Jeff Deyo's first solo release, Saturate, clarifies why SonicFlood struggled with its first post-Deyo release, Resonate: Deyo left. On Saturate, the former SonicFlood frontman has captured the energy and essence that helped make his former group such a force in modern praise and worship. Simply put, Deyo knows how to rock. He infuses enough electricity in "More Love, More Power," for example, to light Manhattan for a weekend. Midtempo rockers "Let It Flow" and "Lose Myself" are balanced by the pensive "All I Want" and the atmospheric "Thank You for Life." And much like SonicFlood, Deyo splices music tracks with his personal thoughts on the nature of today's worship. Any Christian rock fan will appreciate and be moved by this holy roller. --Michael Lyttle

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre debut doesn't do band justice........2007-05-09

For a true taste of this band, get "We Are Not Alone" or "Phobia". Those are both excellent examples of what this band can do. I think this cd was just slightly more thrown together without as much focus on making each song interesting. BB is one of the best hard rock bands of this decade and are growing in popularity. This is still a decent cd, but it pales in comparison to their newer stuff. If you are a fan, buy it. There are some really good songs, but it has some you'll probably feel like skipping, too.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent start up.......2007-05-07

Considering this is BB start up album, it isn't too bad. Only gets better from here with their other two albums...We Are Not Alone and Phobia.

5 out of 5 stars Actually 4.5 stars, but who's counting? .......2007-04-04

Saturate, the debut album by Breaking Benjamin, is a very strong start for the band. I actually listened to Breaking Benjamin with We Are Not Alone, but decided to go back to their debut album to see their musical foundation, so to speak. I was not disappointed. Despite some major weaknesses exhibited in this album, they were relieved by WANA. My opinions:

1. Wish I May: nice wordplay on the nursery rhyme into a more angst-ridden and angry version. Even more impressive is their introduction, which goes off with a screaming bam. 4/5
2. Medicate: absolutely gorgeous song. the music is beautiful. i'm not much of a musical expert, but for a casual listener like me, it's ear candy. The somewhat mediocre part is the lyrics, because it makes absolutely no sense to the point where I can't understand it [this is subject to debate], but the hugely excellent music supersedes the slight lyrical weakness. 5/5
3. Polyamorous: the radio single that introduced Breaking Benjamin to the world. As much as I like it, it's gotten overplayed. Overall solid song that does not sound like a filler [a very very good thing] 3.5/5
4. Skin: has nice musical tonality that alternates between higher and lower. 4/5
5. Natural Life: this one actually reminds me of Wish I May, with its long introduction. Unlike Wish I May, however, the intro builds and revs itself up from the intro, the first verse, and finally to the chorus. Overall great song to sing to and let off some steam. 5/5
6. Next to Nothing: It's a rather calm song but no less better than the heavier ones. 5/5
7. Water: My absolute favorite. Like Medicate, the slight problem is the lyrics, but the music is so strong it can stand well on its own by going into this crescendo until it reaches its ultimately satisfying climax. It reminds me of a car engine and how it's trying to warm up, until it finally goes off at the end. That's how the song is. Burnley's vocals particularly stand out as well. 6/5
8. Home: Another favorite, with a creative spin on The Wizard of Oz. Ingenious. 6/5
9. Phase: Good intro, overall solid song. 5/5
10. No Games: Nice incorporation of orchestral music into guitar riffs and drums. 4/5
11. Sugarcoat: Saccharine sounding title, which is ironic given the fact this is one of the heaviest songs on the album. All the better-- moshpit, head-banging worthy. 5/5
12. Shallow Bay: kickass ending to an overall awesome album that goes out with a bang. 5/5
13. (bonus): Many people have stated their unhappiness with this song because it's softer and much less aggressive. I myself do not have any problem with it. In fact, I find this to be a very vulnerable song that resonates within. Not the best ballad out there in music history, but decent nonetheless. 4/5

Overall: Very solid musically, but lyrics were a bit eh on some of them. Thankfully, this was remedied with We Are Not Alone, where it had the abstract touch without going all over the place. This album is more raw and explosive, and is definitely worth the money. For a debut album, Breaking Benjamin has the chops and talent that were honed eventually in their subsequent album [Phobia, however is a slightly different story].

