotly tipped Canadian songstress Feist, who appears on two of the albums twelve tracks, the bossa-fuelled 'Know How' where she assists Eirik, and the album's closing track 'The Build Up'- where she duets with Erlend in what is one of the Kings' most stark and beautifully emotive tracks, a rare moment captured in time. Both were big fans of her much-fabled "Red Demos" and she melds perfectly amidst them, bringing an air of added suspense and emotion and of course her majestic voice. "Her voice is amazing", gushes Erlend, "I'm very proud of the 'Build Up', for the first time ever we managed to do something spontaneous, Feist wrote the words an hour before she sung them, and it doesn't sound like anything else we've ever done."

So there you have it. Kings Of Convenience - 2004. A therapist and a superstar singing DJ, an odd couple, but still the best (old) new acoustic band in the world. 'Riot On An Empty Street,' forms their very own republic of two, principality of Eirik and Erlend. A great place to visit again and again.

5 out of 5 stars 6 stars out of 5!!.......2007-06-19

I'm late in discovering this, I know, but better late than never. Kings of Convenience are Norwegian duo Erlend Øye and Eirik Glambek Bøe, and their gentle, caressing guitar driven folk/jazz with wistful harmonies is highly remniscent of Simon & Garfunkel.

"Riot on an empty street" is their sophomore disc and is simply brilliant! With beautiful delicate guitar strumming pushed to the fore, and subtle piano, banjo and string fluorishes, opening cut "Homesick" and the delicate "Cayman islands" represent this fully.

"Misread" is a lilting piano sprinkled jazzy piece which is simply awesome!

As pared down as the general sound is, there is (subtle) variety: "Stay out of trouble" is a horn sprinkled waltz, "Know how" (lovely scratchy guitars) is a Bossa nova styled piece featuring Canadian folkstress Feist harmonising midway through (she appears again on the more mellow "The build up"), while "Sorry or please" (nice jazzy piano and bass, sweeping strings, great horn break) is one of those rare songs (on this disc) featuring audible percussion.

"I'd rather dance with you" is more upbeat, and reminds me of UK singer Chris Rea. "Surprise ice" is a tender spare acoustic ballad with ethereal harmonies in the chorus.

Perfect!!! 6 stars out of 5.

4 out of 5 stars 1+1=Kings of Convenience.......2007-02-04

I bought this album after I heard "I'd Rather Dance with You" on a college radio station while I was cruising the coast of Delaware. It had a simple, very catchy formula, and I naturally prefer music with a folky feel these days. If simplicity is what you are looking for in an album, this is right up your alley. From the lyrics, to the music, to the harmonies themselves, sometimes you don't have to have all the "bells and whistles" to get an album right. It is clean, fresh, and pleasant to the ear. It's also pretty versatile. It's understated enough to not distract you as a background music, but catchy enough to keep your attention in regular rotation. Don't get me wrong, this is a good album, but if you want some folkish rock with a little "swagger," I'd suggest Iron and Wine.

5 out of 5 stars every song is a poem.......2006-11-08

and erlend oye may be the most talented song writer of his generation.

the disk grows better and more nuanced with each listen. the lyrics are outstanding throughout. in this genre of music, it is really difficult to find a better disk (though 'quiet is the new loud' is in the running)

5 out of 5 stars An excellent album from an excellent band.......2006-08-16

I was first introduced to Kings of Convenience by hearing their single "I'd Rather Dance with You" on an online radio station. Since then, I have been absolutely mesmerized by their use of beautiful harmonies and subtle lyrics. It is said that the singers were inspired by Simon and Garfunkel and similar artists, which one can immediately hear in this record (particularly on "Cayman Islands," a track favorite). Standout tracks on this album Cayman Islands, I'd Rather Dance With You, Know-How, and Misread. Overall, this band, and this album, are among the best in my large music collection.

5 out of 5 stars peaceful thoughtful peppy.......2006-08-15

Kings of Convenience is very much Jack Johnson plus Coldplay. Some songs are mellow/sad and others are almost T-Rex with peppiness.

