In a Different Light
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
With "Testify to Love," the longest running No. 1 Christian single of the 1990s and 1999's Dove Award-winner for Pop Song of the Year, A Maze of Grace hardly falls to the wayside with the release of In a Different Light. Yet even with Nikki Hassman's departure and the subsequent addition of Cherie Paliotta, Avalon has another monster hit. In a Different Light raises the bar on harmonics, resulting in a dense, rich sound that retains its slick pop veneer. The quartet has found a vocal balance that showcases individual differences without compromising the quality and consistency of the whole. "Let Your Love" gets funky and electronic with a pulsating dance beat beneath the upbeat anthemic melody; "Can't Live a Day" is a diva-style ballad; "I'm Speechless" is an octane-powered pop tune; and the title cut is an unadulterated smash featuring Avalon's signature tight group harmony on the refrain. --Paige La Grone

Album Description
Featuring a futuristic cover predating David Bowie's science fiction funk, Betty Davis crafted an inspired second album, leading with "Shoo-B Doop and Cop Him" (later sampled by Ice Cube) and made up of classic cuts like "Don't Call Her No Tramp" and the mesmerizing punk soul of "He Was A Big Freak." This was the first album Betty produced entirely by herself and she really sharpened up her songs and performances for it.
This 1974 masterpiece will finally receive a long-overdue proper reissue with Part Two of Oliver Wang's liner notes and an endless array of photos and archival material, plus a number of previously unreleased bonus tracks.
Album Description
For the first time, Betty's critically adored first two albums are being lovingly re-mastered from the original master tapes by Light In The Attic Records to sound as ferocious and revolutionary as they did when they first sprung on an unsuspecting world in the early `70s. In recent years, rappers from Ice Cube to Talib Kweli to Ludacris have rhymed over the intensely strong but sensual funk of Betty Davis. One can hardly imagine the genre-busting, culture-crossing musical magic of Outkast, Prince, Erykah Badu, Rick James, The Roots, or even the early Red Hot Chili Peppers without the influence of this R&B pioneer. Ms. Davis's unique story is unlike any other in popular music. Betty wrote the song 'Uptown' for the Chambers Brothers before marrying Miles Davis in the late `60s, influencing him with psychedelic rock, and introducing him to Jimi Hendrix -- personally inspiring the classic jazz-rock fusion album Bitches Brew. Betty not only wrote every song she ever recorded and produced every album after her first, but the young woman penned the tunes that got The Commodores signed to Motown. The Detroit label soon came calling, pitching a Motown songwriting deal, which Betty turned down. Motown wanted to own everything. In 1973, Davis would finally kick off her cosmic career with an amazingly progressive hard funk and sweet soul self-titled debut. Her 1974 sophomore album They Say I'm Different features a worthy-of-framing futuristic cover challenging David Bowie's science fiction funk with real rocking soul-fire, kicked off with the savagely sexual 'Shoo-B-Doop and Cop Him' (later sampled by Ice Cube). In addition to the restoration of the incredible original cover art, the albums feature compelling and heartbreaking liner notes written by author and respected soul music scholar Oliver Wang (O-Dub/Soul Sides) and include her second interview in decades, making these essential reissues for any soul or funk-rock collection.

Betty Davis?WHOA!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-07-03
Betty Davis is an artist I've been hearing a lot of hype about for years.'They Say I'm Different' is an album I've been hearing about forever as well.I was almost entirely certain there was no way that this album could possibly live up to the hype.Well when Light In The Attic records decided to put this out on CD,.....well to put it mildly this MORE then lived up to it's longheld mystique and hype. The best way to describe this music is unhinged and unpolished funk.EVERY song on it fits that description. As for Betty Davis's singing,it lays somewhere between the the styles of Tina Turner,Sly Stone and Janis Joplin. All of the songs celebrate her liberated spirit but there's one that just blows you away in less then a second."He Was A Big Freak".......I don't know WHAT MAN she was referring to but she really paints herself as a wild, wild funky diva BIG TIME here;she wails out about her "man" who enjoys being tied up.The Ohio Players did a lot of S&M based album art at the this time but TALKING OPENLY ABOUT IT,A FEMALE FUNK SINGER?And it never seems like a gimmick either because you actually believe she lived a lot of the "wild style" she speaks about. And the grooves on that and every other song here are as raw a funk as you're probably ever going to hear.