Definite favorites: Medicate, Water, Shallow Bay, Phase.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive Debut...........2007-01-12

From a guy that is a huge fan of Slayer, Pantera, Dream Theater, Opeth, Suffocation, and all great heavy/death/progressive/thrash metal alike, it's pretty hard for me these days to like a radio rock band. There are few exceptions (such as Coheed and Cambria, Foo Fighters, Three Days Grace, Boy Hits Car, and Deftones) but mostly it all sucks (to name a few, Nickelback [the first two were good, IMO, but they began to suck afterwards] and Crossfade). But when I came across "So Cold," I was immediately hooked on to Breaking Benjamin. I bought "We Are Not Alone" and fell in love with it! Then I bought "Phobia" (their best album to date, IMO) to keep me occupied until Christmas where I recieved "Saturate."

Upon recieving "Saturate," I didn't immediately listen to it, because I had Dream Theater's "Train of Thought" to listen to (awesome CD, btw). But when I did finally listen to the album, I instantly loved it! I was immediately hooked on to each song ("Wish I May" and "Home," specifically). Oh sure, this isn't the likes of much heavier bands (so much heavier than it's like comparing apples and oranges), but at least Ben and Aaron don't bore you with the same friggin' power chords like most bands do. They take these simple little riffs and actually MAKE something out of them. The bass is audible enough to give this thing a pulse and the drums are basically what you would hear in a hard rock band (only better!). "Saturate" is actually competing with Coheed and Cambria's "Good Apollo" and Disturbed's "Believe" as my favorite radio rock album to listen to.

A quick little scorebook of the songs:

1. Wish I May: 5/5 (awesome riff!)
2. Medicate: 5/5 (nice vocals by Ben)
3. Polyamorous: 4.5/5
4. Skin: 4/5
5. Natural Life: 4.5/5
6. Next to Nothing: 4.5/5
7. Water: 5/5
8. Home: 5/5 (references to "The Wizard of Oz" are made in this song)
9. Phase: 3/5 (doesn't appeal to me)
10. No Games: 4/5
11. Sugarcoat: 4.5/5
12. Shallow Bay: 5/5
BONUS TRACK: 5/5

Overall, whether you're not impressed with what today's mainstream has to offer, at least give "Saturate" a spin in your stereo. If you don't, then that's fine. I can understand. But BB has been an impressive band so far, in my humble opinion, and I will continue to follow them. No matter if the next release is horrible or not.

5 out of 5 stars The album that left me mute........2007-06-10

Saturate Before Using is one of my favorite all time albums, both in it's music and lyrical beauty. I have been playing guitar since I was 10. I started working on writing my own songs right around the time that I first heard this album. The lyrics were so sublime, honest, intimate, powerful and articulate that it sets the bar so high for what songwriting should be that for many years I found myself lyrically mute, feeling like the standard for what truly great songwriting should be was now set almost impossibly high.

At the same time the simple paired-down beauty of the music itself reveals that it isn't over-the-top production that make a song great, it's the passion with which it is written.

4 out of 5 stars REMASTER ????.......2007-04-11

Fantastic work from Jackson! My main purpose for entering this "review" is to plead with the label for a REMASTERED version....

