Number five in Windham Hill's Celtic Christmas series, this may be the best of the lot with evocative compositions and arrangements that don't slip into seasonal sentimentality, better known as schmaltz. Produced by Micheal O'Domhnaill, the guitarist and founder of Nightnoise, the disc centers on members of that band. Nightnoise gives a Celtic chamber music feel to the traditional Irish carol, "The Flight into Egypt," while also offering up the serene original, "No Room at the Inn." Nightnoise singer Triona Ni Dhomhnaill duets with her sister Maighread on the quavering harmonies of "Barbara Allen," while Micheal O'Domhnaill joins fiddler Paddy Glackin on "The Green Fields of Amerikay." William Coulter and Benjamin Verdery provide dual acoustic guitar filigree on "Flow Gently Sweet Afton" and Nightnoise flutist Brian Dunning joins Jeff Johnson on "Down the Chimney." There's something about that Celtic lilt, the sound of low whistles, cranky uilleann pipes, and Turlough O'Carolan tunes that instantly conjure up the warmth, quiet, and mysticism of Christmas. And it's all on A Celtic Christmas: Peace on Earth. --John Diliberto

5 out of 5 stars An escape.......2006-11-11

This cd is a wonderful investment. Anytime i'm feeling lonely or stressed, or anything that makes me need calming, i turn this on. The compilations are hauntingly beautiful, especially Strath Glass(e)? The tunes are perfect for the holidays, to turn on in a dark room lit by christmas lights, or just anytime you need to escape into windswept moors and misty isles coated in a thin blanket of snow or fog. It is relaxing anytime of the year, and echo of the most holy holiday of the year when played at Christmas time. I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone who once in a while needs an escape.

3 out of 5 stars a marketing gimmick.......2005-12-19

This is certainly a pleasant enough album. It definitely has a Celtic feel, unlike some albums that claim to be Celtic and are not. There is a hint of New Age, as well, so it is not traditionally Celtic, a minor drawback if you are looking for a totally Celtic album. My biggest complaint is that this is marketed as a Christmas album, but only 25% ( 3 of 12) tracks are actually Christmas songs. The rest are Celtic tunes, some traditional, others apparently of recent composition. The best Celtic track is #7, "Barbara Allen," performed by Trion and Maighread Ni Dhomhnaill. If you like Celtic mix albums, this is a pretty good one. It can be played just about any time of the year. No one listening would identify it as a Christmas album. That is exactly why I rated it a three star album. It isn't what it purports to be and I have a problem with album producers that misrepresent their product. It is a good album, but certainly NOT a good CHRISTMAS album. I am disappointed that Windham Hill would resort to subtrefuge in order to market a nice album. If you are looking only for Celtic music, I would recommend this album. If you want to get into the Christmas spirit, look for something else.

5 out of 5 stars It isn't just for Christmas! .......2004-12-02

Put this on in the holiday season and don't be surprised that you will be looking for it in the middle of the year. This is definitely a peaceful CD and one which isn't so Christmassy you have to play it only in December. One of the best of the bunch!

5 out of 5 stars Christmas Time or Not, This is a Great Album!.......2003-12-05

I first discovered this collection about two years ago, and what a find! The music is hauntingly beautiful, and a great diversion from the "normal" Christmas fare available today. From the first track by Nightnoise "The Flight Into Egypt" you are taken away to a new land, where the music is soothing and relaxing. What a cure for the stress of the holiday! If you are looking for brilliant music, with a wintery feel, pick up this album.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2000-08-12

I popped this one in my CD player at work last Christmas. All my co-workers wanted to know what it was. A very moving collection of Celtic tunes, and definitely not your typical Christmas CD, as some tunes are not "Christmassy". I think it's good for listnening year round.

5 out of 5 stars Peace: A Celtic Christmas,.......2007-01-08

Sheila Walsh is a wonderful singer. if you like Enya you will enjoy Sheila she has a peaceful but powerful voice and this album is just great.
The songs just give me shivers when I here them she did a wonderful job in recording the album. the instrument are of a old period of time and so are the songs. Their are some traditional Christmas songs but for the most part the songs are different. I even think she wrote some of the songs. This is a great album for anybody who love Christmas music. She has a Choir and Orchestra joining here as well as some instrument that sound from the baroque age. Very well done. I would be nice if the record company would re-reissue this album.

Sincerely, Jason or Peter Pielak.

