ZOEgirl

Editorial Reviews

Very likely the most amped-up female vocal group in the Christian arena, ZOEgirl cuts loose urban grooves that fit right into the core of today's favorite pop sounds. This trio is introducing itself to the world with this self-titled debut record--and more than 100 concert dates with Clay Crosse, Nichole Nordeman, and Carmen. The word zoe, which means "life," is a symbol of ZOEgirl's vision to portray the passion and beauty of a life that is in harmony with Christ. And with youth as a target audience, they have put their passion into songs about issues that affect the lives of teens. The centerpiece of this project is the pristine vocal energy, which strikes a perfect balance between playfulness and warmth. As well, ZOEgirl's gifted crafting of catchy, anthemic melodies adds an element of euphoria to the message that they carry. --Israel Button

ZOEgirl is the latest incarnation of the girl/boy band phenomena, joining a proliferation of teen-to-20s artists in Christian music. The trio of Chrissy Conway, Kristin Swinford and Alisa Girard (dad Chuck was an early Jesus music pioneer) has voices that naturally blend together. The harmony works well in the opening tune, "I Believe," a hook laden, up-tempo, I'm-not-ashamed-of the-gospel, feel-good track. One other notable highlight of the record is the thoughtful ballad, "Give Me One Reason,"... read more

5 out of 5 stars Life.......2006-12-24

Life is the best ZOEgirl CD. I like it the most because it has alot of different stuff going on in the songs.

1. With All Of My Heart- 7/10- Like the lyrics, but i skip it alot because it's boring.

2. Even If- 10/10- One of my favorites. Love the chorus. The best.

3. Dismissed- 10/10- Even though they did rap, I love it! It's a good style for them.

4. Waiting- 10/10- Another one of my favorite. It's a really pretty song, especially the chorus.

5. R U Sure About That?- 7/10- Not one of the best, but OK. I don't really like the chorus and the beginning.

6. Ordinary Day- 10/10- I like the beginning when you hear them talking. Then it jumps to the actual song.

7. Plain- 8/10- Pretty song, but...

8. Nick of Time- 6/10- Could have been better. Sounds too weird for me.

9. Forever 17- 8,10- Slow, but love the chorus. It picks up too

10. Here and Now- 10/10- Another great one. Good message and love it.

11. The Truth- 2/10- Way too slow! i NEVER listen to it.

I really would buy this CD!

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable CD .......2006-02-25

I am not a huge fan of Contemporary Christian Music. Or pop music. However, I found this CD to be very much different from a lot of the CCM garbadge floating around.
For one thing, the quality of the CD, music-wise, vocally, and lyric-wise, was very amazing.

1. With All OF My Heart: The lyrics to this song are very strong, as well as upbeat. A very well-written worship song with a beautiful melody. You will definatly love this song.

2. Even If: Once again, very upbeat and positive. This song has a very good message. The vocals are amazing as well.

3. Dismissed: Not a huge fan of this song, because it sounds as if they are trying to rap in it. Rapping isn't there thing.

4. Waiting: A beautiful song, about the love of God that patiently waits for us to receive him.

5. R U Sure About That?: I sure wasn't sure about this song- I think that it is over the top in the sense that they try too hard to be like Britney Spears or Jojo.

6. Ordinary Day: This song is okay. It has some cool acoustic guitar parts in the song, and the girls have beautiful voices.

7. Plain: A soft, mellow song. Plain has a great message about loving yourself.

8. Nick Of Time: I give this song 5 stars. It has some great vocals on it and sounds pretty funky. It'll get you dancing.

9. Forever 17: For those who don't know, Forever 17 is about a 17 year old who is killed by a drunk driver. It's a very sad song, and you will probably cry. Once again, there vocal talents are amazing.

10. Here And Now: A great worship song that starts out with the sound of a storm.

11. The Truth: No doubt that Alisa Girard can sing, but I found this song to be whiny and just plain silly. It's a very slow song, and it sounds as if she is the only one singing the song. This is a group, right?

