Sacred Harp Singing

The sound may not be up to contemporary standards on this disc, but historically it is perhaps the most important recording ever released of Sacred Harp singing. Part of the Library of Congress's Archive of Folk Culture series, this was the first recording to be created "in the raw," from an entire singing convention, replete with the heart-rending testimonials and the sound of singers getting into pitch. Folklorist Alan Lomax with George Pullen Jackson (at the time the foremost authority on Sacred Harp singing) recorded this fascinating document. Jackson authored several works and did extensive research on the often secular roots of Sacred Harp songs and delved into the lives of important original composers such as Billings, Read, and Ingalls. Since its release, Sacred Harp Singing has become a Rosetta stone of sorts for contemporary singers, who can compare their sound against that of the first authentic recording of a convention, the Alabama Sacred Harp Singing Convention of August 1942. --Mike McGonigal

Those sounds...a mirror for me.......2007-07-11
Dear Customers,
Thank you for sharing these wonderful arrangements. Cave of the Siddhars. Your music is instantly translated into soul messages. Musical soul massage. I don't know if it was my conscious mind or my unconscious mind but one of them surrendered to the music thanks to the constant didgeridoo in the background. My mind remembered a timeless aspect of itself. Turiya Nada's music that for the first few seconds had sounded extremely exotic fit into the mold of my being, as a result when I combined the music with asana practice I was able to deepen in the poses knowing that I was being "cushioned" by the call of Turiya Nada. The final "Arohara" invocations of the final tracks are perfect for the ending of savasana for me...and I believe for others too.
Thanks,
Nathaniel
that which is, that which we are.......2007-04-10
Cave of the Siddhars is an empowering journey bringing to light these ancient vibrations. Connect on a deep level with the inspiration of the perfected masters. Feel the immense wisdom these vibrations hold and begin to connect with thought as source in every breadth. If you are looking to align a deep spiritual experience this is the music for you as all walks of life.
Blessings
The Truth of Being.......2007-03-30
i remember listening to the cd before going to a healing movement class. the music and chants vibrate the truth of being. i was able to feel grounded with the ability to completely empty out into the silence of the divine. one of my challenges it to keep my feet here while embracing the inner light. this cd is very supportive of the healing journey and wherever i am in the moment. a beautiful merging of primal sounds and pure light. thank you for the gift of this cd!
Enter the magical/mystical realms :).......2007-03-12
Cave of the Siddhars CD entered my life back in May of 2006. Since then I have listened to it every day at least once. The blending of instruments and Nandhi's voice are amazing. Love it !! The resonance and high vibrational energies seem to awaken and stir ancient memories of knowingness within my being. At the same time bringing a sense of immense peace and joy. My cells dance to the vibrations. A CD that can be listened to anytime anywhere. Highly recommended. Dare to enter the magical/mystical realms of the Siddhar Masters and you won't be disappointed :)
A Powerful Journey into the Turiya Nada.......2007-01-11
The wonderful combination of sacred mantras and astonishing music creates a profound inner experience. It is a powerful and amazing journey into the realm of Turiya Nada. I experienced that I was able to reach into a whole new level of awareness by flowing with the sound/light waves.
I was initially curious about how the digeridoo and the many other instruments would work in combination with the mantras, and it works just perfectly - there is always a delicate balance between the music and the chanting. Pure enjoyment all the way...
'The Cave of the Siddhars' really manages to transport awareness to a profound inner state of light and grace. It is a true blessing!

