For better or worse, Andrew Lloyd Webber's adaptation of Gaston Leroux's gothic horror/romance novel has done for stage musicals what Spielberg's Jaws did for fish stories, with worldwide sales of its original cast album approaching 25 million. While director Joel Schumacher's film turns on his typically ambitious visual verve, its new film soundtrack recording has been paradoxically focused in scope, yet beefed up dynamically via the brawny presence of a hundred piece orchestra and The London Boys Choir. This single disc version showcases all of Phantom's key songs (a deluxe, double-disc edition is also available), with Gerard Butler imparting a welcome, youthful sensuality to his Phantom, making a fine foil for Emmy Rossum's ever-conflicted Christine. Original show orchestrator David Cullen has fashioned compelling new contemporary arrangements to frame Webber's songs -- which now conclude with the lilting, upbeat new ballad he wrote for the film, "Learn to Be Lonely," sung by Minnie Driver. --Jerry McCulley

The Phantom of the Opera is my favorie musical of all time, simply put. The movie is absolutely incredible, so I just had to have the soundtrack. Though this one-disc version leaves out many excellent pieces, it still has the bulk of the music.
First of all, let me just say that Emmy Rossum (Christine) sounds MUCH more elegant and true than Sarah Brightman (who overpronounces to the point of absurdity) in the classic London Cast recording of the musical.
Second of all, Gerard Butler may not be as operatic as Michael Crawford, but he is a much better actor, and the simple sound of his voice IS the Phantom. "Music of the Night" is so beautiful when he sings it, unlike Michael Crawford's mockery of the piece as he tries to sing those bass notes and just ends up mushing it all together into a horrible, overpronounced, over-legato MESS!
Now, Patrick Wilson! He has such a wonderful voice it just makes me faint! Wow! He is, I swear, the greatest tenor alive. Anyone who criticizes his beautiful performance of Raoul is simply insane.
This soundtrack has some utterly perfect music, such as
1. Gerard's incredible performance of "Music of the Night." He sings so beautifully at the end with that last "night" that one can scarcely believe it.
2. "Down Once More," the final scene of the movie can produce tears even without images on a screen. Hearing the three characters' voices together is sheer perfection!
3. "All I Ask of You" has wonderful emotion on all fronts, and Rossum and Wilson blend together into pure love. Bravo! Brava! Bravi!
4. "All I Ask of You (Reprise)"... It is so truly heartbreaking that I can never stop crying. "You will curse the day you did not do... all that the Phantom asked of you!" It has such a blend of emotion that one can only sit and listen, in bliss and awe.
This soundtrack, though missing some songs (get the two-disc set if you want them all), is basically perfect. I will love this music and these wonderful singers forever.

Smothered by the indulgence of his rock star ranking, Jack White steps into the eccentricities of the supergroup, and at first glance, this seems to be a band where White's imposing presence could overshadow the rest. Not the case with these Raconteurs. Teaming with fellow Detroit songwriter Brendan Benson and Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler, the rhythm section from Cincinnati band the Greenhornes, White exhales a bit, deferring enough to his mates to make Broken Boy Soldiers play like a team effort. Following the Benson blueprint, "Steady as She Goes," which opens as a slice of 1960's radio pop, the record steers away from pigeonholing the rest of the way. White's in a Middle Eastern mood for the title track as he pulls off a wicked Robert Plant howl, while Lawrence and Keeler excel on the chorus-strong "Intimate Secretary" and the optimistic acoustic rocker "Yellow Sun." Like so many all-star bands before them, The Raconteurs could be one and done. But don't place the blame on this fertile and genuine debut. --Scott Holter

Album Description

The Raconteurs are a new band made up of old friends, consisting of Jack Lawrence (bass), Patrick Keeler (drums), Brendan Benson (guitars, vocals, keys) and Jack White(guitars, vocals, keys). The seed was sewn in an attic in the middle of a hot summer when friends Jack White and Brendan Benson got together and wrote a song that truly inspired them. This song was "Steady, As She Goes" and the inspiration led to the creation of a full band with the addition of Lawrence and Keeler. While each of these four individuals have had successful careers with their own bands, the culmination of all of their talents is what truly makes The Raconteurs a force to be reckoned with.

Indie Rock's answer to a "Supergroup". Every track on the disc should be on the radio. The most underrated and unrecognized band of the year. The band has great chemistry and passion for what they do. Incredible Live act. If you love good music, buy this NOW!

