Saints' Paradise: Trombone Shout Bands

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The notion of an old-fashioned trombone band might conjure up funny, nostalgic sounds. But the ecstatic, trombone-heavy brass groups captured live on Saints' Paradise play gospel music that will take you higher. These ensembles, known as trombone shout bands, have stylistic connections to New Orleans jazz brass bands and Albert Ayler's spiritually influenced compositions. However, shout bands can usually only be heard in United House of Prayer churches on the East Coast. A typical shout band features husky lead trombone playing backed by a trombone choir, tuba, and percussion. There are variations on this big sound; Washington, D.C.'s Madison's Lively Stones swagger, while the Happyland Band from Newport News, Virginia, have a smoother, more easygoing style. "Sweet!," by Harlem's McCollough Sons of Thunder, is the CD's longest track. It's nearly seven minutes of ever-building, pure joy. --Fred Cisterna

The Amazon editorial description of this album is right on. A few years back, steel guitar gospel was a cross-over hit. Now it is time for trombone gospel bands. The sound is related to the New Orleans brass bands - but is truly unique. The notes provided with the CD give a good introduction both to the United House of Prayer and to the six shout bands included in the anthology. My personal favorite is One Day at a Time and Ease My Troubled Mind although Madison's Lively Stones are delightful if you want a higher energy music.
