Streams
Editorial Reviews

Based on the concept of healing in times of crisis, Streams combines the talents of contemporary Christian music heavy hitters and the Irish Film Orchestra (who contribute a lavish orchestral suite) in an anthem of comfort for the weary, the hurting, and the spiritually impoverished. From Cindy Morgan's broken-voiced lamentation on "Job" to Chris Rodriguez's plea on "Sanctuary," Streams speaks directly to Christians in times of need, a subject not oft explored in CCM. Brighter territory is surveyed on Sixpence None the Richer's inspirational pop gem "Breathe" and on Jaci Velasquez's breathily angelic rendering of the Michelle Tumes-penned "I Will Rest in You." Intriguing pairings include Jon Anderson of Yes with modern-day soldiers of faith 4Him, Amy Grant's supporting tour of duty on the Delirious-led "Find Me in the River," and a slightly revised version of Peter Gabriel's "Don't Give Up," which features a duet by Irish songbird Maire Brennan and Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers. --Paige La Grone

Truth in advertising is what listeners get from Words beautiful Streams project. Promotional materials reference the projects as a "soundtrack of hope," and that it may be. Producers Loren Balman and Brent Bourgeois have incorporated an array of talented vocalists, songwriters and players, yet have managed to develop an album of material that is not merely a collection of disparate songs and styles around a common theme, but rather a musical experience that cohesively hangs together. Disappointed with this cd. Sounds like static. Would not use this during a healing session.
Mountain Stream CD.......2007-01-10
This my replacement for the first of this CD, I wore out. Is a very pleasant CD to go to sleep by.
Just the sounds -- Great!.......2006-02-01
I was hunting for just the sounds of water (no music mixed in) as a background for reading and relaxing. This one's perfect.
Just shopping around..........2004-06-09
I just had to comment that it is somewhat comforting to know that I am among so many who seem to have a problem sleeping. It is 2:33 AM as I write this where I live and I haven't been to sleep yet. But I think I found the solution. Brainwave entrainment and Jeffery Thompson has the right stuff sold here at Amazon. I purchased his Delta Sleep System about a year ago, and I did not like one of the tapes, but I sware to God the other one put me right out. I then purchased the Alpha Relaxation System (this one I love) and just a few days ago I purchased his Theta Wave System (I really like this one too), its effectiveness blew me away.
What I had discovered before buying these cds, was that my brain had become attuned to the noises around me, particularly the low level humming of my computer, which elevated my brainwave activity. After a lot of reading I learned that the only way to counteract that was to use something that would slow down my brainwave activity and that's what Thompson's tapes do. I do wish he would change the sounds on his Delta Sleep System as I know there are better sleep inducing sounds that could be used, but the one tape I listen to does work and in fact I am going to listen to it in just a few minutes. I have several sound scape cds but I have not been able to sleep to them for long periods. After awhile the Ocean waves start to annoy me and I'm wide awake. The continous rolling ocean sounds are not realistic of ocean patterns. The sounds should begin to drift off as the day grows dark and the tide goes out (unless there is a storm), at least that's the way it has been whenever I've been to the beach. At night the ocean seems to be calmer and quieter and you don't hear birds, maybe a little wind.
But if you are really looking for real relaxation I'd check out Jeffery Thompson's Systems.
Alot of the reviews I've read on the different cds and dvds have been really helpful so I thought I would just share this info with you guys. Thanks.
SO RELAXING..........2004-06-07
this has to be one of the best water sounds cds ive bought yet. sure there are bits where it obvious that the sound is fading from one stream to another, but i thought it was done very well and found it still very relaxing. this is one of my favorite cds and gets played a lot (except when its cold or im busting to go to the toilet).

Nice Collection.......2007-03-05
I have many collections of Purcell's Music. This collection stands up to them at half the price. Solid buy.
PERFECT!.......2006-10-26
There is only a word with which I can describe this set of discs: perfect!
The only flaw there is, is not related to the singing or playing: no text enclosed.
Great singing and excellent value for money.......2004-09-19
This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!
More than two hours of beautiful 17th century 'ayres'.......2001-08-02
Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

Album Description
The first rays of sunlight pierce the morning mist, revealing a serene glade hidden deep within the forest. The gentle melodies of David Gordon's piano float through the trees, as birdsong and a bubbling stream seem to join in. The meadow awakens to the whisper on a silver flute and the pure tones of Steve Gordon's acoustic guitar. Relax and visit this peaceful place in the forest, anytime you desire peace of mind.