In conclusion: I was plesantly surprised with this album, although pop is not my genre. So, go buy the album. :)

5 out of 5 stars Even Better Than JUMP 5 [no offense]!!.......2005-10-14

I just got this CD and I luvved it fromthe first time I heard DISMISSED and EVEN IF at a kids talent show. But I'll get to the point. Buy this CD and I'm serious that this group is even better than JUMP 5 and Barlowgirl [even though these girls rock to..]. My favorites are DISSMISSED [other reviewers agree], EVEN IF, PLAIN, and last but not least WITH ALL OF MY HEART. I know this page is for ZOEgirl only but if you like his disk try out JUMP 5's OLD album called ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD.

This is a great Christian CD. My fav. songs are I Believe, Dismissed, and Dead Serious. Some of the songs are kinda slow, I like some slow songs in a pop album, but the only up-beat ones are my favorites, the ones I listed above. Still worth getting though.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Collection.......2007-03-26

I will admit: I like other groups (e.g. Everlife) better. But these girls have great harmonies.

I liked "I Believe", "You Get Me", "Unchangeable", "Beautiful Name", "Scream" and "Even If".

4 out of 5 stars it's sad...........2006-12-03

It's too bad thatZOEgirl is breaking up and quitting. They were really good. I think that Alisa and Kristen will be good though...
The CD is good, but i had all the albums so it was kinda a rip off. I guess that was my fault for buying it though.. I loved the song One Day, so i got it. The songs are great! Amazon said that PLAIN was PAIN. It's just PLAIN people. U should get it! I wouldn't recomend getting it if you already have all their albums though. If you like One Day and Unchangable, you could download them from iTunes.

5 out of 5 stars amazing!.......2006-11-13

5 out of 5 stars OMG! ZOEgirl has another great album!.......2006-11-13

I have all the ZOEgirl albums, but this one would have to be my fave. It's so upbeat and the lyerics are really good! I'm a Christian girl and I love hearing great songs about God that also have great pop beats. This is a winner of a CD!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2006-08-30

Oh my goodness, zoegirl just keeps getting better and better with every new album they make! This is their 5th album if you count their remix album. It's also about time I wrote a review about this because I got this CD last April (I know, long time ago)! Anyway, it's a very great CD, very uplifting music, and I think we can all learn from it, too. It's very great christain music that a lot of christains would love.

1. Reason to live - 9/10 A really good beginning! Zoegirl always knows how to beging their album, and this song is very encouraging.

2. Dead serious - 10/10 Wow, this is a very pop, dancy song! Chrissy's voice in the chorus is amazing, I like her the best. This song is also really cool to sing along to, and it's very energetic.

3. About you - 10/10 A very great single! They need to make a video of this song sometimes, it would be interesting to see what it's like, and the lyrics are so true

4. Scream - 10/10 Oh, this song is so beautiful! It's so encouraging and uplifting, it's a very sweet song written by Alisa. And you definitely don't have to scream for God to hear your prayers!

5. Forevermore - 10/10 This song is also mainly sang by Alisa, at least in the chorus, which is by far the best part of this song! It talks about how our Lord Jesus Christ is forevermore Holy, and that He reigns all the earth.

6. The way You love me - 9/10 This song is also very sweet, but I gave it 9 out of 10 because it's a little too slow of a song for my taste. But I still like it a lot, because the lyrics are important to know.

7. Let it out - 10/10 Ok, this song is EXACTLY the opposite of the previous one! It is very upbeat and energetic, and also a very short song he he.

8. Good girl - 10/10 This one is great too! I didn't like it TOO much when I first heard it, but now I think it's really cool, especially with Chrissy singing the chorus so well!

9. Not the one - 10/10 Cool! Chrissy sings the whole song, and it sounds great! She and Alisa wrote it, and it talks about how they changed themselves completely, and that they became christains and finally stopped taking advice from wicked people and all.

10. Skin deep - 10/10 My favorite song on the whole CD! This is a very sweet and true song that Kristen wrote, and she has a very pretty voice when singing this (the whole song is sang by her), and the tune is so beautiful. We are definitely soooooo much more than skin deep!

11. Safe - 10/10 A perfect ending to this album. It really is because it talks about us christains spending eternity with God in Heaven, and that if you believe in Christ as your Saviour, you're safe, and that's what the world will be like in the end, which is why this is such a perfect ending to the album!