If you had to choose just one Sacred Harp disc to own, this would be it. Volume 10 in the Southern Journey series may have more fuguing selections, but this is the best overall for its startling, briskly recorded stereo sound--no mean feat for a field recording from 1959! In addition to songs like "Cussetta," the always great "Weeping Mary," and "Montgomery," there are snippets of testimonials and confessions placed throughout. So you get to hear Harp singer Joyce Smith declare, "A lot of times a preacher will get up and preach and it don't seem like it has any effect on anybody. But you let a band of God's children get together and get to singing--people's gonna feel it." --Mike McGonigal
Customer Reviews:
Great introduction to an obscure folk music form.......2006-11-10
I have been teaching shape note singing to my community chorus. The CD helped them understand what the music is like and how to sing it.
overwhelming hymnody.......2005-04-05
After hearing a few sacred harp tunes on the anthology of American folk music, I knew I had to hear more and purchased southern journey volume 10. While that disc flabbergasted me with its fantastic sound and large number of fuging tunes, I purchased more sacred harp discs and must say that I prefer volume 9. There seems to be more variation between the songs included, and it just feels like the singers really hit their stride in most of these songs. While I think both discs are extremely worthwhile, there's just something about volume 9 that makes it a bit more rewarding. I am not a Christian or a very religious person, but this music has enough conviction to imbue anyone with some sort of religious appreciation. This disc allows for a moving experience of joy and glory by proxy, and you know by listening to it that these people put their all into the performance.
A little too authentic for me.......2004-07-30
Everything that was written in the other reviews is essentially correct; the songs are great and passionately sung. However, being a newcomer to Sacred Harp music, and having heard only the clean and crisp sound of the Cold Mountain soundtrack songs, I was hoping for higher quality sound on this disc. I can't say I wasn't warned by the other reviewers, but I didn't realize how distracting the sour notes and poor sound balance would be for me. If you are looking for an authentic sound, this is the cd for you; if you think you might be distracted by the imperfections, look elsewhere.
Manages to articulate something ineffable and wonderous!.......2004-01-14
I happened upon this disc after becoming re-acquainted with shape note singing via the recently released "Cold Mountain" soundtrack. Wow. There is something thrilling, something visceral and yet greater than oneself, that is provoked upon listening to this wonderful and strange music. This is definitely not the Boston Camerata, so please don't buy it hoping to hear something glossy, high-church and perfectly executed. This is simply rousing, foot-stopping spiritual music sung by real god-fearing folk. Something in this music evoked a certain Proustian nostalgia in this Appalachian woman, reminding me of attending church with my elderly aunt at the tiny Baptist church in Cyrus, West Virginia as a small child--a church so small that the minister was a circuit preacher who rotated between several congregations. That congregation had something of the enthusiasm rendered on this disc-- I listened with tears streaming down my face. I highly reccommend this recording to anyone interested in musical ethnography, or in simply hearing the word of God sung with full-out enthusiasm and joy.
Excellent recording!.......2000-05-10
I found this CD listed when I was looking for something else, so this is most definitely serendipitious! Having had the good fortune to learn Sacred Harp singing from Paul Hillier when he directed our University Chorus, I have always loved the musical style. I have recordings by Boston Camerata, but good as they are, they are not the "unpolished" gems found on this CD. I learned a long time ago that in the tunes that had an alto line, the best altos were those that caused the paint to peel off the wall. Those are the voices on this recording! Talk about singing with sincerity and conviction - no fancy studio work here! If you are interested in the musical heritage of our nation, this is a "must-have"! If you have a hankering for hymns that are most definitely NOT "High Church", you will be well pleased - and who knows? You may find yourself seeking out groups that still practice this musical style - go to an all-day sing, with "dinner on the grounds!"

Jackson authored several works and did extensive research on the often secular roots of Sacred Harp songs and delved into the lives of important original composers such as Billings, Read, and Ingalls. music to move you..........2005-04-05
While the three-star reviewer does have a point (the recording quality on this disc is not as clear as say the southern journey recordings), this should only be of minor consequence. Alan Lomax himself stated that this attempt at recording a sacred harp singing was not as successful as his later attempts in stereo (refer once again to southern journey). However, the recordings are not necessarily unclear or "muddy" as the aforementioned reviewer put it. They are quite clear enough to hear just how emotional and moving these renditions are. While the recording quality is not as good as some other discs, I prefer versions of songs on this disc to others I've heard (David's Lamentation, Wondrous Love, etc.) It also contains the only recorded version I've heard of "Lover of the Lord", a wonderful sort of curiosity within this set, with a sound all its own. For the historical value and notable renditions contained on this disc, it is more than worth your investment. The only prerequisite is that you know what you're getting into: This is some of the most authentic, unabashed and powerful music you're likely to hear, regardless of when or how it was recorded.
Hear God's People in Simple, Perfect Praise.......2004-07-08
I must respont to the "muddy" review. This is not music to be critically listened to as an art form. There is no intention to make art here; this is the sound of the human voice singing words of praise. It's corporate and made for God's ears, not our's which get caught on "hooks" and complicated arrangements. John Wesley said that no voice should stand out - Even I with a highly trained voice just sing along on worship. It's a refreshing diversion from contemporary CHristian praise music which features the voices of Barbie and Ken. THIS IS REAL AND ABSOLUTELY RAW. One is correct if they find it hard to sit back and listen too (unless one has an interest in musicilogy as did the recorder of these songs) BUT IF YOU WANT TO WORSHIP IN A PURE AND NEW (though it's old), I SUGGEST YOU ACQUIRE A HYNAL so you can forgrt about the self and sing along. This recrding was created as an historical document, but it brings me so much more. The COLD MOUNTAIN soundtrack has two of these shape note pieces on it IDUMEA was extremely effective and haunting during the huge battle scene in the movie.
Sacred Harp Singing.......2002-01-20
I found this to sound authentic but "muddy". The words are hard to distinguish at times. This is how we used to sound with untrained voices and not everybody being on exact time.
Fascinating and powerful.......1999-12-28
Someone once described sacred harp singing as singer's music rather than listener's music, which is as accurate a label as I can think of. This is like nothing you've ever heard before and it will stay with you for a long, long time.