4 out of 5 stars Peaceful, heavenly Christmas CD, but not really too Celtic.......2004-03-07

I'm a long time Sheila Walsh fan from back in the 1980's when she made a different style of Christian music then she does now. This CD is very peaceful, a heavenly Christmas CD, but not really very Celtic in flavor. The only Celtic song that I can recognize is "In The Bleak Midwinter." She is from Scotland, so it is Celtic in that way. That aside it is quite lovely and wonderful Christmas CD.

4 out of 5 stars Great Christmas - Poor Celtic.......2003-12-30

This is indeed a wonderful Christmas album, however, if you are looking for a truly Celtic Christmas album, look elsewhere. The misleading title is about the only thing keeping this from being a 5 star, as I was a bit disappointed by the lack of Celtic music. Yes, there are the occassional "Celtic textures," but not nearly enough to qualify as a Celtic album. It is, in fact, an excellent traditional Christmas album. If you like Shelia Walsh and/or Christmas albums, you will probably like this album - as long as you know what you are getting.

5 out of 5 stars More than a Christmas album.......2001-11-07

This album is incredible! It is far more than a Christmas album. I listen to it year round. It seems new and fresh with each hearing. In these times, it has a calming and uplifting effect on one's psyche. I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars superb!.......2001-03-04

I cannot say enough good things about this beautiful CD. The production is top notch incorporating lush orchestrations and some year 2000 electronic touches. Sheila Walsh is a captivating singer and she communicates the true meaning of Christmas and her love for Christ very effectively throughout this CD. It is a CD that I will enjoy for years to come.

    5 out of 5 stars Fondest Memories.......2004-03-16

Having seen the Beers family perform when I was very young, and having played this album (as the original album my parents owned) over and over again, this recording has the fondest memories for me in the shear beauty of the songs, and the message from the title song, Seasons of Peace, which remains as pertinent today, as in the 60's when it was written and performed. May we all have seasons of peace for our lifetimes.

    5 out of 5 stars Sheer Beauty.......2002-10-28

For the sheer beauty of the human voice singing, this disc stands as an exquisite example. I believe this is healing for a fractured world, and Evelyn, Martha, and Bob Beers provide a welcome balm for wounded souls. Only a few of the songs are overtly religious, but all are testaments to the human spirit. The Beers Family makes me believe that the good, the truth, and the beauty in humanity will prevail. Now if Sony would release the albums they recorded on Columbia Records, I'd be even more grateful. Meanwhile, buy this before it disappears.

5 out of 5 stars They really were a family.......2001-12-30

When I was a small boy, I used to listen to The Beers Family at their home in Petersburg, N.Y.. This album is just like those days gone by; warm, inviting, peaceful. The music is pure, the singers and musicians pouring forth all their love for the music and for each other. It is almost palpable. The unpretentiousness, the song being the focus, the evident joy with which they all sing and play truly make this recording a rare jewel. I only wish I could find the recordings they made each year at their annual bash, The Fox Hollow Festival! Buy this CD. Play it often.

    5 out of 5 stars Earliest memories.......2001-05-18

One of the earliest musical memories I have in life was that of being at the Fox Hollow Folk Festival when I was a little girl. It was August 3, 1972, and I was five years old (I know this because I still have the little wooden dancing man my parents bought me and the date is on it). With that memory, came fragments of songs, and the name "Bob Beers". For some reason tonite, I decided to search on Google and was stunned to find that the LP I remember listening to ever since that festival, had been re-released on CD. I can't express how stunning it was to listen to these samples, of some of the most beautiful songs I have heard in my life, once again... it has probably been 25 years since I've heard these songs, and it brought tears to my eyes. It was profound to hear some of the very same songs which launched a life long love for music in my heart.

This is a classic, for anyone who truly loves folk music ... though I doubt it will make you as mushy as I got :)

    4 out of 5 stars Oldie but a goody!.......2000-10-08

This was originally released as an album in about 1970 and is grass roots folk! A unique family sound with beautiful harmonies makes this classic a keeper, and included among the musicians are Eric Nagler, now a successful children's entertainer, and I believe "the Friends of the Fiddler's Green", a long lived Toronto folk band. This beatiful and sometimes fun recording brought my family many pleasant times - we owned it because my sister, Jane Lambert, was aquainted with several of the musicians. Good stuff! Chris McCrum