Anyway, there you have it! Those reasons listed above are the reasons why I love this album. I REALLY hope the make another album, but I'm not sure they will, and if they don't, I'll miss them and their music sooooooo much! It's always so nice to pop in one of their CD's (I own them all) and listen to their voices, hearing them sing their praises to the Lord! So, if you like Christain music, I urge you to buy this CD, it's great! And if there are any non-christains reading my interview who don't know the Lord, please buy this CD and see if you like it. And if you do, I hope it will change your heart and that you will get to know Christ someday. Trust me, it's definitely worth it!

4 out of 5 stars room to breathe.......2006-07-07

my friend wanted me to listen to this band and it was pretty good didnt listin to all of them but the best one was dead sirius. i will have to listen to the rest. this might be a good band but superchick will probably always be a better band then them.

3 out of 5 stars Room to Breathe - Tiresom.......2006-05-21

Have you ever gotten a CD, and it is great for a while, but after you hear it over and over, it get's boring? That's how this CD was.

Overall, it was a great CD, the songs show young girls to live for God but with a great, contemerary beat. It's just not good to have JUST this CD, because it will eventually grow tiresome.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME CD, VERY UPLIFTING!!.......2006-03-21

I absolutely love this CD and can't listen to it enough. I always have it playing in the car and I hope to buy several more CDs by this group. They are awesome! I feel so uplifted after listening to their good, clean music!

5 out of 5 stars Top rate pop rock.......2006-07-06

I've been familiar with Zoegirl since their debut album, although I didn't get my first Zoegirl album until their remix album, Mix Of Life (which I've reviewed here at Amazon). While I'd considered them a pop dance group--which is why I bought the remix album, because I wanted some good dance remixes--on the Mix Of Life album was one rock remix, the song "I Believe." Though I am more hungry for good Christian dance music--even pop dance--I was impressed with the sound of that song.

It seems that song pointed the direction to this subsequent album, where the pop dance sound is replaced by a pop rock sound. While I figured I would like the album, I was not expecting to like this as much as I did. In fact, it ended up being one of my top three albums of 2005.

The opening and closing tracks on the album have a bit of a darker sound than their typical tunes do, something that I think helped make this album appeal to me. But my favorite two songs on the album are elated power pop tunes with a very bright sound: "You Get Me" and "Feel Alright." A central line in "Feel Alright" for me is "the sun is shining," and this is a song a play on a beautiful sunny day, particularly in spring, because of its jubilant energy.

As for "You Get Me," it's not only the powerful sunny energy I like in the tune, I like the words especially, of the fact that I am created by God, and therefore he "gets" me, unlike others who may not understand me. This realization of God's intimate knowledge of me, with his care and love, ultimately brings about worship: "I hear You call me by name, and I reach for You; there is nothing I'd rather do than just worship You."

I also used "Inside Out" a lot in my personal worship. Though I didn't use the song for its intended message, I used lines from it that fit my life: "Lately it's so amazing what You're doing to me, rearranging me from the inside out." It's awesome to see God working in your life and changing you in ways you can't do by yourself.

The only song I don't care for on the album is "Contagious," but it's nothing that a good remix can't fix. As it is on this album, the wa-wa sound gives it too much of a dated 70s sound.

The album ends with a song whose chorus is: "Earth and sky and wind and sea will never match Your majesty." The end of this song is spine-tingling, with a low, dark-sounding single piano note with ethereal vocals hovering over it. Awesome. If they would do more of this, along with sounds in the vein of the opening song "Beautiful Name," as well as the title track, they could make a hauntingly beautiful album.

While there are just tastes of that element on this album, they have still taken their music in a new direction from previous albums. This is cheery, energetic pop rock that is top quality. Some of the lyrics are aimed at a young audience, but there is enough material here that's suitable for all ages that the youth-targeted lyrics shouldn't get in the way too much.

I try to limit the number of albums to which I award 5 stars to just a few per year, so this rating shows I consider this album to be extraordinary.

4 out of 5 stars Energetic Christian Pop.......2006-01-02

Zoegirl has come out with another album with some very good songs. Their sound has changed a bit from their first album. It has less of a dance sound to it. I think the music has more substance to it. The lyrics continue to be positive and have a Christian message throughout.

