Love Falls Down
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
The level on pain and need in the world is overwhelming. Sometimes we feel as if we cannot bear it all. In truth, without the presence of God, we cannot. What a blessing it is to know that HIS boundless LOVE FALLS DOWN upon us constantly, infusing us with strength and hope. This hold sustenance is the theme for LOVE FALLS DOWN, with Sheila Walsh. Its contemporary styling contains POP and ETHEREAL orchestral elements that will delight and intrigue you. With Celtic melodies and layered background vocals in songs like "Where Truth And Mercy Meet" and "Your Love Falls Down," Sheila reminds us that GOD'S ETERNAL LOVE can make a lasting DIFFERENCE IN OUR LIVES.

Album Description
John Duke (1899-1984) is one of the acknowledged masters of the American art song. This release of twenty-three of his finest songs will afford lovers of vocal music the opportunity to discover Duke's little-known corpus. Comparison with the musical language of other notable American art song composers (Griffes, Loeffler, or Ives, for instance) reveals an unusually consistent and personal style throughout most of Duke's career, the composer venturing only slightly afield of a conventional tonal practice derived mostly from European music of the nineteenth century. Musical influences on his language, in fact, are almost entirely European; most of his songs have an accompanimental texture unmistakably his, continuing, in a way, the tradition of the German Lied, using poems in English.
Duke often claimed, both in his writings and in conversation with colleagues, to have developed his art song style somewhat self-consciously after having studied in great detail the historical, poetical, and musical contexts of three previous genres exhibiting a marriage of music and poetry: the Elizabethan song, the nineteenth-century Lied and the French mélodie of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His choice of poetry avoids almost completely the abstract in favor of the tried and true themes of love and mortality, themes that most composers have found the most suitable for musical treatment. Duke's music is taken very seriously by those who know his work intimately. After all, about how many American composers could it be said that all 265 songs have a natural feel for the voice, an elegantly matched pianistic accompaniment, a recognizable and personal style, and a musical language that never resorts to false syntax? It is easy to see why American singers love to sing his songs.

A Generous Packet of Art Songs by American Composer John Duke.......2006-01-27
Though his name may not be a household word among American composers, to singers the lieder of John Woods Duke are a staple of the recital repertoire. A composer well respected in his lifetime (1899 - 1984), his 265 catalogued songs are the epitome of the marriage of text and music. His musical style never veered from melodic but his integration of poetry with his expressive understanding of the voice places him in the same category with Ives, Griffes, Rorem, Barber, Heggie et al.
This fine recital by soprano Lauralyn Kolb, a former student of the highly regarded Howard Swan of Occidental College and a sought after oratorio soloist and recitalist, with pianist Tina Toglia is a study in musical intelligence. Kolb's soprano voice is beautifully focused and her communication of the texts ranging from ee cummings, Emily Dickinson, Elinor Wylie, Sarah Teasdale, Robert Frost, Richard Nickson, Mark Van Doren to James Joyce is pristine and warmly sensitive. Her collaboration with Toglia demonstrates the way musicians should approach the art song. There are many excellent songs in this collection that could be singled out, but the pleasure of the recital is that the variety selected by the artists is very satisfying for a survey of works by a relatively unknown (to the public) composer. Recommended. Grady Harp, January 06

Album Description
Robin Frederick is a singer-songwriter whose work is a haunting blend of deep grooves, uniquely poetic lyrics, and vocals reminiscent of Sade and Dusty Springfield. Her latest album, WATER FALLS DOWN, showcases nine intoxicating new songs. From the chill groove of O Sleeper, O Outsider - hailed as "...a miraculous breakthrough into a feeling world" by British music critic Ian MacDonald - to the worldbeat/trance rhythm of The Messenger, this album takes you on a journey through the shadowy depths of extreme romance.

Grown Up Music Therapy.......2007-05-06
This is my first musical introduction to Robin Frederick.
After many decades of love songs (and other songs) that have used, abused and recylced cliches, Robin's music is a fasinatingly welcomed voyage for this listener, who is also a singer and songwriter.
Before hearing her music I spent time just with the lyrics to "Water Falls Down" and was immediately impacted by the power of the poetry. Then I decided to read the many reviews of her previous CD's and was educated on the interesting use of her rhythm grooves, instrumental choices and also noted the stylistic and vocal comparisons to other well-known artists. This furthered my curiosity when the time came to finally have my devoted listen to this CD. From the first moment I was able to determine for myself that Robin is a gifted artist, intelligent guide and herself, an incredible Muse. She has a beautiful voice with alluring, mystical qualities that gently float and yet she feels very grounding. Her lyrics are like reading a documentary field journal with raw personal experiences that she had witnessed but was powerless to change. Her music will be best appreciated by seasoned lovers, avant garde poets and the self examined. She (gratefully) passes through the ports of call for the sea sick lovers who find comfort in familiar rhyme-time or catchy chorus hooks. Be warned that when you begin this voyage, within the first two tracks of "Water Falls Down" and "The Messenger" that the name of the ship that you have boarded is called REGRET... After that she moves through various other emotional waters until she finally finds some peace by asking for help (from the unseen world) about her pain and regret with the final track, "Angel, Cover Me". I found it a privilege to travel with her through these intense love and loss experiences. The uncharted territory and deep feeling fjords of this most personal voyage with Robin was very vulnerable and real. The best way for me to describe this CD is Music Therapy Grown Up. I hope to journey with her again in the future and suspect that her unique style of writing and voice weaving will become a standard to which others singer/songwriters will be compared.

Great Album.......2005-08-27
Sheila Walsh is one of my favorite singers ever since she started back in the 80's as a rocker. Her newer music is a lot more mellow then some of her older rock hits. This is my favorite album out of her newer music. My favorites on this album are "Where Truth And Mercy Meet", "Again & Again", "Lead Me To The Water", "Love Falls Down", & "Nobody Loves Me Like You" I highly recommend this album to you along with all her others. She has a beautiful voice and her honesty will leave you encouraged. She understands God's love for us and shows us this in her music. This is a must have CD.
Gentle, reflective worship-style music.......2002-04-27
Walsh started in the contemporary christian music world during the 1980s as a brash new wave-style singer. (And good luck finding those albums!) Now, as she's moved into middle age and motherhood, she's become a best-selling inspirational author, seminar leader and singer/writer of gentle, reflective ballads. The style works very well with her clear, strong voice. For Love Falls Down Walsh has set aside her Scottish celtic influences to make a gently contemporary worship recording with occasional drums, plenty of harmony vocals and titles like Where Truth And Mercy Meet. 'Love' is in the title of 4 of the album's 10 tracks, so you know where she's going most of the time.

I enjoyed this album immensely. Ms. Walsh has a beautiful voice and her love for God comes shining through. Several songs brought tears to my eyes. Also nice music to play softly in the background while praying or meditating.