breath-taking..........2005-02-11
I first heard sacred harp singers on the anthology of american folk music (harry smith). I could not believe my ears when I heard such raw passion and purity pouring from my speakers! I had to hear more of this strange music, and discovered this collection. This music could never be passively listened to, and may therefore be unnerving to some. This is only due to the fact that it is unbelievably moving. It will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand straight on end. That everybody's voice is used so raw and naturally only adds to the beauty of each harmony. Though some of the songs may seem straight-forward at first listen, there is a remarkable depth created when the voices ebb and flow in their cohesion. Simply sublime!
***Supernal***.......2003-04-22
This and Volume 9 are superior representatives of the transformative power of four-part harmony. No matter the quality of the individual voices, the combined effect is out-of-this-world. The selections are great; not a boring track in the lot. Get your voice in tune for the Great Re-Awakening!
It's Sacred Harp, so of course it's wonderful.......2001-10-02
This is a wonderful recording from the 1959 United Sacred Harp Convention, made by the legendary Alan Lomax. It's a piece of American history.
Think about that, then consider this: You can attend the United Sacred Harp Convention at various, usually Southern, locations on the second Sunday and Saturday before in September. If you go, you'll be singing with some of the people on this CD, even some of the people leading songs. You'll eat food they bring for lunch.
When you listen to a recording like this, you can more easily understand how we can all connect with history in that way, how we can be part of something bigger than ourselves. It's wonderful music and you should listen to it -- though it might sound a little odd if you're used to classical-style singing -- but if you just sit and listen, you're missing the true depth of it.
Very moving yet unlike any music I have heard before........2001-09-03
I bought this CD to add to my gospel collection, not knowing anything about The Sacred Harp or "shape note" singing. From the first song on I was hooked and felt an immediate connection. The songs are sincerely sung, with men and women taking turns leading -- even a 17-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy. The rising and falling of the voices and the harmonizing of the singers are amazing. I don't quite understand what they're singing, so luckily the words are included. This CD is part of The Alan Lomax Collection, and now I'm curious about the other CDs in the series.
If you like different kinds of music, you may enjoy this CD as much as I do. However there's the possibility that this music isn't your cup of tea or you make the people you live with anxious to play something else on the stereo.

Exploring the connections between early music and what we know as folksong, Joel Cohen and his very adventurous and competent band of musicians not only show us where many familiar tunes come from, they also give us fresh and illuminating renditions of songs from the 10th century to the middle of the 20th century. Besides the recording's obvious educational value, its primary purpose, according to Cohen, is "to give pleasure." That it does, often in amusing ways, as when a song with religious origins is transformed into a ribald descendant. It's also fun to see how widespread some songs are, with different versions common to many countries. Cohen demonstrates how songs that came from Renaissance forms were preserved by common folk long after the "elite" classes abandoned them. The songs are enhanced by excellent instrumental playing and well-conceived arrangements. --David Vernier