There are several very good songs. Two of my favorites are 'Beautiful Name' and 'You Get Me'.

This is a pleasant album overall. I recommend it for anyone wanting a gift for teenage girls. They love the sound and the lyrics are very good. This is an enjoyable album even for those of us who have teenage children.

5 out of 5 stars Their Best Yet!.......2005-04-03

This is ZOEgirl's best CD yet. Here is why:
**beautiful name**
An ok song, but not one of the best. It really sets the stage for the rest of the songs on the CD. Worth listning to.
**you get me**
One of the best on this CD, you get me has a strong beat and great lyrics and vocals. One of the best.
**inside out**
Another song with a strong beat, this is a good song, with really cool sounds.
**love for me**
This is one of my favorite songs on the CD. Good vocals and lyrics sith a strong beat. One of the slower songs.
**unbroken**
An ok song, but a slow song. Good lyrics, but not the best vocals.
**wait**
Another one of my favorite songs, very fast, and with a cool sound that you can really notise when you are listning with headphones.
**feel alright**
A fun song, kind of a 'wake up and enjoy life' kind of song. Very catchy, it will be with you hours later.
**she**
Not one of the best songs, and you can't hear much unless you have the volume turned way up. Worth listning to once and a while.
**contagious**
If feel alright didn't get stuck in your head, this one will. A very fun, fast song, one of my favorites.
**different kind of free**
Lots of good sounds, with a rap sonund. A good title song, if you don't mind the rap part toward the end.
**life to me**
A slow song, with some interesting instrumental parts. Good vocals too.

Overall, a great CD! If you like the other ZOEgirl titles, you will love this one. There is something for everyone in it.

3 out of 5 stars it's too bad.......2005-03-02

To me, this was not one of their better albums. I loved the first CD, but this one was a total let down. there will be a new CD soon, i think it may be already out. I can only hope that they don't dig their hole any deeper, in my opinion, they have room for improvement.

5 out of 5 stars Not bad at all! Great message!.......2004-12-17

This is a great album mixed with pop and christian beats and vocals. I would recommend this cd to anyone who is looking for music a bit poppier than Rebecca St. James, yet softer than Jump5's.
1)Beautiful name- Great song. This is about not being afraid to stand up for what you believe in. In this case their love for Jesus Christ. I rate it 4/5
2) You Get Me- The truth about this song is the only person who understands you is God. He and Only He should be the love of your life forever! It is amazing and the vocals really get you in the mood to just sit down and pray for God's uncondtional love. Definite 5/5
3) Inside Out- Such an amazing song with great and upbeat vocals. My favorite song on their album. This songs message is even if you are insecure about how you look or feel and always wonder about what other people think about you, there is no doubt God only cares about what you have inside and how much love you have to give others. 5/5
4) Love Me for Me- This song is about even though people can be foolish at times and a bit crazy, God will always love you for who you are and who you will always be. My fave vocals are "Spotlight glaring down silence from the crowd, the circus is just beginning I tremble looking around and I would hate to fall and hit the ground". Such a great song. 5/5
5) Unbroken- Slow ballad about broken hearts and sad moments. Very emotional. 4/5
6)Wait- Wait is about all the pain you get from people who you do not like or get along with, or just being betrayed. It is also about how someone will realease ones pain. This is very emotional and touched my heart from the chorus. 5/5!
7) Feel Alright- Sort of pop, not much Christian vocals. There is still a good message and that is to just live life happy and always make sure 'the sun is shining' and will brighten your days till the end.
8) She- What can I say? I thought the song was about abortion but it isnt. The message is quite similar to teenage girls. It is about waiting to have sex. If you do not wait and just do it because you think you love someone or something to do, you are wrong. The girl in the song did and made a mistake. She is young and got pregnant by a guy who did not care about her. All he wanted was to just get her in bed. It is hard to rate this song because the message is so universal that it is kind of hard to rate this song, but I like it the most on the album!!
9) Contagious- This song is about catching God's contagious love and never letting go or trying to get rid of it. 4/5
10) Different Kind of Free- Their single, which is also quite universal. I love it and the message. You can get material things or love from someone you see everyday, like family, but it is never the same like God's love. He can see through you and wants to help you and give you his "Free" love/ 5/5!! BEST EVER
11) Life to Me- I do not really listen to it?
******************************************************
SECRET SITE!- If you have internet you can access many bonus and secret features you will NOT find anywhere else. There are two exclusive songs. One called, "Are You Sure About That?" I really like the vibes and lyrics. It is quite poppy but the lyrics show gospel sides, too. The other secret song is called "I'll Try". It is really nice and a great message about trying to understand things in life and God's ways. Other features are lyrics to a few songs that are the real ones... handwritten!! Lastly, there are pics never before seen and really great videos! Please check this cd out and go buy it!!!