While not overly generous at 55 minutes, the highlights album of the 1987 original Broadway cast recording of Les Miserables is intelligently selected and likely to prove satisfying to most fans. It includes the best-loved numbers of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg's score, beautiful ballads ("Bring Him Home," "I Dreamed a Dream") and rousing anthems ("One Day More," "Do You Hear the People Sing?") alike, but eliminates some choral numbers ("Lovely Ladies"), redundancies ("Red and Black"), and connective tissue that propels the plot along ("Valjean Arrested," "Come to Me (Fantine's Death)"). Sure, a more perfect selection could have lasted longer than half of the two-disc set's 104 minutes by adding "At the End of the Day" and "In My Life," among others, but it's still a good representation on a convenient single disc. Of course, those who always want to re-create the theatrical experience will never be satisfied with a highlights album.

Re-creating their roles from the London production, Colm Wilkinson plays the heroic Valjean and Frances Ruffelle is the despondent Eponine. Randy Graff (Fantine), Terrence Mann (Javert), David Bryant (Marius), Judy Kuhn (Cosette), Michael Maguire (Enjolras), and Leo Burmester and Jennifer Butt (the Thénardiers) fill out the cast. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Time well spent........2005-09-14

Each member of the Les Miserables cast stands to deliver this musical to its audience. Within moments we are transported to France during their Restoration. We experience sadness, laughter and, indeed, want to join in their crusade. The music and deliverance, in my opinion, is excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Great Score, But Highlights Missing Critical Songs.......2005-08-05

Composers Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg's score for "Les Miserables" is simply brilliant and the spectacular Broadway cast, led by Colm Wilkinson, Randy Graff, Terrence Mann, and Frances Ruffelle, help bring this incredible music to life!

While I normally enjoy "highlight" cds, this one clocks in at a mere 55 minutes and could have easily included a couple of additional tunes (thus losing one star). Most notably missing: "At The End Of The Day", "Come To Me", "Red And Black", and "In My Life". The show's most memorable songs, however, are included.

Best tracks:

I Dreamed A Dream
Master Of The House
Stars
Do You Hear The People Sing

Great cast, great score ... even a good buy. But I would suggest the full double-disc score instead.

2 out of 5 stars Buy the full version, please.......2005-01-20

Highlights are never worth it. You will never get the little in-between songs which make a show complete, montages will be cut together badly instead of being full songs as they should be...so much is left out. This is a fantastic show and deserves to be heard in full.

5 out of 5 stars Argh Matey!.......2004-11-22

"Highlights" albums are not the full show, blah blah blah... THIS TAKES UP ONLY ONE SPACE IN YOUR CD RACK INSTEAD OF TWO LIKE THE FULL RECORDING. I rest my case.

On 1976's The Pretender, Jackson Browne confessed to enough distractions from his craft and disenchantment with the world around him to make a candid and contemporary rock album that set an optimistic stage for what was lying on-deck. And though Running On Empty would become Browne's quarter-century meal ticket, it was no favorite to the hard cores who found commercial contrivance in its "rock-star-on-the-road" concept. Yet nearly three decades after its release, the remastered and repackaged live album sounds as innovative and unsullied as ever (complete with a DVD that includes audio of two previously unreleased songs from the era). Recorded on stage, on motel room furniture, and aboard the tour bus, the songs served as Browne's diary of a mad musician, including womanizing in Danny O'Keefe's "The Road," drugs in the Rev. Gary Davis' sermonette "Cocaine" and the enduring anthem of roadies and crowd adoration (and a Top 10 hit), "The Load-Out." Though Browne's commercial appeal would never again rise to this level, his legacy in his generation of popular music was sewn, and the record that put him there is still running on endurance. --Scott Holter

Album Description

Quintessential California singer-songwriter and 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Jackson Browne has created some of the most literate and emotionally resonant compositions in popular music. Rhino's new version of Running on Empty is an incredible sonic reinvention, visually augmented with the brilliant photography of Joel Bernstein, shot during the historic tour on which the album is based.

4 out of 5 stars DVD-AUDIO VERSION.......2007-03-09

A classic album re-mixed in to multi-channel sound. I find the mix subtle but suitable for the music of this disc. The overall sound depth and clarity is a definite step up from the regular CD.

