Taking its inspiration from Oswald Chamber's classic daily devotional of the same name, My Utmost for His Highest is a collaboration of many of the top names in Christian music, each performing songs that pertain to a certain day from Chamber's devotional. Lest you think of this as merely a fantastic marketing ploy to sell more copies of Chamber's book, the depth of honesty and chronicling of spiritual truth contained in this album are unparalleled.

Some songs come closer than others in relating to Oswald's point each day. Steven Curtis Chapman nails it on the head with "Sometimes He Comes in the Clouds," when he sings, "Sometimes His face cannot be found/Sometimes the sky is dark and gray/But some things can only be known/And sometimes our faith can only grow when we can't see/So, sometimes He comes in the clouds." Acknowledging that God sees and works in us where we can't even see, Sandi Patty scores with "God of All of Me," in which she confesses "Lord, in my soul, in secret parts of me/There are places in my heart that only You can reach/Brighter shines my hope than the morning light/Deeper is my stain of sin than any dark of night." Twila Paris also connects with "Where He Leads Me" where she acknowledges our need to be receptive to God's call on all of our lives.

Beautifully produced by Brown Bannister, this Utmost project tends to be pretty mellow and reflective, keeping the focus on the message of the songs. Michael W. Smith's songs "Move in Me" which proclaims the confidence of God's reality as being found inside his heart, has a tremendous orchestration to it but with a melody reminiscent of his songs "All I Needed to Say" and "Do You Dream of Me.'

Other great performances are turned in by Amy Grant on "Lover of My Soul," Gary Chapman on "Man After Your Own Heart," Cindy Morgan on "You'll Be There," and Bryan Duncan on "A Heart Like Mine." -- Mark A. Smeby (c) 1995 CCM Communications, Inc.

Good music for the soul.......2007-02-19

HI: I recently bought this CD and fell in love with it. It has wonderful soul music, and you can fall asleep with it. I also bought the other cd , the covenant, and both are very good. I wish there were more songs, but in comparison to rock and pop music, this cd has great depth to it.

Great worship album.......2006-08-31

My sister gave me this CD when I first arrived in the US for college in the fall of 1997. And I have loved it ever since.
Each song will definitely speak to particular instances in your life.
I highly recommend it.

The BEST Compilation Album of Christian Music!.......2002-10-08

All the songs are great on this CD. A friend lent it to me to listen to one song and I ended up loving all of them and had to buy my own. It's a great album for personal praise and worship time.

I'd list my favorites but I'd end up listing all of them! I will talk briefly about some of the songs, though:

YOU ARE HOLY (4 Him) - What a great way to open the CD. The group sings beautifully on this song and the complex vocal arrangements really lift you up to a different level.

LOVER OF MY SOUL (Amy Grant) - My eyes always well up with tears when she sings the chorus. Just to know that Jesus is always with us!

MAN AFTER YOUR OWN HEART (Gary Chapman) - We are God's creation and must strive to please Him for He has supplied us with so much. A humbling song.

SOMETIMES HE COMES IN THE CLOUDS (Steven Curtis Chapman) - A heard this song at a memorial service and it reminds me of the Lord's second coming and even how He's still with us today.

MOVE IN ME (Michael W. Smith) - So what do you do when peopel tell you that God does not exist? This is Smitty's answer to those people. Very sweet simple song.

A HEART LIKE MINE (Bryan Duncan) - How much does God love us? A beautiful song sung by a man with powerful vocals!

SHINE ON US (Phillips, Craig & Dean) - What a great way to end the album. Asking for God to shed his light of truth and healing on us. Great vocal blends of harmony. Gorgeous!

By this album. I fell in love the very first moment I heard it. You will too.

I Love this CD - but be careful before you order!.......2002-08-24

I love the music on this CD. It gets down to the "nitty-gritty" of the Christian life -- surrender, dedication, revival-- and yet its melodies are soothing and quite enjoyable. HOWEVER, BE CAREFUL BEFORE YOU ORDER THIS. There is another CD under the same name, but is called "My Utmost for His Highest: The Covenant." If there's any way to contact a seller BEFORE you buy, you might want to do that to make sure that the non-Covenant title is the one they're selling. Although I ordered this item properly, and the seller advertised that this is what he was selling, I was sent "The Covenant" version, and was extremely disappointed, because it wasn't at all what I ordered. I'm still working through the details, hoping to be able to exchange it, but I might be stuck. So, just a word to the wise . . .

A good CD, but nothing exceptional.......2001-09-02

With staple artists to the Christian music genre such as Michael W Smith, Amy Grant and 4Him, this could have been a very good compilation. Unfortunately, there are definately stronger tracks by all of these artists, and even though the CD was created to go along with the book, this is only a hint of what it could have been. A great example of a good compilation is any of the WOW series of CDs. If you are very devoted, or really enjoyed the book, get this CD. If not, then the WOW series are better. Either way, this is still a relatively good CD that you can definately listen to.