Complex serenity.......1999-02-03
David and Steve Gordon have converged the art of creativity, e.g. musical spirit, with Nature's sounds of life in this phenomenally peaceful collection of sound. Their skill has remained colorfully competent, bringing the listener into the cool forest of notes, gurgles and chirps. Highly recommended.
This CD is a must for those who crave "environmental music"........1999-01-08
I bought the cassette tape verison of this work several years ago. I wanted to have some background music for at home activities such as: drawing, reading, and meditation.
I own about 30 other CDs and tapes of this kind of music. Misty Forest Morning is by far the best of the lot.
This very calming mix of flute, guitar, and water sounds will propel you instantly into a theta state.
Don't leave your body without it!

Mountain Streams.......2007-03-21
I was sent the wrong CD. When I opened it and put it into my CD player it was christmas music. I thought it might just be the first song, but it was the whole cd. I needed it desperately for my new business and was let down. Just a waste of money.
Pitty.......2001-12-11
They took the pleasent sound of a stream and than ruined it with old sappy songs. I was lucky enough to find someone to give it away to who would like it. I wish on the discriptions they would put if it has music or not. Thanks

the music is so inspiring and relaxing the sound of water and its relaxing effect calms the mind

Exceptional for Love-making.......2003-02-08
This is far and away both my wife and my favorite CD for making love. Incredibly romantic, gentle and soothing, it has the ability to really heighten and prolong our intimate encounters assisting to transport us to new heights of ecstacy. We have been Tantric practitioners for over 10 years and this blissfully relaxing musical adventure consistantly accompanies our most passionate times together. Thank you again David & Steve Gordon for continuing to deliver inspired, fresh, heartfelt music that exhalts the soul.
Relaxing.......2000-02-11
I am a fan of the Gordon's and find their music inspiring, moving, and relaxing. Their drum music is far the best score that they play, although this CD is on a different plane, it is still worth the purchase. Enjoy it!
excellent for peace of mind.......1999-10-01
This CD is excellent for calming you at the end of a hectic day!!! VERY relaxing, especially if you enjoy nature noises, in particular waterfalls.

I expected good music from one parent to another parent.......2007-05-03
While her vocals are great (and very reminiscent of a blend of Alanis Morissette and Sarah McLachlan) and I did expect a collection of songs from the heart of a parent, I was disappointed to find language that would require a bar of soap in a household of children. I can't play this when my kids are around! What's the point in that?
A truly gifted artist who has an unbelievable voice.......2006-01-30
I discovered Kath Fisher on itunes and fell in love with her album "One". Her voice is truly her instrument, so controlled and multi-layered, soulful and capable of long notes and belts. She has a good range, with shades of Tori, Alanis, but with a deep tone that makes her truly unique. Her lyrics are cool, with an enunciation that makes them understandable. Her tunes are catchy, but not your typical radio pop, though I have heard her on San Diego radio. Standouts include "I will love you" on ONE; I love "Beautiful Life" which you may recognize from the Toyota commerical; and "The Lovely Years" from the new album of the same name. I actually have all of her albums, and all songs are just great. UPPERS AND DOWNERS is an album of 1/2 quick tempo songs and 1/2 slower songs, with lots of covers, including a cool version of "Dream On". If you are looking for a great, but for some reason undiscovered in the mainstream true talent, you can't go wrong with Fisher. Why isn't this girl famous?
It's a beautiful album.......2005-07-20
If you like Sarah, Tori or the Indigo girls you will love this album
Great if you are a new parent..........2005-06-15
I love Fisher's music, and bought this the day it came out. The music is good, but I was a little disappointed that the theme for the album was about how wonderful it is to be parents. Not that babies aren't wonderful, they are, but if you aren't a new parent you may not relate well to this album and True North would be a better pick.
lovely years, voice, lyrics and music = er, lovely!.......2005-05-07
new moms will be particularly attracted to the pretty songs. the lullaby "you" is especially nice -- one of only two Lullaby songs to actually make me weepy-eyed thinking about my wee one (who is now 8) (the other song was "baby mine" by alison krauss)
her voice is as lush and memorable as ever, and the music and arrangements are even better than on previous works.
stand outs other than "you": "all i ask" "beautiful day" "sleepy head" "lovely years" "turn around" and "be here".
good stuff! cd universe has the cd for $3 cheaper. i guess amazon gets their shipping cost one way or another.....