I love artists who can make a new sound from old influences, and the Raconteurs deliver on this albumn. Some of the guitar work sounds like it's straight out of the sixties, yet the songs sit comfortably among other contemporary alt-rock projects. Check this one out.

I'd heard a song or two on the radio while traveling and thought I'd give the cd a go. Fabulous! Truly these musicians enjoy what they do and each others company. Only through genuine collaboration could such a creation happen. They had me from the first song to the last. The style is definately not that of amateurs. Well produced but not to the point that it sounds plastic. In fact one thing I love the most is how they have retained a slight raw edge that was quite refreshing. I hear influences of the Beatles, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin but with completely fresh insight and I only hope they keep it up so I can add more to my music collection!
In my opinion, not just one or two songs but, all of them are good!

Incredible. I chose this CD at random as "raconteur" is a favorite word. Finding that Jack White was connected made me quite curious. Could this group of musician friends sell themselves as the title they chose for their group? I've played several of these tracks for friends of all ages. There's something for everyone. There's sort of a nostalgic feel to many of the tracks. Not a single track disappoints. Rather each track brings something unique to this collection. I hope we haven't heard the last from these talented Raconteurs!

Big news on the Harry Potter musical front: After scoring the first three installments in the series, John Williams has been replaced by Patrick Doyle. Still, Williams never feels far away. His main theme pops up here and there, and a track like "Voldemort," which eloquently illustrates the soul of a blacker-than-black wizard with thunderous cymbal crashes, shrieking horns, tumultuous strings, and a stately finish, firmly belongs in the Williams mode. Overall, Doyle acquits himself well. He can do light when needed ("The Quidditch World Cup," which starts out like some kind of jig), but mostly he's required to be ominous ("The Quidditch World Cup," which ends in martial war chants). Among the highlights are the aforementioned "Voldemort," but also the frantic, overpowering "The Dark Mark." Note that the CD concludes on a jarringly different note with three songs by the Weird Sisters, the group that performs at Hogwarts' Yule Ball. Led by Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker, the ad hoc band also includes members of Radiohead and Cocker's side project Relaxed Muscle. "Do the Hippogriff" is a fast-paced rocker that somehow comes across like a grungy hybrid of Billy Idol's "White Wedding" and "Dancing with Myself." The other two songs--"This Is the Night" and "Magic Works"--are less obvious, and much better. Still, the contrast between these tracks and the instrumental score that precedes them may not be to everybody's taste. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

As a collector of movie soundtracks, it was unthinkable not to get this fourth album of the Harry Potter series. After reading the mixed reviews, I was apprehensive as to whether it would sit on my shelf collecting dust or get a good workout in the CD player.

I own all four albums, and as avid a fan as I am of John Williams, I would have to say "The Goblet of Fire" rates up there with "The Philosopher's Stone" (which really did set the standard for the rest of the following albums). In fact, I would have to say that "The Goblet of Fire" is my favourite. The music is quite simply beautiful and atmospheric. Standouts are "Harry In Winter" (this particular track I can't help but have on repeat mode in the car), "Death of Cedric" and "Foreign Visitors Arrive". "The Quidditch Cup" makes me want to catch the next plane to Ireland! And call me old-fashioned, but "Neville's Waltz" and "Potter Waltz" are pleasant and lovely to the ear.

As for the rock songs at the end, I usually bypass them. Some complain about the jarring disconnect between the orchestral aspect of the soundtrack and the loud rock of the end - well, at least they're at the end and not in the middle! And let's face it. How many people would have grumbled that those songs that featured at the Winter Ball were left out?

I've always loved the work of Patrick Doyle (e.g. "Sense and Sensibility" and "Much Ado About Nothing"), and this soundtrack is no exception. He didn't 'fill' John Williams' shoes on this score. He pretty much created a new pair. Harry's story and personality have shifted on. It would be remiss of us to think the music wouldn't evolve as well.

So has this soundtrack lost that feeling of magic? I would have to say a resounding 'no'. It's certainly a lot more listener-friendly than "Chamber of Secrets"!

1 out of 5 stars The Magic is Gone.......2007-05-10

John Williams is not simply a hard act to follow...he's THE hard act to follow. Nonetheless this score falls far short. There was once magic in the land of Hogwarts.. themes were stated boldly and elevated the story, flurries of woodwinds nurtured scenes of flight. Doyle's score does dare to quote William's melodies at 3 points in this score. They are harmonized poorly and treated even worse. The rest of the score just goes downhill from here. He does introduce his own new "themes." These are presented as boring quarter note string lines that you can't seem to remember 10 seconds after you hear them. The rest of the scoreat it's best is a prime example of dated cliches. The dialogue scenes are overly sappy and the action scenes become hokey in an almost silent film music stlye. Watch the graveyard scene again and laugh, check out the dance scene where characters get lifted in the air as simple scales comically mirror their moves. The most common reaction to the music after viewing the film is "I don't really remember it as being good or bad." If you go back and watch it again I think you story will change. The magic is gone.