4 out of 5 stars ZOEgirl's first cd.......2006-02-25

What can I say? I love this CD for many reasons. One being their beautiful voices. I am not a CCM or pop music fan. However, there was something different about this cd. HERE WE GO!

1. I Believe: A very enjoyable, upbeat song with a great message.

2. Anything Is Possible: This song made me cry because I have felt like the person described in the song. Vocal talent at 100%.

3. Suddenly: A sweet, upbeat song about the love of God. This song made me cry as well.

4. Give Me One Reason: This song isn't my favorite, mainly because of the message which deceipts a girl wanting to leave her boyfriend simply because he does not believe the same way she does.

5. Living For You: An awesome worship song about...well, living for God.

6. No You: Another tear-jerking song. It has a beautiful message and will make you love God even more. I loved it.

7. Little Did I Know: What an awesome song! I adore the chorus.

8. Stop Right There: Not a huge fan of this song. It's basically the sister song of "Dismissed" to me. Plus, I have no clue what they are talking about.

9. Upside Down: Another song that hit my not-favorite list. When I first heard it, I thought it was an add for six flags. It's kind of cute, so I give it 3 stars.

10. Live Life: Oh yeah! This song really shows off not only their vocal talents, but their lyric-writing talents as well.

11. Constantly: A sweet song, but I just don't like it when they do slow songs.

IN CONCLUSION...This album is awesome for their first release. So I say to you...go buy it!

4 out of 5 stars Positive, Upbeat Music With Great Lyrics.......2006-01-02

This debut by Zoegirl is a pleasant collection of Christian pop.

The sound is a little lighter than I normally prefer, but they have a knack for making a lighter pop sound very pleasing. In addition to that, their lyrics are very thoughtful, Christian, and solid.

My teenage daughter really enjoys Zoegirl, and I must say that I like them pretty well myself. If you are looking for something to get for a teenager, this would be a particularly good pick.

4 out of 5 stars ZOEgirl's debut.......2004-07-16

Let me just give my opinions on the songs for quicker information...

"I BELIEVE" (5/5): This song turned out to be very popular. It had a very recognizable sound of snappy, sweet pop. The music video was very clever.
"ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE" (5/5): This song also turned out to be popular. It had very well arranged vocals. The lyrics were well written.
"SUDDENLY" (4/5): The parts of this song that have stood out to me the most are the lyrics. They were very well written, and have a good message. The programming and vocals in this song are very cool.
"GIVE ME ONE REASON" (3/5): This is more of a gentile ballad. Still snappy, yet almost a little "cute" sounding. Not one of my favorites.
"LIVING FOR YOU" (2/5): The lyrics are good, but the tune of the song is not that impressive to me. Still, I think the remix is even worse.
"NO YOU" (5/5): This is a little slower than most of the other songs, but I actually like it. It has great lyrics. It's always been a bit of a comfort song to me. The vocals are very nice.
"LITTLE DID I KNOW" (5/5): This song is a little different, but I like it a lot. The programming is great. Good lyrics, and vocals.
"STOP RIGHT THERE" (4/5): This isn't the worst song, just not a favorite. There's nothing wrong at all with the message. The song overall has a bit of a ShineMK influence, I can tell.
"UPSIDEDOWN" (3/5): Oi. I'm not to sure what to think of this song. It's the kind where you either love it or hate it.
"LIVE LIFE" (5/5): Ok, this is an awesome song! I used to think it was annoying, but I like it now. I'm not sure what it is that makes me love it. The lyrics are the best part.
"CONSTANTLY" (?/?): For me, this song has always been very forgettable. I never remember how it goes. The lyrics are pretty good. Still, it's more of a gentile ballad.

