On The North Side Of The Tree

Editorial Reviews
San Francisco Chronicle, Sunday, September 19, 1999, James Sullivan
Moss Brothers Get Early Start Ten-year-old violinist Reuben Moss goes to a private music school in Berkeley. At home, he plays electric guitar. He has equal admiration for classical music and rock 'n' roll. And he's well aware that's not typical for most kids his age....Reuben and his drumming brother Evan, 13, are doing their part to elevate rock music to respectability. The Moss Brothers' first CD, ``On the North Side of the Tree,'' is just out, available on their Web site and in selected Bay Area stores.... The Piedmont siblings are already attracting plenty of attention. They played at Jerry Brown's mayoral inauguration, and Fender Guitars has expressed interest in sponsoring Reuben. The Moss Brothers' song ``Football All the Way'' is being considered as the theme song for the Steve Young Report on KFOG (104.5-FM).... Songs such as ``Guitar & Drums'' and the dish-washing ode ``Hot Water'' sound uncannily like the Meat Puppets, another band built around brothers (Cris and Curt Kirkwood)....

About the Artist
Reuben Moss, age ten, was composing as a pre-schooler and began studying guitar at age four. He made his debut at age five, performing his song "I Live In France" at an open mike night at Freight and Salvage coffee house in Berkeley. He can't remember a time when he wasn't a guitarist. "I got started when I was two years old. I'd always been playing air guitar. I got my first guitar when I was four and I took some lessons, and I've been playing ever since. When I was young, like 3 to 5, I really... read more

Album Description
Today's leading pop groups are mostly five-member boy bands and solo crooners whose music, critics complain, is contrived and formulaic. If anyone is bucking this trend, it's The Moss Brothers of Piedmont, California. At ages ten and thirteen, respectively, Reuben and Evan are already so musically accomplished, their original material so well-conceived, that the brothers are sure to attract fans of not just their own age but years older, too. With a mature sound that is full of catchy hooks, melodic sophistication, and thoughtful, often witty lyrics, The Moss Brothers can be described as a little Buddy Holly meets a little Tom Petty meets a two-man Green Day. This is feel-good music with an edge. Instead of relying on drum machines, backup singers, or smoke-and-mirrors recording techniques, The Moss Brothers have made their debut CD, On The North Side Of The Tree, on raw talent. Its eight original songs and two classic blues cover tunes are upbeat and complex, lending the album a sound more like that of a four-piece band than like that of one fifth-grader and one eighth-grader. There are other young groups out there, but The Moss Brothers demonstrate talent, maturity, and musical sensitivity toward each other that goes way beyond their years.

1 out of 5 stars Take them serious? Not!.......2002-09-17

These guys are music wimps. It's hard to imagine how anyone takes them serious or even listens to this garbage. I'd rather swallow live weasels than hear any of this on any kind of repeated basis. Save your money, Kenny G rocks harder than these chumps.

1 out of 5 stars This sucks.......2000-10-17

I don't understand how these kids are getting such great reveiws. The kid can't sing and the songs all sound the same. This is a horrible CD and a waste of time and money.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2000-09-21

As soon as you listen to it all the way to the end, I was thinkin, wow! This music is a lot better than most music out there. While at first look you're thinkin, ok this has been done before. its called, Hanson. O but you'd be very wrong. While Hanson said the words mmmbopp a lot, the Moss Brothers write their own, very original and creative lyrics and music, and at their instruments, they're much more talented than most bands (like I said earlier). So if you're looking for an interesting CD, with incredible music and great lyrics, then buy this now. If you want to buy the talentless and reptitiveness of BSB or something, then dont

5 out of 5 stars Rock On, Moss!.......2000-08-25

The Moss Brothers are Great! I personally know their Family. Reuben is a great guy as is Evan. They are both really nice I especially enjoy their music. But the best part is, every one of their songs has a special meaning to their family. This is a great CD and I hope you buy it and help suport the Moss Brothers!

5 out of 5 stars Curve It Around!.......2000-08-04
