Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12

This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!

The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

Who Says Christian Music Can't Kick ***?.......2005-08-11

If you never get any other Worship cd ever again in your life and could only keep one, this is it my friends. Just a great, heartfelt, powerful performance and one cd that I've not gotten tired of after all this time. To me that's the test of a great album in any genre let alone Gospel.

Paul is a very talented musician and songwriter and this Catholic is not ashamed to admit that the songs in this compilation really move me. Not a single filler track here and the cd is very well produced and so the sound quality is excellent as well.

God bless Paul Baloche and all those who have been touched by his great gift!

This is the first time I've taken time to write a review...and it's because this is one of the best recordings I've ever heard.
It is intimate, musially VERY interesting and satisfying, and it reveals the heart of the song writer as one in love with God.
I'm a lover of God and good music, and this recording stands out as one of my all-time favorite. Get it...you won't be disappointed.

By listening to this cd you can have an outstanding whorship & intimacy experience with God. If you like worship collections, this is a good one. Some of the songs are overplayed, (Open the Eyes of My Heart, to speak of) but don't let the title stop you. Great intro to worship for contemporary music listeners who don't know what they want.

Great Modern Christian Sampler Album.......2002-07-09

This album has a lot of great music to offer for the price. It is a 2-CD collection of modern Christian worship songs. Overall, it offers a great sampling from some of today's exciting Christian bands. Although some of the songs are found on other albums (Matt Redman's "Light of the World", Glo's "My Glorious"), or are not new songs ("Open the eyes of my heart", "Breathe", "I Could Sing of Your Love Forever") these versions are all good. One other thing I like about this album is that the music covers a wide range of music styles from hard guitar-driven to more melodic slow songs. It presents a nice balance.

This album is a lot like the Revival Generation and Passion CDs, so if you like them, you will most likely enjoy this one also. I recommend it to anyone who is into modern Christian music. If you have not heard much (or any, for that matter) of this style music then this album could serve as a great starting point. It has something to offer to everyone.

A Truely Wonderful Project.......2002-01-14

This album has a great selection of christian artists on it that make it into one great big effoert. It has many great praise and worship hits in it that seem to show God's love and power. Some of the songs make you want to jump around and others make you want to be reverent it God's glory and fall on your knees in worship to our Lord, Jesus Christ. The songs on this CD are very true about the world's situation today with the lack of God in it. If you enjoy modern worship you'll truely love it and soke it up. It's one great worship album!

I absolutely loved this CD. Open The Eyes Of My Heart is one of the best Christian CD's I have. It lifts my spirit when I'm down and especially the hit song "Open The Eyes Of My Heart". I will sing along with that song and it seems as though God is pleased with my request that I want to see Him. I highly recommend the CD. Every song on it is wonderful.

Even amateur like me says--It's perfect!.......2000-08-05

If you have sung in a choir, then I suppose John Rutter's name won't be new to you. He has composed so many beautiful (hence famous) choral music like All Things Bright and Beautiful, For the Beauty of the Earth and The Lord Bless you and Keep you that make him, I can say, the 20th century master of choral music. With their beautiful tunes and harmony, his pieces are widely sung by school chorus, church choir as well as professional choirs.

Rutter's Requiem is no exception. Just that this time he did even better then before. In the past, his music was sometimes criticized as `pop-like'. But in this work we can feel it, both emotionally and musically, more `deep down' than his pass works. This can be reflected by the serious planned structure of the work. According to the composer, the whole piece resembles an arch-like structure. This is archived through the setting of the mass and also the tunes themselves.

Talking about tune, the tunes and harmony of Rutter's Requiem are absolutely beautiful-which make this piece truly touches people's heart. I can still remember the first time I heard Pie Jesu. That performance was only the simplified version of Rutter's Requiem with an organ+oboe+cello+timpani+flute+chorus combination, but still it made me wept for no reason but simply the music. It really did. It is difficult to describe the mysterious strength of the Rutter's Requiem with words, all I can say is: it is magnificent!

No doubt that Polyphony did a great job in this recording-the control of the choir (esp. the dynamic) is nearly perfect. However, what really makes this recording unique form the others is the choice of the soloists. In this recording they chose Rosa Mannion as the soloist. Personally I know nothing about her, but I have to say she really has a nice strong voice. This makes a somewhat special combination, for the fact that in the rest of Rutter's Requiem's recordings boys or thinner-voice-female soloists were used. With the storng soprano Polyphony's recording can be a fairly new experience to the listeners. I Also recommend the other John Rutter's work included in this recording, especially the beautiful choral work The Lord Bless you and Keep you. Again, it reflects the Rutter's nearly perfect choud using technique.

This is not the best recording of Messiah but it is by no means a disaster. Susskind was an able conductor with a valid view of this great piece. The recording from the 1950s is more than adequate (there is some roughness in the treble but it is full and clear - though some edits are very obvious indeed). The orchestra is excellent and the choir sing well. The soloists - all of them - are superb, among the very best in any version of Messiah! Susskind's tempos are slow by modern standards but there is good rhythmical bounce and a genuine sense of the greatness of the piece. If you can adjust to the broad tempos and the big scale conception then you will discover important aspects of this masterpiece in this performance - and the set costs next to nothing!

One of the worst recordings ever made.......2006-05-10

This is only my second one star review. And I am rather generous with stars. But this recording is just horrible, especially considering that all of the participants are legendary musicians. First of all, this is extremely old fashioned Handel. The textures are way too heavy for music of the baroque. But worst of all, the performance just sits there like mud on your tires that won't come off. Yes, the price is very low, but whatever you do, do not buy this recording.

I have had a CD of the London Philharmonic version of the Messiah conducted by Fredrick Jackson for several years and enjoyed listening to it. However, the quality of the recording leaves something to be desired.