One of the joys for me of the John Williams "Harry Potter" scores are the lush, melodic leitmotifs. On "The Chamber of Secrets" album alone there are wonderful themes for Fawkes, Dobby and Gilderoy Lockhart, not to mention Colin, Hedwig and The Flying Car. They're charming, evocative pieces that stand alone apart from the moodier, more percussive tracks composed to accompany the actual movie. Unfortunately, there's nothing that even comes close to these in Doyle's "Goblet of Fire" score. There's certainly drama ("The Maze") and pathos ("Death of Cedric"), but nothing thematic that you'd want to hear over and over again. And what themes there are ("Neville's Waltz" for instance) I find woefully banal. (And don't get me started on the acid rock songs that close the album.) So this is a true movie score in the sense that it's pretty much all background music; it certainly creates atmosphere and serves as a reminder of the film's superlative visuals. But what works well in the theater doesn't translate very well for the home audio listener.

This album is a must for an Harry Potter fan, both young and old, from the mild to the extreme. I also recommend the entire collection of soundtracks to the movies. Each one is full of calm, soothing melodies we have come to enjoy from Harry Potter.

I'm in love with this cd - it has every part of the movie on it as well as the end theme (Learn to be Lonely). Gerard has an amazing voice, and the quality is fantastic. The orchestra is incredible, too. If you're the type that liked the play or the movie and are always humming the songs to yourself, this is a great cd for you to buy.

I like this prodduct, it is essential the same as 'listening' to the movie using only a CD player. Ninety-nine percent (99%) of the sound of the movie was preserved. However, this deluxe motion picture soundtrack product is played better on a computer than on a CD player. A computer always gives a smooth transition between tracks, whereas, a CD player might not. For exmaple, in the transition between the tracks of 'Wandering Child' and 'Swordfight', Raoul was trying to stop Christine from responding to Phantom's call, Raoul screamed: "...this man this thing is not your father." On the computer, you will hear the whole sentence, whereas on the CD player, you only hear: "...this man this thing" and then it jumps to the next track, so the words 'is not your father' were being cut off. Also, there is an abrupt jump from 'Chandelier crack' to 'Down Once More'. The transition is just not smooth.

I think the soundtrack editor could avoid this problem by choosing a better point to end and start a track. By far the worst editing place was that the song of 'Point of No Return' was cut right in the middle of the song.

Since I also have the regular CD soundtrack (in addition to the deluxe soundtrack from the original motion picture), I can compare these two products side by side. The sound quality of the regular CD soundtrack is noticeably better, clearer, and no background noise.

This story and its beautiful music take me away to another place and time...it sweeps me up into what I refer to as a state of "Gerryapnea" because I can hardly breathe when the Phantom is on camera...all this and he can sing beautifully too!! It doesn't get any better than this....
Don't think for a minute that you have to be under 50 years old in order to appreciate this man...he is definitely awesome and just getting started in his acting career...we definitely have to watch out for Gerry Butler.

I went to see the film because I'm a big Broadway show person and I got to see the Phantom performed on the London stage while stationed in England with my husband, who was active duty Air Force at the time. I liked the movie in a different way than the stage version. I listen to the soundtrack when I'm on a long car trip - either in my car's system or my personal CD player. Gerard Butler IS wonderful as the Phantom and has a wonderful rich voice for the music.

Hayley Westenra's new album Odyssey was always going to be a different proposition to Pure, the record-breaking 2003 collection which marked her international debut. A lot has happened to the young New Zealander over the past two or three years--and those changes are clearly reflected by a record which encapsulates her growth from a budding teenage prodigy into a mature young woman.

Now, at 18, Hayley is ready to show the world how much she has grown up, both as an artist and as an individual. Fans of Pure will be pleasantly surprised by her new album. Her wonderful voice retains its crystal-clear purity, but Westenra's singing is now richer and more rounded than before. Touring the world and singing in some of its greatest concert venues, such as the Sydney Opera House, Royal Albert Hall, and Carnegie Hall, has worked wonders for her confidence. Suitably emboldened, she has embraced an even wider range of musical styles including classical, hymns, folk and pop.

