About the Artist
Pronounced CHRIST-AH-FAR-EYE, in Greek, the original language of the New Testament, Christafari is the name given to "a group of people who collectively represent Christ." Founded by Mark Mohr in 1989, Christafari has been a trailblazer, pioneering a new genre of Christian Reggae in the U.S. With their blending of traditional Roots mixed with contemporary Dancehall Reggae they have proclaimed the Gospel of Jesus Christ clearly with relevance to this generation.
Christafari displays that quintessential combination of authentic reggae music and authoritative Christian oration that has brought the group legitimacy in both the reggae music community and the world of Christian ministry for over 10 years.
Band members: Mark & Vanessa Mohr backed by the world famous "Soul Fire Crew".
Album Description
For Christafari fans who couldn't get enough of our instrumental songs like "Freedom Dub" & "Conquering Lion," we have decided to give you an all-you-can-eat buffet of Christafari DUB. Once again, Christafari pioneers a new genre with the first ever Christian dub album. This album contains creative & ambient instrumental mixes of songs found on Christafari's "WordSound&Power" album plus a few bonus tracks, including the never-before-released complete vocal version of the Christafari dancehall song "Babylon Has Fallen." If you recall, this song was briefly featured in the "My Radio (Intro)" of "WordSound&Power." We have also completely re-mixed "Why You Ago Look," introducing new samples of Haile Selassie speaking on sin, forgiveness, and why he chose to follow the Lord Jesus Christ!

Album Description
Dakini Lounge marks Indo-Jazz innovator Prem Joshua's first encounter with DJ science. Here, an eclectic collection of cutting edge mixologists including Karsh Kale, Sean Dinsmore (The Dum Dum Project), Joi and Dharma Dogz (of Waterbone) shed new light on Joshua's signature sound, translating his East-West alchemies into stunning dub, chill and dance floor masterworks.
Prem Joshua has come a long way from the 18-year-old German rocker, mind blown by a Ravi Shankar performance, answering a mysterious call from a faraway place. While spending the better part of 20 years in India (where he has sold well over 50,000 records), Joshua has developed a unique musical style employing sitar, Indian flutes, saxophone, electronica and tarana-style singing that artfullyand skillfullybridges the gap between traditional Eastern sounds and Western jazz forms, prompting the Times of India to dub him "the new guru of East-West fusion music."
Dakini Lounge marks the next logical progression in Prem Joshua's storied career. Placing the master musician's songs in the able hands of these modern day studio mavens presents new interpretations and directions for the many listeners already in love with Prem Joshua's music while introducing him to an ever wider audience.

Ethnic musical loungy electronic work of genuis, this is.......2007-02-26
Very deep, musical journey. One of the best of my collection of electronic music compillations. Very beautiful, I cannot recommend this album enough. I've explored other titles by prem Joshua, but for some reason, they are totally different, and cannot compare to THIS CD. layers upon layers of sound and really chill, very COOL, ethnic, east indian melodies. What can i say, it's one of the best.
Dakini Lounge.......2005-08-13
Loved it! Still love it! Very cool loungey music with a great Indian/Jazz twist. Great listening power. Buy it and see!

Dharma Dogz are amazing!.......2003-10-07
The whole album is great, but the remix by Dharma Dogz is worth the price. A masterpiece. Anyone into chill, relaxer or cool world music MUST pick this one up!

Album Description
It is evident in listening to In A Space Outta Sound that Nightmares on Wax has travelled far. A contemporary and varied album of many textures, tempos and tones, it is embedded with harmonic inflections from cultures far beyond these shores. Whilst this is an album deconstructing George's musical make up, and in doing so reflecting his rich musical heritage, by inviting you down a personal retrospective journey, In A Space
also unwittingly reflects the urban multi-cultural landscape we live in today.