Great CD Anywhere, in the car, at work, at play, &while resting.......2007-02-19

HI: I just bought this CD and I really like it. It is a great CD for anytime. The songs are great and not old churchy. I like listening to this Cd during stressful periods in my days, and when I am exercising.
The songs are wonderfully written and the vocals to match them. The words really make you think about your soul and your choices in life.
I wish there were more songs on this CD. I want to hear the next compilation for MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST. I also bought the other CD for My Utmost for his highest and I really enjoyed both.

An overlooked masterpiece........2001-03-22

This CD was released 8 months after the huge success of the first My Utmost for His Highest project. Unfortunately, it failed to sell in the same numbers as the first. I will admit that at first, I didn't like it as much as the first. But it has grown on me, and now I like it more.

In my mind, one of the reasons it failed to sell in the same numbers as the first is that it doesn't have the name recognition the first did. While the first had Amy Grant, 4Him, Point of Grace, etc., this one has Anointed, Clay Crosse, Greg Long, and Lisa Bevill, among others. Michael W. Smith does make a return visit for two songs, the incredible SOMEDAY (SET THE CHILDREN FREE) and a recording with Anointed of JOYFUL, JOYFUL that's similar to Crown Him with Many Crowns from I'll Lead You Home.

Still, the reason this CD is so powerful is because of the overall theme and message of the songs. The idea was to release a collection around God's covenant with us and our response to it. When I really sat down and listened to the CD with that in mind, I was blown away. Some of the lyrics include: "I have made a promise/And so it will be...I belong to you/And you to Me." "I say it's a promise/A covenant, a destiny/I will come to set My children free." Susan Ashton contributes a beautiful version of Psalm 121 taken almost word for word from the Revised Standard Version of the Bible. By the time I reach the response to God, I find it easy to be praying "I promise all of my ways" and can claim the promise that "We will follow You, knowing You'll lead us through." The two instrumental songs, incorporating melodies from the other songs, add to the reflective mood.

This CD belongs in every Christian home. It is a great reminder of Who is ultimately in control of our lives and our world, and what He has promised to those who believe in Him.

I loved this CD as much as the first one. If you have read Oswald Chamber's book, heard the first CD or are looking for an inspirational religious CD with music to please every taste, you have to buy this CD!

A perfect sequal to "My Utmost For His Highest". You truly feel the Spirit! A wonderful mix of todays top gospel musicians. Contemporary mixed with traditional. Make sure you read the excerpts on the inside cover!

The technical mixing of the CD is top quality! We have a surround sound home theater system, and you can hear every instrument and voice distinctly. The separation is superb! The music is annointed and Jesus' presence enters as you praise Him and listen to this music. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone that wants to enter into God's presence.

Most cherished CD.......2004-01-15

This is one the most cherished CDs I own. No matter if I'm angry, anxious, scared, whatever my state of mind...when I pop this CD in the player, I am drawn into the presence of God. I haven't run across another CD that is so full of authentic and sacred music. There is no track on this CD that fails to move me to a place where God and I are alone. Wonderful purchase.

Reflective and Soothing Music.......2000-08-25

This recording always relaxes me. I can put it on and find that my mind wanders with it...thinking about God and coming back to the present then drifting back to God again. The music has a soothing presence that draws my spirit to the Lord. Also, I have never grown sick of listening to this collection. The songs tend to blend together, and then the next thing I know the music is over and I am sad to see the songs end.

I would definitely recommend this as a welcome addition to anyone's devotional music collection. But if you do get this recording, don't expect to be overwhelmed by the songs on the first listening. They are gentle songs that grow on you after some quiet reflection and time.

The best prayer CD.......2000-08-22

This is the best CD for praying and having a quiet time. This helps me keep focusing on His words, and to maintain close retionship with Him.

Heard the song Come, Holy Spirit one night on the radio. Have never heard it sung with such feeling, and want to have a copy of this CD.

I have the cassett and have played it for a year off and on going to work in the morning. It sets the tone for my whole day and helps me to focous on the Lord. My new truck only has a CD so the first thing I have to do is replace the cassett. The music and words will touch your heart!

Buy the (cheaper) 2CD set instead.......2005-05-11

The one entitled "The Steve Camp Collection" (ASIN B000002UEM) contains 2 CDs at a price roughly half the cost used of this one. The only song on this one that's NOT on the double disc set is "Forgive Me, Forgive You". So unless that's your absolute favourite Camp tune ever, buying this is needless.

My church did this Worship Musical about five years ago and I was fortunate to be a part of the choir. People clamored for a spot in the choir and we finished up with about a hundred singers and orchestra members. This is how great the music is..! I am so glad that this music has come into my life.

My church performed this musical 5 years ago, and I absolutely loved it! I kept the listening tape, and played it often. My mom loved it, too, so I gave her the tape. It had been played so much that it finally wore out two months ago. Finding the listening CD has been difficult, but we finally did. My mom and I both bought it. It's so wonderful to have this uplifting, encouraging music on CD. Love, love, love it!