The name Steve Roach has been synonymous with ambient music for years. His latest excursion into late-night musical improvisations explores the purely ethereal side of his signature style without percussion, except for the second track, "Spirit Moves." Even there, the rhythmic propulsion is gentle. The six compositions making up this 74-minute epic have been fashioned from Ebow, electric guitar, and various digital processing gear. Yet, while the instrumental origins of the album are electric and electronic, the end results are organic, as if they were literally streaming forth from the composer's subconscious. As with many Roach recordings, the music twists and weaves in abstract ways, traversing a ghostly path through one's imagination. As an aural narcotic, it is certainly an effective stress-reliever. Although the guitar sounds add a fresher element to Streams & Currents, the album ultimately does not break much new ground in this composer's massive catalog, but Roach's disciples will certainly find much to enjoy while journeying along its shadowy sonic trails. --Bryan Reesman
Customer Reviews:
Not His Best Work, But Worth Having.......2006-07-14
'Streams and Currents' does not compare to 'Dreamtime Return' (1988) or 'On Ritual Ground' (1992) or any of his other, more original works, but it is still worth having. I listened to this album at Silver Platters before I bought it, and read the accompanying notes on the screen. It said that 'Streams and Currents' had no overdubbing, that they were basically recorded on one take, and for that reason alone I was not disappointed. Roach's work is consistent, focused and spontaneous, just the way I like it. I learned today that he is responsible for a MIDI sequence code that other ambient artists use--he really knows what he is doing with his synthesizers. All jargon aside, this album along with his better works are theraputic: I use them to relax, to fall asleep and to meditate. I'm not into vocals during these times, just pure ambience. Anything else included in the background, such as rhythmic home-made drums or the pleasingly bent pitches of his guitar licks are all part of the plan.
'Streams and Currents' is just another delicious flavor of ice cream for the mind. 'Quiet Music' and 'Mystic Chords & Sacred Space' are my two favorite alternate flavors, not counting the must-have 'Dreamtime Return.' I'm planning on getting 'Immersion: One', the first in a planned series of eight discs that are each one track over 70 minutes long of more tantalizing electronic bliss, along with 'Mantram', which I also gave a pre-listening to. Highly preferred over the works he does with Vidna Obmana, which are utterly too dark for my interests. Roach also works well with Michael Stearns and Kevin Braheny ('Desert Solitare,' for instance).
Ethereal Ambient Musique Perfectionado!.......2005-02-03
Steve Roach is the master at ambient and ethereal sounding music. On this album he took basic instruments such as guitars and the such and dostorted and changed notes and made other alterations to create a new world of ethereal beauty. With the exception of my favourite track (the over twenty minute "Spirit Moves") there are no drums. This is the kind of music that will calm, inspire, and project your mind, body, and soul into another dimension of feeling and wonderment. The music will take its time getting to where it's going and it is purely amazing.
subtle beauty.......2005-01-17
I appreciate the more subtle nature of this cd which is predominantly on tracks 4,5 and 6. When listened to closely, there are truly some beautiful moments on this cd.
Eh........2003-08-01
Eh. Thats basically my response to this work by Roach. It just didn't do anything for me. Some people really liked this one, but I just found it uninspiring---it just didn't grab me like some of his other albums. The treated guitar sounds were a bit annoying at times. Still you may think it worth having if you're a Roach fan.
Stream and currents to carry your mind and soul.......2002-09-30
Roach's second guitar based work proves that is it not always the equipment or instrumentation that makes the artist or his works. Primarily known as a master of the synthesizer, Roach's guitar worlds flow with just as much emotion and impact as his classic 'Structures from Silence'.
With only one track containing any sense of rhythm, the album is a blissful drift, like the title suggests of gently flowing waters of emotion and currents of meditation.
Upon hearing, some might wonder if it actually is a guitar being used, as the signature Roach sound treatments apply to morph the sound away from any conventional guitar tonality.
A fantastic late night disc.