Great CD.......2007-02-23
Avalon is definitely my favorite group ever!! This CD features my favorite members (Jody, Janna, Michael, and Cherie). I like the other members, too, but they're my favorite.
"Take You At Your Word" is really a cool song. I loved it the minute I heard it on their "Testify To Love: The Very Best of Avalon" CD. "In Not Of" is in the top three for this album. "In A Different Light" is a catchy tune that I think everyone will enjoy. "Can't Live A Day" shows off Janna's AMAZING vocal talent. The words are awesome--everything about this one is great. "Always Have, Always Will" is one of those songs that you get hooked on and are singing all day--something that Avalon tends to do to me on every release. "I'm Speechless" puts Cherie in the spotlight and is a big highlight for this album. "If My People Pray" and "Only For The Weak" are catchy but can be forgotten in the mix of all the other great songs. "Let Your Love" is FABULOUS! Love it, love it, love it! "Hide My Soul" shows YET AGAIN how good Mr. Jody McBrayer really is! He is just phenomenal. (I like to think how far he'd go on American Idol!) "First Love" closes things out with all four of the members each having a solo. Really great lyrics--fantastic song.
Overall, this CD is DEFINITELY awesome and I would DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS TO EVERYONE!

great CD! The very first Avalon song i liked, "Can't Live A Day", is on this CD....my faves are "Take You At Your Word", "In Not Of", "Can't Live a Day", and "Let Your Love."
Loved it!.......2005-03-09
This is my third Avalon CD and I still love them!
My faves are Take You At Your Word and Can't Live a Day. It's true that without Christ, we wouldn't be here and I wouldn't want to ever have to live without Him in control of my life.
Loved the CD and I rank it in my favorites.
SOLD ON AVALON!.......2005-01-15
This CD sold me on Avalon. I had heard them on the raido and saw them live and thought they werent impressive. I heard this CD (after much prodding) and I really really like them. IADL is my favorite Avalon CD, hands down. I like their newer stuff too, but not as much. i really like them. but now Jody(dark haired guy) and Janna(girl with straighter hair) are the two that are still in the group. Cherrie and Michael both quit and there are new people, Michelle (i think) and Greg. they are pretty good, but i think Jody Janna Cherrie and Michael made the best Avalon.

Album Description
This is the debut album from a high-energy dance act from Sweden that combines pounding trance beats with soaring synth melodies and dreamy vocals. Most of the singing comes from a beautiful young woman named Zandra, but other guests pop up, including Casey "3PM" from the band Wideband Network, and there are some intense instrumentals thrown into the fray as well. The music of Nevarakka fits into the new breed of melodic dance music, where synthpop melodies combine with modern trance for a beautiful and infectious sound. Fans of acts like Delerium, Schiller, Blank & Jones, ATB, etc. will find similarities, as well as new surprises.

I was pleasantly surprised by this CD. I took a chance on this CD and loved it all the way through. I would rate it in my top ten over the last 12 months.
A High Energy Dance Album including vocals of Casey.......2005-06-09
This is a very high-energy album that includes the vocals of Casey from The Wideband Network, and the vocals of Zandra. From my own opinion, I think that my favorite three songs are "Secrets", "I am trying", and "Why". I would recommend this album to anyone looking for a a high-energy dance album. And also, it is my favorite synthpop album. I would say that Nevarakka is a rising star!

Nashville Sound?.......2005-05-29
I am not really able to rate this album but I thought I would write this to see if Doug Stone gets any radio play from this album. I will guess NO! When singers like Allan Jackson and Travis Tritt and George Strait start getting pushed aside I will stop listening to new country till it becomes an industry of innovation and freedom for artist. I don't listen to new country much anymore so if anybody is aware of Dougs new album getting radio play leave a post please? That might make me feel their is hope for country yet.