Outta Ideas.......2007-04-02
To many musical artists, the idea of "impressive ambience" or "notable chill" is a contradiction in terms. If the music is meant to be little more than the decor for dreams, if it is designed as a batten for the back wall, then what's the point in giving it indelibility? Thankfully, many artists (Kruder and Dorfmeister, Ulrich Schnauss, et. al.) are capable of creating atmospheres that are both evocative and unobtrusive. It's a delicate kind of chemistry, but it can be done.
Nightmares on Wax aims for ambient funk and hits the target, but almost too well. The music on "In A Space Outta Sound" is so laid-back, it limbos right under the rader. It would provide the steady and subliminal pulse for any number of quiet nights or get-togethers, but it's unlikely anyone would take notice and ask the host, "What's this you've got playing?"
Okay, maybe some of their numbers would pique interest. I'm thinking of the quirky conga coolness of "Deepdown," or the ghostly lounge sensibilities of "Passion," or the classic rock shadows interlaced throughout "You Wish." There are, really, no bad songs on this album; they all play soft shoe with equally soft music, and they know the moves by heart. But it's a dance you'll forget as soon as the stereo has been turned off, and it's even likely you'll forget that you forgot.
Ambience is good, and chill is great, but truly relaxing music stays in the air, lingers in the heart, and saturates the soul long after the notes have ceased to sound. Give me barbs, give me hooks, give me risks; the rest may be good, but it's also nothing else at all.
Nice... .......2006-06-12
One of my favourite albums in my library is "Smoker's Delight". Just having my first listen to In a Space... and I'm definitely having fun listening to this. As button mentioned, it is a good compliment to the other NOW albums. I've the idea that this one's gonna get a good deal of playtime on my iPod...
Chillin..........2006-05-12
This latest effort from Nightmares On Wax continues in the spirit of his previous work, smoked out mellow downtempo with elements of funk, soul/r&b, jazz, underground hip-hop and more. Like other reviewers have mentioned In A Space Outta Sound is a little weaker and less inventive than some of the earlier albums, but it is still a decent chill-out disc. It must be said though that the production on some of the tracks is a little sub-par IMO (at least for an established artist like NOW) and some of the sample choices are a bit obvious and overused. However, there are some quality tracks on here and the album as a whole works rather well so if you're just looking for some mellow tunes to chill out to then this cd might just be for you, but if you don't own any of the earlier albums you should probably pick up one of those instead.
VICTORIA MOREHEAD's igloomag.com REVIEW :: .......2006-03-29
VICTORIA MOREHEAD's igloomag.com REVIEW ::
(03.28.06) Nightmares on Wax put out their first album with Warp Records, Dextrous, in the late 80s, a combined effort of George Evelyn and Kevin Harper. Soon after, Harper left to pursue other routes, and Evelyn took a break, coming back with Smoker's Delight in 1995. Since then, Evelyn has continued to mix up and put out a consistent brand of downtempo music, releasing many additional albums including the most recent, In a Space Outta Sound.
In a Space... isn't new territory for Evelyn. It's full of soul, groove, funk, jazz, reggae and sweet vocals. But that could be the issue holding NOW back from ever growing beyond the category of "music that's good to chill to."
Taking the flavors of other music and amalgamating them into a funktronic sound has become de rigueur of downtempo electronic music. It's the background music in trendy clothing stores and the soundtrack in commercials for German cars. Evelyn's talent is obvious, but if he would just break out of that sterile, perfectly synchronized world of downtempo layers, he might surprise himself. Perhaps it's just a matter of keeping it a little rough around the edges. Maybe if Evelyn let in a little more of the blues raunch and the soul of-well, soul-he could take it to the next level.
This is not to say that In a Space... doesn't have it's respected place. It's just a place that seems to be getting overcrowded with other musicians doing exactly the same thing. Why have five albums from the same artist if they all sound exactly alike? We're looking for evolution, experimentation-something surprising. Maybe NOW's next album will let that funk stay funky, rip the edges and keep 'em raw, and show us some soul that's not so shiny and new.
Still the man.......2006-03-21
a perfect compliment to NOW's fantastic albums of the past, "smokers delight" and "carboot soul" in particular. not really messing with the formula of previous work, but still sounds fresh, positive and grows with each listen.