Brilliant, crushing, heartbreaking...........2006-07-12
this is one of the best records of all time. Definetely in my top ten. I bought this when it came out figuing it would be similar to Hum, and in a lot of way it is, but it really transcends what Hum was doing and expounds upon it. Matt Talbot has simplified his approach, the songs are very hypnotic and repetitive and for the most part are comprised of only one or two riffs. he repeats these over and over for maximum crushing effect, and of course there is a gloriuous and haunting sadness to his voice. this record moves me every time i listen to it, and it has inspired me more than almost anything else in the last ten years. this record is sure to be criminally underrated and i think the bad reviews here are way off base. this is NOT HUM 2.0, this is Matt Talbot crafting something gorgeous and personal. plus-it's heavy as hell. the guitar5s are destroying angels of sound.
Centaur - In Streams - Hum Light.......2006-05-18
See my review on Hum's You'd Prefer An Astronaut - one of the all time greats. Hum is one of the all-time greats. I really like this Centaur album. It took a little longer to like it than it did Hum - not as dense, but just as melodic - actually more melodic - Hum Light. My favorite is track 4 - Strangers On 5. Try the album - just don't expect Hum. But it's still Matt Talbot, it's still melodic, it's still the feel of Hum - just toned down a little.
A gross disappointment at best..........2006-02-24
First, I should begin by saying it's inherently wrong to judge any spin-off album in the light of an album or series of albums from which it spawned. However, one really has no authority to judge "In Streams" without knowing a little something about the works of Hum, perhaps the greatest rock band of the '90's. If Hum is Stonehenge in the music world, then Centaur is the fossilized piece of dog crap lying on the ground next to it.
Seriously, I consider myself a Hum fanatic, and as other reviewers have mentioned, fans of Hum might be the only people interested in "In Streams." That's why I bought it. But please, don't waste your money. Two albums from the same front man could not be more different. If you think Matt Talbott is a great song writer, you'll hate him after listening to Centaur. For one, the songs are tired and impotent. Most of them sound EXACTLY THE SAME. The hardest track on the album is "In Streams." Just to give you an idea of how not-hard this song is, it has a four minute synth outro. Pa-the-tic. Not only are the songs tired and impotent, but the entire album is poorly mixed as well. Parts sound as if they were recorded in one half-hearted take, and songs like "Life Begins" feature rasping distorted bass and sloppy percussions that set a dismal mood for the rest of the album.
I said before that without at least a rudimentary familiarity with Hum, Centaur cannot be judged appropriately. I maintain that this is true. "In Streams" does not even stand alone as an album, as listeners not acquainted with Talbott's history will grow bored and fed up with his whining vocals and the excrutiatingly simplistic melodies. Hum fans, however, will recognize the true nature of this musical failure, and be downright disgusted. What it boils down to is that Centaur is lacking three critical elements. They are in order; Bryan St. Pere, Tim Lash and Jeff Dimpsey.
Centaur.......2006-01-29
I wish the rest of you actually got HUM, because you would know how much they meant to the people who got them. Not to knock anyone who would read this cause if you did'nt care you would not be reading this, but if you love HUM than you have to love this cd. So classic it makes me sick. Shut up and turn it up, whatever you want cause it is a peice of something that will never be again and I will take Centaur. If you ever seen HUM live anywhere than you have an ounce of humanity or something that draws you to them, and no matter what you think
< HUM will always be there. Listen to The Same Place really loud and if you love HUM then you love Centaur!
Droning and for the most part monochromatic. Uninspiring........2005-02-03
I'm gonna be the bitchy dark-haired female student from Solondz's "Storytelling," for awhile. So, maybe it's just me, but this is not a CD that I derived any pleasure from. Bought it in mid-2003. Put it on while writing. No impact at all. Bored the hell out of me. I let it sit for a couple of months. Put it back on while playing some video games. Bored the crap out of me, again. I let it sit for a year- put it back on. Guess what?
First of all, the price is wrong, biznitch- 18 bux for 8 songs? C'mon (the Cd does clock in at 55 minutes- so average song length is about 6 minutes, if that makes up for something). If you're a hardcore Hum/Talbott fan you should look around ebay or trawl a good record store, wait for a used copy to pop up in here.
Personally, I'm not feeling this. And since only hardcore Hum fans will probably be checking this out I'm treading on thin ice... Oh well.
Pensive shoegazer impuissance. the songs are toooooooooo looooooooong.
The first track (and the 2nd, 4th, 6th) sounds like a Collective Soul tune on Xanax. Plus, at 2:10 you can hear Talbott try to hit a high note and not pull it off. my first cringe. track 2 sounds like it would made for a nice bridge in track 1. Not a whole song. Echoey vox attempt to lend ambience.
If you like repitition, worn-out lyrical cliches ("Wait for the Sun?" Uh, Oh, yeah. here it comes, the sun that is... little darlin...) and amateur studio theatrics- this may appeal. If you like talbott's minimalist singing then this will certainly appeal. He and his crew do a decent enough job of piling up guitar tracks and layered pedal effects like some cross-pollination of My Bloody valentine meets... well, I think the Collective Soul analogy stands... Maybe they should have called the band My bloody valium. Or My Bloodless valentine?
Take track 3. "The Same Place." A good title- as The opening 4 chord rhythm change is strummed, repeatedly, for about two minutes and 10 seconds until the vox come in. This same progression is churned like a sullen four year old swirling a spoon in a bowl of gruel for about 6 minutes. This song is an example of th rest of the CD, as talbott & Co. stay true to their winning formula... The exception is "Placencia," track 5: not a bad tune. Even though the mid-song distorted bridge is about 24 bars too long. Nice psychedelic feel. Decent lead guitar- not a bad song, but not a grand one, either- it would not have been out of place on Hum's last CD. Track 8 is ok too.
The lyrics: Hum's lyrics and Matt's voice were never what sucked me into the band- I never listened to their words at all really, I have no idea what he was singing about. I just liked the overall sound of the band- their density. Plus- I can count on one hand the individual Hum songs that I dig- their Cds were better as architectural spires of sound, when reduced to the simple songs- something went amiss... That soething is displayed on this.
In the final say- I can whole-heartedly recommend the CD put out by Gifted (what a horrible band name. Which reminds me- naming a band after a mythological creature, 30 years after the 70's- not a good idear. not at all.), but not this. In fact, I'll probablybe selling it in here any day now. 3 stars just because there's worse. MUCH WORSE. out there.

