Why Brian Doerksen isn't better known in this country is beyond me. It's lucky our church music director has a broad reach. we do all the first five tracks, track 10 and 14. "to-day," "Everlasting," and "The River," are my favorites on this album "the River," especially, puts me in mind of Michael Martin Murphey at his best. What a treatment he could give this one if he wanted to. If I knew there was music like this back in the '80s, I might not have wobbled down the road to destruction for as long as I did before seeing how far out of bounds I was wobbling. This is one of the CD's I play when I need to remind myself to keep to the straight and narrow, and not do what's easier, and deadlier.

Brian is a top artist with a warm hart for his Lord - no doubt about it. Personally I prefer the live DVD, which gets you a lot more then the songs. The DVD was recorded nearby his home town, and before the final song Brian invites his family to appear on stage, which is cool. To top it off, the final song (Today - reprise) Brian sings together with his Dad.
The DVD also contains lots of interviews, articles, artist information, which is quite interesting.

5 out of 5 stars An ambitious, passionate work of art.......2004-10-11

Until the last few years, Doerksen was mostly known for penning such brilliant worship classics as Refiner's Fire and Halleluiah You're Love Is Amazing, both sung in many evangelical Christian churches. He only stepped into the performing spotlight with You Shine, an excellent live-in-concert worship recording made in Ireland a few years ago.

As followups go, Today is a slam-dunk, over-the-top success.

Basing the project on the Old Testament passage Nehemiah 4, Doerksen brought in all kinds of special guests (such as the Mennonite Jazz Committee for an inspiring, light jazz treatment of Great Is Thy Faithfulness) and did duets on several tracks to create a rather humblingly ambitious work of art.

This is a quieter recording than You Shine, but carries as much, if not more of an emotional/spiritual wallop. His arrangments are always interesting and his melodies never fail to hold my interest. And check out the liner notes! Each song has a little essay with it, so this project is as much fun to read as it is to listen to.

And, As if writing and arranging this material and setting up a concert isn't enough, he also put together a DVD. Man, the guy is ambitious, but it all works very well.

5 out of 5 stars A journey into the presence of God.......2004-10-08

I watched on DVD rather than just listened to this album. It was the most inspirational experience of worship I have ever entered into through a media form. Beware of watching and listening to it,if you don't want to be changed. Brian Doerkson and the Christians in his community take us into the loving but challenging presence of the Creator God who gave us his Son to be our model. It is a journey into intimacy that calls us to stand and build the foundations and walls of a life that will last for ever because it is rooted in the eternal values of God.The quality of the musicianship was superb and the total lack of ego truly humbling.