Although double albums are again de rigueur, the mercurial Shocked pushes the envelope on her first release in four years. Fully free from major-label duties, Shocked picks up where the quasi-gospel vibe of the limited-edition Good News left off (even reprising a few tracks) and delivers the most expressive singing of her career. She fuses deep Southern funk, Jamaican dub, ambient country-folk, and socially and sexually conscious soul (à la What's Going On) with poignantly confessional, faith-based lyrics. "The more I forgive, the more I forget/Let it go, let it go," she consoles herself. The sprawling instrumental companion disc, Dub Natural, has moments of artistic surprise (especially the supernova blues rock of "Draughts of Dublin"), though it rarely finds the purpose and spiritual poise of this set's main attraction--Shocked's ardent singing and gleaming, inspired songwriting. --Roy Kasten
Customer Reviews:
Long and dull.......2007-01-28
This album is bad. Which is a shame because Michelle Shocked has always been an automatic purchase for me. No more.
I don't know if it happened in the mixing, the recording, or with the instrument choices, but whatever it is, it ain't good. The music is the audio equivalent to pouring porridge through a sieve.
And since she's found religion, her lyrics have gone from razor sharp attitude and storytelling to just bludgeoning us with a club that is both patronizing and wearisome. She's always written about stuff that is important to her, but she did it in a voice that captured my attention. Now it just turns me off.
It is hard to believe this is the same artist that wrote "Anchorage", "Prodigal Daughter", "Memories of East Texas", and "The Cement Lament".
Disappointment.......2003-08-02
I really liked her album "Short Sharp Shocked" and still do, but this one was a waste of money. I listened to it twice and probably will never again. Her religious and "preachy" fanatical overtones are annoying. There is not much more to say.
A Little Sophomoric, But Very Solid Stuff.......2003-05-19
Truthfully, this isn't really my type of music, but all things considered, it's really good. The only reason I heard this CD is because I had a chance to meet Michelle Shocked and she personally handed me this CD, which she told me she packaged and shrink-wrapped by herself. I've since seen her perform at one of the local clubs in Los Angeles, and I remember seeing her on the Dr. Phil show protesting the military action against Iraq.
I have the benefit of knowing this artist and what she stands for and believes in, so that's why I can appreciate her music. I know the deeper, spiritual, social, and political meaning behind the lyrics in her songs. However, if you're someone who just happens upon the CD at Blockbuster Music and listens to it simply for its musical value, you might not like it. In my personal opinion, this is a good CD to play in your car on an extended trip so you can listen to the whole thing all at once. There's really no one track on this album that stands out above the others. I also have the companion CD called Dub Natural, which are the same songs as Deep Natural, except without the lyrics. I think both of these CDs come together in one package. That also is a nice CD to listen to, because you really get a feel for Michelle's ability as a musician.
Shocked gets religion.......2003-02-27
I have a very short personal list of musicians whose CDs I always buy. She was ABOUT to fall off that list until she came out with Deep/Dub Natural.
In my opinion, about Shocked's only flaw is a tendency to preach and as she matured, she made that mistake a few times.
Not in this album! Like her early music, the lyrics are poignant yet nuanced. But, she has broken out of the folk mode without giving it up completely.
Clearly she has had some encounter with God and she uses that as lyrical focus. But don't think this is some boring Christian album. She NEVER falls into cliche even when she re-interprets a song like Amazing Grace. That song, for instance, breaks your heart and renews at the same time.
Great stuff. And don't neglect Dub Natural. I like it maybe even better than Deep Natural. I know that Shocked wasn't the first to do a re-mix second disk, but not many have done it better. It really works -- "Dub" has the feel of "Deep" but is not a needless duplication. I play Dub Natural more than "Deep".
I also hope this CD will open up her audience beyond the folk singer-songwriter crowd. She deserves it. Unfortunately, I doubt this release will get a lot of promotion. Good reason to buy it, though - play if for friends and they will think you have the good taste to not follow the masses.
who is Michelle Shocked? She's incredible!.......2003-02-26
When my local paper ran a review of Deep Natural, I had never heard of Michelle Shocked before. It was an incredibly glowing review, though. So, I decided to splurge and take a chance and pick up the cd. I popped it in my cd player and sat down. The album opens with Shocked belting out a short acapella song titled "Joy". This song would later be used as part of "Can't Take My Joy". My jaw dropped. "Joy" was powerful and just gave me a little chill. It just felt special, that the album as a whole was going to be something very special. It is.
Even though Michelle Shocked can use her voice as a powerful instrument on songs like "Good News" and "What Can I Say?", she still effectively sings "Psalm" when she goes softer. The range that Shocked can use her voice as an instrument is incredible....as is her gifts as a musician and songwriter. I was completely blown away by Michelle Shocked and she is now one of the few that I will recommend without any reservation.