5 out of 5 stars thanks - i'll have a refill........2007-01-28

I don't know what I was hoping to find when I got this dvd. But whatever it was, I was left with the feeling I had found something even more precious. It's the odd glimpse of genius at work - "yeah, we could do it like that", the depth you reach as he shares every breath with you, then takes yours away. And that's just the music. Most of all it's Jackson's intensity, passion and vulnerability exposed in the photos. He is surrounded by great people - musicians, friends, adoring fans. And yet he is alone, empty, the grail for unquenchable thirst. You want to be his fountain. Take another look at this beautiful man. Get to see where the music comes from.

4 out of 5 stars Sound, packaging great! But..........2006-12-19

There's not much more positive to say about this release that others haven't already said. The sound is crisp, packaging great, the bonus tracks on the DVD-Audio disc are fun to have after all these years.

However, I have one major complaint that I'm surprised no one else mentioned: this remaster edits out the first 29 seconds of the lead-off title track. Why on earth would you do that? For those who know the album those 29 seconds are of a restless crowd waiting for Browne and his band to start the show. On an album whose goal was to give a vivid picture of a musician's life on the road, that intro was a crucial lead-off. I can assume the edit was to make the track more immediate; but it strips the power out of the opening for the sake of pandering to America's increasing short-attention span.

If you can live with that edit, this version of the album is well, well, worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Delighted with this DVD-Audio disk.......2006-08-27

I'm not a Jackson Browne fan, in fact I don't own any of his other recordings. The songs are of course familiar from years of FM airplay. What makes this disk so enjoyable is the outstanding sound quality of DVD-A. The performances were excellent, much of which may not have been quite so apparent until now. I own ten DVD-A's and this disk is among the best of them in sound quality.

If you like classic rock in general and Jackson Browne in particular, go ahead and buy this disk for your DVD-A player. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars DVD-A : Running On Empty - simply awesome.......2006-06-30

It was worth the wait for the release, the sound quality for the album is fantastic. Crisp highs, excellent bass. I highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Bad Politics but Great Music.......2006-09-02

Smile Empty Soul will be annoying if you pay attention to the words in This Is War, but their music at its core is excellent. Its not just loud obnoxious noise, they have really good guitars and have some beautiful songs like The Other Side and With This Knife. Maybe its just me but the recording seems a little rough, if they had recorded it well and actually promoted the album more it would have been a great seller and a huge success.

The standouts:

Silhouettes
Nowhere Kids
This Is War
For You
Your Way
The Other Side
With This Knife
Radio In A Hole
All My Problems
I Want My Life

Also I saw them in concert once and they tried to make a political point which was kind of annoying, but again, their awesome music balances the stupid politics out

5 out of 5 stars Finding Soul In Todays Empty Music Industry.......2006-05-19

Modern bands today lack emotion, that simple. It seems as though Smile Empty Soul have found a loop hole around this towering issue, providing some of the most emotional and powerful music of this decade(so far).

"Silhouettes" is a stunning song from the opening notes echoing to the disenchanting lyrics. Some people have found "This War" to either be a geat song or critique it on it's labeling of soldiers and how its making them seem so robotic. You can decide that on your own, on with the songs."For You" is my favorite the lyrics seem so inspired, and the melody though not complicated really puts you in the realm of the songs atmosphere."Your Way" and "Radio In A Hole" are big exceptions in this albums flow. These are the wake up calls for hard rock lovers, instantly booming with this derived energy. If you haven't guessed yes this album is relatively slow paced based upon a clean channeled guitar with alittle twang/crunch.Alot of the riffs base eachother off one another, don't let that be your reason not to buy this many great bands have succeded with this hold up.(Such as Ac/Dc and Nirvana!)

I really enjoyed this album, very refreshing for a change and moving. If you like Nirvana you'll no doubt love this!

5 out of 5 stars Soul indeed. Proof that there can be power in simplicity.......2006-03-26

Smile Empty Soul is my favorite band and has been for a while. Most music purists don't like their simple sound, but I wouldn't expect the average listener to appreciate the true amount of soul and emotion in their songs.

The insturmentals are very simple, yes, but they do not sound awful by any means, so I fail to see what is so bad about them. The lyrics are simplistic, and many may be turned off by this.

