Step Up To The Microphone

Good news for 'Boys fans. Two years after Take Me to Your Leader comes Step Up to the Microphone. Indeed a step up, the contemporary Christian group's seventh updates and augments their sound with splashes of Britpop (albeit after the wave has crested) and a more current, modern rock feel. There are fewer bouncy dance-pop tunes here, but rhythm has by no means been forsaken for accent. What they have gained is a passion for the irresistible hook. Listen to opening track "WooHoo," with its grungy intro giving way to a tight groove and an infectious chorus. Or the soaring melodies of "Entertaining Angels" and "Hallelujah." If you weren't a fan before, do yourself a favor: step up and listen to the News. --Jerry Chamberlain

Good music for anyone to listen to at any age. Will put a smile on your face.

2 out of 5 stars A disquieting effort indeed.......2006-09-07

I was rather disappointed with the group here. I don't know if it was the fact they produced this album themselves, or if they tried to sound too techno here, but this just didn't have the appeal as "Take Me To Your Leader" did. I honestly thought the Newsboys had found thier niche when Steve Taylor began producing the band, but here they really didn't do good. "WooHoo" what's this all about? Is it a reaction to what was happening in churches all around the world with the revival movements? Then there's the second song that was forgettable. I didn't play "Entertaining Angels" because I didn't have to it's rather good. However, the majority of this is alot of techno junk that just didn't make the grade. I know with "WooHoo" the intro is absolutely terrible. I found no joy, no peace, or anything that would make me shout "This is of God". I know some people will think that God will strike me with a bolt of lightning for saying this, but guess what? I can't fake this it's terrible, and I can only stick with "Take Me To Your Leader". After this, and all the other Newsboys albums I just can't seem to enjoy them anymore. I guess another thing with this is that this was the last album released on Star Song record label. Another death besides this album.

5 out of 5 stars EASILY THE BEST!.......2004-06-06

WOW! This album is PURE GOLD! It's SOOOOO fun, and also kind of comforting to me. I don't really like to pick "favorites" when it comes to the Newsboys, but if I had to pick a favorite album they've done, this would probably be it. If I had to pick favorite songs on it, they would be Woohoo, Entertaining Angels, Believe, Truth Be Known-Everybody Gets A Shot (WAY awesomer when live!), Deep End, and especially Hallelujah; It's probably my favorite song of all time. If you read the lyrics, then you'll know what I'm like, hopeful when all seems hopeless. Anyway, EVERY SINGLE Newsboys freak must have this album. When I say freak, I mean CRAZY ABOUT THE NEWSBOYS. Go out and get it!! ROCK ON, NEWSBOYS!! PLEEEASE come to Virginia again!!

5 out of 5 stars Step up to this!.......2003-02-02

This CD is pure Newsboys style. Any Newsboys fan could tell you, if you turned on your radio to any good christian station, and you heard one of the songs off this CD, even if you had never heard it before, you would know it was the Newsboys. They have a totally unique style, I've never heard it in any other band. Their music isn't rock AND pop, its both,so mixed together that it really become's its own genre. All that to say that this CD probably is their best one yet. Only for true Newsboys fans. In this CD they stay 100% true to their "it could only be the Newsboys" style. Don't be a wimp and shy away from buying this CD without listning to it first. Who knows? Someone like moi, could take the last one.:)