Saxophonist/clarinetist Joe Lovano teamed up with arranger/conductor/educator Gunther Schuller on their 1995 disc, Rush Hour. On this date, Lovano's big and buoyant tenor sound fronts three trios and two Schuller-conducted large ensembles. The five-part title work is a third-stream, free-form shout-out to Lovano's influences, ranging from Eric Dolphy to Ornette Coleman. "Moon Dreams," "Move," and "Boplicity," are three movements from the immortal 1949-50 Miles Davis/Gil Evans Birth of the Cool sessions. Schuller, who played French horn on the original dates, illuminates those selections which his introductions, interludes, endings, and segues. The ebullient "Buckeyes" and "Blue Sketches" and the Ben Webster-dedicated blues "Big Ben," which features Lovano on the aulochrome, a new double-soprano saxophone, are the stand-alone tracks. "We're not just playing parts," Lovano writes in his liner notes, "we are creating music within the orchestration, shaping new arrangements as we go along." --Eugene Holley, Jr.

a tribute of love.......2007-05-22
lovano's move doesn't sound much different from the gil evans/miles davis move. my favorite move is by charlie parker, and hearing parker on alto is different from hearing a large group performing the piece. but that's a preference, not a judgment. i've always loved archie shepp's versions of granchan monchur's frankenstein and sonny's back. recently i heard the same tunes recorded by granchan moncur's octet, and i had to step back...not the same as with shepp's tenor, but a matter of preference. and then there's coltrane's a love supreme recorded by marsalis leading a big band. acceptance is the key, someone once told me. listening to the recording yesterday, on the fire prophets i realized that lovano had taken improvisational pieces that sanders, shepp, ayler and coltrane, might had played and arranged them for a large group, his nonet.
he attributes the inspiration for big ben to ben webster and rahsaan roland kirk, but the tone i'm hearing is closer to ornette coleman.
ultimately this is one man's, joe lovano's, tribute of love for jazz and the artists who came before him.
Streams of Expresssion indeed!.......2007-01-28
For many Miles Davis' 'Birth of the Cool' is a defining, desert-island favorite. Recorded during three sessions, two in 1949 and one in early '50, this record not only stands as one of the most auspicious debuts as a leader, it served as the template for what would become known as 'cool jazz,' a comparatively understated approach which flourished on the West Coast in the '50's as a stylistic contrast to the more fervent bop-infused styles which dominated the East Coast scene.
On French horn in Davis' nonet for that third session was Gunther Schuller, who has since gone on to earn acclaim as a composer and arranger, while also becoming one of the figures most associated with 'third stream' jazz (he coined the term) -- an extension of the cool style which also incorporates elements of classical music.
Consequently, when saxophonist Joe Lovano was commissioned to explore the music of this seminal recording, Schuller was an enlightened and obvious choice.
The ensuing 'Streams of Expression,' recently released on Blue Note, features Schuller's 'The Birth of the Cool Suite' as its centerpiece, both figuratively and literally as it is bookended by Lovano's own five-part suite 'Streams of Expression.'
Utilizing instrumentation that varies slightly from Davis', Schuller pays meticulous attention to detail as he integrates specific elements from the original performances and Gil Evans' legendary arrangements into a trio of tunes -- 'Moon Dreams,' 'Move' and 'Boplicity' -- from the original album.
Tying these together with his own 'Prelude,' 'Postlude' and two 'Interludes,' Schuller describes in the liner notes how he recast this small part of the genre's Holy Grail.
Fortunately, what reads as though it could have been an over-academic exercise in dissection, it captures and evokes the interplay and spirit which have made the original 'Birth' an enduring, timeless classic of modern jazz.
Lovano's 'Streams' is also particularly effective, with the initial two movements that precede Schuller's 'Suite' sounding as though they are companion pieces.
Subsequent sections find him paying homage to a wide-range of influences, from Eric Dolphy and Charles Mingus on the alto clarinet feature 'Enchantment- Part III,' presented in a trio setting, to Ornette Coleman, Wayne Shorter and Sonny Rollins on 'Second Nature- Part IV.'
