Past the Edges

He came out of nowhere two years ago with his Deep Enough to Dream debut, garnering six Dove Award nominations and widespread accolades for his songwriting. Now Chris Rice is back with a sophomore effort nothing short of brilliant. It is ironic that Rice won the 1999 Dove Award for best male vocalist when best songwriter might have been more appropriate. The songs drive Past the Edges; Rice's introspective, poetic genius becomes more apparent with each release. "The Power of a Moment" is probably the catchiest track here, while "Smellin' Coffee," with its piano and horns, may remind some of early Chicago. Producer Monroe Jones masterfully keeps the balance throughout, particularly on "Wind and Spirit," where Rice's sensible vocals and melodic acoustic guitars blend tastefully with a soaring string section. --Michael Lyttle

Best Morning CD EVER........2003-03-08
I love to put this CD in every morning. If you've never heard Chris Rice before, he sounds James Taylor-ish. His songs energize me and make me celebrate all that God has done while I've been sleeping. WAKE UP, Smell the coffee. Enjoy God's great creation! Live, Laugh, Love, listen to Chris Rice. :)
The best Christian CD I've ever heard........2002-10-03
I have to admit that I'm not a big fan of most Contemporary Christian Music. Much of it barely qualifies as "Christian", or as "Music" for that matter. But then there's Chris Rice. His songs are alternately beautiful, poignant, and playful, and his lyrics are so honest, and so true to the Christian experience. He struggles with sin and has questions about God, but underlying it all is this deep, solid faith. The nature of his relationship with Christ is simply inspiring. "Past the Edges" is his best CD-- it changed my life-- but his other albums are great too.
Awesome CD.......2002-07-16
I've listened to this CD at least 1000 times. Chris Rice is an incredibly talented songwritter both where the melody and lyric is concerned.
Also, two minutes after track 10 is a "hidden" song you have to listen to.
My favorite trac is number 10 "Missing You"--to me it speaks of the coming of the Lord for His Church.

Halalujah.......2006-03-26
I was driving down the road the other day thinking about being able to laugh with God. Joy so uncontainable that it burst out into laughter ya know? A time for every purpose under Heaven. Well then I heard "The Cartoon Song" for the first time. And to be able to feel that much joy at a random time was awesome. I got online and found this CD. I enjoy Chris Rice's songs so I look forward to adding this CD to my collection.
Cartoon IS on this album, you just have to wait for it.......2006-02-23
I LOVE Smelling Coffee. I put my CD player on Repeat and listen to this song over and over. It is uplifting and encouraging. The other songs are good as well. The words are so honest and transparent. If you like fun peaceful music that gets your heart and mind thinking, you will like this. The cartoon song IS on this CD even though it isn't listed on the cover. If you let the CD play after the last song, the cartoon song starts about 5 minutes after the last song. You just have to learn a lesson in patience (one of God's favorite lessons) and wait for it.
Timeless.......2005-06-04
"Past the Edges" is a good effort by Chris Rice. His gentle voice is expressive & his songwriting skills are unique. "Wind & Spirit" is a perky tune with an orchestral build, "From the corners of creation comes the Father's holy breath ridin' on a storm with tender fierceness, stirring my soul to holiness." "Thirsty" is a lovely slow melody that builds like a classic anthem about finding the water that quenches all thirst. 6 minutes & 20 seconds into band 10 comes the hidden track "Cartoons" about how cartoons might be different with a Christian experience, "Fred & Wilma Flintstone singing Hallelujah!" It's very funny! My favorite track on the CD is the rocking opener that both sets your toe to tapping and puts a smile on your face, "Here comes Your mercy streamin' in with the morning light, my heart is racing waking up to Your smile." "Live By Faith" is also an exquisite and lovely song. Chris Rice is one of the best of our musicians to combine the spiritual and the musical. This set was released in 1998, but encountering the love of God is timeless! Enjoy!
Honest Lyrics.......2002-07-30
Chris Rice's second CD is exactly what his fans wanted. It's filled with the same honest lyrics and folk pop music that made his first CD such a big success.
The project opens with "Smelling Coffee," a fun song about how each day is a fresh start. It then delves into a more series tone with "Naive." In it, he struggles with understanding God's timing and ways. "Big Enough" is a companion song as he asks more questions of God, who is big enough to handle them and help us with them. Even with these struggles, he ultimate decides to "Live by Faith" in a cool cover of a song he wrote that was originally recorded by Kim Boyce.
The second half of the CD delves into a lighter more worshipful mood. "One of Those Days" is a celebration of the times when God feels like he's right beside us. "Wind and Spirit" is about God stirring in our lives, while "Thirsty" is a cry for the Living Water.
By far, however, my favorite song on this disc is the last official song, "Missin' You." In it, Chris passionately captures the desire of a Christian to reach his final home, Heaven. Lyrically and musically, it's one of the best songs he's ever released.
Chris Rice doesn't beat around the bush about the struggles of life, but that's what I find refreshing. Still, ultimately, he returns to his faith in God and rests in Him. My only real complaint is "Cartoons." It's a fun song, but detracts from the other songs' overall effect and doesn't hold up as well to repeated listening. Still, I seem to be in the minority on this, and my skip button makes it a non-issue anyway.
I highly recommend this and Chris's other CD's to any fans of Adult Contemporary Christian Music.

I only wanted this CD for one song that I was told was on this CD and it wasn't. I wanted Cartoons and was very dissapointed when it wasn't on the CD