Charming, simple & striking. Full of delightful surprises!.......2002-11-29
Many early music groups these days explain cross-cultural musical influences in their program notes, and proceed to play their selections accordingly. Joel Cohen and the Boston Camerata take it the logical step further by actually performing the "root" pieces side by side with the later music that reflects their particular influence. The result is inspired, thought-provoking groupings of related tunes and texts that span not only centuries but continents. The Boston Camerata is primarily a vocal ensemble, with a sound that is spare, pure and direct. Some of their renditions are performed a cappella, while others are accompanied by light, period instrumentation. If you've ever heard this group live in concert, you may recall the surreal effect of sitting in a theater that is pin-drop quiet, waiting for one or two musicians at a time to step forward and break the silence with a clarity and presence that holds the entire audience spellbound from first note to last. The effect of listening to this recording is much the same. My favorites on this release are the groupings of different versions of the same ballad--"Three Ravens", "Gypsy Davy", and "Barbara Allen", for example. The pairing of the Appalacian song "Betty Anne" with its exact harmonic match--a 16th century ricercada for viols by Diego Ortiz--is also quite striking, and I also enjoyed the "shape-note" and "Fa-sol-la" singing-school selections representative of early American music. In the insert, director Joel Cohen explains: "This unorthodox recording, an intentionally provocative mix of early art song and modern folksong, is meant first of all to give pleasure - but it is also a meditation on history, on archetypes, and on the transmission of human culture." The Boston Camerata succeeds admirably here on both counts!
Tour de Force of American Musical Roots!.......2001-01-05
Prepare to go on an amazing, haunting musical tour when you put this disc on your player. Joel Cohen (bless him) has once again assembled a group of musicians and singers who are up to the task of taking themselves, and you the listener, back through the mists of musical time. This disc contains songs that span hundreds of years, many of which actually originate in other lands. Yet, these songs would find their way into the early diverse fabric of colonial America, and go on to inspire much of emerging folk music in this country. Some of these songs are secular, but others have a distinctly religious flavor (as in the first piece on Judgment Day and the "stars falling"). Others are merry, dance-like tunes, and remind one of what might have been performed in medieval courts in Europe. Some are sung in english, others in different languages. The range of musical style and vocal interpretation is incredible. This wonderful diversity reminds the listener that America always had diverse roots, and even in colonial times, we were a nation that drew its strength and inspiration from many cultural sources. I like to listen to this disc during the bleak nights of winter, but it is wonderful music for any occasion. If you really are intrigued by the historical development of American music -- or any music -- then this disc is a "must" for your collection. Also recommended: "The World Turned Upside Down" (Barry Philips), "A Land of Pure Delight" (His Majestie's Clerkes), and "Simple Gifts: Shaker Cbants and Spirituals" (Joel Cohen and Boston Camerata).
Astonishing.......2000-03-25
The album is astonishing. It is rare to find a continuous line of musical thought from the turn of the previous millenium to its end. This album demonstrates the evolution of music over about a thousand year period and includes some very early versions of what we would call modern songs.
It is worth the price of the CD several times over and is one of my favorites in my CD collection.

Customer Reviews:
Gospel music like you've never heard it before.......2004-09-29
More rare old 78s, profiling the arcane art of shape-note, or sacred harp, gospel singing, an unusal and distinctive American style. These are all artists from the 1920s and '30s that very, very few people have ever heard of, vocal groups such as the Fa-So-La Singers, Dye's Sacred Harp Singers, Daniels-Deason Sacred Harp Singers, Lee Wells Sacred Harp Singers and others. The music is alien and bizarre, rough-hewn harmonies that tear across standard tonality in odd, zig-zag patterns, a sound so unusual it is one of America's great "outsider" art styles. The Allison's Sacred Harp Singers ensemble is the subject of an entire separate disc (also out on the County Records label), though they are represented here by several tunes as well... The sacred harp style is still kept alive by devoted churchgoers throughout the South, but here is a chance to hear some of its earliest recorded examples, some spooky old music that definitely has the Holy Spirit surging through it. Recommended!

Customer Reviews:
The other reviews only PARTLY right.......2002-08-14
I agree with both other reviewers re the duo coronet/organ arrangements on SOME of the bands of Disk #2 I have, but McCann plays them very well and the organ is fine if you like the organ (which I don't). BUT, the OTHER BANDS include orchestra and on ALL bands McCann really plays beautifully. However, I will not buy another disk of these because of the duo performance bands and - WHAT A SHAME as ALMOST ALL THE PIECES REALLY ARE AMONG WORLD'S MOST BEAUTIFUL and MANY are very difficult, if not impossible, to find ANY arrangement of (though at least half on each cd readily avail other perfs arrangements).
Misleading CD title!.......2000-12-16
Thought I was purchasing a nice compendium of beautiful songs to listen to on long trips. You'd better love the golden cornet if you buy this CD - or, rather, 5 CDs!
Hope you like the "Golden Cornet" and organ..........2000-03-19
This CD set has all the greatest melodies... only they are performed by some guy and his "golden cornet" (a horn). There is accompaniment by an organ. This set WOULD have been great, IF it was performed by a piano. Huge disappointment. Would have been nice to know what instrument was used to begin with.