"I was happy with Pure at the time, but I've moved on so much," says Hayley. "It's really exciting to have something new out there for people to listen to. I wanted to make a record that represented me as a person. And I think I've improved as a vocalist."

Variety is certainly one of the keywords with Hayley's new album. When she first entered a recording studio in New Zealand as a 12-year-old, Westenra restricted herself to classical pieces and show tunes. Now, in addition to impressive takes on classical works, Hayley uses her new album to perform an inspired cover of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" and has arranged and written much of the material. "I like to push myself, and I'm now confident enough to try different things. I have been much more involved behind the scenes with this album--I wanted to put my individual stamp on each song."

With her career stretching out promisingly before her, Hayley is also keen to continue experimenting. She is still primarily a classical crossover artist but she also wants to keep broadening those musical horizons. Three years after her international debut CD, Hayley Westenra is still pure: she exudes pure quality and she remains pure class--but her musical journey continues with her new album Odyssey.

Hayley Westenra's Odyssey is a very beautiful CD. If you switch on your walkman and listen to the CD's tracks non-stop, you'll soon feel like you're flying in Heaven. It's very soothing and heavenly. It calms you down, without causing you to feel lonely or sad because you're listening to it in solitary, like other vocal or classical songs do sometimes.

I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested. Quanta Qualia and Ave Maria are my most favourite tracks. Quanta Qualia is pure magic! I really feel as if I'm flying in Heaven when I listen to it.

the selections were tasteful and varied. the singer has a very good pop singer voice. i would have liked some voice variation between songs. all were sung in exactly the same style. good singing but without tonal variation the disk tends to be bland. i hope that as she gets more exposure she will vary her voice to make the songs stand out individually instead of letting them blend into one song on the disc. i would rate this 5 stars except for that major fault.

Not only has Hayley Westenra's voice remained "pure", but her good sense and sensibilty has stayed intact when so many similar young performers have gone over the deep end with extreme behavior and disreputable remarks. On this CD Miss Westernra covers a number of songs in her own special style, such as excellent versions of "Prayer", "May It Be" and "Both Sides Now". I hope to hear her renditions of more such tunes, old and new. I would like to hear her sing songs like "Yesterday", "I Still Believe in Love" and All I Know. She has a way with her soaring vocals that never lets the listener down.

All hail the riff king! The Black Keys' guitarist/singer Dan Auerbach has the meanest way with a hook since Jimmy Page. He adds to his arsenal on the band's fourth full-length release, on which each track pounds its way into your skull with fuzzy, swampy fury. I was introduced to the Black Keys a year or so before they hit the mainstream. I was blown away by the amount of different sounds that can come from just one guy on a guitar and one guy on drums. If you don't believe what you're hearing, see them live. It is definitely worth it. This is an excellent album and I highly recommend having is in your cd library.

I am 32 with somewhat young parents. So I grew up with my parents blaring Journey, Led Zepplin, Steve Miller Band, and Cat Stevens. I know what good rock is and these guys are IT.

Hearing all the greats growing up, I recognize many of their styles in the Black Keys music and none of it comes off as a cheap copy-cat sound like so many bands tend to. These two guys have talent of their own and they play music that just plain sounds good.

It's the kind of music you want to hear when you go out drinking beer with the guys or when you're driving in your car, or when you want to go out and hear a damn good live show.

I can't seem to take this CD out of rotation - it's really damn good!

Standing at 6 feet 4" tall with a shock of bright red hair, 23 year old Patrick Wolf is something of a statement even before he opens his mouth. His two albums to date--2003's Lycanthropy and 2005's Wind in the Wires--have showed him to be more than a pretty face, however, with songs that strike an attractive balance between the imaginative and the indulgent. In my never ending search for what is good out there and the possible surpirse of finding a really tasty talent (no, I am not going to eat it, just and expression!)I keep looking for highly rated albums for each year and I use AMG, Metacritic (which I do like a lot), Rolling Stone, Spin whatever is available and that so far I respect their opinions. Patrick Wolf I found in Rolling Stone "artists to watch for" and since I became intrigued I bought "The Magic Position". Overall, I fairly assigned 4 stars to the CD. Since my collection as of late is growing at a rapid rate (blame that to musical boredom and a need to listen more and new acts)I only have heard this album 1 time but there are enough good sounds to call it a "keeper". Some of the instrumentation is deceptively appealing and quite melodic. From his looks on the cover I did not know how the waters run with Patrick Wolf but in the end his music did all the talking and I enjoyed it. There were a couple of intimate songs that were very very nice. Obviously Patrick Wolf listens to his own "drummer" and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. A Viable Performer and who knows? When the rotation includes this album again might be twice as enjoyable, after all the very best grows after two or three listens. 4 Stars for "The Magic Position".