A musical consortium in the style of roots reggae and 70's Jamaican sound. It's captivating, soulful, passionate and heavy dub. The members also play in the band John Brown's Body (Shanachie Records). Standard jewel case. 2001 release.
Customer Reviews:
A FIRMLY PLANTED GANJA PLANT.......2004-01-16
Of all the non-jamaican reggae artists I've heard, 10ft. may very well be the most impressive. The tracks have an old-school feel to them while still sounding fresh and new. There's a few members of John Brown's Body involved in this project but I think that the Plant sounds even more authentic. If you like roots, then please pick this up!
A MUST HAVE !!!!!.......2001-10-16
If you're a fan of John Brown's Body, you simply must find a place for this CD in your collection. A collaboration between Craig Welsh and various musicians including members of JBB, these tracks will round out your reggae collection with an alternative but rootsy feel and sound. Great lyrics by Welsh and The Plant. The riffs are really phat in places. The keyboarding is simply AWESOME - traditional but fresh. In fact, for me, the keyboarding, combined with some serious, infectious and psychodelic dub, provides some of the most memorable highlights. And although I'm not sure if it's my system or not, but my recording features some very welcome feedback on the phatter base line.
Key Tracks: "Born Free" (not sure who's on vocals but his voice sounds like Floyd Lloyd - a Jamaican ska favorite), "Long Time Ago" (unsure of lead vocals, fantastic background vocals almost sounding like the Gladiators or Israel Vibration), "Time I Know" (a rootsy phsychodelic ode to Jah with Kevin Kinsella on lead vocals), "Soul Love" (rootsy track with an R&B feel and some nice harp) "Pure Sugar" (very JBB-like sound featuring Kevin Kinsella and Elliot Martin on vocals). "Jah Will Go On", "Two Bulls" and "Hillside Airstrip" provide some trippy dub. Turn the lights out, the volume up and the bass all the way to the right - THIS IS PHAT!
If you ever get a chance to see John Brown's Body live - do it. I've seen them twice at The Middle East in Cambridge, MA and thoroughly enjoyed myself. One of the few bands that have mastered the fine art of live dub without producing waves of electronic dribble. There is word of a forthcoming album, but unfortunately I also here their label, Shanachie, recently dropped them. No worries, another will surely pick them up soon. Enjoy.
The best American roots/dub you've ever heard............2001-03-15
This album knocked me down---Spawning from members of the incredible Northeast rootical band John Brown's Body (JBB), this studio dub can be compared to the greatest. From top to bottom I was continually blown away--if you didn't know any better you'd think it was layed down at Tubby's in '79. Even the beautiful cover artwork (as well as the theme) represents JA. Take special note of track 2--as the title implies it's PURE SUGAR! This tune utilizes the vocals of JBB members Kevin and Elliot, and shows the world how talented they truly are. TIME I KNOW, WALKEY WALK TALL, and the psychedelic TWO BULLS stand out as phenomenal, but there is not one weak track--I have already purchased 2 of these discs!!!--WORLDWIDE RECOGNITION IS DUE.--Big up to Craig Welsch for his IMMENSE skills, to JBB and associated members, and to Ithaca/Boston for keepin' it real. BUY THIS ALBUM!!! JAH GUIDANCE AND BLESSINGS!!! ONE LOVE!!

Product Description
On their first full album release, DESERT DWELLERS meld elements of downtempo and psy-chill with sinewy basslines, otherworldly guitar and an exotic mix of organic instruments into an Indo-ambient mystical fusion. This recording, along with the forthcoming DOWNTEMPLE DUB: FLAMES, was originally conceived as the soundtrack to the DVD Series DUNCAN WONG YOGIC ARTS. That project allowed DESERT DWELLERS to push the bounds of Yoga music into a new realm of musical fusion called Yoga Dub: electronic devotional music blending the boundaries of rhythmic ambience while incorporating such traditional instruments as subahar, tabla, udu, erhu, cello and voice. The emphasis is always on the space between the music, allowing for a non-intrusive soundscape to support rather than distract from the listeners activity. Produced by CRAIG KOHLAND, founder of the SHAMAN'S DREAM ENSEMBLE, DOWNTEMPLE DUB: WAVES pulses with lush rhythms and serene harmonies, guiding a sonic odyssey into the soul of the global heartbeat.

Indianesque (Sweetly Spiritually Harmonizing) and Kicking-at-times Electronica Plus Other.......2007-04-12
Taste, younger adult males making sacred peace, very hit at the right times interesting stalls, etc electronica for yoga specifically- originally, but totally appropriate to spiritual living, parties, etc. It is gracefully almost alt rock and roll-like at stop to restart moments, with nontraditonal instrumentation. I believe they may have played at Burning Man celebrations. Very likable, although I was dissatisfied until the second play. Then I started savoring it for some reason. It is a regular favorite after a couple weeks. There are no skip-overs. (Not as impressed yet with Flames which is the trio's remix of the formerly duo's earlier work.) I would love to see this progress to a more personal and other cultures-inclusive wholeness; we need Native America's (incl South's) greater depths shared I believe also with such modern beauty and good-natured intelligence, and not oversampled and simplified traditionally either. This one's focus is something I enjoy and the Indian sounds, names, and art need to get better personally and differently in progress also- I have heard these sounds before but they've done it in a great new and exciting way on the "frontier". There is a all-drumming song that is spectacular and contributes to the non-banal-ing of the complexity tremendously. I have mixed emotions about it being a yoga cd-- it reminds me of exercise videos and following general and perhaps overgeneralizations I don't want to be a part of-- there is a sort of common excellence I think due to that that I don't appreciate, but I have enjoyed it especially.