4 out of 5 stars jackson browne's 1972 debut........2007-03-23

a fine first outting from the artist that epitomizes the sensitive singer-songwriter genre. "doctor my eyes," "something fine," and "rock me on the water," are fantastic, and the other seven tracks are excellent to boot. mr browne has a very pleasing voice that is warm and expressive, tinged with a heartfelt sense of melancholy which permeates his ballads. if you are new to jackson browne, i would recommend the "late for the sky" album as your first purchase. after that, "the pretender," or "running on empty," or this one (his debut), are all fine choices. good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Another flawless release.......2004-06-09

I would be misrepresenting this album by calling it Jeff Deyo's first solo "effort," because the album works in a way that makes you wonder why all albums on the market don't flow so well. I'm convinced that the original SONICFLOOd release is unbeatable, but their former lead singer pushes it to the max again with soulful lyrics, rocking tracks, and a worshipper's heart that is revealed through his music. The lyrics go deeper than before, addressing the immersion of oneself in the greatness of God and sharing that with the entire world. It's impossible to pick out highlights, so I won't even try. Let's just say that this is as much a rock and roll album as it is a worship album. Although the amazing talent of the original SONICFLOOd band is sorely missed, the new backups are lacking in nothing, recapturing and advancing the sound that made SONICFLOOd so successful. If you're looking for the passion, power, and energy of the original SONICFLOOd, you will find that it has a new home in this spirit-filled release.

    5 out of 5 stars An Experience!.......2003-12-05

This is one of the Best Christian albums I've heard. I went To Y.C Newfoundland and Jeff Deyo was There, he sang songs like You Are Good and Saturate, it was AMAZING, this album is WORTH having, it's one of the best album's I've heard when it comes to worship and you can tell that Jeff is a great worship leader, I recommend buying this album!

    5 out of 5 stars Totally Awesome.......2003-07-26

I normally dont write reviews. I only read them. But this time I can't help myself ...

The first time I heard the Saturate album, was at Bible Camp this summer, where Jeff Deyo himself, performed live. And I must say that I was hooked right away.

The worship concert was like being a part of the Sonicpraise album ... totally amazing.

I got the chance to talk to him afterwards, getting his autograph on my newly bought Saturate Album :)

This CD will fit anyone's cd rack. Or i could say it like this: if you'r cd rack doesn't have Jeff Deyo: Saturate, it's not complete!!!

GREAT EXPERIENCE, GREAT ALBUM ... GET IT BEFORE YOUR NEIGBOUR!

5 out of 5 stars led into his presence.......2003-07-15

And thats what Jeff Deyo has done for me everytime I have listened to this CD: led me into a deeper place, into the presence of our great Lord.

This is THE single most inspirational and deep worship album I have ever owned, I love third day, delerious, matt redmon, and mercyme, but this is it. No matter what mood I am in, no matter how hard my day, when I worship along with these songs I am renewed.

From begining to end this album just feels complete. It starts out strong in "More Love, More Power," progressively getting slower and more soulful till it hits 2 beautiful and meditative instrumentals flanking "You are good," then finishes strong with an ode to a classic, and a duet with rebecca st. james (who you really cant hear thet well, which is interesting).

As far as the prayers that one reviewer critisized, I have another way of looking at it. These allowed me to see Mr. Deyo not as a rock star, or celebrity, but as a fellow believer, using his talents to further the Kingdom. It gave me a view of him not as someone seeking fame and fortune, but as a man humbly offering his gifts to God. That is my take, and It added to the CD so much.

5 out of 5 stars three words: buy it now........2003-04-30

i cannot recommend this album enough. it's true that jeff deyo has captured the very essence of the original sonicflood. there're a bit of taking old songs and making them louder and better, but the original compositions are extremely moving and heartfelt.

the music is just SO good. it just absolutely ROCKS, the kind that makes you get out of your chair and just -- i don't know, it's difficult to explain, but the entire cd is just pulsating with energy and fervour.

and, like it or not, there's always going to be comparisons between the old and the new sonicflood. and i say, if you have money enough for only one cd, get saturate instead of one of the new sonicflood albums. the new sonicflood isn't bad, but i think they should get a new name. because it's just tiring to think sonicflood and hence jeff deyo style, and then get something that's just... not.

but i digress. jeff deyo rocks, and his band backs him up with immense support. this album is truly a god-blessed project.