Patrick Wolf dazzles with his third and latest album, "The Magic Position," a brighter, bolder work than his previous, but no less extraordinary, "Wind in the Wires." With remarkable breadth and depth, he focuses on various states and stages of relationships, from the ebullient title song to the mournful "Bluebells" to the striking "Accident & Emergency," the light "Let's Get Lost" and the reverential "The Stars." It all kicks off with "Overture's" mounting pulse and alluring message to "open up now" and "let the light in."

The music ranges from symphonic to spare, but always seems multi-layered and rich. Wolf's lyrics are stirring, descriptive and drenched in wisdom and insight.

Wolf is truly in a class by himself. As a singer-songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist, producer, performer and visual artist, he possesses an extraordinary talent, vision and appeal--all of which are realized on this amazing album.

Along with Feist's The Reminder and Mika's Life in Cartoon Motion, Patrick Wolf's 3rd outing The Magic Position is nothing short of being charismatic. The album is a whimsical mix of electro-pop, dance, rock and classical music. As an young artiste who single-handedly plays over 40 instruments, his music is immediately varied and arresting.

The opener Overture begins with some serious deep beats before breaking into a rock song. The title track is a boisterous child-like track that brings with it a cheerful disposition. Accidents and Emergency contains an irresistible hook consisting of horns and sirens. Magpie perfectly demonstrates his classical leanings. His deep baritone voice is a stark contrast to his flamboyantly loud image on the album art.

With The Magic Position, Wolf shakes off the dark imagery of his previous releases and emerges with greater faith and conviction. One of the year's best! (A+)

I admit it openly -- after hearing that Patrick Wolf was going poppy, I was prepared to hate "The Magic Position." I really was.

But I can't. Instead, his third album managed to sweep me away with his colourful chamberpop, and ever-changing palette of musical sounds. In fact, he masters most varieties of pop -- bluesy, peppy, soothing strings, and even some electropop -- and weave them into some accomplished melodies.

It opens with some taut drums, and a slowly rising violin leads in a sweep of strings, guitar and electronica. Wolf croons over it, "It's wonderful what a smile can hide/If the teeth shine bright and it's nice and wide/It's so magical all you can keep inside/And if you bury it deep no one can find a thing, no..." He follows it with the xylophone-churchbell-violinpop of the title song, a bouncy love song that is so infectious and joyful, it deserves to be on the radio.

But having hooked listeners with those two songs, he sallies out into all sorts of music -- dark electropop with horns, bluesy ballads, passionate piano pop, happy robot dance music, and a strong piano-strings ballad, "Magpie," a duet with the smoky-voiced Marianne Faithfull. And the album ends as it began -- with a twinkly, joyous little song, and a bittersweet string outro.

If I had to compare Patrick Wolf in this album, it would be to call him a male version of Feist -- talented vocalist and songwriter, musically versatile, and poppy without being a slave to the MTV sound. "The Magic Position" shows that off beautifully, albeit with a few dark spots that could have been left out.

The music is one of those rare blends of fun catchiness and clever musicianship -- mostly because Wolf crams it with adept musicianship. Aside from the basic guitar, he weaves in instruments like the weeping violin, accordion, ukelele, piano, drums and harp, as well as stuff like the colorful blips from an autoharp, horns, tinkly little bells, and the kitchen sink.

The results can be lushly effusive pop, sweeping ballads, or a spare ballad woven from flickers of piano and strings. It could have used a tiny bit of trimming, though -- "Kiss" sounds like a violin tuneup, and "Secret Garden" is an awkward mishmash of various sounds. However, they're the only real weak spots on this album.

Wolf's voice is as pleasant as his music -- smooth, strong, and able to convey fun and joy as easily as yearning and love. And his songs are pretty passionate stuff, whether it's the childlike joy of seeing the stars ("Mama, I saw the stars tonight/Orion, the plow, are burning bright"), or a painful confession to a lover ("And that's why, love, you shouldn't stay/Still you will and love me...").

Patrick Wolf goes pop in "Magic Position," but doesn't sacrifice any of his talents. A few songs could have been snipped, but you can forget about those in the shadow of his lovely ballads and dancy pop tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-05-08

Mr. Wolf has created a pop gem with this latest album. The combination of familiar forms with abstract sound create a beautiful record and one that will last longer than this year. I wont go into comparisons, because he sounds like no one else, but he pushes the boundaries of pop music like Bjork and it provides great results.