However, what makes SES great is the sheer amount of soul and grim emotion from their songs. The simple lyrics that would seem like tripe coming from any other band have a strange power when they are sung in Sean Danielson's rugged, melancholy voice. The insturmentals are made so that they seem to only enhance the soul and mood of the song. When SES is really at their best, it's sometimes as if the vocals and the insturmentals share the same soul, thus enhancing the power of their songs. This kind of genuine feeling coming from a song is something I rarely hear from any other band, and it is what seperates this band from the other countless, forced-feeling radio bands. What is even more incredible about this is that the members have lived fairly happy lives and have gone through few of the problems they sing about, yet they still convey mood quite effectivly.

Song Rundown

Bottom of a Bottle (9/10): The single that made them famous. Not their best work, but it has a certain energy to it, making it decent.

Sillhoettes (10/10): The first taste of the melancholy SES can envoke. It is also the first example of when this band gives power to seemingly simple phrases: in the bridge, when Sean sings "when I have kids/I won't put any chains on their wrists, I won't. I'll tell them this/There's nothing in this world that you can't be if you want it enough", we truly believe what he says and are perhaps inspired to tell our kids this message as well.

Nowhere Kids (10/10): Another sad song about abusive parents. It really makes us feel for any child who has to face this problem.

This is War (10/10): Moody lyrics that perfectly convey how a soldier feels; he has little control over what he does while enlisted. He feels out of place and normally woundn't harm anyone, yet he feels he must do what he needs to do for his country. Great acoustic song.

Therapy (9/10): Decent insturmentals and vocals that make us believe Sean is weighed down with the countless problems of the world. Could still use more emotion, though.

For You (8.5/10): Like Therapy, it could use more emotion. As it stands, though, it is a nice acoustic song with a slighty sympathy-invoking bridge and a certain resigned hopelessness in the chorus.

Your Way (10/10): The melancholy is lifted in exchange for defiance. Sean sings the defiant lyrics in a tone that really sounds as though he is questioning those that claim they can make life better, finally declaring that life should be lived on one's own terms ("Promises of a better life, what's wrong with the one I'm leading/everyone has a different fight, different wound that keeps them bleeding.") Insturmentals are fast-paced and carry their own disobedient tone as well.

The Other Side (10/10): A song that stands out for its bridge, which displays a certain creativity I don't hear often (I won't tell why. Listen for yourself.) Another decent acoustic song with a chorus that makes us believe Sean longs for better times and greener pastures.

Every Sunday (6/10): Lacks emotion. Lyrics don't stay on topic very well, either. So-so insturmentals, though, and not really awful, per se.

With This Knife (9/10): If the lyrics were better, this song would be even more depressing than it is already. A very sad, anguished, and hopeless sounding song that shouldn't be listened to while one is in a good mood.

Radio in a Hole (5/10): Never really cared for this song. Vague lyrics, slightly annoying insturmentals, and no real emotion make this the weakest track on this album (not the worst song in the world, but still.)

All My Problems (10/10): The defiance comes back. This song is just as well done as its predecessor, Your Way.

I Want My Life (10/10): Acoustic songs are really SES's strong point, and this is probably their best one. Again, very hopeless sounding. The insturmentals also sound very tender yet sad on this one. A very touching song.

Eraser (9/10): A decent song about a love-hate relationship (Ha! Finally found the meaning.) What really makes this song work is the bridge: after the chilling lines "And I can see myself in heaven/If I can free myself from this hell", we are sent into a very nice solo. The rest of the song is decent all-around as well. Not a bad closer.

If you believe music can't be good without being complicated (no matter how much emotion is in it), fine. If you don't, however, and want music that will hit you emotionally, look no further.

Highly Recommended

1 out of 5 stars Is this what constitutes "deep" lyrics?.......2006-02-23

Just begin by looking at the titles of the songs on the back and you already know what you're getting into. The lyrics are supposed to be deep but they come off as condescending, self-righteous and self-pitying. He's angry and depressed for the most shallow of reasons and tries to tell us what's wrong with society with the most simple of lyrics. Kurt Cobain was angry and depressed but his lyrics were 20 times more creative. I mean, what ever happened to imagery, symbolism and creativity?
The musicians themselves are average. Take somewhere between 2-6 basic chords, add a crunchy guitar sound and simple rhythmic patterns and you've got a top notch band today. Sad but true.
That said, I understand why people (like my roommate from whom I borrowed the CD) like this band. If you're angry or depressed yourself, you can relate. And the forced vocals and crunchy guitar sounds make good angry music. If that's your thing, go for it. If you like bands like Nickelback or Puddle of Mudd (though they're admittedly better) then you'll like S.E.S. If you want something more artistically creative - musically and lyrically - this is probably not the CD for you.

