Memphis Homecoming
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
A true show of shows. Even if you are not a dedicated fan of the Gaithers, you will find this project endearing. Longtime pillars of the Christian music industry, the Gaither Vocal Band is renowned for their Southern gospel zeal, and this project is no exception. Masters of performance, the Gaithers and their Homecoming Friends (James Blackwood, the Martins, Sandi Patti, and others) do it up in style for this energetic display of devotion and talent. Between the ecstatic gospel and Southern crooning, the soloists, choir, song selection, and audience interaction cause a carefree response to swell within the heart. The magical glow of this live performance and the tradeoff vocal style that brings a community feel into the music create what seems like a holiday gathering between the Gaithers and their friends. It is a warm, happy, and good-natured production. You will likely find yourself wishing that you had been there. --Israel Button

A good value.......2007-05-17
I wasn't expecting to have 4 discs for this price, and the music is a quality selection of film music, giving a good scope of the genre, and a very listenable transfer.

A mixed collection of movie music.......2006-02-23
For the price, this CD is a great bargain. The musical selections, as you might expect, are mixed in quality ranging from extraordinary to so so, the balance being worthwhile and interesting. Sonically the CD is excellent.

I know it's "only Rock and Roll," but I LOVE it!.......2003-09-13
OK, CERTAINLY it could've been produced better - but, hey, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, and Jerry Lee Lewis all on one CD, commemorating the birth of Rock and Roll? Like Perkins sings in "Birth Of Rock And Roll," "I was here when it all happened - I watched Memphis give birth to rock and roll." And that's the truth, folks. Yes, it is WAY too slickly produced (WHY Chips Moman and NOT Sam Phillips?), but these guys - and, of course, The King, Elvis - INVENTED Rock And Roll. Notice I said "Rock And Roll" there, NOT "rock," there's all the difference in the world. Yeah, these guys were making this kind of music back when it was DANGEROUS. I guess the current generation knows only of Roy Orbison by way of the (one-off) Traveling Wilburys back in (whew..1988), or Johnny Cash by (ugh) "Boy Named Sue," or Jerry Lee by the allegations of his...naughtiness. But if you want to know how rock and roll originally sounded, check out the afore-mentioned Carl Perkins song, or, especially, Jerry Lee's "Keep My Motor Running." (yup, you can just BET "motor" was a metaphor...) The tour-de-force of the CD, though, is John Fogerty's "Big Train From Memphis," which has a veritable who's who of everybody who was THERE when rock and roll got started, including Sam Phillips, Chips Moman, and some PRIMO rockers, Ricky Nelson and John Fogerty. (It even has the-love(s)-of-my-life, Naomi and Wynonna Judd...) OK, quit listening to your "alt-rock" radio station for about half an hour and dig this CD. You'll understand why a lot of people think Rock and Roll died when Elvis did. And, by the way, get "The Best Of Big Daddy" while IT'S still available!

Album Description
"This is a musical homecoming inspired by the sounds I've heard and loved in Memphis through the years. It's a joy to honor the musicians who originally created them by keeping them alive in my own way.
My love of music and life has given me all I've needed to keep singing in spite of some critics' past opinions. This CD is my answer to them, my gift to those who believed in me, and my proudest reward to myself for never giving up."
- Cybill Shepherd
Customer Reviews:
Hideous.......2004-06-16
Is there a rating below one star? I paid one dollar for this CD, and I paid way too much. I am a fan of Cybill's TV and film work, but this CD is hideous beyond belief. Each and every track on this sounds like something from the American Idol reject show. Why, Cybill, why?
Beautiful Memphis music from a Memphis lady.......2003-06-02
Cybill actually began as a folk singer before becoming famous as an actress. Her acting career is of no interest to me, so my assessment of Cybill is based entirely on her ability as a singer and the quality of the music. No problem there - Cybill has a lovely voice and uses it well on a selection of songs that may be described as jazz with a blues flavor.
Three of the songs - Power of love, Mama's cooking and Find another fool - are covers of Marcia Ball songs. Marcia is an excellent blues-rock singer-songwriter, whose songs Cybill does full justice to. The old standard Tennessee waltz began life as a country song but has been covered by singers in many genres of music. Cybill's version is certainly impressive. Other brilliant covers include Beale Street blues and Walking the dog.
Cybill co-wrote the title track, a superb song that really says what the album is all about. If you enjoy jazz with a touch of blues, you will surely enjoy this album.
Gary From Sunny AZ.......2000-02-12
Cybill's voice is undeniably one of the best kept secrets in America. I'd put her along side Barbara Strisand and Whitney Houston. Her voice is truly distinctive and uncommon. Why this CD isn't at the top of the best seller list is probably because she has a lousy marketing team. "Talk To Me Memphis" is a combination of blues and jazz with some very enthusiastic arrangements thrown in to make this CD an outstanding musical event. Cybill flirts with the listener as she takes you on a brilliant and harmonious journey that delights the senses. You'll have fun listening to this very well done and upbeat CD. After I listened to each song, the first time through, I actually went out and purchased an expensive set of headphones so I could catch every heavenily note and listen more intimately to Cybill's unmistakably beautiful voice. If you want to treat yourself to a delightful hour of music that you can't help but love, I'd reccommend that you buy this CD today. And, if Cybill's marketing people read this, how about letting the whole world know that this lady has a voice that's as good as anyone I've ever heard. Get to work! Moviestar, television star and singing sensation... that's Cybill. Give us more!
"TALK MEMPHIS TO ME".......1999-12-16
I have never listened to a variety of music that made me visuallise so much. When I listened to tracks like "BALE STREET BUES" and the album track "TALK MEMPHIS TO ME", I closed my eyes and I was in a smoke filled,down-towm New York jazz club in the 30's and Mrs Sephard was singing away through the cold new york night while the sound of city traffic ond police syrens were drowned away by the lilting melody and entrancing accomponyment. I surgest you buy this album because it will not only inspire you it will take you back in time as she "TALKS MEMPHIS TO ME".
Sort Of A Dissapointment!.......1999-08-20
Loved all of Cybill's earler efforts including "Cybill Does It To Cole Porter" and even "At Long Last Love".,but this one does not make it! Hope her next project is better!