Album Description
As most rock & roll bands started in someone's garage or basement or living room, Phase Selector Sound are two (ex?) punk rockers working out of their ad hoc home studios (heavily influenced by Radio Shack equipment). They create a powerful roots dub that is hypnotic, mesmerizing and trance-inducing. Very much in keeping with ROIR's long history of releasing the absolute best in dub by such artists as Lee Perry, Niney The Observer, Mikey Dread, Mad Professor, Black Uhuru, Badawi, Bill Laswell, Dub Syndicate, Ras Michael, Scientist, Yabby You, Oku Onuora --- and the list goes on! Produced arranged and mixed by Phase Selector Sound.

The Sound Bites Just as Good.......2007-03-10
Pleasant background cocktail party music with reggae/dub beats, I purchased it liking the sound bites, but there is nothing more to the album than the soundbites. Never does it get dense or goes anyplace surprising. Cover is better than music. Groups like St. Germain, or the various Parisian club mix albums, like Paris Under a Groove or Hotel Costas series are far better, and I wouldn't really recommend those either, unless you want "chill" coctail party music. Still I don't regret purchase becasue sometimes I just want a groove and to otherwise basically ignore kind of hip "muzak" while I do something else than listen, which is what I would consider this good for. I love that Summer in Paris, Hotel Costas, thing, but much prefer Orb to any of this to fill a similar need in my music. Actually, Orb can be brilliant at times. A couple maybe three Orb albums are superb. I took best tracks from three of them and made one great burned CD. Truth is for "chill" purpose, not that that expression conveys very much to me,I've never heard anything in 30 years that comes close to Discrete Music by Eno or Evening Star by Fripp and Eno. Compared to greats like those ... Well for a "chill" relaxing, after work space, they've never been touched to my knowledge. Sorry if lumping them in with this offends anybody. "Chill" never really made all that much sense to me as a label for music anyway. Sorry if this isnt' what you're looking for.
Hats off to dub-masters Joshua Elrod and Craig Allen!.......2005-09-29
I can only agree with previous reviewers, this is the best dub album I've ever heard, all categories... The coolest thing is that it bridges roots dub with modern dub like no other. The great Hi-fidelity dub series, for example, does on occasions reach the level of Phase Selector Sound. At the same time this album would easily match any dub release blood&fire could possibly throw at you! These guys takes dub to the next level. The production has a fantastic old-school feel to it, with a setup that is simple yet profound. This is truly beautiful music and the album doesn't contain one single tedious moment, every track stands out against the others. Phase Selector Sound kicks off at the highest possible level and stay there throughout the entire album. There's no end to the superlatives this album merits.
Worthy companion of the Hi-Fidelity Dub Sessions.......2005-07-20
This is, without a doubt, the best original dub offering I've purchased - online or off - bar none.
In the tradition of the kings of dub (like Augustus Pablo, Mad Scientist, Lee Perry, or the Professor), this album retains very strong ties to its roots (you'll hear snatches of old Upsetter tracks, along with some other nods to those old school influential artists).
At the same time, the album has a very modern feel to it, along the lines of the excellent Hi-Fidelity Dub releases (1-4). There's no question that this album is strictly roots, but the tracks all feel like they have had updating for the downbeat era.
The most shocking thing to me is that this album was released 6 years ago, and I've only discovered it in 2005! Do yourself a favour and purchase it straight away...before it goes out of print (come on...how many other products can you find that have ALL customer reviews giving it 5 out of 5 stars? ;).
The Best Dub Yet........2003-04-01
I've heard a lot of dub, and I own a lot of dub, but I've got to say that this is the best dub yet, I mean the entire CD. Personally this CD is #1 in my book so far. It's worth buying at almost any price. So if you like dub this is the one for you. I can't wait to see what he put out next.
peacemaker.......2001-11-14
Ideal proportion of "ridim", bass and sounds of mind and heart.