3 out of 5 stars Not all Bad.......2006-02-09

This is not a band that deserves a 5 star rating. Now before you all start whining and complaining about my rating, listen and here my words. I do not think that they are a bad band, they are not bad at all... I just do not hand out high ratings like they are pieces of candy to a kid. You must earn it.

For instance, where do they get off singing about a war and men and women whom they know nothing about. These men and women chose to defend our country for a reason, they knew what they were getting into when they enlisted in the armed services, but this band would have you believe that they are a bunch of mindless robots who will do anything to please their master.

Its ok to sing about such things if you were somehow involved or knew of such people, did they talk to a Marine, or the president, my opinion is likely not. They simply took a hot issue in the news and ran with it.

I like the guitars, and some of the lyrics, but they need to be backed up.

5 out of 5 stars Blown away!.......2007-04-23

I have to say that I am totally blown away by this CD. Almost every song is awsome, unlike most CDs with one or two good songs. I had never even heard of Smile Empty Soul and just heard them on a free demo CD I got coming out after a Stone Sour concert. I have not heard Anxiety but really want to hear everything I can from them! This CD is a must buy!

3 out of 5 stars A pretty good Smile Empty Soul album BUT..........2006-12-29

WHAT THE F HAPPENED TO ANXIETY!! I Downloaded it illegally (yeah, that's right, illegally dammit, and the whole album at that) and I'm glad I did cause it was never realeased. I've gotta say, Anxiety was a much better attempt than this and frankly I'm dissapointed in the record label for not releasing it. Do whatever you can to obtain Anxiety cause it's way better than this...

5 out of 5 stars Smile empty soul released another smash hit!.......2006-12-09

This is a very amazing cd by one of the best bands ever-Smile Empty soul. I brought it on the fith of December. This one only hs 12 tracks. SES instead of basing it on thier music, they base songs of off lyrics. Thease songs are about issues that an every day teen faces. But be advised, they do some cursing. Most of the cursing is done in "Live Forever". The other 11 songs should be great.

However, only a few songs are on par with one of thier best albulms ever Anxeity. with is a shame since I was expecting a little bit more out of SES. But since Anxeity wasnt released by the record commpanies , this will have to do. This is still a GREAT abulm because its new and the singer Sean Dilisen has something to say!

The best songs on here are: "Heres to Another", "The Hit", "Out to sea", "The Freaks are Comming".

I rate this abulm a 8/10.

5 out of 5 stars Another winner, but not number one for SES fans...........2006-12-06

I should start at the outset and say, I rarely review anything unless I find them extremely bad or extremely good. Needless to say, you've seen my rating and as such, I will tell you straight up front to buy this album. For long-time SES fans (of which there are few, but hopefully more as time goes by), you will realize that this is the weakest of the three records they have released, although there are some definite winning tracks.

Without a doubt, and I think I echo a lot of other comments here -- the best track on this album is "Here's to Another", a deep hitting song about alcoholism.

"I walked into a bar tonight
I knew that it was the last place I should be
I'm like a fly to the neon lights
A good buzz is the only thing I need"

Lyrics like that are what make SES the more lyrically rich band that I've ever heard. Other great songs on this album include Out to Sea, Disease, Loser, and a personal favorite, The Freaks are Coming.

I recommend you buy the album folks -- it's not their best, but still great. The first time listeners to SES can get a glimpse of their lyrical quality from this album, but it's recommended that they pick up the self titled debut album, and search the P2P networks for the tracks from Anxiety, their best album which went unreleased (unfortunately for all of us!).

That's it folks, hope this was informative -- get out there and support the only band that makes lyrics their centerpiece, not their music. The combination of the two makes SES one of the best bands ever to stream through my speakers. Join in the fun!

