Woven in Time

Displaying an amazingly diverse vocal talent, Steve Green's 24th recording mixes guitar-driven pop, Gregorian chants, symphonic ballads, and Appalachian bluegrass with equal aplomb. The plentiful highlights include Green's gritty performance on "If We Answer," recorded with Out of the Grey's Scott and Christine Dente. Green gets more organic with the Celtic-tinged "Sacrifice of Praise" and the folkloric "O Pilgrim Come," the latter from the top-selling O Brother, Where Art Thou soundtrack. He changes gears once again on "Non Nobis Domine," the big-production chant taken from the Henry V soundtrack. Green seems to revel in Woven in Time's rich sampling of different styles as he takes the listener on a joyful ride. --Michael Lyttle

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring Christian devotionals.......2005-09-25

I'm not really familiar with Contemporary Christian as I think this genre is called, but Woven In Time is a most enjoyable work. The first three songs are all slow ballads: Pleasures Of The King has prominent guitars and strings, Thread Of Scarlet classical guitar and strings and God Of Wonders lovely keyboard flourishes.

The tempo picks up for the structurally complex rock ballad If We Answer with its moving lyrics, whilst I Will Go is more like a traditional hymn and Sacrifice Of Praise has a Celtic flavour with exotic instruments like bouzouki, penny whistle and Uillean pipes. This one has a very immediate melody and the most ecstatic feel. Green's voice really soars here, this is definitely my favourite on the album!

There is a soulful feel to Grace And Nothing More with its gospel vocals framed by organ touches. From gospel to country with Oh Pilgrim Come that is embellished with dobro, fiddle and mandolin. Another tuneful number in a pop vein is titled Whatever It Takes, and the album concludes with his rendition of Non Nobis Domine (Psalm 115:1).

There is an impressive variety of styles on display, the music is tuneful and the lyrics poetic. The songs I enjoy most include Pleasures Of The King, Sacrifice Of Praise, Oh Pilgrim Come and Whatever It Takes. Woven In time is a most inspiring album of devotional music. At times it reminds me of The Waterboys, at other moments a little bit of Van Morrison. The CD booklet contains all the lyrics and quotes from CS Lewis, John Piper and Ravi Zacharias.

5 out of 5 stars songs of praise, voice of gold.......2003-12-20

With a golden voice and exquisite artistry, Steve Green has given the world a masterful collection of songs with this CD; it is one of the best contemporary Christian music albums I have heard, with lovely melodies and uplifting lyrics.
Steve co-wrote "I Will Go", and the tender "Holding Hands", about God's daily grace in a good marriage; all eleven songs are strong, with my favorite being "Thread of Scarlet", written by Wes King, who plays classical guitar in the first version on track # 2, and it is given a fuller treatment in the short reprise on track # 11.
Overall, the songs are serene and soft ballads, with the exception of the upbeat "If We Answer", the gospel flavored "Grace and Nothing More" which builds to a mighty conclusion, and the traditional "Non Nobis Nomine", where Steve unleashes the power and range of his voice. The arrangements and musicianship are excellent throughout, and the booklet insert contains all the lyrics. Total time is 48'28.

With his beautiful voice and good looks, Steve could have been a pop icon, but chose to use his talents as a ministry instead, and in his prolific recording career (in Spanish as well as English) of nearly 20 years, this CD released in 2002 is a treasure, and is sure to fill your heart and bless your soul.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music 'Woven' in an Album.......2002-12-31

This is a good album by my favorite Christian vocalist, Steve Green, who uses his God-given voice to glorify God through music. I appreciate this CD not only for the quality of music but also the lyrics that minister spiritually to the heart.

Prevalent themes throughout this CD communicate the greatness of the "God of Wonders," His sovereignty, and our submission to Him. My favorite songs include "If We Answer," "I Will Go," "Sacrifice of Praise," and "Non Nobis Domine" which means "Not Unto Us, O Lord" (But to Your name may all the glory be).

5 out of 5 stars A new clasic.......2002-07-30

As usual, he has created another clasic. It is the best CD he has put out in recent years. The words to his songs are profound and express what many chistians have experienced. Only the truly committed could sing some of these songs. Worth every penny.

Product Description

Available for the first time, Mark Roebuck, teaming up with then-fellow-bartender Dave Matthews in 1990 to write and record a rich, folk-acoustic CD, woven with dark, sometimes melancholy themes. Mark Roebuck, formerly of the 80s power-pop band the Deal, began work on Tribe of Heaven in 1989. He invited then fellow bartender Dave Matthews to assist him in writing and recording a CD-length project. Tribe of Heaven would produce a rich, folk-acoustic sound, woven with dark, sometimes melancholy themes. The Tribe of Heaven project included nine songs, five written by Mark Roebuck alone, three written by Mark Roebuck and Dave Matthews together, and one a cover of U2's "In God's Country." Mark and Dave both sang and played on all songs. Greg Howard added keyboards on "Imagine We Were" and "Half the Time." Mike Rosenski played guitar on "Touch." The recording was done locally in Scottsville, Virginia on 8 track reel to reel at the home studio of Greg Howard during two sessions separated by about 6 months. Tribe of Heaven was informally shopped around in early 1990, but without success. Dave would go on to form Dave Matthews Band the next year and include a Tribe of Heaven song, "The Song that Jane Likes," on the band's first release, Remember Two Things. The Tribe of Heaven project lay dormant for more than a decade until a revival of interest in Mark's various musical projects, and interest from Dave's many fans, led to this release.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!.......2007-02-22

This cd is great!!! I was listening to some "random music" on [...], and at a certain point they were playing "Imagine we were". I fell in love, I had to buy the whole cd immediately! But I was afraid that the other songs were not worth it...and I was WRONG!! I would definitely recommend to buy this cd!

5 out of 5 stars Interesting...........2005-08-02

I'm a fairly recent dave fan. I really enjoy the dave and tim shows and thought this would be similar. It is, although you can tell the songs were written and recorded at the end of the 80s. The Song that Jane likes is a very good version and the whole cd is worth checking out, especially for any dave fan.