Album Description
Two CD collection featuring the best of Tackhead's recordings for Adrian Sherwood's On-U-Sound label. Tackhead were originally backing musicians for some of the original Sugarhill Gang recordings as well as other ground-breaking Rap recordings of the '70s and '80s. By the mid-'80s, they relocated to the UK and hooked up with Sherwood and On-U-Sound and continued to break musical ground in Dub and experimental Reggae. 32 tracks. EMI.

Tack...head.......2007-03-23
Tackhead were a formidable group but all their members were able to do better things separately. The playing is great as usual but somehow it is too sterile and cerebral. They were doing a mix of hip hop hard rock and electronica before anyone but there was something too cold in their rhetoric to actually be engaging. Still, from a purely critical point of view, very good and essential.
slash and burn funk.......2006-12-02
"That was an intense gig, let me tell you -- this huge aural assault, with Doug Wimbish playing the bass like a lead instrument; using bass lines that followed lead patterns over Keith "Sugarhill" Le Blanc's deconstructed snares. Overlaying this, Adrian Sherwood plays his cut up tape loops of monks chanting -- all this noise, with me and Jah Wobble playing what we usually do over this exploding surface! Intense......." (Keith PIL Levene in conversation with Greg Whitfield, remembering his and Jah Wobble's contributions to Tackhead. 2004.)
Not everyone takes to Tackhead and their related acts, it's true-- some find their music to be overly mired in late 80's muso /electro fusion. Some find their industrial noise collision paranoia funk to be contrived at times. Others can't bear Gary Clail's voice, and wonder at its appeal.
But one thing is for sure -- when Doug Wimbish, Skip McDonald and K Le Blanc get it right, they REALLY get it right and burn with a visceral -- yet so cerebral -- intensity. Hard to beat.
Last year saw the release of ONU Sound Crash, compiling AMS's reggae and dub career into a seamless collage. It had its moments for sure, but it was largely a sampler for the uninitiated and curious.
This Tackhead collage is quite a different proposition: it takes the original 80's work, mercilessly cutting off any loose fat and dated electro aspects, rendering the monolithic sonics lean -- raw funk power and cathartic intellect focussed through a prism of sheer noise.
The album opens with Oppenheimer's quote from Hindu Scripture -- By July 1945, USA was ready to test its A bomb. Recalling his contemplation on the awe of the event, Oppenheimer said: "A few people laughed, a few people cried, most people were silent. There floated through my mind a line from Hindu Scripture, the "Bhagavad-Gita" -- Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince that he should do his duty and to impress him takes on his multi armed form and says: 'I am become death: the destroyer of worlds.' I suppose we all thought that, one way or another."
Oppenheimer went to Harvard where a classmate says he "intellectually looted the place." The same could be said of Tackhead and their approach to sound. The album takes in a mangled tape of Martin Luther King, quoting and meditating on lines from HG Wells, cut and spliced with the whoosh and shatter of a car crash. Later, Le Blanc's austerely disciplined snares become entwined with the Psalms and supplications of Trappist monks. In the track "Heaven On Earth", near death experience survivors recount their euphoria -- ( "I heard a loud buzzing noise -- I felt myself moving backwards, through a long dark tunnel --") before having the life energy squeezed out of their optimism by a preacher's sermon, redolent of Schopenhauer at his most reductive and claustrophobic. The chant is steadily cut down and reduced until it resembles a Zulu chant.
This is Manichean funk at its most extreme: The Manichean sect (begun in Persia, circa 200 AD) apparently thought matter itself was evil, and that consciousness was a kind of punishment, the only solution being the liberation of the spirit from its earthly/bodily cage.
At their heights, this is what Tackhead seem to be doing with their music -- Liberating the body/spirit duality from its constrictions.
Tackhead music is colossal funk abiogenesis-- heuristic noise exploration at its extreme limits.
Highly recommended austerity and funk asceticism, from start to finish.
Unmissable. Hard to beat. Towers of power from Tackhead.