4 out of 5 stars An overlooked gem.......2006-11-11

Just got this recently and I have to tell you that is one of the best Elton John albums I own. Anybody familiar with his 90's post output may be put off by this one, but anyone who loves his work from the 70's should definitely check this one out. Personally I don't think there is a weak track on here. Highly recommended for someone looking to dig deeper than just the hits.

5 out of 5 stars Empty Sky-- A Singular Record.......2006-08-06

Empty Sky, Elton John's real first record, is truly one of a kind. While there is plenty of '70s Elton, also known as 'The Classic Years,' starting with his self-titled American debut (technically a transitional record, but one that later became very much identified with the '70s), and ending in 1976 with either Here and There or Blue Moves (depending on your perspective); transitional Elton, when he experimented with collaborators other than stalwart Bernie Taupin, beginning with A Single Man and ending with 1982's Jump Up!; true '80s Elton, from '83's Too Low For Zero through Sleeping With the Past in '89; and the current era of his work, following a nearly three-year lull in which Elton got his life in order and acquired his current full head of hair, beginning with The One in '92 and containing a string of successfull stage productions and excellent records (most notably '95's Made In England and '04's Peachtree Road). But Empty Sky stands alone in its category: it is the only '60s Elton John album.
And a product of the '60s it most certainly is. From the evocative, Olde English style of Elton's harpsichord (which dominates this record) to the literate, often Dylanesque, mythological psychedelia of the lyrics, to the experimental production by Steve Brown and the definite aura of Swinging London Hippidom that permeates the record, there can be no doubt as to when and where Empty Sky was made. It comes out of the gate proclaiming the finer ideals of the age, with the somewhat Stonesy title track about a fellow seeking freedom from imprisonment of some kind, as so many were then. 'Val-Hala' follows, a pretty, poetic number about going to Viking heaven with a very traditional, harpsichord-driven English melody. This is followed by the English blues tune 'Western Ford Gateway,' a great song about. . .well, I don't know what it's about, actually, but it makes the only kind of sense that music needs to: the kind that gets stuck in your head for days. The same can be said for most of this record, on which Bernie Taupin is at his most poetically obtuse. The next several tracks, 'Hymn 2000,' 'Lady What's Tomorrow,' 'Sails,' and 'The Scaffold,' continue in this obscure-in-a-meaningful-way fashion, but for the last two with lyrics: the legendary 'Skyline Pigeon,' in its original Harpsichord-based incarnation, is another tale of a gaoled soul seeking freedom, and 'Gulliver' is a probably autobiographical tale of the death of a farm-boy's beloved dog, phrased in Taupin's inimitable style. But for the most part, these are songs that speak the language of soul, of feelings, hunches and instincts rather than that of intellect, ideas and theories. They all tell good stories, linear or not, and they all stay with you when the music's over; this is even true of the instrumental that is the final new song on the original album, a blues jam punningly titled 'Hay Chewed,' and the summation of the whole thing, an odd collage of all the preceding tracks simply called 'Reprise.' The bonus tracks on the CD, while not exactly fitting the tone of the preceding album completely, do serve to show the transition from this style to that of the Elton John album, and they do tell their own tales in the same spiritual language. Much of the '60s best music worked this way, as did many of that decades best chemicals. Now, of course, the Golden Age of Better Living Through Chemistry is passed, but we still have the music, and it still works the same magic: it still takes the listener to a different and better world than the one we spend most of our waking hours in, either then or (most certainly!) now. And as much of a mess as that once great generation has made of the world since their idealistic youth, we need that magic, and the magicians who can still make it, more than ever.

1 out of 5 stars Well...it's a start.......2006-06-10

After a number of years with Bluesology and some moderately successful singles with lyricist Bernie Taupin, Dick James Music decided to give Elton the chance to record his own album.

Because it was 1969, this album is fraught with needless elements of psychadelia and overt experimentation. Moroever, even the remastered version of the album is incapable of covering up the poor production quality of this "master work".

"Empty Sky" plods along for well over 8 minutes until it ends with this silly fade-out and fade-in during which Elton provides some "grooooovy" overdubs. You really have to LOVE the harpsichord to like "Val Hala". Beyond that, the album reads as an instruction manual on how to play the recorder. "Skyline Pigeon" is the great song of this album, and even so, this version if far inferior to the versions on "Rare Masters" or "Here or There". Elton's voice is whiney and nasal; the harpsichord, omnipresent. I will give an honorable mention here to "Western Ford Gateway" which is a really good, catchy tune which struggles to get noticed amidst all the experimental debris surrouding it.