The disc is rounded out with three additional trio performances -- a group format that Lovano has explored to great effect on previous discs. Of these, 'Big Ben,' as well as the final part of the 'Streams' suite both feature Lovano playing the Aulochrome, a custom-made instrument that resembles two soprano saxophones joined together. Configured such that the keys on each can be played either together or separately, the instrument lends an intriguing new dimension to Lovano's already vast sonic palette.
Don't be spooked by the recording's cerebral press clippings........2007-01-02
All of the critical commotion that this recording created may paradoxically have been injurious to its popularity with jazz followers. It's no "Birth of the Cool" or "Miles Ahead," but "Streams of Expression," in addition to its artful arrangements, is perhaps the most accessible and agreeable project to date by the first saxophonist since Coltrane and Rollins, Dexter and Getz, to achieve a truly original, instantly identifiable voice on the instrument. He combines the sound of Ben Webster and Sonny Rollins in a way that is almost "speech-like." It took me a while to give Lovano's sound its due (often the notes are so clipped and unsustained that pitch recognition is difficult), but I finally realized how effectively it represented an amalgamation of past traditions along with a valid modern form of expression. There are lots of merely "good," even "bad" (as in "really" good), players out there; few, however, are actually original, despite some extravagant self-proclamations.
Lovano is in charge of the proceedings throughout, even though there are numerous other stand-out soloists, some ideally presented for the short-attention-span listener (e.g. the 2nd movement features a cavalcade of 4-bar solos, including Lovano's). The "Birth of the Cool Suite" presents this classic session in modern fidelity that may lead some listeners to prefer it to the Miles Davis-Gil Evans original. Finally, Lovano covers all styles, including a multi-timbral gizmo that makes him sound like Roland Kirk.
In short, the best Lovano recording to date.
Very good, but when's he going to find his metier?.......2006-08-17
Joe Lovano is undoubtedly one of the premier sax voices of his generation. With Michael Brecker and David Murray, he stands head and shoulders above his peers.
Strangely, however (or maybe not so strangely; one need only look at the late career of, say, Sonny Rollins, to see genius gone awry), he seems to be struggling of late to find his proper MO. His last two quartet albums were certainly enjoyable enough, if not revelatory. Before that, he had a series of highly arranged discs (52nd Street Themes, Celebrating Sinatra, and Viva Caruso) that faltered, failing to present his outrageous chops and brilliant conception optimally. My favorite disc of his of late is Gathering of Spirits, a co-led session with Brecker and Dave Liebman.
This disc, which features many delights and should not be gainsaid, nevertheless continues the problematic trend. It seems to me that Lovano is going through a kind of final-Joe Henderson period, in which the late, great sax giant near the end of his life was subjected to a number of concept sessions that, fine as they were, came across as somewhat artificial--the Brazilian disc, the Miles tribute, the Strayhorn session, the big band date.
That said, the music here rings with huge authenticity and gravitas. Lovano simply rises above any strictures, however artificial, that may be put in his way. A kind of Third-Stream, Re-birth of the Cool date, this disc contains such remarkable arranging and playing that only a curmudgeon or jazz novice would complain. A kind of high point is reached on track ten, "The Fire Prophets," where the leader and altoist Steve Slagle engage in some righteous blowing. And the finale, a tribute to Rahsaan Roland Kirk, featuring Lovano playing aulochrome, that is, two soprano saxes simultaneously, simply astounds.
I was originally going to give this disc only four stars. After listening to it many times, I believe it deserves a full five. That said, I hope Joe Lovano will eventually find his way to a band/setting that will fully give expression to his brilliance. In the meantime, one could do a lot worse than listening to this always engaging and often exhilarating music.
Highly recommended.