Product Description
Bass Chalice, is 10 Ft. Ganja Plants third release on ROIR. Their first, entitled Hillside Airstrip, and second, Midnight Landing, were both uniformly hailed by the music press (see next page). This time around, things are a bit different. First off, 10 Ft. Ganja Plant will be touring! Before this, the only chance anyone had to see them live was at an impromptu show, usually in the Boston area. There have only been a handful of these gigs and their frenzied, sweaty nature has left audiences clamoring for more. In early 2006, they will get it10 Ft. Ganja Plants first ever tour! Beyond this, Bass Chalice sees 10 Ft. stripping away a bit of the mystery surrounding the bands lineup and actually letting us disclose a very special guest appearance by the legendary 70s Jamaican vocal reggae group The Meditations! Their first two albums, Message from the Meditations and Wake Up are downright, stone-cold reggae classics that must be heard. On Bass Chalice they grace To Each with a spellbinding vocal performance! The Meditations are a fitting addition to the album because Bass Chalice, at its heart, is inspired by the recording processes of the great Jamaican studio bands of the 70's (and their American counterparts at Motown and Stax) where a song was typically written, learned, and recorded live in a single session, with no regrets, and no apologies. Add to this ethos some dubwise studio mastery and experimentation and you begin to get the picture. This is good news for a genre that seems to be gathering steam in recent months. Apart from big releases on ROIR by Dub Trio, Bush Chemists & Dr. Israel, other bands have been making their mark on stages around the country: Matisyahu, Future Pigeon, Dub Nomads, Dub Gabriel, Dub As A Weapon, Jah Division, and (on a different level) Damian Junior Gong Marley. Dub & roots reggae is more popular than ever and the 10 Ft. Ganja Plant army is poised to make a big, smoky impression.

Another Solid Album.......2006-04-07
Bass Chalice is yet another really solid album from a group that I think deserves more attention. If you like their first two albums then you definitely need to pick this one up. Bass Chalice, for the most part, holds true to form to their 70's roots style with modern touches that make this group so great to listen to. That being said, I feel that this album is more modern sounding than the other two. They have added some horns into the mix (ie. "Suits and Ski Masks") that add a jazzier feel as well as losing a bit of that really rootsy studio sound that they have captured so well in the past. The first track "Blood Money" has stood out as the best track for me and creates an almost impossible standard for the rest of the disk to live up to. I agree with the last review that not every track is strong although still a must-have if you are a fan. I can't wait until they go on tour.
Pretty Irie.......2006-02-28
Bass Chalice is, in my opinon, 10ft ganja plants best album I was disappointed in Midnight landing, very pleased with hillside airstrip, but bas chalice has to top them with out a doubt. Like its title bass chalice as some very original and enjoyable bass lines. "blood money" is a great song with a very cool bass line and doesnt go on for to long the same goes for "bass chalice" which has an uplifteing beat and finishes the cd perfecttly. the reason it doesnt get a 5 is because not every song is all that great. Overall If you are a roots fan and treasure well written bass lines bass chalice should be in your roots reggae collection

Minimal dub techno at it's finest.......2007-07-04
Ominous, bass heavy, emotional, minimalist, sensual, uplifting, depressing; this album is all of these. If you are a fan of dub reggae and/or minimal techno pick this gem up.
Possibly not Rhythm & Sounds most accessible album, but still Essential............2006-11-22
German Duo "Moritz Von Oswald" and "Mark Ernestus" were already applauded for their work as `Basic Channel', cutting tracks that were extremely accomplished exercises, in the minimally stripped-down techno, that they came to be known for. Their next Project "Rhythm & Sound" takes the cerebral, hypnotic and almost gloomy sound of Basic Channel, and imbues it with the clinical and reverberating bass of Dub. Thus lending the sound a more murky and ominous sound. Tracks are stretched out into long passages of repetitive combination of shuffling beats and spacious bass, that are marked by the subtle changes in tempo, and by ulitilzing their own take on the sound, they offer up modern interpretation of experimental dub, that has been filtered through their own vision and reconstructed into something more akin to a distinct hybrid of styles, that is in some parts referencing dub greats such as: King Tubby, Augustus Pablo, Lee `Scratch' Perry, Alpha & Omega, Keith Hudson. And offering a distinct nod to minimal techno's/electronica's well known names: Sandoz, Richie Hawtin, Pole, Monolake, Jan Jelinek.
What transpires is a wholly instrumental disk, that is akin to listening to an instrumental dub album. Although other Rhythm & Sound releases have brilliantly integrated vocals in their other releases. A listeners enjoyment of this album will be largely based on whether a record with virtually nothing in the way of vocals appeals or not?? Suffice to say that the lack of vocals is magnificently offset by dense and highly precise sounding percussion, that wraps around the trippy bass, exceptionally well. A complex, convoluted rhythm arrangement of thick washes of sound, that works so well by using repetition in the best way possible. What initially seems as to be overly-long tracks, with not much in the way of variation, soon....over repeated listens.....open up and reveal themselves to be tightly focused and relatively spacious sounds, that efficiently use space, silences, atmospheres and sub lows, In a remarkable way. And what is astonishing is the way, in which...what your mind might have dismissed initially as uneventful, soon begins to fully comprehend the intricacies of what being created here.
Ultimately this isn't an album, for everyone....it's a little too specialist and obscure to appeal to a wide audience, but then anyone reading these reviews, will have a fairly good idea of what to expect here anyways. Fans of the Dubby-techno of "Maurizio", or the sprawling subtle variations of "Oval", or even the more experimental end of Dub: "African Head Charage" / "Dub Syndicate". Will find much to enjoy here....admittedly the other releases that feature vocalists are a noticeably more accessible than this, but for sheer technical brilliance and skillfull manipulation of sound, this is amongst Techno-Dub / Minimal-Dub's finest albums, and a highly recommend release.