Just when you think Elton is going to put out a good song with the grave and serious "Gulliver", it suddenly jettisons into come fruity jazz number "It's Hay Chewed". Then, the "Reprise" is nothing more than a fragment of each song on the album meshed into a minute...blah! The bonus tracks like "Lady Samantha" and "It's Me That You Need" are mere footnotes in Elton's catalog and provide the listener with little consolation after having endured an otherwise dreadful album.

I would seriously skip this album.

5 out of 5 stars In The Beginning............2006-05-12

If you're an EJ die hard (like me!) U WILL appreciate this true 1st effort from the debut of EJ & BT! We jam with the 8 minute version of the title track/mellow out with Valhala("In your own time"), then "Western Ford Gateway". Next, Hymn 2000(way cool!)
Side 2: Lady what's Tomorrow(early Nigel)/Sails(cool EJ!)Scaffold
(I sang this in Choir MY way for my music teacher & crew!)the
beautiful Skyline Pidgeon & concluded with Gulliver's Gone/Hay Chewed(a rockin' Instro) & the Reprise(way neato, man!)A VERY
energetic debut from 1 of the GREATEST song writing teams in this U.S.S.A! Period!

2 out of 5 stars Fans can never be objective..........2006-05-06

From the OBJECTIVE reviewer...this is Elton's first album and it's rough around the edges. A good producer could have improved this project and there are a couple of decent tracks including the title song.

Album Description

Kaskade legends team up with sultry vocalist Becky Williams to create deep house and dreamy beat heaven with their Late Night Alumni project, which came about when Finn heard Becky sing on a local Salt Lake City Christmas compilation, and impressed by what he heard, tracked her down to provide some vocals on a song he had written. The first single from the album, also entitled Empty Streets, boasts a remix by Kaskade themselves among others. It's textured deep house and distinctive vocals are themes reflected in several other tracks on the album, with standouts including 'Heaven' and 'Nothing Left To Say'. 12 total tracks. Hed Kandi. 2005.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Voice, Brilliant Beats.......2006-11-16

"Empty Streets" and "Beautiful" popped up in a few mixes and compilations, and are immediate standout songs. Becky's voice is like a loving massage, breathy, full of underlying emotion, and technically superb. The production quality is excellent, the electronic elements are masterfully executed, at least as well done as other Kaskade favorites. Excellent "the whole package" album.

With Ministry of Sound bringing Hed Kandi into their fold, I expect the next release to get the right distribution. I listen to a lot of electronica, and when these guys get the audience they deserve, they can make it to the top of the genre.

I bought this cd well-knowing what to expect after hearing the group's tracks on Hed Kandi compilation releases. Tracks like "Seemingly Sleepy," "Empty Streets," "All For Nothing," and "Nothing Left To Say" were all personal favorites.

Being a down-tempo fan, I was surprised to find that such tracks like "Rainy Days," "Eros" and "Sunrise Comes Too Soon" were also very good. Think soft, whispery-vocals that slightly resemble Björk, except with a soft & smooth jazzy style that mixes Kaskade's best house music and Naked Music down-tempo (e.g. Aya, Carte Blanche).

Kaskade, being one of the members of this solid group, dosen't fail to disappoint. If you are a fan of Hed Kandi, Kaskade or Miguel Migs, you'll be very pleased with this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable album.......2005-10-26

I've always enjoyed Late Night Alumni. My introduction to them was through the inclusion of their songs on Hed Kandi compilations. I rushed out to find this cd as soon as it was released. I am not disapointed in the least. It's a nice relaxing album to listen to anytime, morning or night. It's very chillout with a hint of electronica thrown in. Highlights include the title track, "Seemingly Sleepy", "Beautiful", "Meant To Be", "Nothing Left to Say" and the latin influenced "The Rest of You". Check it out!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars You'll be disappointed.......2006-09-02

Not the original artists. Very weak versions of beloved songs by marginal to downright bad vocalists.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good musical mix.......2006-03-10

Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.