Prime Cuts: How Do You Get Off the Moon, Let the Light Shine on You, Millionaire
All through the 90s, neo-traditionalist Doug Stone has garnered for himself a plethora of indelible radio hits including "(I'd Be Better Off In) a Pine Box," "Little Houses," "Jukebox With a Country Song," "Warning Labels," "I Never Knew Love" among many others. However, with the advent of the post Shania Twain-era quest for younger and more hip artists, somehow Stone's favor with country radio started to wane. And after a few missteps, namely the abysmal "Make Up in Love" CD and the largely ignored "Long Way Home," Stone is finally back with his first album of new and stellar material in years. Returning to his mother milk of spiffy romantic balladry, Stone has once again proved that he has not lost an iota of his affecting élan. Vocally at his apogee, Stone's unmistakably tenor has had never been marked by such a rejuvenated maturity that encompasses both depth and dimension.
Released under the enterprising independent Lofton Creek imprint, "In a Different Light" contains 4 evergreen pop covers, 8 new songs and 2 of Stone's big hits. Of the new songs, "How Do You Get Off the Moon" is the grand slam of romantic excavates. Invoking the quixotic mesmerism of the galactic stars, on this Randy Boudreaux, Donny Kees and Kerry K. Philips composition, Stone is all out to please his lady friend. Sung with not a modicum of pretension, "How Do You Get Off the Moon" ranks lofty as one of Stone's romantic classic. Equally heart throbbing is "Let the Light Shine on You" which is another Randy Boudreaux co-composition. Romantic intoxication has never been more sweetly deadly as this fiddle and steel guitar infused ballad. A reprise of Stone's number 1 hit ballad "In a Different Light" further enhances the romantic aura of the album. Even when it's recorded over a decade and a half ago, "In a Different Light" is still fresh and illuminating. Further in-roads to the heart are found in the plaintive big ballad "The Beginning of the End." This Rusty Van Sickle and Jeff Jones ballad that tells of the story of a suspecting husband hit by the news of a relationships end is emotionally riveting.
Of the covers, vanguard single "Georgia on My Mind" is the old Hoagy Carmichael's chestnut. Delivered at a languid pace with that after dark jazzy tavern feel, Stone's take of "Georgia" has an inveigling feel found on Willie Nelson's "Crazy." With the promptings of some sweet sounding steel guitars, the Ande Rand and Buck Ram pop classic "Only You (And You Only)" has a genial rustic appeal that could work with country radio. Lest one gets the impression that Stone is mawkishly maudlin, this Georgian native does swagger with some machismo on the bluesy "Tell It Like It Is."
Though the name Doug Stone is synonymous with romance, acute fans would also realized that he has had recorded his share of humorous paeans. Adding to Stone's corpus of drollery classics such as "She's Got a Future in the Movies," "Millionaire" is a light weight ditty has a broken hearted protagonist trying to comfort himself that his estranged wife has freed him to meet a widow of a millionaire. Tackled with a light hearted flare over a catchy tune, "Millionaire" is indeed quite fetching.
Overall, "In a Different Light" is Doug Stone's best album in years. With a heavier tilt towards romantic balladry, Stone is vocally at his best. And like his previous CDs, the songs here are meticulously chosen, melodiously superior and emotionally searching.

This is a great find. I saw T. Griffin at Pete's Candy Store in Brooklyn, which was a perfect place for his music. Intimate little diddies that stick with you for days. "Idaho" and "god's getting tired of you" are standouts, but it's best to just play this one all the way through... great roadtrip companion!

Andy Williams is the best!.......2007-02-01
Just saw Andy Williams at Branson this Christmas! Fabulous! What a great man and entertainer! We purchased this album because Andy sings the song "Words" at his concert but he no longer sells this album in Branson. Amazon is the only place to get this great album! Classic!
Greatest of Andy Williams Works! I give it 5+++++stars!!.......2000-08-22
I just want to second the motion that reviewer Jennifer Leskala has written here on behalf of this album of truly wonderful music. I think it's Andy's best ever. And, I guess I have a soft spot in my heart for it because, I, too, witnessed the dance performance Natalia Melony gave to Andy's work of art. Perhaps you will be able to envision in your mind a beautiful long-haired blonde goddess dancing divinely, and twirling about to this beautiful music.....and I think you WILL see the "Vision" of her as you listen to these incredible pieces of music, done as only Andy Williams can do. Truly one of my favorite albums of all time. It is one you will treasure and want to listen to time and time again. Thanks, Andy, for the wonderful entertainment you continue to give the world. Al Reinking
This is Andy Williams finest work!.......2000-08-13
I happen to believe this is Andy's best album. I can listen to it over and over, it is so beautiful, the words written for the classical melodies are perfection. I also love this album so much because I once saw a lessor-known entertainer by the name of, Natalia Melony, do an entire show of dancing to this entire album of songs. She was something to see. The combination of Andy's music with Natalia's beauty and incredible dancing, was breathtaking. It was so incredible it gave me chills up my spine. In case you are wondering who she is, you can join her fan club on Yahoo. Just punch in her name in the Clubs search box. To my amazement, I just found her name listed and joined her club! To anyone thinking of purchasing this CD, you will not be disappointed. It's one of the best albums in my whole collection of music. Thank you. Jennifer Leskala
One of Andy's best albums. Andy has never sounded better!!.......1999-10-30
This album, recorded in London in 1984, is the finest Williams album of the past several years. The unique blending of classical melodies with lyrics makes this album unlike any other you will find. Andy truly did something magical here. With albums like this it is no wonder that Andy has been a world wide favorite for over forty years. This album is a MUST HAVE for any fan of ANDY WILLIAMS. In addition, any lover of classical music will find this an excellent addition to their collections. Thank you ANDY!!!
it's a great collection !.......1999-09-01