Customer Reviews:
Boo bop a lop bam boom.......2004-04-10
This was conceived as sort of a reunion of the "Million Dollar Quartet", with Roy Orbison taking the place of the late Elvis Presley. The results are decent, but each man has done much better work than what is featured here. Each singer gets two solo songs, with the exception of "The Big O", and there are three songs featuring all four legends taking turns singing lead. Like I said, it is a decent album, but nothing exceptional. Nonetheless, fans of these legends may want to get it. Here is a list of who sings what:
1. Birth of Rock and Roll (Perkins)
2. Sixteen Candles (Lewis)
3. Class of '55 (Perkins)
4. Waymore's Blues (all)
5. We Remember the King (Cash)
6. Coming Home (Orbison)
7. Rock and Roll (all)
8. Keep My Motor Running (Lewis)
9. I Will Rock and Roll With You (Cash)
10. Big Train (all)
One final remark: Who would have guessed that Jerry Lee Lewis would be the last one of these guys alive?
Nice to see them together.......2003-01-28
Can't say this one gets much play, but it is good to see them together.
excellent.......1999-10-05
the whole theme of this album is good,i feel fortunate to have co-written waymores blues with waylon jennings,Curtis Buck
WoW!!! Best album in my collection!!.......1998-07-07
I purchased the record album in 1986 when in first came out under the PolyGram label and emediately fell in love with it. Four of my favorite artists on one album. Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash. WoW!!! This album does not dissapoint!!! Especially if you are a Carl Perkins fan. The opening track of 'Birth Of Rock And Roll' is one of Perkins's best vocal outputs. (My opinion as an owner of several of his albums.) Jerry Lee does a great rendition of his old hit 'Sixteen Candles' with his three buddies in support and his 'Keep My Motor Running' is classic Lewis. Cash's old hit 'I Will Rock And Roll With You' has its best rendition ever on this album thanks to the other three singing support. Orbison's voice can be heard in a major supporting role on all the tracks. I own several albums from each of the artists, but this is the one I keep coming back to. D.W.Sullivan, Elbridge, NY

I love this kind of music it keeps me going and they all do keep up with the music give it try do not take my word on you need to listen to it thats it
Build an ark.......2005-07-07
I'm sure a lot of people are like me, in thinking that these Homecomings aren't very good, except for the vocal band. On this CD, they sing "build an Ark," previously recorded with Jonathan Pierce on Tenor. Now its with Guy Penrod and David Phelps, so you know what that means!
Fantastic Album!.......2005-02-02
I love this album. Amazing vocal talents Sandi Patty, Allison Durham Speer, and David Phelps add their tremendous talents to this incredible album.
Standouts are:
He's Worthy - Allison Speer
Searchin - Various Artists
Yes, God is Real - Sandi Patty
The Greatest!.......2000-06-27
Holy Ground, Lord Send your Angels, God is Good All the Time, He's Worthy..All these songs are such wonderful songs. Who's better to be singing them than some of the best southern gospel music artists. Allison Durham Speer, The Gaither Vocal Band, The Happy Goodmans, all of these people's voices touch our hearts as they sing these beautiful songs. This cd really brings out the harmony in all these people. I recommend it to everyone.
Another Awesome Gaither Product.......2000-06-22
This tape is another awesome Gaither production. Jeanne Johnson & Ivan Parker are fantastic on Where No One Stands Alone. Also, Lord Send Your Angels by Candy Christmas is delightful. As we've come to expect, many of these selections will bring tears to your eyes. Memphis Homecoming is another powerful production that will remind you of days gone by and have you longing for home. Keep 'em coming, Bill.