Anyway, if you like Plus One, Jump5, or Jaci Velasquez, you'll probably like ZOEgirl. Please rate how helpful or unhelpful this review is.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Girl.......2004-04-28

I don't have this cd. But I do have Life and Differend Kind of Free, and I love them. I would definetly give them five stars. I have based my judgement on my cds, but not entirely. I've heard some of their songs from this cd and I really like them. So I'm positive that this one is going to be amazing too!!

4 out of 5 stars Will please ZOEgirl fans, like me........2003-10-08

In between studio releases Life and Different Kind Of Free, ZOEgirl released an album in which the 4 singles from their debut and most of the tracks from Life (In fact, all but Forever 17, The Truth, and R U Sure About That) recieved fresh new remixes.

        1. Dismissed [Omega 8 Mix featuring Shon Lock] - This is probably the first ever rap/pop collaboration in Christian music, a trend that has plagued, in many cases, pop music for years. But it's fine for this album, as it fits the style of the remix. A harder hip-hop beat has been given to the already edgy song. 10/10

        2. Even If [Prefab Mix] - The stuff of club remix maxi-singles, but better. The song already was quite dance-y, but this gives it a pure electronica/techno beat and feel, yet it doesn't sound like every other dance remix out there. 10/10

        3. I Believe [Trip Rock Mix] - Talk about a 180! The techno dance pop song becomes a rockin' tune with guitars and the works. A sign of things to come maybe? (Different Kind Of Free is very rock influenced.) 10/10

        4. Waiting [Nova Mix] - The beat isn't dancey, but it's definitely faster than the album version, but still retains the soothing qualities of the original. 10/10

        5. With All Of My Heart [Beatmart Mix featuring Soul Purpose] - I don't get why this site or my Windows Media Player call it the Beautiful Mix when the package clearly states Beatmart. But they also messed up on the DKOF and Life tracklistings. This remix is awful. It's like nothing more than a beat and some sound effects, with no real music to back the effects and beat up. 2/10

        6. Save Myself [You Like That? Mix Featuring MC Ripper] - I can't really compare it to the original, as I haven't heard it, but I do believe that this is the original, as I've heard a clip of the original, and it sounds exactly like this remix. Maybe the rapper is the only difference between the two. Still an awesome track. 10/10

        7. Ordinary Day [Blue Mix] - This dance song also works well a nice slower track. Well done. 9/10

        8. Plain [Beautiful Chill Mix] - Nice remix. The acoustic guitar gives this remix a nice touch. 10/10

        9. Nick Of Time [H2O Mix] - Remixing does not make this track any better. The beat only shows up occasionally during the verses and the choruses, and there's not much else going on at any other time. Even worse than the original. 4/10

        10. No You [H2O Mix] - Here comes the block of 3 remixed tracks from the debut. The ballad is given a nice hip-hop ballad feel. But the original is better. 8/10

        11. Anything Is Possible [Madame LaPulse Mix] - The song, which was kind of R&B influenced, while still having the driving beat of a techno song, is transformed into a full on electronica/techno song. I love it! Muahahaha! ::Mad scientist:: 10/10

        12. Living For You [The Ghost Mix featuring Grits] - This could not be any more different from the original, or anything on the debut. The mid-tempo pop song is transformed into a mid-tempo hip-hop track. The 4th and final song to feature a guest rapper. 10/10

        11. Here And Now [Turbo Radio Mix] - The song is great, and this version is not bad, but I'm only giving this 2/10, because it doesn't really change the song that much. A different intro, shorter ending, and the song is speeded up, but it still pretty much sounds the same as the original. The idea of a remix is to make the song sound completely different. Maybe not a different style of music, but to not sound like the original with a few changes.

Overall, this is a GREAT remix album. Also check out Blur by Rachael Lampa, which is also a fantastic remix album.

        5 out of 5 stars Today's Music.......2003-10-01

This CD is simply the best of the best in Christian Pop music I have ever heard. It truly stands tall right next to todays mix of techno and pop rock. I am a very picky music listener, and I would definetley give this one an A+. I would actually like to know if they have anything else out like this album.