Eclecticism reigns supreme in the world of illbient. Raz Mesinai, Sub Dub's percussionist in residence, has put together a super-swingin' album. Featuring the sultry lyrical stylings of Honeychild, the album Bedouin Sound Clash wondrously whisks you away to expansive deserts of shifting sands to find yourself in one of the most relaxing and tantalizing musical oases you have ever happened across.
The use of Middle Eastern percussion instruments and samples, as well as Middle Eastern percussion patterns, serves Mesinai all the better when it comes to enthralling his audience. He also mixes in some reggae dubs, as on track three, "Pressurizor," beautifully complementing his percussion tracks. And one really has to credit him for bringing in a vocalist as talented as Honeychild. When listening to the album, one can not help but feel that the two musicians were made for one another. --Ryan Kuykendall
Album Description
A highly experimental dub album that combines heavy reggae-influenced rhythms with Middle Eastern percussion, and the occasional striking female vocal (Honeychild). From Raz Mesinai, master dubber and percussionist, and one-half of Sub Dub. Bedouin Sound Clash was conceived and recorded in Raz's basement studio with a four track cassette recorder and a multivox echo chamber. Although the record utilizes a new style of dub, it preserves an organic feel with reggae rhythms, analog sounds, and Egyptian and Bedouin percussion.
Customer Reviews:
Honeychild lifts this album up...........2006-12-02
There has been quite a buzz surrounding the re-release of this very worthy ten year old album.
Most of the music on the album features very reasonable but unremarkable UK sounding dubwise tracks -- but -- what makes this an indispensible, essential purchase is the enigmatic vocals on four of the tracks by the under recorded, under rated Honeychild.
She has a beautiful voice which, though not a conventional female roots voice, fits the mystery of this music -- perfectly. Listen to the cloudy, smoky paranoia of "Suspicion" with the drizzle of a rain storm and muted thunder rolls underlying the entire rhythm structure.
Listen to the backward tape loops of her voice on the disorienting "Lack Of Dub To The Brain" over a dense backdrop of muted, hushed spoken samples, flutes and cries -- and it's clear that this is an original contribution to the reggae music canon.
On the track "Snake Charmer" Honeychild's vocal is not as unique or impressive, sounding more like a conventional lover's rock chanteuse. Think UK lovers styles meets Ari Up's "Some Love". It is reasonable -- but ordinary in comparasion with her other intriguing and captivating vocals on this album.
Honeychild -- unquestionably --deserves her own album.
These four Honeychild tracks are, overwhelmingly, reminiscent of Rhythm and Sound music -- They feature that same "roll off" sub low bass rumble and hiss. In this case though, there is a psychedelic loneliness and melancholy in the vocals. This is eerie dubwise at its best.
Grab this while it lasts for the Honeychild tracks -- Don't wait for it to delete and then be re-issued ten years from now.
middle eastern sounds and classic dub fusion.......2001-07-19
How can you not like a fusion of middle eastern drum sounds, hypnotic singing (Honey Child) and classic jamaican dub?
My coworkers and i have ripped this and listen to it almost daily. When I first heard it, i thought maybe it was a Scientist or King Tubby record. But then i noticed how dense the beats were. The production sounded more modern, the bass heavy, the drumming ethereal in the mix. Sampled vocals come and go in the mix, lending this dub a hypnotic middle-eastern flavor that is really unique.
i like, very much. If you dig dub, you'll dig this.
Monotonous: no bedouin, no class.......2001-05-16
There is no lack of talent on Badawi's label, there is just a lack of inspiration. The monotonous sounds may provoke instances of bewildered gasps for air from the listener. When is it going to happen? Maybe that is Badawi's motivation? It left this reviewer wondering why he ever bothered listening to the entire album. Not recommended!