For those not interested in buying all of the soundtracks up to but not including HP 5 this is the way to go. But if you already have them all you will probably find this a wash. Take the tracks you have and arrange them as you like instead. The music is slightly better in places on the originals also.

I figured I'd comment on this CD even though it's not the same one exactly. I have the 2007 2 disc Music from the Harry Potter Films CDs and it's absolutely wonderful! I can't seem to find it anywhere on Amazon or on Silva Screen USA which is where it told me to go! They bring up this version I'm commenting on. The music for those tracks listed is the same as on my 2007 2 disc set so that's why I'm commenting. Brilliant music!

If you want to visualize the scenes from a movie, then this is the CD for you.This is one of the best movie score selections that I have had the pleasure to purchase in quite a while. From the beginning strands of Harry's World to the hauntingly beautiful, Harry in Winter, you will find yourself smiling and playing this CD over and over.

If you are looking for the best songs from Harry Potter movies, this CD is certainly an excellent choice. It's nice listening while driving and It's wonderful because you can listen the song that plays at the beginning of Harry's films over and over. This is a selection of all 4 movies.The best are "Hedwig's Theme", "Harry's Wondrous World", "Harry Potter and The Prisioner of Askaban - Suite" (You can "fly" with Harry while listening to "Buckbeak's Flight", feel Harry's fear and excitement). "Gilderoy Lockhart" is as funny as the character himself. "Harry in Winter" is marvellous.
It's good fun for sure!

The first review pretty much says it all, we just wanted to add our stars. My family and I are big Harry Potter fans and when it was time for my daughter's birthday, she requested a CD of Harry Potter music. There were several different pieces of which she was particularly fond of and this was the only CD that seemed to have nearly all of them. If there's one thing that she misses, it's the song "Something Wicked This Way Comes" from the POA film. Some of the melody is included in the POA suite but she really wanted to sing along.

This CD plays almost constantly in our car's CD system and the kids have a great time remembering what parts of the movies each piece is from. If you're looking for a Harry Potter CD that represents a bit of the best from each of the first four movies, this is it. The quality is outstanding as well.

Maybe they should have subtitled this album O Sister, Where Art Thou? Like the music from the Coen brothers' O Brother... movie, Songcatcher celebrates the emotional purity of mountain music, the acoustic balladry of the Appalachians--only this soundtrack features an all-female assemblage. Among the luminaries who shine the brightest: Rosanne Cash, who sets the tone with the album-opening "Fair and Tender Ladies"; Julie Miller, whose original "All My Tears" could pass as an old spiritual; Patty Loveless, who returns to her Kentucky roots with "Sounds of Loneliness"; and Gillian Welch, who leads an a cappella rendition of "Wind and Rain." Of the more familiar material, Emmylou Harris seems like she's coasting through the oft-revived "Barbara Allen" while Maria McKee sounds like she's singing for her life on "Wayfarin' Stranger." Yet the emphasis throughout is less on vocal virtuosity than on the stark simplicity of the songs, the album more impressive as an ensemble piece than a showcase for individual singers. --Don McLeese

This CD is absolutely fantastic. If anyone that enjoys mountain music will
certainly be crazy about it. And if you enjoy the CD, you will diffiently enjoy the DVD of the Songcatcher.

I should have paid more attention to the fine print. Mostly, this is not a soundtrack album. If I want to listen to all the songs as they are performed in the film, it seems I will have to get the DVD.

If you want to listen to the soundtrack performances of all the songs, then do not get this CD.

2 out of 5 stars Not very authentic, but a couple of good songs.......2007-01-17

This is an okay album if you are just looking for some listenable music, but in general the songs are overdone and not authentic-sounding (as in, they don't sound like mountain music but like something produced in some fancy studio). The exception is Iris DeMent's "Pretty Saro," which is an absolute gem and perhaps makes the album worth buying for just this one song!!! There are some good songs on here, but if you are looking for real Appalachian tunes, you'll not find much of that. Of course, many of the singers have fantastic voices, so that's one plus. There are a lot of really good authentic albums out there, but this isn't one of them.

My mother loves this CD so much I had to buy her another, one for her home & one in the car. My grandmother and aunt loved the music & movie too, and now my 9 year old is singing some of the quirky songs too. They highly recommend it for people that like the movie or this type of music.
